24 Uber Sharp Images with Huge Depth of Field to Focus Your Attention

Over the last few weeks on dPS we’ve had some collections of images that demonstrate some of the basic photography principals. Last week it was using a large aperture for shallow depth of field. This time we’re going the other way and looking for images with a lot of depth of field, ones that utilize small apertures like f/16 or even smaller.

These are usually images with a lot of depth and focus from near to far. Landscape photographers use this technique often as do, surprisingly, macro shooters. When you get up close the depth of field is really slim so you need that added focus from the smaller apertures (if not using focus stacking techniques).

As a neat side effect if you include a light source like direct sunlight – smaller apertures will turn those into starbursts – a telltale sign you know a small aperture was used.

So here are some images that exemplify maximum sharpness and large depth of field:

Civic Camouflage: Hiding a Huge Urban Stadium in Plain Sight

Sports stadiums can be contentious, particularly when located in the heart of a city, but this design works in various ways to reduce disruptions to urban fabric, slotting seamlessly into its surrounding context.

Designed by international architecture and engineering firm Arup, the AC Milan 48,000-seat soccer club stadium in Italy is wrapped in commercial (shops, bars, hotels and restaurants) programmatic elements that work with but also independently of sporting events. Additional public-purpose elements include rooftop decks, micro-parks and playground for children.

Reinforced with soundproofing and a plan to sink its base into the ground, adding these architectural buffers on all sides helps reduce noise pollution for blocks on all sides as well as providing street-level continuity for those walking and driving through the city. Mark Wilson compares it to a combination of historical fortifications and suburban shopping centers: “around the stadium’s heart, architects will build a castle-like perimeter of restaurants, a hotel, and a sports college. From the street, the stadium just looks like a block-wide mall.”

The stadium itself features a spectator-optimized design intended to provide the best view possible for all visitors as well as a removable roof to allow for play in various conditions.

There are many structures that arguably should stand out from their surroundings – civic buildings like city halls, for instance – but sports stadiums rarely look good in and of themselves, and far too frequently interrupt what is going on in the cities around them. Typically, “even the most beautifully designed stadiums are an eyesore. They’re sprawling moles protruding from the skin of an urban environment, distended to accommodate a wide footprint of seats low to the ground.”

That’s No Moon: Artists Launch Huge Human Head Balloon

A bizarre art installation based on a dream saw a 50-ft tall balloon become a bizarre “Man In The Moon” as it rose above the streets of Utsunomiya, Japan.

Residents of Utsunomiya, a smallish city roughly 60 miles (100 km) north of Tokyo, Japan, experienced the shock of their lives on the evening of December 13th, 2014 when they espied the full moon rising over the horizon.

No doubt dozens of necks suddenly snapped in a group double-take as residents suddenly realized that’s no moon… it’s the enormous inflated head of one of their neighbors!

Give credit to Japanese art trio Me (in collaboration with the Utsunomiya Museum of Art) for the uniquely unusual “Ojisora” project, an artistic effort spanning over two years from conception to realization. Its origin rests with one of the three artists, Haruka Kojin (above, right), who as a junior high school student dreamed of an old man’s grossly enlarged and disembodied head floating over town and country .

Upon awakening from her dream, Kojin quickly sketched her recollection and then just as quickly forgot about it. Many years later, she came across her sketch and wondered… was there some way to recreate her dream in real life? After consulting with her two co-artists and with the support of the Utsunomiya Museum of Art, Kojin took the first step towards realizing – and sharing on a mass scale – her odd dream from so many years before.

Making Faces: Huge Military Warehouse Mural Spans 48 Windows

Covering two sides of a three-story building in Rome, this ground-to-roof artwork is massive, even by the standards of a big-thinking street artist like BLU used to large-scale works.

Various window and door openings are incorporated into colorful characters with a” rainbow range of painted personalities,” some of which play off of the existing architectural details or structural quirks of the building.

BLU lives in Bologna and has been active in the street art scene since 1999 – he is well-known for his large-scale works around the world. Like Banksy, he keeps his identity a closely-guarded secret.

About the artist: “His graphic mania is directly proportional to the epic scale of his murals. His paintings seem to interpret the architectural language of public spaces and reinvent them into new shapes. Thus, his murals are never detached from the places where they were conceived because Blu is a painter in the landscape, urban or industrial. He always tries to communicate with the society which inhabits those spaces, searching for the uniqueness of each place.”

Rounded Market Hall: Huge Digital Mural Wraps 118,000 Sq Ft

A massive mixed use project in Rotterdam by MVRDV, this newly-opened building wraps vertically around an open central space but also features one of the largest works of art in the Netherlands: an incredible digital display spanning over 100,000 square feet of the interior surface area.

The closed-but-open solution is a response to new Dutch legislation requiring produce markets to be enclosed, balanced with a desire to keep an open-air feeling to the space. The resulting design with its vibrantly-colored displays makes the place seem inviting from the outside, drawing people in to visit the nearly 100 shopping stalls within. The complex is expected to have over 5 million annual visitors.

Glazed on two sides with transparent glass, apartments wraps the others sides and top of the structure, giving over 200 residents views down into the market below as well as balconies toward the outside world on the exterior skin of the structure. The suspended glass panels are held in tension by thin wires, making the supports as invisible as possible while providing protection against strong winter winds.

