10,000 Headshots initiative saw 200 photographers give free headshots to unemployed workers

28 Jul

Photographers from across the United States joined together on July 22 to participate in the ‘10,000 Headshots’ initiative, a group effort that involved offering free professional headshots to unemployed workers with the goal of helping them secure new jobs. The initiative was coordinated by Headshot Booker, which explains on its website that these sessions were offered to anyone who was unemployed as of July 22 when the sessions took place.

The initiative was a success, according to Headshot Booker. Participants interested in getting headshots were required to pre-register for a 10-minute session and each location was limited to 50 total appointments. More than 200 photographers participated across 50 states and used Brookfield Properties retail locations with pop-ups as their studios.

The agency notes that every location used proper social distancing and safety measures to keep everyone safe, including contactless delivery of images and having photographers wear masks.

Headshots are an important aspect of finding work, the agency points out. Career-centric social platform LinkedIn claims that profiles featuring professional headshots are nine times as likely as other accounts to receive connection requests. Paying for a headshot while unemployed is particularly difficult, however, making it harder for those in need of a job to find one.

Professional photographer and Headshot Booker co-founder Peter Hurley explained:

Unfortunately, many job seekers underestimate the value of a professional headshot, instead opting for a snapshot taken by a friend or even worse a selfie. The headshot has become the cornerstone of one’s digital brand identity and we want to empower people as they go through the process of procuring a new job and getting back into the workforce.

The initiative was launched in partnership with Canon, MySpotPhotos and several other companies. Ultimately, every registered participant left the pop-up studios with a professional headshot for their resumes. Headshot Booker says this was the ‘largest, single-day photo initiative’ of its kind, one that comes amid widespread unemployment caused by the pandemic.

Fujifilm Contest

If you’re a university student, or you’re interested in following the work of student photographers and videographers around the US, then I have good news:

Fujifilm is launching its Students of Storytelling contest, which awards 30 students up to $ 3000 USD in Fujifilm gear.

Its purpose?

To help students tell their own stories through photography and videography.

As Fujifilm explains, ” We are passionate about stories and truly believe that the future of storytelling rests in the hands of today’s college students. This is why the Students of Storytelling contest will award up to $ 3,000 of Fujifilm gear to a select group of winners to help bring their creative stories out into the light.”

Note that you don’t have to be an accomplished artist to take part; all current part-time and full-time college students are eligible, excepting Florida residents.

Fujifilm does offer entry guidelines, stating that the ideal proposal “should be designed to tell a cohesive ‘story’ of a human, or life-related experience, event, challenge, objective, relationship(s), approach, passion, and/or interest that may be depicted and effectively communicated through photographic images or video.”

Fujifilm also notes that participants will need to adhere to the CDC’s COVID-19 social distancing guidelines when carrying out their project.

The submission period goes until May 31st, during which eligible students can submit their proposed stories in written, video, or photographic format. The first half of June will be spent judging the entries, and students will be notified of their success at the end of June.

At that point, winners will be given the opportunity to choose Fujifilm equipment totaling up to $ 3000 USD. Winners will then have 90 days to complete and submit their stories, which are to be shared via social media, as well as on Fujifilm’s Create Forever website.

So if you’re an eligible student, head on over to Fujifilm’s website, where you can submit your own proposal to be considered for the Students of Storytelling contest.

And for everyone else:

If you’re interested in following the contest and all the winners, be sure to check Create-Forever.com for updates.

17 Dec

Nikon recently released the Z50, a compact mirrorless camera that starts at under $ 900. The company is so confident that photographers will love their product that they’ve recently introduced the Yellow Program. Besides offering expedited shipping upon placing an order with the Nikon store, customers can try out the Z50 for up to 30 days, upon receiving the camera, and return it free of charge if they’re not satisfied with their purchase.

‘We’re so confident that you’ll fall in love with the photos and videos you’ll get with your new mirrorless Z50 camera, especially when compared to the ones you get with your smartphone, we’ll let you try one at home for 30 days. If you don’t fall in love, send it back to us for a full refund, including shipping,’ reads the introductory paragraph to the Yellow Program’s site.

According to Nikon, the Z50 is the smallest interchangeable lens DX-format camera on the market and the first mirrorless camera in the company’s Z series. It features a 20.9MP CMOS sensor, an EXPEED 6 processor that can capture imagery up to 11 fps, and can record 4K/30p video that is also capable of slow motion and time-lapse. It’s connectivity includes both WiFi and Bluetooth.

There are 3 options available for purchasing the Z50.

There are three ways the Z50 can be purchased: the Body Only Kit, which includes a battery, charger, and 16MB memory card, the One Lens Kit that also comes with a 16-50mm VR lens, and the Two Lens Kit which gives you both the 16-50mm VR lens plus a 50–250mm VR telephoto zoom lens. All three kits include free expedited shipping.

In order to receive the free 30-day trial, a purchase is required up front. The option to use PayPal, to pay the total fee in installments, is also available. A full refund will be administered, granted the camera and accessories are returned in their original condition. The promotion also includes the FTZ lens adapter that is required for those wanting to use NIKKOR lenses with the Z50. The Yellow Program will run through March 31, 2020.
