Hipster offended after mistaking himself for hipster in study about lookalike hipsters

09 Mar

Gideon Lichfield, editor-in-Chief of MIT Technology Review, recounted a hilarious story of mistaken identity on Twitter this week. According to Lichfield, the publication received an angry email from a man who accused the site of using his portrait without permission to illustrate an article about hipsters who all look the same. The problem? This unnamed complainant wasn’t the man in the image.

The issue began when MIT Technology Review published an article detailing a study called The Hipster Effect: When Anti-Conformists All Look The Same. The article includes a properly licensed header image depicting a prototypical hipster sourced from Getty Images, but the angry email writer didn’t know that, instead believing it was an image of himself.

The publication’s Creative Director Eric Mongeon contacted Getty Images to verify the photo’s model release, and that’s when the mystery was solved:

Lichfield’s amusing Twitter story seemingly underscored the study’s premise, but sadly it didn’t include an image of the email writer for comparison.

Marco Bohr investigates ‘hipster photography’

20 Oct

hipster4.jpg

What is ‘hipster photography’? Photographer Marco Bohr has written a blog post in which he attempts to define ‘a new genre of photography which is apparently produced, promoted and disseminated by trend conscious people who are in contemporary visual culture referred to as hipsters’. In his post, Bohr argues there is a distinction between a photograph of hipsters and a photograph by hipsters. He aims to deconstruct these images, and see beyond the thick black-framed glasses, quirky haircuts, and geeky watches. Click through for more details.

Stoned Hipsters: Ancient Greeks in Modern Hipster Attire

parisian hipster greek statues

We’ve all seen hipsters in the wild, and even if we can’t perfectly define what a hipster is, we know one when we see one. Parisian artist Léo Caillard does too, and he wondered what this modern trend would look like if it were transported back in time…back to when ancient Greeks paid homage to the perfect human form by immortalizing it in stone.

Caillard got the idea while walking through the Louvre and looking at the masterful statues. He wondered what a juxtaposition of modern fashion and ancient art would look like together. And because a question like that simply can’t go unanswered, he set out to make that unlikely combination happen.

Hipster Starter Kit: Complete with Ironic Mustache & More

06 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

No shutter shades or scarf in this set, just a basic collection of essentials to get you started on the road to a life of independent fashion,  aspiring artistry and political posturing.

A well-worn plaid shirt will compliment your new rounded, thick-rimmed, faux-vintage glasses. Take to the streets and share your mix tape of obscure bands, and don’t forget to shoot some Polaroids while you are at it.

Not sure what to do next? An owner’s manual is included. And what about the mustache? You probably don’t have to be male to pull it off, assuming you wear it with a sufficiently ironic affect. A great Christmas gift too – or maybe if you are feeling fashionably secular you could give it at New Year’s. Sure to be a hit this holiday season, regardless.

Stake your subcultural claim alongside beat, hippie, punk and grunge demographics with your style-defining assortment of goodies by graphic designer Mihael Mikloši. Thrift-store-worthy, organic-looking labels and hand-written fonts for things like the mix tape seal the deal.
