This is one of our most complex animations to date. With a total runtime of over 8 minutes across three modules, the program incorporated over 50 separate models, from the molecular (Angiotensin I, BNP, Endothelin), to the microscopic (red blood cells, platelets, endothelial cells), to whole organs (heart, lungs, kidney, liver, vascular system) and even a whole body. Creating, managing, and animating all of these digital assets into a coherent program with a strong narrative using a team of 4 modelers and animators working concurrently – was a challenge. Our client also had a specific tradeshow in mind to premiere the final movie, which was only 12 weeks from project initiation and gave us a fixed deadline. We managed to bring the whole program in on time and on budget – an innovative achievement.

www.nucleusinc.com This 3D medical animation demonstrates techniques used in bariatric surgery (weight reduction surgery) for obesity, including stomach staple. Bariatric surgery is performed if weight loss efforts through lifestyle changes and medications have been unsuccessful and your body mass index, or BMI, is above 40 or above 35 and you have life-threatenign condition, such as heart disease of diabetes. There are two types of bariatric surgeries; restrictive and malabsorptive. Gastric bypass or Roux-en-Y is both a restrictive and malabsortive procedure, while banding techniques are restrictive procedures and biopacreatic diversion procedure is a malabsorptive procedure. The Tell-Tale Heart is a wonderful animated short film of 1953 based on Edgar Allan Poe short-story. The story told by a mad man has a dark visual with a perfect work of narration by James Mason. It is a UPA Production and was the first cartoon to be X-rated (adults only) in Great Britain under the British Board of Film Censors classification system. Really great – you have to see it.

www.nucleusinc.com This 3D medical animation of the heart shows a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure used to combat coronary artery disease. Beginning with a midline sternal incision, the heart is connected to a perfusion machine which will take over the duties of the heart while the surgery takes place. Two different grafts are used to bypass the blocked coronary arteries the internal thoracic artery from inside the chest wall, and the saphenous vein from the leg. After the procedure, the heart is shocked to restart its beating. A drainage tube is left at the incision site to drain away excess fluid. The animation continues to show two other types of approaches to a coronary artery bypass graft, off-pump bypass surgery and minimally invasive bypass surgery. This is similar to the procedure performed on former president Bill Clinton and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

www.nucleusinc.com This 3D heart animation shows a coronary angiography (cardiac catheterization) procedure. It begins by showing the buildup of plaque in an artery wall of the heart, slowing the flow of blood and shows the heart valves pumping. Afterwards, the patient lies on a testing table while contrast dye is injected into the arteries of the heart, showing the location of the blockage. ANCE00182

www.nucleusinc.com Cataract Eye Surgery. This 3D medical animation depicts the phacoemulsification and extracapsular removal of a cataract (cloudy lens), and the placement of an artificial lens. The lens of the eye is responsible for focusing images onto the back of the eye. It is normally transparent. As a normal part of aging, the lens begins to cloud and causes a gradual, painless loss in vision. Cataract removal is most often performed to better examine the back of the eye when monitoring for damage from certain diseases such as diabetes or glaucoma and to improve vision. There are two main types of cataract removal. The large majority of cataract surgeries are performed using the phacoemulsification technique. During the phacoemulsification technique an ultrasound probe breaks the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The fragments are vacuumed out through a tiny incision. An intraocular lens implant is then inserted to replace the natural lens that was removed. Because the incision is tiny, stitches are often not necessary and visual improvement is usually noted relatively soon after surgery. During the extracapsular technique the cataract is removed as one entire piece. This requires a larger incision and stitches. An intraocular lens implant (artificial lens) is inserted to replace the natural lens that was removed. Recovery is usually slower, due to the larger incision. The stitches sometimes need to be removed, which is usually done in the office. After both …
www.nucleusinc.com This 3d medical animation shows a heart attack resulting from atherosclerosis, which is inflammation of an artery. It was designed to be an immersive experience to hold the viewer’s interest in this complex, slow-developing process. Every shot was conceptualized as a visual effect to evoke the sensation of a journey within a dynamic and diverse environment. Beginning with the probable cause, which is damage to the endothelial wall, the story progresses in detail through the stages of atherosclerosis concluding with the resulting damage to the heart.
