This iconic still life photo was shot at f/240… for 6 hours!

20 Aug

Editor’s Note: The video contains a fine art nude print that is spoken about starting at 7:50 and appears in the background throughout most of the video from that point on. Potentially NSFW.

What’s the smallest aperture you’ve ever used? F22? Maybe the max you’ll find on some large format lenses: F64? When iconic photographer Edward Weston needed more depth of field to capture his famous still life Pepper No. 30, F64 wasn’t nearly enough. He shot it at F240, using only natural light and exposing the shot for 4-6 hours!

This curious piece of photo trivia came up during the latest episode of Marc Silber’s show Advancing Your Photography, in which he visits Weston’s house and speaks to Weston’s grandson Kim about the legendary photographer’s work and technique.

Edward Weston’s famous ‘Pepper #30’ was shot at f/240, with an exposure time of between 4 and 6 hours using all natural light. Photo: Edward Weson, screenshot from video.

Silber and the younger Weston touch on several of the renowned photographer’s best known photographs, and finish the episode with a teaser from inside Weston’s darkroom. To hear about these techniques in more detail and see more of Weston’s work and home, click play up top.

iPhone 7 Plus survives 13 hours in icy Russian river

28 Jan

A video posted by Fedor (@emfedor1983) on

Apple’s iPhone 7 isn’t officially classified as a waterproof. With its IP67 rating it is capable of surviving immersion at a depth of one meter (3.3 feet) for 30 minutes but this is meant to protect against accidental drops into water or splashes rather than make the phone suitable for underwater activities.

However, an incident during an ice fishing trip in Russia has now demonstrated that the device offers more environmental protection than its IP rating would suggest. According to Russian language publication ykt.ru a fisherman dropped his iPhone 7 Plus into an ice fishing hole in the city of Yakutsk. Unable to retrieve the device, it was left in the water overnight, until the next day a diver friend of the phone’s owner was, after three attempts, able to find the device and bring it back to the surface.

When taken out of the water, the iPhone powered on successfully and did not show any signs of malfunction after 13 hours in the freezing 4°C/39°F water. According to its owner the iPhone 7 Plus had approximately 35 percent battery charge when dropped and still showed 19% after the successful retrieval, which is documented in the Instagram video above. It’s great to know the iPhone is likely to survive even longer periods of time submerged in water, but we’d still recommend dedicated underwater equipment for your next diving or snorkeling video.

Modular Record: 3D-Printed Chinese Villa Assembled in 3 Hours

29 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

3d printed home fast

In this latest attempt at one-upmanship in the realm of rapid construction, a company in China has built a two-story villa from six modules, putting the 3D-printed pieces together on site with conventional equipment in under three hours.

3d printed villa design

In a country already boasting the world’s first 3D-printed apartment complex and 10 3D-printed houses assembled in a single day from scrap materials, this latest contender is located in the historical city of Xi’an. A product of the ZhuoDa group, the building boasts robust earthquake-proof construction and impressive affordability thanks in part to cost savings associated with the methods employed (around $ 40-50 per square foot). 90% of the construction is completed off-site, the components then shipped by truck to their destination.

3d printed home interior

Part of the strength of the structure is tied to its modular construction – each of the 6 constituent architectural subunits is structurally independent, able to survive stress and shifts relative to the whole.

3d printed house assembly

The core material used in the 3D-printing process has been kept secret, but the company has indicated this new custom composite is sourced from industrial and agricultural waste, is fireproof and waterproof, and is free from harmful substances such as formaldehyde, ammonia, and radon.

3d home rapid build

On the day of the build, the living room was put together, then the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, all on the first floor. Next, the terrace, bedroom and utility rooms on the second floor were assembled. The result is a rapid construction process that reduces air and noise pollution for neighbors.

3d printed speed house

A prefabrication time of just 10 days for the core modules also compares favorably with typical on-site construction times ranging up to 6 months for a structure of comparable size, quality and durability (the estimated lifespan of the structures is 150 years). Variable finished looks will allow homebuyers to customize their individual houses, selecting mixtures for surfaces that simulate the textures and appearance of exotic and expensive materials including jade, wood, granite or marble.

Salt-Powered Lamp: 8 Hours of Light from 1 Glass of Saltwater

27 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

salt energy lamp design

Aiming to bring low-cost illumination to residents of the Philippines, a nation of 7,000 oceanic islands, the Salt Lamp uses a free and abundant resource to reduce fire risk from candles and replace the cost of traditional lighting.

salt water lamp

Developed by engineer Lipa Aisa Mijena of De La Salle University, the Salt Lamp requires a single glass of water with two tablespoons of salt to provide a night’s worth of a light, but, best of all, it can run off the naturally salty water of the surrounding ocean.

salt powered charger device

The electrode can run for over a year without requiring replacement as well. The next-generation version of the Salt Lamp will also have the capacity to charge portable electronic devices like cellular phones.

salt powered light

Currently, many households in the country lack access to or funds for electricity, resorting instead to oil lamps (which can cause house fires) or battery-powered lights (which cost more to use). Worse, during times of critical need (the area being prone to natural disasters) the resources required to make light are all the more essential yet difficult to acquire.

salt lamp design

As someone who has both spent time with locals around the country and a member of Greenpeace Philippines, Mijena developed the Salt Light as an eco-friendly, low-footprint alternative that could be sold commercially but, first and foremost, deployed via non-profit organizations to those in need. “There are no materials and components inside the lamp that may cause fire accidents. One less thing to worry about for families that rely on kerosene lamps as their main source of lighting. This lamp uses the science behind the Galvanic cell, the basis for battery-making, changing the electrolytes to a non-toxic, saline solution — making the entire process safe and harmless.”
