Missing Pyramid: Louvre Installation Makes Iconic Monument Disappear

In a work of large-scale urban camouflage, French street artist JR has made the iconic glass pyramid standing outside the Musée du Louvre disappear. At least, it seems to disappear, when viewed from one very particular angle, thanks to a massive wrapping printed with a photograph of the museum’s facade. Known for paste-ups on a monumental scale as well as digital projections on architecture, JR transforms the 11,000-square-foot pyramid by I.M. Pei, which became a Paris landmark after its installation in 1989.

The illusion convincingly stands in for the entrance to the Louvre palace, despite being rendered in black and white, and matches up perfectly with the facade. Before the Pyramid became publicly accepted as an integral part of the Louvre, it was controversial, with some critics arguing that the clash of architectural styles was an affront to what the museum itself represents. In camouflaging it, JR takes us back to the days before it was built, leaving us with the distinct feeling that something is missing. The display will be in place through June 27th, 2016.

“Making the Pyramid disappear is a way for me to distance myself from my subject,” says JR. “The feud between traditional and modern tastes in art and architecture is nothing new. The Pyramid, Buren’s columns at the Palais-Royal, and the Pompidou Center – all of these caused controversy. My work is about transmitting history to better understand the present, and find echoes with our own times. What happened in the past is part of a broader context that can still have relevance for today.”

“By erasing the Louvre Pyramid, I am highlighting the way Pei made the Louvre relevant for his time, while bringing the Louvre back to its original state. The Pyramid is one of the most photographed French monuments. I am redirecting its energy, because people are going to have to move around it. They are going to look for the best angle to get the full impact of the anamorphic image, and really make the Pyramid disappear.”

A Mirage You Can Touch: Liquid Marble Installation Fools the Eye

Even crueler than a real mirage, this convincing illusion continues to look like a real body of water until you reach down to touch its surface, only to find that it’s as solid as anything you’ve ever touched. Thankfully, this faux aquatic feature isn’t sitting in a desert somewhere to fake out unsuspecting travelers, but rather placed in the courtyard of the magnificent Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire Centre D’Arts et de nature, a garden center in France. The piece will be on display through November 2nd.

Designer Mathieu Lehanneur achieved the effect with a marriage of 3D computer software, hand-polished green marble and natural light, so it looks like wind is rippling on the surface of a river. What would have been a split second of scenic beauty, experienced and then forgotten by the naked eye or captured in a two-dimensional photograph, is now frozen in time, made into a durable object that could last thousands of years.

“I wanted to address the garden with water as my muse,” says Lehanneur. “The water whose presence we sense even before we first catch sight of it below the chateau, flowing uninterrupted to the sea. Some say the Loire is France’s last wild river; it shapes and nourishes the landscapes, it passes through without ever pausing along the way.”

“I hope that, when passing the Chateau gates, the visitor will experience something that comes close to a magic portal, to a forbidden place in so many fairytales. Everything is liquid in this space, evanescent, enlightened, and yet it is executed in a material that is one of the most solid imaginable.”

Synth Series: Yarn Installation Represents Music in 3D

An abandoned building becomes the setting for a surreal installation of colorful criss-crossing yarn as artist duo Toki seeks to render music in physical form. Recent architecture grads Toluwalase Rufai and Khai Grubbs present their visual soundscape as part of their ‘Synth’ series, temporarily altering public space “through establishing rhythm, movement, transparency, and ephemerality.”

The setting is a dilapidated building on the corners of Channing and Reed streets in Washington, D.C. It took the artists two days to install an undisclosed amount of yarn, winding it around support columns and occasionally using nailed-on boards for extra support. The project was completed guerrilla-style, and D.C. residents who tried to get in to see it in person report that it has since been cut down, with ‘No Trespassing’ signs posted on the property.

The first yarn piece Toki created was carried out in a more accessible place, enabling the public to watch  the piece take form over a period of three days. They hoped that occupying an abandoned building would “engage the viewer on an urban exploration… inciting a sense of wonder.” This edition of the series may not have been up long, but there will be more installed throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

“Our initial decision to create this series was more impulsive than planned, and influenced by the desire to express the music we hear three-dimensionally,” say the artists. “These creations allow us to represent the sound of music as physical worlds. They start with lines of distinct colors you can follow and the more you immerse yourself, the more they blend in and the more you surrender to the symphony of color. Similar to music, the space we create allows you to slip between worlds, to be in two places simultaneously.”

