Flying your drone into the Space Needle can land you in jail

17 Jan

A small crew setting up for a fireworks display on top of Seattle’s famed Space Needle received an unexpected visitor on New Year’s Eve: a drone. The vehicle came crashing onto the Needle’s top platform in the afternoon of Saturday, December 31st and luckily, nobody was hurt. The footage above shows the drone hovering around the tower for several minutes before making a beeline toward the platform.

There are no city statutes prohibiting drone use in Seattle. Since nobody was hurt and there was no property damage the drone operator would not be charged on either of those counts. However, the pilot may face a charge of reckless endangerment – a gross misdemeanor that carries up to a year prison sentence and/or a $ 5,000 fine in the state of Washington.

It seems that officials have tracked down the drone’s owner, and Geekwire may have found that person’s (now locked) Twitter account. A cached tweet appears to show the operator blaming DJI’s ‘return to home’ function for the crash.

The filmmakers who took a stroll on Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic are facing jail time

08 Nov

Three of the four Canadian filmmakers who were caught roaming onto Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic hot spring have pled not guilty to charges of foot travel in a thermal area and disorderly conduct. Hamish McNab Campbell Cross was the only member of the group representing clothing brand High on Life to plead guilty to his charges. He’ll pay a fine of $ 8000 and accepts a five year unsupervised probation.

The remaining three have received court-appointed lawyers and may face a bench trial if they do not accept plea deals. The Jackson Hole News and Guide reports that the group’s previous attorney, who removed himself from the case due to a conflict of interest, mentioned that the US Attorney is considering jail time.

The Grand Prismatic incident is just one of quite a few recent cases park vandalism. Stiffer penalties for offenders may help reduce incidences of vandalism, but is an $ 8000 fine enough? Do the filmmakers pleading not guilty deserve jail time? Tell us what you think in the comments.

06 Jul

More than a year after their arrest in February 2012 for hiding massive corporate losses dating back to the 1990s, three former Olympus executives received suspended jail terms for crimes they admitted committing. In a story marked as one of the largest frauds in Japanese history, the executives conspired to cover up approximately $ 1.5 billion in investment losses. Olympus itself was fined ¥700 million (about $ 7 million) for the actions of Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, former chairman, Hideo Yamada, former auditor, and Hisashi Mori, former executive vice president.
