Luminar 4.1 update brings improved Sky Replacement, Portrait Enhancer and Erase tools

Skylum has launched version 4.1 of its Luminar image editing and organization software, providing improvements to the AI-powered AI Sky Replacement and Portrait Enhancer tools, as well as the Erase tool.

AI Sky Replacement now lets users add ‘atmospheric haze’ as it is usually seen during daytime, to their images. The company says that in combination with the Sky Temperature and Sky Exposure sliders this allows for a realistic light balance between the replaced sky and the image foreground. This is particularly useful when dealing with strongly saturated replacement skies that don’t match the foreground.

The Erase tool has been upgraded to allow for more precise object removal with complicated backgrounds or complex gradients. The Erase tool now creates softer edges and Skylum says a new algorithm comes up with smarter selections for area replacement.

Portrait Enhancer now works with a wider range of images, also enhancing faces that are smaller in the frame, for example in group shots or environmental portraits.

In addition, the update brings a new Adjustments Amount slider that lets you blend image enhancements with the original image and general performance improvements. More information is available on the Skylum website.

A month after its initial release, Luminar 4 receives update with new and improved tools, performance upgrades and more.

NEW YORK, NY – December 23, 2019 — Today, Skylum announced its first update to Luminar 4, complete with several feature additions and improvements to make workflow easier, and to allow for more control in its machine-learning tools. Released a month after its initial launch, the Luminar 4.1 update includes updates to AI Sky Replacement, the Erase tool, Portrait Enhancer and more.

“Since we released Luminar 4 last month, we could not be more thrilled with what we’re seeing photographers create. While the new Luminar 4.1 update already packs some new and improved features, photographers can expect to see more updates to Luminar over the coming months, especially for its machine-learning tools.

NEW Atmospheric Haze for AI Sky Replacement

With Luminar 4, Skylum added the world’s first automatic sky replacement technology to its software. AI Sky Replacement gets a feature update in Luminar 4.1, letting photographers naturally add atmospheric haze that is usually seen during the day, to their images.

Coupled with the Sky Temperature and Sky Exposure sliders, it’s now possible to achieve a perfectly balanced, harmonious image in a single tool. It keeps the light balance between the replaced sky and image foreground more realistic, leading to a more “finished” result.

Atmospheric Haze is the perfect addition when dealing with harsh daylight photos with clear blue skies. If you have an oversaturated sky or if the brightness of your sky doesn’t match the foreground, it will add haze to make for a more accurate image.

NEW Erase tool technology

The Erase tool has been upgraded, using an all-new technology for precise object removal. Removing unwanted pixels is easier than ever, even with complicated backgrounds or complex gradients. Edges on the Erase tool are much softer, and the new algorithm means smarter selections for area replacement.

Portrait Enhancer improvements

Introduced with Luminar 4, Portrait Enhancer has also received improvements. The tool can now be used on even more images, including those with smaller faces like groups or environmental portraits.

Adjustments Amount slider

If you ever need to tone down an adjustment slightly, the new Adjustments Amount slider has you covered. It’s the perfect option to help you blend your tools with the original image. Just use the Layers tool to dial back the Adjustments Amount slider.

You’ll find this new control for all image and adjustment layers. Traditional opacity controls remain available. The Adjustments Amount slider works with all tools except for transform options like Lens Correction, Slim Face and Enlarge Eyes.

Additional performance and capability improvements

Luminar 4.1 brings full support for Adobe Photoshop 2020, allowing you to use Luminar 4.1 as a plugin or as a Smart Filter with Smart Objects.

Thanks to Luminar users, several performance improvements have been made, including memory management, user experience and stability, helping to make Luminar better than ever.

How to update

Luminar 4.1 is a free update to current Luminar 4 users. On a Mac, click in the Top Menu Bar and choose Luminar 4 > Check for updates. On Windows, in the Top Menu Bar choose Help > Check for updates.

If you are running Luminar as a plugin with Photoshop, Lightroom Classic or Photoshop Elements, it’s also recommended you rerun the plugin installer.

An expanded user manual has also been added, making it easier than ever for users to search and find answers to questions they might have about the software.

