Some Kansas City hotspots ban photography over growing disruptions

20 Nov

A number of Kansas City metro hotspots are putting up “No Trespassing” signs that specifically state ‘No Photographers,’ according to local FOX affiliate WDAF. The restrictions were prompted by ‘a few bad apples’ who would set up props for photoshoots in lobbies, doorways, and places that block traffic, the report states.

Both commercial and Instagram photography is reportedly disrupting certain iconic regions and businesses in Kansas City. Brett Judson, owner of local business Coven KC, explained to WDAF, ‘Besides setting up their fake house in our lobby, in our front door, they will block all the traffic under the 12th Street bridge to get that, like, beautiful family photo or a wedding photo.’

Some local photographers are speaking up about the issue, stating a minority of individuals are giving the entire profession a bad name. One such photographer is Marsha Baylor, who will join colleagues in cleaning up litter in some of Kansas City’s hotspots to help make the point.

‘They’re not the norm,’ Baylor told the local news station. ‘We are the norm. We are the people that step up and say, “This is not OK. This is not how the majority of us run our businesses.'”

Kansas City currently requires photographers to get a permit when shooting in parks if the sessions will ‘impact others and/or the environment,’ which includes using ‘lots of props/equipment,’ according to city parks’ website. A city spokesperson speaking to WDAF pointed out that there are no laws restricting photographers from shooting while on public property, but that doing so on private property with posted signs can be a trespassing issue.

In addition, Missouri Department of Conservation spokesman Bill Graham stated that the agency is working on a new policy that will impact commercial photography and videography in all of the region’s conservation areas.

Not in Kansas: Black House Lands in Front of Oz Museum

Landed Installation Ian Strange 1

The childhood home of artist Ian Strange has literally landed right in front of the Art Gallery of South Australia as if it were picked up by a tornado and plunked there, Wizard of Oz style. The striking matte black structure is a detailed recreation of the 1920s suburban Australian home Strange grew up in, down to the scrolled ornamentation on the porch and a spigot clinging to one exterior wall.

Landed Installation Ian Strange 2

Installed for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, the installation makes an intentional reference to Dorothy’s Kansas home and the jarring visual of it crashing in a place where it doesn’t belong.

Landed Installation Ian Strange 3

This visual is a nod to both the continued intrusion of Western pop culture into Australia, and the disconnected nature of suburbia, a recurring theme in Strange’s work.

Strange previously explored the suburban house as a cultural icon in his series SUBURBAN, which involved drastically altering homes that were set for demolition and then burning the down, filming the entire process.

Travis Young Photography Presents : Garden City, Kansas

03 Aug

This is my representation of Garden City. It is personal, and holds photos that hit home to me and my life. Is it a reflection of all Garden? Of course not. Gettin’ some slack from someone about this so I thought I’d throw this little bit out there before any one else over reacts to the photos that I took during my short visit of Garden. —— This is my hometown of Garden City, KS. I went back home for the weekend and during my stay I went to the trailer park I grew up in and the areas that surrounded it, then ventured around and photographed things I felt relevant to my Garden City “experience.” I’m not out to make Garden City look “ghetto” or “hood,” because it really isnt, It can get dirty at times though and I just want to show the world things that people tend to overlook or ignore or maybe not even see. People have it hard and it’s amazing what conditions people live in. It really sucked when I found a home, the size of a small shack, using an actual padlock as their door lock. Anyway, this is my hometown. This is the place that I love. Garden City, Kansas. Proud.
