Disney’s Invisible Flashes

28 Jul

While visiting Disneyland Paris, long-time reader Paul Mason of Hartlepool, UK watched a Disney staff photographer work a room doing shots of kids with the characters.

He noticed a remote on the photographer's camera, but saw no flashes anywhere — until they went off.

Get an Invisible Black Background to Your Portraits – Shooting Anywhere [VIDEO]

14 Jun

In this video Glyn Dewis demonstrates how he gets his ‘Invisible Black Background’ effect when taking a portraits which will allow you to take a low key atmospheric portrait with a black background anywhere – even outdoors as he does in this video.

To get the shot Glyn just uses his DSLR, a single Speedlight Flash, a cheap umbrella and a PocketWizard to trigger the flash (although you can do this with any method of triggering a remote flash that you have).

Want to see some more examples of what can be done with this effect – check out Glyn’s blog posts on the topic here and here.

Liu Bolin is Back: ‘Invisible Man’ Artist (Dis)Appears Again

08 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

invisible liu bolin

The master of urban camouflage has returned, this time exhibiting his latest photographic wonders at the Galerie Paris-Beijing – as always, without the aid of Photoshop or any other post-editing processes.

invisible map and family

This time, Liu Bolin slips into in a range of familiarly public contexts, in front of iconic buildings and street graffiti … but now also sometimes with companions, or in strangely commercial settings, blending in with store shelves of stuffed animals, fresh vegetables and cell phones. His art is evolving its message.

invisible costume public spaces

It is worth noting that his intention is not to fully vanish into his surroundings, but, instead, to let them encompass him – the  trompe l’oeil is intentionally incomplete.

invisible camouflage commercial context

He is making visual statements about change, commercialization, and the sublimation of the individual to the role of context and process.

Invisible Apparel: Material-Free Dresses Made of Light

04 Feb

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

light art dress

Combining light art photography and high fashion, these show-stopping, runway-worthy gowns are invisible until completed, and manufactured without physical material.

Atton Conrad sets the models in pitch-black rooms, then writes with lights around them, resulting in a flowing and ephemeral slow-captured creation that is only visible after each shot is finished.

Conrad has worked extensively in both of the fields found intersecting here, as a veteran photographer and light artist alike. “London born, Belfast bred and originally set for a career in science, the inherited genes from an artist father & actress mother prevailed. He made for the bright lights of his birth city to persue his love of photography.” He was, as it were, drawn to the light – limelight, spotlight, and lighting itself.

Of his work, he says that “it started with light trails, but grew far beyond that, as i developed my methodology and custom designed ‘light brushes’ I realised that the techniques could give me incredibly fine control over light and texture, to an unique almost hyperreal result. I have always been known for my classic lighting, and still take great pleasure in it, but this took it a completely fresh direction.”

Wind Shield: Invisible Air Umbrella Keeps You Dry in the Rain

29 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

Umbrellas are already halfway there: compact as possible, they deploy in a quick motion and retract almost as easily. But problems remain: they are wet when you walk indoors, and their intentionally-then structure remains fragile.

Thus the Air Umbrella (or perhaps: unbrella) by Je Sung Park & Woo Jung Kwon which forces an artificial wind up through its handle that shoots out the top and deflects incoming raindrops before they can hit your head.

Adjustable by design, the power of the air pushed through the system can be varied based on conditions or the desire to extend your protective canopy to a walking companion. Likewise, the rod you hold can telescope based on need and for portability.

The feasibility remains to be seen – one could imagine it would be difficult if even possible to produce the kind of force required, and that batteries might drain too fast for it to be broadly useful. Still, technology has a way of catching up to good design. Another point of skepticism: its creators pitch it as a green alternative to plastic bags or one-use ponchos, but what about regular umbrellas? Perhaps, depending upon the durability of the latter versus the power usage of the Air Umbrella alternative.

Public Camouflage: Make-Up Artist Makes Models Invisible

22 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Guerilla Ads & Marketing. ]

Illusion relies on expectation – we glance but only glimpse what is familiar and the rest blends neatly into the background, particularly as we go about our busy lives in a bustling urban center.

As nifty as these body-painted costumes by Carolyn Roper (via DailyMail) are, the reactions of passers by are the best part – a shocked bus rider or fruit-stand shopper caught in their moment of surprise by waiting photographers.

To complete the spectacle, every element is critical, from the lines of reflection on a vehicle to the details of fresh vegetables drawn on to carefully mimic tomatoes, beets, pumpkins and lettuce.

The stunts were a marketing move by Really TV for a CIA drama titled Covert Affairs – it is hard to say how well such guerrilla marketing campaigns translate to new viewers for television shows, but thanks to publishers picking up the story, well, surely a few of those spooked by these urban camouflaging antics will check out this show about spooks.

Sandra draws an abstract thing: 5 of 52 (invisible pen/ animation)

16 Oct

The music is Murray Gold’s “I am the Doctor”, played by Mark Fowler aka UKPiano and you can watch him play this very piece right here: www.youtube.com This is the fifth video in my attempt to make 52 drawing videos in one year. I know, i’ve fallen a few weeks behind. (Pretty standard for me unfortunately). But i wanted to do something a little bit different and this one took a little bit more time. The video is made of about 6000 frames. And by that i mean I clicked the mouse with my right big toe 6000 times to take the photos. 6000 times. My leg hurts, my hand hurts, my back hurts and my shoulder hurts, but the outcome is my favorite thing i’ve ever done 🙂 And i know that there’s a 30-second out of focus scene. I only noticed when it was too late to start over again so we’re stuck with that. I took the photos with my Nikon D80 and Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens, using Nikon Camera Control pro with my computer. I use a Signo uni-ball dx 0.38mm ink pen.

I was able to get my hands on the new Magic Lantern build a day early so we went out and grabbed some test shots at one of our favorite locations (from The McCormick Brothers) above Foster Lake in Oregon. HDR (High Dynamic Range) is performed in camera by capturing two different ISO values. Most of these shots were at ISO 100-800 or 200-1600. Those two streams are then split and re-fused back together in post production to produce the HDR video. Magic Lantern is free for download and everything you need to produce HDR video is included and also free. Alex is truly a pioneer and he is offering the 5D Mark II build to those who donate. It will eventually be released (as this one is BETA) but you can get it early by donating. magiclantern.wikia.com Music – James Newton Howard – Prologue – Lady in the Water Check out our website or follow us on Facebook or Twitter: neumannfilms.com Facebook: www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com
