Adobe joins Nikon in withdrawing from this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas due to COVID-19

10 Mar

Adobe has announced it’s withdrawing from this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas due to concerns surrounding COVID-19 (the coronavirus). In the brief statement, embedded below, Adobe says it is disappointed it has to make this decision but says ‘the health and safety of our employees, customers and partners are always our priority.’

This announcement comes just days after both AJA and Nikon confirmed the companies wouldn’t be attending NAB 2020. With respect to this year’s NAB Show, the organizers have a webpage dedicated to information about COVID-19 and how the show will be different this year. NAB is still scheduled to take place April 18-22. We have contacted the organizers of the NAB Show for comment regarding the departure of Adobe, AJA and Nikon. We will update this article accordingly if we receive a response.

Adobe Withdraws from NAB Show 2020

Each year, we look forward to seeing our video community at NAB to talk about the latest trends and our product innovations. Over the past few weeks, we have been closely monitoring and evaluating the situation around COVID-19 and have made the difficult but important decision to cancel our presence at the show this year.

While we are disappointed, the health and safety of our employees, customers and partners are always our priority. We look forward to engaging with our NAB community through a digital experience in the near future.

Adobe and Nikon withdrawing from the NAB Show follow on the heels of the annual CP+2020 show in Japan being canceled at the end of February. The impact of COVID-19 has been felt outside of the realm of tradeshows as well, with the virus affecting the supply chains for camera manufacturers. Nikon has just announced that the release of the Nikon D6 flagship DSLR camera has been delayed from this month until May. Canon has proactively suspended production at three of its plants in Japan.

The COVID-19 coronavirus has already had a large impact on industries around the world, including the photo industry, and companies are working hard to mitigate the risk for their employees. As governments and health agencies around the world work to better understand and contain COVID-19, it is difficult to predict the extent of the impact that the virus will have on the photo industry, but it’s safe to expect today’s announcement from Adobe is not the last of its kind we will hear in the coming weeks and months. Huawei joins the “hole-punch” game with the Nova 4

17 Dec

Huawei has announced the latest model in its range of smartphones, the Nova 4. It’s the brand’s first device with a “hole-punch” front camera, that is mostly hidden behind the display and does away with the display “notch” found on many other high-end phones.

The Nova 4 isn’t the first phone with a “hole-punch” camera – that honor goes to the Samsung A8s – but it looks like its 25Mp front camera is peeking through a smaller-diameter hole than the Samsung’s, minimizing the “display disruption”.

Huawei sub-brand Honor has also already pre-announced its VIew 20 phone which seems to have a lot in common with the Nova 4. For starters, there’s the same “hole-punch” design and the two devices also share the same 48MP primary cameras on the rear.

The Nova 4 comes with a triple-cam setup, however, including a 2MP depth-sensor, while the main camera setup of the View 20 is still unknown. In terms of chipset the phones are going down different paths, though. The Nova 4 is powered by last year’s Kirin 970 processor; the View 20 phone will use the newer Kirin 980.

The Nova 4 display measures 6.4 inches and comes with a 2310 x 1080 resolution. 8GB of RAM are plenty and 128 of built-in storage offer space for a good number of images and video.

For now the Nova 4 has only been released in China where it will cost approximately $ 490 (3,399 yuan) but, like previous Nova models the phone will likely make it to other regions soon. If you don’t want to spend quite as much, there is also a cheaper variant ($ 450) that replaces the 48MP primary shooter with a more modest 20MP unit.

Despite the launch of four RF and two EF-mount lenses, Canon is out to show that it’s still committed to the EF-M system. Today the company announced the EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM, which will cost $ 479.99 when it is available later this month, and offers an equivalent focal length of just over 50mm when attached to an M-series mirrorless body.

Press Release:

CANON INTRODUCES NEW LENS FEATURING THE LARGEST AND FASTEST APERTURE IN THE EF-M LENS FAMILY

New EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM Expands Canon’s Robust Lineup of EF-M Lenses

Aimed at Entry and Enthusiast-Level Photographers

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 5, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced a new EF-M wide angle fixed-focal-length lens, the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM. The EF-M lens is both compact and lightweight, serving as an ideal addition for any photographer shooting with an EOS-M series camera. general travel photography.

“As Canon continues to expand the company’s EF-M lineup, it is very important that users are provided the tools they desire for a variety of shooting situations,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The new EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens delivers great image quality in a compact and lightweight form factor, allowing photographers to capture the images they envision when they pick up their camera.”

The EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens is the second EF-M lens to feature a large-aperture, delivering stunning bokeh with a soft blurred background that helps photographers isolate their subjects. In addition, the 32mm focal length converts to approximately 51m in 35mm format, providing an angle-of-view close to the field-of-view of the human eye.

Additional noteworthy features of the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens include:

  • 14 elements in eight groups, including a glass molded aspherical lens
  • Super Spectra Coating technology and optimized lens element placement helps minimize ghosting and flaring
  • Lead gear-type STM stepping motor to help provide smooth and quiet focus operation when taking photos, and near-silence when shooting video
  • Wide focusing ring with full-time manual focus capabilities

50.5mm and approximate weight of 235g
  • Maximum magnification of 0.25x and minimum focusing distance of 0.23m

Apple joins Instagram to share top notch #ShotoniPhone photos

08 Aug

Apple has officially joined Instagram. The tech giant has always been conspicuously silent on social media, but as the iPhone becomes an increasingly powerful and popular tool for capturing high-quality photos and videos, Apple finally caved and joined Instagram to share some of its favorite #ShotoniPhone creations.

The news broke yesterday on Mashable, where the @Apple account debuted alongside a few promises: namely, that you will never seen “photo galleries, commercials or other company marketing,” on the Instagram account. No, @Apple is all about featuring “curated and credit” photos shot by iPhone users around the world.

Or, put in more inspirational terms by Apple itself:

A post shared by apple (@apple) on

So far, the account includes several videos featuring different photographers talking over a slideshow of their work, explaining why they capture the kinds of photos they do.

If you want to be considered for a feature, all you have to do is tag your photos with #ShotoniPhone and wait for a call. According to Mashable, Apple says they will “never use anyone’s photos without permission,” so that tag doesn’t sign away any photo rights or anything… it just puts you on Apple’s radar.

Check out the @Apple account for yourself here, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Ming Thein joins Hasselblad as Chief of Strategy

29 Mar

Hasselblad has announced that commercial photographer and blogger Ming Thein has been appointed its Chief of Strategy. Thein is known for his popular blog, and is no stranger to Hasselblad as a former ambassador for the company. In addition to his photography chops, Thein brings a degree in Physics from Oxford and years of experience working in finance and private equity firms to Hasselblad. Plus, we think he’s got some good ideas about how cameras should function.

Hasselblad has been going through a transitional period lately – the company never denied reports that DJI became a majority stakeholder, and recently announced the departure of CEO Perry Oosting. Certainly Oosting had a hand in modernizing the company’s offerings and righting the ship after some unfortunate missteps. There’s more work ahead, however, as the company works to meet demand for its X1D mirrorless camera.

Update: Consumer electronics maker JVC Kenwood has joined the Micro Four Thirds standard and said it will develop products for the system. The company is showing two prototype 4K-capable cameras, including a compact, handheld model at NAB in Las Vegas. We stopped by the JVC Kenwood booth and got a first glimpse of the cameras on display. Interestingly, the company says both cameras will have Super 35 sensors (around 21 x 12mm), which is wider than the original Four Thirds sensor format which the standard was designed around. Learn more
