Leica FOTOS 2.0 app update adds Lightroom CC integration and new iPadOS features

22 Nov

In an update today, Leica released version 2.0 of its Leica FOTOS mobile app for Android and iOS. The app is offered in both Free and Pro versions, the latter of which includes iPad support and is targeted at users who want to get more things done on mobile.

Leica FOTOS 2.0 provides users with access to their own personal Leica Account and ‘seamless’ integration with Adobe Lightroom CC (iOS/iPadOS). Assuming the user has the paid version of the app, FOTOS 2.0 includes a dedicated button for accessing Lightroom, which brings with it the tools to edit DNG and JPG images on a smartphone or iPad.

FOTOS 2.0 likewise includes an iPad-specific update that adds new features made possible by iPadOS, the version of iOS recently released for Apple’s slates. With these, iPad users can use Split View and Slide Over for toggling between apps, plus there’s the Drag & Drop functionality for sharing images by swiping.

The mobile app connects with the user’s Leica camera using Bluetooth or WiFI. Once connected, the user can capture and transfer images from within the app, which also supports editing and direct sharing to social media platforms. Leica says it made a number of ‘refinements’ in FOTOS 2.0, offering things like faster gallery loading speeds and double the data transfer rates.

The Leica FOTOS 2.0 app supports the following camera models:

  • Leica S (Typ 007)
  • Leica SL/SL2
  • Leica M10
  • Leica M10-P
  • Leica M10-D
  • Leica Q/Q2
  • Leica TL/TL2
  • Leica CL
  • Leica C-Lux
  • Leica D-Lux
  • Leica V-Lux

Leica FOTOS 2.0 is available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play now. The Pro version of the app requires a $ 49.99 purchase.

Utah Senator introduces Drone Integration and Zoning Act of 2019

22 Oct

Republican Utah Senator Mike Lee was heavily involved in the unsuccessful Drone Federalism Act of 2017, a bill sponsored by California Senator Dianne Feinstein that sought to restrict drone usage by giving local government and property owners jurisdiction over National Airspace. Now he’s back with a new bill, the Drone Integration and Zoning Act, that will allow cities, states, and Native American tribes to set their own rules on low-flying drones, effectively overriding regulations set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

In a statement regarding the new bill, Sen. Lee said:

‘The FAA cannot feasibly or efficiently oversee millions of drones in every locality throughout the country […] The reason that the states have sovereign police powers to protect the property of their citizens is because issues of land use, privacy, trespass, and law enforcement make sense at the state and local level. The best way to ensure public safety and allow this innovative industry to thrive is to empower the people closest to the ground to make local decisions in real time and that is exactly what the Drone Integration and Zoning Act does.’

Basically, if passed, it would give home owners, local businesses, and counties full control over the first 200 feet of airspace above their designated property lines. Above 200 feet, FAA rules would apply. The FAA is not in favor of being overruled by local governments as these new ordinances would create even more confusion amongst drone operators. In a statement to Axios, DJI’s Director of U.S. legislative affairs, Mark Aitken, said the bill would ‘spur state and local governments across the country to impose harsh and conflicting taxes and fees on professional and recreational drone flights, throttling an industry still in its infancy.’

Currently, 34 out of 50 U.S. states, including California, are legally allowed to enforce their own regulations and restrictions on drone use at a county level. One state where this isn’t allowed is Michigan and a group of people, including the Michigan Coalition of Drone Operators, is fighting back. Back in December, a Genesee County sheriff arrested and detained Jason Harrison for flying in a park. The flight was legal, despite them attempting to rewrite legislation on drone use to fit their preferences – something that is in violation of Michigan State Law – Public Act 436 of 2016.

A follow-up trial is scheduled for November 8th in Flint, Michigan. If the judge rules in Harrison’s favor, it will hopefully set a precedent for how National Airspace is dictated across the U.S. While the Drone Integration and Zoning Act of 2019 will likely not gain much traction with Congress, it’s still worth writing your Senator to explain how patchwork drone laws will only cause chaos and confusion amongst operators and lawmakers, alike.