Amazing Modern Maze: Dystopian Steel Labyrinth Installation

This steel labyrinth looks like something left behind after the production of a dystopian film, its irregular grid of steel rising and falling onto the concrete surface outside Belgium’s C-mine art center. Designed by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, the maze is an immersive experience in what the artist sees as architecture in its essential form: “a composition of walls that define spaces.” Made of 186 tons of metal, the installation features vertical surfaces towering over 49 feet in the air to properly disorient visitors.

Entering the maze, you pass through a series of geometric doorways cut into the steel, including a sphere, a cylinder and a cone. Depending on where you are in the maze, these cut-outs might offer a tiny glimpse of what’s on the other side of a wall, or open to reveal a succession of similar cut-outs passing all the way through the installation.

The steel, and how it is cut and arranged, offers a unique architectural visual that changes according to your perspective, shifting from abstract lines into distinct geometries and sometimes creating optical illusions that make you uncertain whether you’re looking at a two-dimensional or three-dimensional surface.

A nearby installation of antique mine shafts offers a different way to experience the maze: from above. You can pass through it as an active participant, and then view it as a whole, taking in its complexities from a more detached bird’s eye view.

Light Lines: Stunning String Installation Inside Abandoned Church

What seems at first to be narrow rays of turquoise light streaming in through the stained glass windows of a vacant Gothic Revival church turn out to be over 6,500 feet of paracord painstakingly wound around ornate posts and columns. Artist Aaron Asis temporarily transformed West Philadelphia’s St. Andrew’s Collegiate Chapel, which has been closed for more than 40 years, with a geometric string installation that shifts the spatial perception within its darkened nave.

Entitled Ci-Lines, the project re-opened the disused chapel for three days over three weekends so visitors could take in both the grandeur of the church itself and the surreal sight of criss-crossing string creating new geometries within the negative space. Built in 1924, the chapel was used for sermon lessons and school services until 1974, and though the larger complex has been reclaimed for other uses, the chapel remains vacant.

“The geometry of Ci-Lines is like an artistic exercise in connecting the dots, crisscrossing overhead and inviting visitors to visually explore a sculptural form as a portal into the nuances of a vacant environ,” says Asis. “The resultant series of cords in tension draws direct inspiration from the existing architectural form inside the chapel. These cords literally render a woven and symmetrical connection between the ornamental posts lining the chapel walls and architectural columns featured along the balconies above, combining to act as a temporary catalyst for observation, investigation, conversation, and realization of spatial majesty in vacant context.”

Asia hopes that the project will renew interest in the historic structure, helping to preserve it as the cityscape around it shifts and changes. Making use of vacant spaces for art installations helps the public see them in a new light and can spur ideas for revitalization.

Stellar Caves: Illuminated Underground String Installation

Eighty-two feet under the surface of the earth, hidden within the cellars of the Maison Ackerman winery in Saumur, France, an eerie blue-violet wonderland blooms in carefully constructed arrangements of UV-coated string. Artist Julien Salaud wound 28 miles of cotton thread around 65,000 nails for his installation Fleuve Céleste, which explores themes of nature, mysticism and shamanism against the natural rock walls of the space.

At first glance, the images seem as if they were created on a computer. But anyone who takes a tour of the winery can walk within tunnels of the glowing string, illuminated by a projected ultraviolet light.

According to Salaud, the work offers “a different viewpoint of what an animal can be: that of the Cartesian or the geneticist, of the predator or the prey, of the sorcerer or the mystic.” Conceived specifically for this unusual space, the work will be on display for three years and is the first exhibition originating from the Ackerman + Fontrevaud La Scéne residency.

Eye on the City: Visitors Dangle from Urban Art Installation

Take a seat, fasten your seatbelt and allow an usher to wheel you into a giant eyeball dangling outside of a building so you can take in all of the sights without anyone else present. The exhibit, entitled EYE, asks you to look first at the city, and then at yourself. Installed in five different buildings throughout the city of Den Bosch in Holland, the project by Belgian artists Pascal Leboucq and Lucas De Man features enlarged reproductions of the real pupils of local residents.