Nikon Coolpix P950 mega-zoom gains 4K video, Raw support, improved EVF

The Nikon Coolpix P950 has arrived, retaining the outrageous 24-2000mm equiv. zoom range of its P900 predecessor, while adding modern refinements like 4K video and a higher-resolution EVF.

In addition to its large zoom range, the P950 offers UHD 4K video capture, 7 fps burst shooting and Wi-Fi + Bluetooth. Google details how it’s improved Portrait mode on the Pixel 4

Portrait modes that simulate the shallow depth of field of a large sensor camera and fast lens have been around on smartphones for a long time. The Pixel 2 was the first Google phone to offer the feature. With the Pixel 2 being a single-lens camera the dual-pixel autofocus system was used to estimate the parallax and thus depth. The Pixel 3 still relied on dual-pixels but the system was improved using machine learning.

The Pixel 4 is the first Google phone to use dual-pixel AF and dual-cameras combined for depth estimation.

The latest Google flagship, the Pixel 4, is the first phone in the Pixel line to feature a dual-cameras. This allows for even better depth estimation by leveraging both the dual-camera and dual-pixel auto-focus system. In addition Google has also improved the appearance of the bokeh, making it more closely match that of a large sensor DSLR or mirrorless camera.

With the dual-pixel autofocus distance between the two focus pixels is very small which makes it difficult to estimate depth further away from the camera. The Pixel 4’s dual-cameras are 13 mm apart, allowing for a larger parallax and making it easier to estimate the depth of objects at a distance.

…dual-pixels provide better depth information in the occluded regions between the arm and torso, while the large baseline dual cameras provide better depth information in the background and on the ground.

Google is also still using the information collected by the dual-pixels, though, as it helps refine depth estimation around the foreground subject. In addition machine learning is used to estimate depth from both and dual cameras. A neural network first processes data from the two separately into an intermediate representation. A final depth map is then computed in a second step.

In addition to the improved depth estimation spotlights in the background are now rendered with more contrast, making for more natural looking results. This is achieved by blurring the merged raw image produced by the HDR+ processing and applying tone mapping.

Twitter rolls out Live Photo support on iOS, improved JPEG compression

Twitter has updated its platform with two new useful features for photographers: iOS Live Photos support and better JPEG quality. Both changes are live now.

Live Photos are a type of image that can be captured using an iPhone or iPad; in addition to the image, Live Photos include the 1.5 seconds of action that happened before and after the photo was snapped. In order to make it possible to share these images, Twitter is first converting them into GIFs.

To share a Live Photo, iPhone users must launch the Twitter mobile app and select the image from their Camera Roll. Once the Live Photo is selected, the user can tap the new ‘GIF’ option located in the bottom left corner of the image. This will result in Twitter converting and sharing the Live Photo as a GIF.

Converting Live Photos into GIFs has been the primary method used to share the video versions of these images. Lack of direct support on many platforms has forced many iPhone users to turn to apps like Lively. Twitter’s new support merely removes this time-consuming manual conversion process, enabling iPhone users to rapidly share their Live Photos with followers.

In addition to the new direct Live Photos to GIF conversion feature, Twitter is also now publishing JPEGs with their original encoding, according to company engineer Nolan O’Brien.This eliminates the transcoding and compression that obliterates image quality when viewed in full size. O’Brien notes that the thumbnail version of JPEGs will still be transcoded to cut down on file size and that only the bitmap encoding is preserved, not the metadata. As well, the new encoding preservation is only live for images uploaded using Twitter for Web.

Twitter for Web has supported 4096 x 4096 image uploads since last year, according to O’Brien, who details some upload scenarios in which the platform will still encode images:

Peak Design updates its Everyday line with new and improved bags, slings and totes

Peak Design’s Everyday line of camera bags has received a V2 update that includes new materials and features, inspired directly from customer feedback and improvements in material design.

The list of the overhauled bags includes the Everyday Backpack (20L + 30L), Everyday Messenger (15L), Everyday Sling (5L is now 6L + 10L) and the Everyday Tote 15L. In addition to the redesigned originals, Peak Design has also added a number of new bags: Everyday Totepack (15L), Everyday Backpack Zip (15L + 20L) and the Everyday Sling (3L).