DaVinci Resolve 16 has new Neural Engine, native Frame.io integration and more

11 Apr

In addition to the new battery grip for the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, Blackmagic has announced DaVinci Resolve 16, the latest version of its video editor that brings a massive collection of new and updated features.

The standout feature of DaVinci Resolve 16 is a new cut page designed specifically ‘for editors that need to work quickly and on tight deadlines.’ The updated cut page is an alternate edit page that features a streamlined interface and a new toolset that makes it easier to ingest, process and export footage.

In Blackmagic’s own words, ‘The [new] cut page isn’t about simplification, it’s about removing the things customers don’t need and building powerful, professional tools that help customers work more quickly. And, sometimes, it means borrowing the things that were great about the past and bringing them into the future.’

These new and improved tools include source tape, a new feature that brings all of the clips in a users bin into the viewer as a single long tape so it’s easier to scrub though, select the in/out points and bring the needed footage into the timeline. Another updated tool within the interface is a dual timeline arrangement that makes it possible to see both detailed sections of footage, as well as the whole timeline at once. This makes it easier to get both a macro and micro look at the work, rather than having to zoom in and out constantly.

DaVinci Resolve 16’s Neural Engine at work picking out faces from various clips.

Blackmagic Design has also added its new DaVinci Neural Engine, which uses ‘state of the art deep neural networks and learning, along with artificial intelligence to power new features such as speed warp motion estimation for retiming, super scale for up-scaling footage, auto color and color matching, facial recognition and more.’

The DaVinci Neural Engine is cross-platform and uses the latest GPU technologies to provide improved performance when working on footage and help to streamline the editing process. Blackmagic Design specifically references the DaVinci Neural Engine’s ability to use facial recognition to automatically sort through footage and add individual clips to folders based on who is in the shot.

ResolveFX has also been updated in DaVinci Resolve 16. You can now add vignettes, drop shadows, analog noise/damage, chromatic aberration, video stylization and even remove objects. Blackmagic Design says there have also been improvements to the scalene, beauty, face refinement, blanking fill, warper, dead pixel fixer and colorspace transformation plugins.

Additional features added and improved upon in DaVinci Resolve 16 include new adjustment clips to help add effects and grades to clips in the timeline, a new quick export tool for uploading videos to YouTube and Vimeo from anywhere inside the app and GPU-accelerated scopes to help keep an eye on the technical side of things. Blackmagic has also partnered up with remote collaboration tool Frame.io to add native support in DaVinci Resolve 16. Now, Frame.io is baked right into the software, rather than working as an iteration.

Below is a 25-minute video of Blackmagic Design walking through all of the changes found inside DaVinci Resolve 16:

DaVinci Resolve 16 public beta is available to download from the Blackmagic Design website, where you will also find additional details.

Video: Zeiss shows hands-on footage of its ZX1 camera with Lightroom integration

24 Dec

In September 2018, Zeiss announced the ZX1, a fixed-lens, full-frame camera that has onboard Adobe Lightroom CC integration. Yesterday, Zeiss shared a two minute video that gives the world its first hands-on look at the ZX1 and its onboard editing abilities.

Throughout the video, portrait photographer and photojournalist Sabrina Weniger walks around the streets of Little Tokyo in Düsseldorf narrating her experience with the ZX1 and the features she most enjoys about it. Unsurprisingly, she doesn’t hit on the negatives.

In addition to her overall positive thoughts on the camera, Zeiss shares a glimpse of the camera itself, including the 35mm F2 lens and the massive 4.3-inch touchscreen display that’s used to compose, view and edit photos using the onboard Lightroom. The video also details the onboard version of Lightroom CC in action, as she edits a portrait captured inside a small shop right on the rear display of the camera.

Nothing new is necessarily learned from the video, but it’s the first time Zeiss has shown off the camera in action before its yet-to-be-determined launch date said to be in the first part of 2019.
