Photographers Unite educational conference hosts 60 top photographers from around the world

The Image Salon, a Montreal-based photography and post-production service, recently produced a global educational conference called Photographers Unite that hosted 60 photographers from around the world. The live event is over, but photographers who missed it the first time around can register and watch the full replay until June 6.

Photographers Unite was a free event that asked attendees to make a charitable donation, though it wasn’t and still isn’t required to view the conference. Each speaker donated their time to participate in the conference, lending their expertise over the duration of 20 minutes, as well as an additional five minutes spent answering questions from the audience.

The live event took place on May 26 and May 27 from 11am to 7pm EST. The replay is available on the Photographers Unite website starting today, May 29, and will remain available until June 6. Interested viewers must register for access, which simply requires a name and email address, as well as the viewer’s photography specialty.

The conference had speakers who specialized in a wide variety of photography, including Two Mann Studios, 37 Frames, Sam Hurd, Susan Stripling, Lindsey Adler, Brandon Wong, Sara Monika, Tyler Wirken, Jide Alakija, Chris Knight and others. A schedule of the speakers with timestamps for each of their sessions is available on the Photographers Unite website. The Image Salon has also published examples of each speaker’s photography on its Instagram account.

Access to the replay is delivered in the form of a link and password that is sent to the email address provided during registration. The educational opportunity is unique in that it is completely free and includes some of the top photographers in the field. Donations from viewers go to Global Giving’s Coronavirus Global Relief Fund, as well as select regional charitable funds.

Picnic at the Border: Artist JR Hosts Bi-National Meal at a Giant Table

At one small point on the United States-Mexico border, where two towns named Tecate are separated by a fence, residents of both countries sat down to the same picnic at a gigantic table printed with ‘The Eyes of the Dreamer.’ This new event, held on October 8th, comes just weeks after the artist rolled out a massive 65-foot-tall photographic installation of a toddler peering over the fence from the Mexico side.

“GIANT PICNIC at the border today in Tecate … people eating the same food, sharing the same water, enjoying the same music (half of the band on each side) around the eye of a dreamer … we forgot the wall for a minute …” says JR in a Facebook post.

Picnic-goers sat down to the same meal at one big table for the single-day installation, which was apparently pulled off with the help of a sympathetic border guard. A band played, with some of its members sitting on the U.S. side and others on the Mexico side.

JR is well known for these black-and-white photographic installations, which are put up all over the world, often without official permission. The subjects of his portraits are usually everyday people who live in the area. The TED Prize winner says he aims to use art to “turn the world inside out.”

Prison Reformed: Amsterdam Structure Now Hosts Refugee Center & Art Hub

A structure that once housed thousands of prisoners now hosts up to 1,000 refugees as well as a creative hub, offering space “in a time of fear and division.” Amsterdam’s Bijlmerbajes first opened in 1978 and closed in 2016, and the complex, which consists of six towers, went up for sale shortly thereafter. It’s set to be demolished later this year – but until then, it’ll function as a temporary home for those seeking asylum in addition to art studios, offices for entrepreneurs and other projects.

The new ‘Lola Lik’ cultural hub opened on January 20th in the former main building of the prison, neighbor to the refugee center known as Wenckebachweg. The complex’s courtyard has been transformed into gardens, and will host Solar World Cinema, a project bringing free films to open-air public spaces.

Lola Lik also hosts The Favela Painting Foundation, which “invigorates public urban spaces by turning them into inspiring and colorful artworks of monumental size.” The group, which is responsible for large-scale art projects in Haiti, Philadelphia and Rio de Janeiro, also helped give the drab concrete prison buildings a cheerful makeover.

The space aims to be an incubator for inspiring projects and businesses operated by both the refugees who live next door and residents who have lived in Amsterdam a bit longer. The space is open to the public, and its studio spaces can be rented. The prison’s former kitchens have been transformed into a ‘Start-Up Kitchen’ run by Jay Asad, a Syrian entrepreneur who formerly owned several restaurants, a hotel and specialty donut shops in Damascus.

Racing Pigeons: Garbage City Hosts World’s Oddest Pastime

In the trash-ridden outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, precariously lofted structures rise up on stilts, home to birds that, come sunset, are set loose as the strange race begins to reroute and capture the free-flying flocks of one’s neighbors. The goal: to use flags and whistles to navigate your own birds and bring them back to their roost, all while hopefully entrapping your neighbors’ pets in the process.

Photographer Manuel Alvarez Diestro (via CityLab) flew in from London to document this bizarre phenomenon. Dating as far back as 4,000 years ago in various forms, this sport-like activity involves breeding, raising, releasing and recapturing huge collections of pigeons.

Garbage City, the informal name of the trash-collecting suburbs surrounding Cairo, plays host to many of participants, its lack of building code regular contributing to the unsteady-looking structures used to house the birds.

Not made to support heavy loads, many of these informal roosts are cobbled together from scraps and assembled like scaffolding from wood and whatever else is available.

PigeonNews gives a great deal of detail on everything from the types and ratings to behaviors of the birds and their masters, including stories of training, endurance and skill as well as sickness, predators and other mishaps.

Notably, pigeon is also eaten in the region, so while many treat it as a hobby or sport, some participants may also have other incentives for breeding (or catching) these birds.

There are as many as 2,000,000 people actively raising these birds in Egypt today, with some people spending hundreds of dollars a month on the upkeep of hundreds of birds.

Boneyard Studios: Vacant Lot Hosts New Micro-Home Village

In a bold bid to change urban landscapes, a series of tiny home builders and enthusiasts has come together to turn empty space into a microcosmic example of what small-space living can mean for dense and high-cost cities like Washington D.C.

Starting with a small, awkward and triangular alley lot the Boneyard Studios group proceeded to clear the debris build a series of four small homes. “The lot originally had overgrown grass, broken concrete, pooling water, garbage, illegal parking, and occasional criminal activity (e.g. a dumped stolen vehicle).”

Brian’s Minim House is clean, refined and modern featuring minimalist details, wood siding with black metal trim and a metal roof with solar panels. It also has interior features like in-seat storage and a pull-down screen for a space-saving projector television and video player.

Elaine’s Tumbleweed Lusby is framed and filled with warm wood, feeling as much like a cabin in the woods as it does a cottage in the city. It comes complete with a bamboo ladder leading up to a cozy lofted sleeping space.

Sony hosts workshops with the World Photography Awards in London

As part of its partnership with the World Photography Awards, Sony is hosting a series of workshops at London’s Somerset House. The sessions take place from April 26th – 28th and cover a range of interests from beginner topics to those looking to make a career out of photography. Individual sessions are are priced at £5 each. Speakers include commercial photographers Michael Wayne, Magdi Fernandes, What Digital Camera’s Editor, Nigel Atherton and Technical Editor of Amateur Photographer, Richard Sibley.