From the firm’s press release: “The large mural which covers the vaulted interior, ‘Cornucopia’ by artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam has a total surface of 11.000 m² and shows oversized images of market produce which can be bought at the market, as well as flowers and insects referencing the work of Dutch still life masters from the 17th century. In order to achieve the required sharpness, the image was rendered by Pixar software. It was printed onto perforated aluminium panels, then attached to acoustic panels for noise control. The print resolution of the art work is comparable to a glossy magazine.”

More about the layout: “Markthal comprises 96 fresh food stalls and shop units, ranging from Rotterdam based businesses and market vendors to established local heroes. They will offer a diverse range of products: from fresh fish to game, from cappuccino to cheese, from Chinese to Dutch, from ice cream to local produce, from bargains to exclusive slow food. The ground and first floor accommodate 20 retail units, restaurants and cafés. All shops are food-related and include a crockery- and a wine shop. A supermarket is located on the 1st underground level allowing the shoppers to complete their shopping under one roof.”

City-Sized Artwork: Huge Building Mural Spans 99 Structures

In his most ambitious and large-scale work to date, Felice Varini has created a perspectival piece that wraps around the entire historic core of Hasselt, Belgium, and can only be fully seen from above.

The work spans all sorts of downtown buildings, from the local cathedral to restaurants, stores and private residences, covering pieces of walls, roofs, sidewalks, and streets, all striped with white and playing a small part in the massive overall composition.

The point of Trois Ellipses Ouvertes en Désordre is, in part, to create a public puzzle, causing people to wonder at the seemingly random components they see from any given perspective. The entire piece is only visible from the top of one local hotel, the Radisson Blu.

To create the piece, light was projected on the buildings below at night. A team of painters then drew outlines around the resulting shadows and filled them in over the course of weeks using cranes to finish the work.

Varini is well versed in the art of view-specific installation pieces, some placed throughout interior spaces and others seen in open city streets.

11 Tiny Houses With Huge Style

Tiny houses are growing in popularity because of increasing environmental consciousness and a desire to reject unnecessary material goods. Transitioning from paper books and files to digital copies is a boon to those who want to make their life leaner, and is helping minimalist housing flourish.

The Tumbleweed Tiny House Company is at the forefront of designers in the field, pumping out an amazing variety of tiny house designs. The house featured above is their Epu plan, a straightforward house design that is incredibly mobile and can comfortably house two people in a space that is 8 x 15 feet.

This house is built primarily out of two shipping containers and can house up to 4 occupants. It’s not as small as many of the examples featured, but in terms of environmental impact, and in relation to the average home, it’s quite a step up.

The Enesti is a tiny house plan that lays out a small, but permanent structure. At pricing around $ 60,000 for nearly 900 square feet, it is significantly less expensive than the typical home.

The top home is totally mobile and designed by Maximus Extreme Living Solutions to stand up to the toughest elements. This North Carolinian build was created during a tiny house workshop and has beautiful modern lines. This gypsy style buggy is the perfect place for two people to crash after a long day on the road. The final design is unusual, in that it actually opens up in the middle to give much more space to the occupants. In foul weather, it’s a simple fix to seal it up tight.

These houses show the versatility of tiny house designs. With such little space to work with, creativity is a must, and builders are able to use the low cost to add deluxe features that would be prohibitively expensive in a full sized house. For example, a house shaped like a castle turret would cost a fortune, but that’s not the case when it’s this tiny. An entire house can fit in the backyard, as the perfect place for guests to spend the night. A curved house design gives the bottom right house a unique look, while the final house mixes modern elegance with cozy cabin stylings.

Rescue during Huge Waves at the Wedge 7/25/09

Waves a day after the death of a swimmer at the Wedge in Newport Beach Ca. Here people were being rescued and dropping on on amazing waves at the Wedge. ABC eye witness news on the beach to capture interviews of the rescued swimmers and surfers.

Surf ‘n Siege: Huge Abandoned Island Fortress in Florida

70 nautical miles off the coast of Key West in Florida is a series of seven islands set among a graveyard of over 200 ships, crowned with a massive 19th century fortress that lay abandoned for nearly a century. The Dry Tortugas once hosted Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon and an influx of marauding pirates; today it’s a bird and wildlife sanctuary and a national park.

In 1513, Ponce de Leon became the first European to discover the island, naming it ‘Tortugas’ for the many green, hawksbill, leatherback and loggerhead turtles he found there. He and many pirates after him relied on the turtles for meat and eggs. Between the 1600s and the 1800s, hundreds of ships wrecked on the surrounding reefs and shoals, and word ‘Dry’ was added to the islands’ name on maps to warn mariners of the lack of fresh water.

Construction began on the 45-foot-high, hexagonal Fort Jefferson on Garden Key in the late 1840s when U.S. Army strategists became concerned about the security of shipping lanes in the Gulf of Mexico, and it was still unfinished 30 years later. It was briefly used as a prison for Union deserters in the Civil War, but was besieged in later decades by yellow fever, hurricane damage and the fact that its cannons had become obsolete. It was permanently abandoned in 1907.

Fort Jefferson and the rest of the 64,700-acre Dry Tortugas were officially established as a national park in 1992. Fort Jefferson remains the largest all-masonry fort in the United States. While restoration efforts have helped preserve it, the forces of nature and time continue to take their toll. The islands can be accessed by a three-hour boat ride from Key West, or a 45-minute plane ride.
