Video: Three types of photographers, illustrated by the ‘The Grand Tour’ trio

28 Feb

During an episode in season three of The Grand Tour, hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May take a moment to sit down and discuss the photography equipment they plan to bring to photograph wildlife in Columbia.

The exchange from the trio is right on course with what you’d expect from Jeremy, Richard and James, if you know them from their Top Gear days; the guys poke fun at three different kinds of photographers and the gear they bring along for photoshoots in a way only they can.

Richard opts for the full suite of Canon prime lenses and camera bodies, complete with strobes, filters, a ThinkTank photo belt and BlackRapid camera strap to carry it all. Jeremy, on the other hand, keeps it simple with what appears to be a Canon 5DS R attached to an EF 600mm f/4L IS II. James eschews the weight and debate by further streamlining his gear with a single Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II.

All in all, the two-minute segment makes for a few good laughs.

Streets Illustrated: Colorful Interventions Make the City More Fun

24 Jan

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

Filling the city with art by literally painting right onto the streets makes it feel like everyone is immersed in an illustration, acting out some kind of larger-than-life story. Formerly bare patches of asphalt and concrete get splashes of color, patterns and imagery that can be humorous, fun or politically pointed. Roadsworth is among the street artists best known for this style, and recently debuted a new piece referencing the refugee crisis.

“A new record: as of today, the UN has counted 65 million refugees in the world,” he says. “I painted this in recognition of this tragic fact. Walls and Fences are for painting and climbing not for dividing and obstructing.”

In this particular mural, painted onto a street in Montréal, passersby are confronted with massive hands cling to a chain-link fence, effectively forcing them to recognize and think about the subject matter.

Other Roadsworth murals are more playful, like a stop-animation squirrel that appears to run down the street when the images are stacked in a GIF, and a crosswalk that has been turned into a rope bridge. A giant pink ice cream cone melts onto the pavement.

Fill in the Blanks: Illustrated Sky Spaces Between Buildings

29 Apr

sky art

Street art uses roads, sidewalks, walls and infrastructure as canvasses, but one of the brightest and blankest slates of all may be the spaces in between.

sky scape cloud canvass

Thomas Lamadieu, a French artist, looks up and sees subject, not void, in blue and clouded city skies, then uses his imagination to fill in the picture, playing on notions of figure and ground.

sky art infill drawings

His Sky Art series shows a given and take between shapes being worked with and what he puts in, often working with minimalist lines and splashes of color.

In the process, he turns tapering alleys into uncomfortable figures, sinuous spaces into leaning ladies, and cramped courtyards into crouching pranksters, all the while challenging us to see back and forth between positive and negative space (and selectively breaking the boundaries in between).

Superstitions, Illustrated: A Calendar of Fallacious Thought

21 Nov

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Even in a world of smart phones, high-speed trains, artificial intelligence and Mars exploration, many of us still bow to old superstitions. We avoid crossing under ladders, knock on wood, cross our fingers and worry about ‘jinxing’ things by speaking them aloud. Illustrator Fortuna Todisco features twelve of these superstitions in ‘Unfortunately013‘, a simple, modern calendar.

‘Fortune: Or other people’s bad luck,” reads the quote for March, beside an image of a rabbit with a peg leg. December proclaims, “Santa Claus doesn’t exist.”

The calendar was inspired by the common superstition that the ending of the ancient Mayan calendar, which is coming up in just a few short weeks, predicts the end of the world.

Todisco says, “UNFORTUNATELY013 is a reflection, through images, about the anachronistic persistence of superstitions in the present society.”

Newton’s Laws of Motion illustrated with 3D animations and motion graphics

28 Apr

A fun little video project I did illustrating Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion. The music is original as are the 3D animations and motion graphics. Let me know what you think about it. Does it effectively illustrate the concepts? I’d like to do more of these types of videos.