All of the bags feature more robust ‘UltraZips,’ improved fabrics that are 100% recycled and Bluesign approved (except for black), improved MagLatch connections and new cord hook external carry straps. The Everyday lineup is also receiving new colorways: Midnight Navy (navy blue) and Bone (tan).

Everyday Backpack

The Everyday Backpack is Peak Design’s most popular design. Although the V2 update isn’t dramatic, the small improvements that have been made do make for an overall improved experience as our hands-on attests to.

The Everyday Backpack V2 features a slightly refined shape that should help it stand upright on its own when filled with gear and has redesigned straps that should better contour your body. It also receives the new UltraZip design, improved MagLatch connections, new internal zippered pockets and the expansion straps found on most of the other V2 bags.

Everyday Backpack Zip:

The Everyday Backpack Zip is what would happen if you took Peak Design’s Travel Backpack, shrunk it, and added a number of features found in its Everyday line. It comes in 15L and 20L versions and features dual-access zips on either side of the bag for easy gear access. It also has a dedicated top-zip for laptop and tablet access as well as side and top grab handles.

Everyday Messenger

Similar to the Everyday Backpack, the Everyday Messenger features an almost identical design as its first-generation design but improves upon a number of key features. In addition to the new 100% recycled 400D weather-resistant fabric, the Everyday Messenger features an improved MagLatch design, the new UltraZips and a few small aesthetic changes throughout the bag’s design to clean up the seams found throughout.

Everyday Sling

The Everyday Sling lineup has a number of changes from its V1 iterations. First, the 5L sling has been redesigned to add an extra liter of internal storage, now making it a 6L bag. The 3L and 6L bags can convert to was it packs, while the 10L bag offers a luggage carry pass-through for times when you don’t want it wrapped around your shoulder in the airport.

Everyday Tote

Much like the Everyday Messenger, the Everyday Tote isn’t much of a change from the previous version. Aside from a cleaner external design, the more robust UltraZips, the 100% recycled fabric and the external cinch straps the Everyday Tote remains largely unchanged.

Everyday Totepack

The Everyday Totepack is more or less an Everyday Tote that’s been made a little larger (20L instead of 15L) and adds a set of straps so it can be worn as a backpack.

The Everyday Totepack features dual zip access points on either side of the bag as well as internal FlexFold dividers and stretchy pockets for organizing your gear as you see fit. It features the 100% recycled 400D weatherproof shell and also has two storable carry cinch straps for those times when you need a little more gear.

The new Loupedeck Creative Tool editing console packs improved software integrations

Loupedeck has introduced Loupedeck Creative Tool (CT), the latest product in its line of editing consoles for creatives. The Loupedeck CT is small and nearly square at 160 x 150 x 30mm (6.3 x 5.9 x 1.2in) with a weight of 365g (12.9oz). The new model joins the previously released Loupedeck and Loupedeck+ consoles, offering a design that can ‘work in sync with all editing tools and software.’

The Loupedeck CT is a plug-and-play console with native integrations for a variety of popular software, including Final Cut Pro X, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Lightroom Classic. This model also introduces Loupedeck console support for Adobe Illustrator and music production software Ableton Live; later on this year, there will also be support for Autodesk Fusion 360.

The ‘fully adaptable’ Loupedeck CT is made with a high-quality aluminum cover and dials, plus it features LED backlighting, touchscreens, and what Loupedeck says are machine-quality ball bearings. The console packs preset workspaces designed for each software product integration, as well, though users retain the ability to customize the workspaces to meet their own needs.

Loupedeck designed its latest console with portability in mind; joining its small size is a removable USB cable. In addition to its software integrations and various buttons, dials, and touchscreens, the Loupedeck CT features Bluetooth 5 LE connectivity and support for macOS 10.12 or later and Windows 10. DxO PhotoLab 3 brings improved repair tools, local adjustment masks and new camera support

DxO has launched DxO PhotoLab 3, the latest version of the company’s photo editing software. The new version of PhotoLab brings new and improved tools, including an optimized Repair Tool and entirely new Local Adjustments Masks Manager, as well as support for keyword searches in PhotoLibrary and new camera support.

PhotoLab 3 introduces a new color adjustment mode as part of the software’s Hue, Saturation, and Luminance (HSL) Tool, one that is based on the DxO ColorWheel. With the tool, users are able to choose color ranges from eight separate channels, according to the company, as well as replacement colors and more.

