As 2020 draws to a close, we’d like to wish you all a fantastic holiday season and a joy-filled end to the year.

2020 hasn’t been easy, and it hasn’t been the year that any of us hoped for. But the light at the end of the tunnel is nearer than ever.

Here at Digital Photography School, we’d like to thank you – for being part of the dPS community, for supporting us through these difficult times, and for pursuing the marvelous adventure that is photography. We’re certainly excited to keep offering photography content in 2021, and we have some big things in store for you (so make sure to be on the lookout!).

Shutterstock announces new earnings structure and contributors are anything but happy

Stock photography company Shutterstock is taking heat after announcing in a post on its contributor forum that it’s putting a new earnings structure in place starting June 1, 2020.

Under the new structure, photographers and videographers will get compensated via a percentage of the sales price based on the ‘level’ their photo and/or video are rated, with the level being determined by the number of times their content is licensed. Previously, there were lifetime earnings tiers, which took into account total sales made during the lifetime of the contributor, but Shutterstock will do away with that and instead reset all contributors to ‘level 1’ for both images and videos every year on January 1.

Shutterstock breaks down what the various levels consist of in the two graphics below — one for photos and one for video, each of which are calculated independently of one another:

This effectively means that no matter how many sales a contributor has made, on January 1 each year, said contributor will always be demoted back to ‘Tier 1’ wherein they only receive a 15% commission on sales.

Shutterstock says it’s ‘making this adjustment in order to reflect changes in the market for creative content, help to create fair opportunities for all our contributors, and reward performance with greater earnings potential.’ But contributors aren’t convinced and are voicing their concerns and frustrations in the announcement forum post; especially members who have been long-time contributors with massive lifetime earnings numbers, as they will be most affected by this change.

Shutterstock member Richard Whitcombe, who’s been a member since 2010 and has posted more than 3,200 pieces of content, replied to the announcement post saying, ‘Just when you think Shutterstock couldn’t completely and utterly screw the contributors more you’ve gone and done it.’ He continues, ‘Effectively with a January reset everybody gets a cut of 20% or more of earnings to a new laughably tiny amount and it’ll take months to claw back the level they’ve been earning previously. So most people are going to go most of the year for half or less than they currently get.’

He shared in a later post that a Shutterstock team member sent him a private message suggesting they will be moderating his posts for his feedback. The private message read:

‘Hi Richard,

I know you have a lot of questions and you’re fighting for clarity. But you are refuting and questioning everything I post today, and not very constructively.

I’m going to start hiding your posts.

Thanks,

[Shutterstock team member]’

Other members have also chimed in on the changes, echoing Whitcombe’s concern and disbelief about the new earnings structure. As of publishing this article, there are 66 pages of replies to the original forum post, few of which are positive.

Wow! 2019 is almost over! Where has the year gone?

We’d like to wish you a big Merry Christmas from the dPS Team!

In the land “down under,” Australia, where many of the dPS team is based, it’s Christmas day already. So, we are likely already celebrating and basking (or melting) in the Australian heat.

Wherever you are based, thank you for being a regular reader and fan of dPS. Thanks for helping us to continue to provide quality photography education for you and other photography enthusiasts. It’s what we love to do, and we are glad that it helps you to learn and expand your photography skillset.

However you decide to celebrate this holiday season, we hope you make the most of it and thoroughly enjoy your Christmas and Holiday Season.

Instagram rolls out ‘Recommended Posts’ feature, and users aren’t happy

Instagram is testing and rolling out features at a quick pace. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Facebook-owned photo sharing app started letting users follow Hashtags in addition to Profiles. And now, after testing the feature with a limited number of accounts, Instagram has confirmed to TechCrunch that “Recommended Posts” are being rolled out to everybody’s feed as I type this.

According to TechCrunch, the feature adds a “More Posts You Might Like” section to the bottom of your feed. But even though this feature isn’t meant to replace posts by people you follow, the response from users who have had the new feature thrust upon them is… expected. Many took to Twitter to voice their displeasure at this latest ‘indignity’ perpetrated on their feeds:

And there are plenty more where these Tweets came from. Still, just like the infamous switch from chronological order to algorithm, chances are good Instagram won’t bow to the pressure or even give users an option to disable the new feature. To paraphrase Bob Dylan: the feeds, they are a’ changin.

A happy ending: Police recover stolen limited edition Leica from The Camera Store robbery

You could look at the story of the recent robbery at beloved Calgary camera shop The Camera Store as a play in three acts. Act 1: the store is robbed of over $ 27,000 USD worth of high-end camera equipment. Act 2: Local and worldwide media attention helps police nab two suspects and recover most of the gear in just 48 hours.

And now, Act 3: The final piece of stolen equipment—a rare, limited edition Leica M-P Edition Safari—is returned to the shop, making this particular theft a complete failure.

Act 3 took place just before Christmas, when the Calgary police executed a search warrant—ostensibly at the home of one of the two suspects arrested previously, 60-year-old Tan Xuan Hung Bui and 36-year-old Justin Ross—where they found the stolen Leica M-P Edition Safari worth $ 13,000 CAD (~$ 10,250 USD).

The Camera Store announced the recovery on its blog at the same time as the news broke in The Calgary Herald. And, as promised, the tipster who alerted the police to the sketchy online gear sale that led to the two suspects’ arrest will receive a $ 5,000 CAD (~$ 3,800 USD) shopping spree at The Camera Store as a token of thanks.

According to The Calgary Sun, the ‘winner’ is “a gentleman from Edmonton.”

But this happy story is not without its one gray cloud. That rare Leica M-P, a collectors item, was scuffed somewhere between its theft from and return to The Camera Store. Then again, given the amount of attention this particular story has gotten, maybe that’ll make the camera even MORE valuable.
