GoPro’s updated Plus subscription will now replace two broken cameras per year

01 Feb

GoPro has announced an expansion to its Plus subscription service, now offering subscribers “no questions asked” camera replacements in the event their own camera breaks. The new benefit started on January 31st, and is available to both existing and new Plus customers. The camera replacement offer is in addition to Plus’s other various perks, including mobile backups and priority customer support.

For now, GoPro’s $ 5/month “enhanced” Plus plan is only available to US customers, though expansions into other markets are expected to start later on in 2018. The camera replacement perk is available for customers who have a Hero5 or newer, though it is not a free replacement. GoPro charges the following “exchange fees” for the four replaceable GoPro camera products:

  • HERO5 Session: $ 39
  • HERO5 Black: $ 59
  • HERO6 Black: $ 79
  • Fusion: $ 139

Per GoPro’s FAQ, Plus customers must return their old camera to get the replacement—which is done using a return shipping label the company provides—so the replacement program doesn’t cover cameras that are lost. Additionally, subscribers are limited to two camera replacements per 12 billing cycles, though the exchanges can happen any time during those 12 months.

In addition to device replacement, Plus subscribers will soon also have access to mobile cloud backups for photos and videos—unlimited image backup and up to 35 hours of video backup. Apple customers get the backup feature first via its February 20th iOS availability, while Android users will get the same backup benefit on an unspecified date this Spring.

Finally, GoPro Plus includes front-of-the-line customer support priority status and a 20% discount on accessories on the GoPro.com website.

A free 30-day trial is available now for new customers. To learn more, visit the GoPro website.

GoPro’s 5.2K 360-degree Fusion camera officially launched, costs $700

01 Oct

The GoPro Hero6 was the big news to come out of GoPro’s launch event yesterday, but it’s not the only thing the company revealed. CEO Nick Woodman also officially launched the previously-announced and still somewhat-mysterious GoPro Fusion—the company’s 360° 5.2K action camera.

The GoPro Fusion was first teased at CES in 2016 and revealed in April of this year, but other than its ability to shoot 5.2K spherical video at 30fps, we really didn’t know much about it. Official release date was set for “Fall” and people mostly forgot about it… until yesterday, that is. We found out a lot more about Fusion the launch event.

In addition to that video spec, the Fusion uses its two lenses to shoot 18MP spherical photos, captures 360° sound, is waterproof to 16feet (5 meters) without any external case, and features ‘gimbal-like stabilization’ that is achieved using the built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. Additional features include time lapse video and photo modes, night lapse and burst modes, voice control in 10 languages, and built-in GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Here are a few video breakdowns of the different features built into the camera, like that gimbal-like stabilization and something called ‘OverCapture’:

The GoPro Fusion is already up for pre-order on the GoPro website. It will cost you $ 700 and GoPro plans to ship the Fusion later this month. Click here to find out more or pre-order yours now.

GoPro’s poor holiday sales lead to staff layoff

17 Jan

In its preliminary Q4 financial report this week, GoPro revealed it expects the last quarter’s revenue to be about $ 435 million, a figure significantly lower than the $ 512 million analysts had estimated. Due to poor sales over the holidays, GoPro states it will layoff 7% of its workforce as part of a restructuring effort.

The company announced its fourth quarter financial estimates on Wednesday, saying the quarter’s ‘revenue reflects lower than anticipated sales… due to slower than expected sell through at retailers.’ The company’s workforce had increased more than 50% annually over the last two years, eventually growing to 1500+ workers. With revenue down, GoPro will restructure its workforce to focus on ‘key growth initiatives,’ letting about 105 workers go in the process.

The company’s final Q4 financial numbers will be reported on February 3.

GoPro Announces Q4 and Calendar Year 2015 Preliminary Results

16% Annual Revenue Growth to $ 1.6 Billion for 2015

SAN MATEO, Calif., Jan. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRO) today reported certain preliminary financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2015.

GoPro expects revenue to be approximately $ 435 million for the fourth quarter of 2015 and $ 1.6 billion for the calendar year. Fourth quarter revenue reflects lower than anticipated sales of its capture devices due to slower than expected sell through at retailers, particularly in the first half of the quarter. Fourth quarter revenue includes a $ 21 million reduction for price protection related charges resulting from the HERO4 Session repricing in December. Non-GAAP gross margin for the fourth quarter of 2015, excluding the impact of price protection and a charge of between $ 30 million and $ 35 million to cost of revenue for excess purchase order commitments, excess inventory, and obsolete tooling is anticipated to be between 44.5% and 45.5%. Non-GAAP gross margin for the fourth quarter of 2015 is anticipated to be between 34.5% and 35.5%. Non-GAAP operating expenses for the fourth quarter of 2015 are estimated to be between $ 150.0 million and $ 152.5 million.  Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities at December 31, 2015 totaled approximately $ 475 million.

These preliminary, unaudited results are based on management’s initial review of operations for the quarter and year ended December 31, 2015 and remain subject to the completion of the Company’s customary annual closing and review procedures. Final adjustments and other material developments may arise between the date of this press release and the dates GoPro announces fourth quarter 2015 results and the filing of the Company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K with the SEC.