Joining the ColorWheel is the new Local Adjustments Masks Manager, which enables users to manage an image’s layered local correction masks. This control includes individually adjusting opacity, reversing selected masks, and more.

Beyond that, PhotoLab’s Repair Tool, which allows users to scrub specific elements from an image, has also been ‘optimized’ to include a new Clone Mode and support for manually repositioning the tool’s source area. Both Repair Tool modes include support for opacity adjustment and feathering.

As mentioned, the software’s PhotoLibrary has also been updated to include keyword searches and management. The PhotoLibrary now shows image keywords in the interface, plus there’s the ability to add, rename, and delete keywords, including for multiple images at once. At this time, support for keywords in multi-criteria searches is only available on the macOS version of the software, but DxO says it will bring the same functionality to the Windows version soon.

A more complete workflow through keywords

Tether Tools Air Direct is a new and improved way to wirelessly connect your camera to your computer, mobile device

Tether Tools has introduced a new device that enables users to create a wireless connection between their camera and theirfavoritee tethering software, and which avoids the use of hot folders and middleman applications for camera controls.

The new Air Direct allows a much wider range of camera models and brands to be used than the company’s current Air Case, and enables tethering software applications to operate as if the camera were connected with a cable.

The idea is that those using software applications such as Capture One Pro can use the software’s tethering functions as normal, with the system sending live previews to the software and the software controlling the camera’s operation. While the Tether Tools Air Case was a Nikon/Canon-only device, the new Air Direct will work with Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony cameras as well — so long as they are compatible with the software in use. Canon and Nikon owners will also be able to tether via smartphones and tablets using the existing Air Remote App.

The new device uses twin antennas to send and receive data to and from the camera via 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11AC Wi-Fi networks, which Tether Tools claims, along with a USB-C cable, allows a transfer connection 5x faster than before. Air Direct has a range of 200ft/60m and can send both Raw and JPEG files to PC and Mac computers simultaneously. Battery or DC powered, the Air Direct doesn’t drain camera power and can be run using an external battery pack via the USB-C connection.

Google Pixel 4 adds telephoto lens, improved portrait mode and HDR in live view

Google officially unveiled the Pixel 4 today, with the addition of a telephoto camera headlining the camera updates. Other improvements include an enhanced live view experience showing the approximated effects of HDR in real time, added controls for adjusting exposure and tone mapping prior to image capture, and an updated portrait mode with better depth mapping thanks to the additional rear camera.

The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL offer 5.7″ and 6.3″ OLED displays respectively, each with a 90Hz variable refresh rate that Google calls ‘Smooth Display.’ Gone is the fingerprint sensor on the rear of the device, replaced by face unlock. Also new is a technology called Soli, comprising a radar chip that detects hand motions. Called Motion Sense, this feature makes it possible to skip songs and silence calls with a wave of your hand.

As is the case with high-profile phone launches, along with the main specifications the camera updates are also the center of attention (in fact, Annie Leibovitz made an appearance). In addition to the new F2.4, optically stabilized telephoto camera (about 48mm equiv.), Google has introduced improved Super Resolution Zoom for up to 8x digital zoom. In fact, the telephoto camera uses a hybrid of optical and digital zoom at its default zoom setting to achieve approximately 2x zoom.

The process of taking photos has been improved on the Pixel 4 as well. On previous models, the results of Google’s impressive HDR rendering could only be seen after capture – now, machine learning is used to approximate the effect in real-time for a much more ‘what you see is what you get’ experience.

Additional exposure controls are also available during image capture. Two new sliders give users direct control of overall scene brightness and rendering of shadows, as compared to the single exposure slider offered by the Pixel 3. Google also says the Pixel 4’s camera is more responsive and stable compared to the Pixel 3, thanks to 6GB of RAM at its disposal.

Portrait mode should see significant improvements as well. The mode now uses information from the telephoto camera as well as split pixels to judge subject distance, creating a better depth map than was previously possible only using split pixels. Portrait mode’s range has also been extended, making it possible to capture large objects as well as human subjects from farther back than was possible on the Pixel 3.

