Audi Ad Fakery: These Hyperrealistic Photos Were Made with a $40 Scale Model

These photos may seem to depict a $ 160,000 luxury automobile zooming through sand, snow, sea foam and salt flats, but the objects on your screen are smaller than they appear. The lack of a person sitting in the driver’s seat is not an indication that the car is self-driving: it’s because the car itself stands only a few inches tall. This version of it, anyway. Photographer Felix Hernandez bought a $ 40 scale model of the Audi R8 sports car on the internet and created the sets in his studio, with astonishingly realistic results.

The automaker commissioned Hernandez to create the series as a promotion for the high-end car. As behind-the-scenes photo of his studio setup reveal, most of the work is done with miniatures and special effects rendered mostly in ordinary edible household products. Careful lighting, staging and camera angles make the models appear full-sized, so minimal Photoshopping is needed for the final effect.

“I love photo manipulation and digital art, but what’s really cool is doing as much as you can in-camera,” says Hernandez in a piece he wrote for PetaPixel. “For snow scenes, I use wheat flour. For desert scenes, I use corn flour. For atmosphere, I add smoke. For rain, I spray water. For droplets, I add corn syrup. In some photos, I add images into my background. I also use Photoshop for adding effects that are difficult or impossible to do in-camera – things like adding a sense of motion, color grading, etc.”

Previous photosets have included a series in which the artist took photos of a young boy and a miniature boat and blended them together in Photoshop, as well as Stormtrooper figurines hand-painted to make them appear more rugged and worn. See them all on Behance.

Urban Fairytales: Hyperrealistic Paintings of Kids Exploring the City

Modern-day children move through a decidedly un-fairytale-like world with unlikely gangs of friendly wild animals to protect them in this series of paintings so realistic, it takes a moment to realize they’re not photographs. Artist Kevin Peterson creates these incredible scenes in oil paint on panel, highlighting the inner strength it can take to survive in places beset with violence and poverty.

Princesses regally make their way through rubble in abandoned industrial districts with crowned polar bears at their heels, point the way for the fierce lions acting as their champions and saunter down sidewalks with raccoons and foxes. The contrast of wild creatures and worn, neglected urban environments is a startlingly effective one most often utilized for post-apocalyptic scenes, but the addition of the little girls suggests a hope of human resilience.

“My work is about the varied journeys we take through life,” says Peterson in his artist statement. “It’s about growing up and living in a world that is broken. These paintings are about trauma, fear and loneliness and the strength that it takes to survive and thrive. They each contain the contrast of the untainted, young and innocent against a backdrop of a worn, ragged, and defiled world. Support versus restraint, bondage versus freedom, and tension versus slack are all themes that I often visit.”

A look through Peterson’s history of work reveals an interesting progression from fairly straightforward (albeit stunningly realistic) portraits of women and little girls in urban environments to these fairytale scenes. Some of these paintings are also going large-scale as public murals. Check out details and stay on top of Peterson’s current work on Instagram.

Chalk it Up to Illusion: Hyperrealistic 3D Sidewalk Murals

01 Sep

[ By Steph in Drawing & Digital. ]

3d street art 11Polar bears, orcas, lions and puppies stick their heads out of holes in the pavement so convincingly, you feel like you could actually pet them. What was once no more than a dull expanse of concrete or asphalt becomes the setting for a vivid scene that appears to jump right out of the ground when viewed from a certain angle. Originally working in chalk, Russian-born artist Nikolaj Arndt now uses a blend of pigments, water and sugar to keep his drawings from blowing away in the wind as he works.

After spending one summer attending sidewalk art festivals in his new home of Germany purely as a spectator, Arndt returned to try his hand at the craft, blowing passersby away with each 3D illusion. In an interview with pxleyes, the artist explains that some works might only last a couple days before they’re scrubbed away, while authorities in other cities actually attempt to preserve the sidewalk drawings as long as possible using varnish.

Arndt occasionally uses oil paints on canvas cut into custom shapes to produce a trompe l’oeil effect indoors, as well. “For me, the main thing in art is to give positive emotions to the audience. When people are smiling looking at my pictures, I’m happy.”

Give Your Eyeteeth: Surreal Hyper-Realistic Lip Makeup

27 Feb

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Eye Teeth Makeup 1

The word ‘eyeteeth’ has taken on a new meaning with a set of surreal and disconcerting images from Swedish makeup artist Sandra Holmbom. While most of Holmbom’s looks are much more conventional, the artist occasionally creates dramatic effects that incite a double-take. The image of an eyeball parting to reveal a set of teeth seems like something from a nightmare.

“Pretty, it’s not, but I had fun anyway,” Holmbom says of the look.

The makeup artist has also created gory effects like exposed musculature and wounds, as well as more humorous looks, like the character ‘Timon’ from the animated Disney movie ‘The Lion King.’ See more at her blog.