EYE is currently installed in a theater, a modern hospital, an old factory that’s about to be redeveloped, a monument and a corporate business. Billed as “an extraordinary audio-visual theatrical experience,” each eye seats one visitor at a time. After taking a seat and entering the eye, they’re invited to relax and take a look. Then, the guide asks them, “What do you see?”

“A city with eyes is a city that looks and shows itself,” says De Man. “No closed doors or shut windows, but open. We gave the city eyes so you can hang in the air above the world and look. Just look.”

The installation will remain in place until November 1st, with tickets available online, and will tour the world in 2015.

Inst-Int 2014: 3 Must-See Installation Artists & Designers

Featuring an all-star lineup of renowned interaction designers and installation artists, the second-annual INST-INT is a Minneapolis gathering focused the art of interactivity for objects, environments and experiences. From the creators of the Eyeo Festival, this September event will bring together presenters and guests from around the world to talk about amazing projects. Janet Echelman builds incredible public works that respond to forces of nature, including light, wind and water. Working in open urban spaces, her iconic net sculptures represent “a sophisticated mixture of ancient craft and modern technology [that have] led to collaborations with aeronautical and mechanical engineers, architects, lighting designers, landscape architects, and fabricators.”

Affixed to local architecture, some of her dynamic pieces involve audience participation, with observers choreographing real-time light shows to dance on her suspended pieces. The scale of these creations is hard to fathom – Skies Painted with Unnumbered Sparks in Vancouver, for instance, consists of “a complex matrix of 860,000 hand and machine-made knots and 145 miles of braided fiber weighing nearly 3,500 pounds span 745 feet.”

Daniel Leithinger works with the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab, with work on tangible interfaces and interactive shape displays previously featured on WebUrbanist.

Turning gestures into physical responses, these experimental interface prototypes imply rich possibilities for remote interactions of all kinds, both practical and artistic in nature, enabling actions-at-a-distance in ways that were previously impossible or cost-prohibitive.

At INST-INT this year, the So-So team are inviting participants to join them “for an off-screen behind-the-scenes look at the asks, solves, and learnings of the interactive installation business. We’ll lift the hood on some of our recent projects [and] talk about lo-res data viz, interfacing with architecture and architects, the realities of making things for people that aren’t you, and the pains and pleasures of working with non-traditional display technologies.”

Travel Through Trees: Root-Like Wooden Tunnel Installation

You may have to crouch a little to take a journey through this system of tunnels, but it’s worth it to feel as if you’re traveling through the roots of an enormous tree. Artist Henrique Oliveira has transformed a bare white gallery space at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade in São Paulo with a cavernous installation that looks as if nature has taken over.

‘Transarquitetônica‘ fuses real tree branches with tunnels made from reclaimed scrap wood to create an interconnected organic mass that visitors can actually walk through. The wood is an inexpensive temporary siding , known as tapumes, which is often used to obscure construction sites and then discarded.

“It’s wood that has been taken from nature, has been cut down into geometric structures, and they have been used by society and discharged,” says Oliveira. “And I take it back and I rebuild the forms there again, creating true nature forms. It’s bringing back the tree aspects to the material. It’s not just an object, it’s an experience.”

Oliveira’s largest installation to date, ‘Transarquitetônica’ grew from the artist’s original vision because the space provided by the gallery was so vast. The installation will be on display through the end of November.

Virtual Light: Facade Installation Casts Fake Illumination

A temporary project set in Madrid, this bright yellow artistic reconfiguration was rendered all the more engaging due to its location in a semi-dark alleyway of the city.

It was created by (fos), an alliance of artists and designers (the word meaning ‘light’ in Greek and ‘melted’ in Catalan), utilizing the front of a vegan restaurant in the semi-secluded Lope de Vega street.

A combination of sun-bright yellow tape and paint were deployed in a pattern intended to abstractly simulate the casting of light, surrounded by shadow, with a few artistic liberties taken in terms of angles and scope.

The context, mostly made of stone or painted in muted tones, made the vivid yellow intervention stand out as something extreme, drawing a great deal of attention from passers by through its stark contrasts.