While the telephoto camera lends depth information, the standard camera with a 1.5x digital zoom is used for the image itself. Background blur is now applied to the Raw image before tone mapping, with the aim of creating more SLR-like bokeh. The updated Portrait mode should also handle human hair and dog fur better, and Google says that its face detection has been improved and should handle backlit subjects better.

All camera modes will benefit from improved, learning-based white balance – previously used only in Night Sight

An astrophotography mode is added to Night Sight, using longer shutter speeds to capture night skies. Additionally, all camera modes will benefit from improved, learning-based white balance – previously used only in Night Sight. Google has also done some white balance tuning for certain light sources.

Google has reduced the number of front-facing cameras from two back down to one. Citing the popularity of the ultra-wide selfie camera, the Pixel 4’s single front-facing camera offers a focal length that’s a happy medium between the standard and ultra-wide options on the Pixel 3.

Google Pixel 4 pre-orders start today; Pixel 4 starts at $ 799 and Pixel 4 XL starts at $ 899. Both will ship on October 24th. It will be available for all major US carriers for the first time, including AT&T.

Leaked Pixel 4 photos show new and improved astrophotography, portrait and Night Sight modes

The Google Pixel 4 is just around the corner, expected to be announced at the Made by Google Event on October 15. We’ve already seen what the Pixel 4 will look like, thanks to both Google and third-party leakers, but today we’re getting more than a hardware leak. 9to5Google has obtained exclusive images that it claims Google will use to promote the new camera capabilities of its impending device.

9to5Google has kindly given us permission to share the full-resolution images directly from their source and only saved once with a watermark over them. The images, as you’ll see below, are a combination of images captured with the front-facing selfie camera and the rear-facing cameras (rumors point to there being a 12-megapixel main camera and a 16-megapixel telephoto camera). The images appear to include photos shot in multiple camera modes, including the improved Night Sight mode and a new star-shooting mode that’s been rumored for some time now.

First up are a few photos that appear to show off the portrait mode of the front-facing camera onboard the Pixel 4. Interestingly, these photos measure in at 4.5-megapixels, nearly half the resolution of the 8-megapixel onboard the Pixel 3, so we’re not sure whether these are simply resized or from a larger sensor that’s been supersampled, but whatever the case is, they look impressive. The faked bokeh looks both realistic and smooth, while the outline, even around hair, seems to be precise, with only a few notable exceptions (specifically the arm on the white jacket).

Next up are more portrait mode shots with what we presume to be the rear-facing camera on the Pixel 4. These shots measure in at 7-megapixels and were taken with the main camera (the Pixel 4 will feature multiple camera modules). Like the previous shots, the fake bokeh appears to be incredibly accurate, even on difficult subjects, such as a long-haired pet and flyaway hairs.

Moving along, we have three photos (two 9.2-megapixels and one 5.2-megapixels) that appear to be taken with Google’s Night Sight mode. Based on the EXIF data embedded in some of the images, the photos were taken with the main 27mm (35mm equivalent) F1.7 camera onboard the Pixel 4. The actual lighting scenario in the scene isn’t known, but the images appear both bright and vibrant with nice dynamic range, even in the images that have multiple light sources at different color temperatures.

Along the lines of Night Sight, it appears a pair of photos showing off the much-rumored night sky camera mode expected to be onboard the Pixel 4. Based on the EXIF data, these images (the header image of this article and the below image) were also captured with the main camera unit and the GPS data reveals the shots were captured at Pinnacles National Park in Central California along State Route 146. For being captured with a smartphone, the amount of detail captured in the night sky is absolutely incredible. It seems as though stars get lost around the silhouette of the trees in the frames, but the rest of the sky showcases countless stars in the Milky Way.

The remainder of the photos showcase a number of scenes, but it’s not clear what specific camera modes are being used to capture these images. As noted by 9to5Google, it’s been rumored there will be a ‘Motion Mode’ with the Pixel 4, but that’s not yet confirmed, even though a few action-style shots are seen in the following images.

Plenty still remains to be seen, but with the Made by Google Event less than two weeks away, it won’t be long before we know just what the Pixel 4 is capable of. 9to5Google has also detailed a new ‘Dual Exposure’ mode that’s believed to be avaialble on the Pixel 4.
