BYOD – Sundance Docs Pt.3 – Big Boys Gone Bananas, Searching for Sugar Man, and Chasing Ice

09 Jan

EPISODE SYNOPSIS: Vlad and Ondi’s Sundance festival adventure continues with interviews with some of the most celebrated artists from this year’s festival. First we speak with Swedish director Fredrik Gertten, whose film “Big Boys Gone Bananas” was sued by Dole fruit for defamation. The difficulties of being a muckraker are clearly illuminated by Fredrick and his friend, Morgan Spurlock, who drops by for an impromptu endorsement. Then we talk with Malik Bendjelloul, the director of the highly anticipated “Searching for Sugar Man.” Malik shares his infectious enthusiasm with us and clearly regards the project as a labor of love that has managed to re-expose one of the great (nearly)over-looked musicians of the last 40 years, Rodriguez. John Cooper, the festival’s director, managed to swing by and talk with Ondi and Vlad for a bit of insight on the process of orchestrating and navigating the festival, and even shared some of his own personal favorites from this year’s crop. Finally, “Chasing Ice” film makers Jeff Orlowski and James Balog open up to BYOD about the intense undertaking that went into creating the year’s most talked about climate film. Far from being a lecture-type piece, “Chasing Ice” is a work that is as beautiful as it is informative. GUEST BIOS: Fredrik Gertten has been making a distinctive name for himself as a journalist and film maker. Having been involved in “The Corporation,” and now “Big Boys Gone Bananas,” he’s solidified his position as a muck raker

Girls Gone Wild

18 Dec

For her graduation present, George’s daughter McKenzie hits the sun and fun of South Beach, Miami along with Tammy’s daughters, Lindsey and Megan, and Lauri’s daughter, Ashley. Money woes put a damper on the Knickerbocker girls’ good time and a trip to a famous tattoo parlor gets McKenzie in hot water with dad George. Vicki invites Jeana, Colton, Tammy and Frankie to spend the weekend with her and Donn at their Lake Havasu vacation home. The alcohol flows like the river on which they party, but tensions between Vicki and Donn threaten to ruin the trip. Things turn dangerous when Colton takes a shocking death defying jump. Laurie furthers her wedding plans by choosing a photographer and wedding invitations, while newly single Kara contemplates an offer from mother Jeana to take part in a mother/daughter pictorial for Playboy magazine. Tamra throws a big birthday bash for son, Spencer, who just turned seven. The party atmosphere can’t tame the tension between her oldest son, Ryan, and her husband, Simon. Later at a family dinner, jobless Ryan bickers with step dad Simon, putting Tamra in the middle again.

22 Imaginative Flyby Concept Aircraft From Days Gone By

16 Nov

[ By Marc in Technology & Vintage & Retro. ]

At some point the science of flight became a reality. At the time, it seemed like such a futuristic shift, however, that imaginations continued to soar forward into the future, thinking about what was to come. With this vision of future flight came some wild concepts for gigantic blimps, personal aircraft, and everything in between.

(Images via iheartchaos, gajitz, dvice, youngester)

The current shape of aircraft are based on scientific principles that generate enough thrust to create lift, while still serving as an efficient means to transport cargo. This doesn’t mean this is the only way to get in the air. Tohoku University researchers are reaching into the past – they think biplanes may be the best shape for supersonic flight. Synergy aircraft are an attempt to make flight achievable by all; including families. A radical lightweight design may just be the ticket to making this a reality. Lockheed’s Cormorant is a plane concept in which the craft spends much of its time underwater, bringing stealth to a new dimension. The final image is a great example of our currents visions of the future of aircraft, which very well may look as ridiculous and outlandish as some retro futuristic examples look to us now.

(Images via airliners, crackajack, finalgear)

This experimental craft is showing its years, from when it was designed to push the limits of technology. Captain Rickenbacker’s airplane of the future was designed in 1929 and clearly never left paper, which is probably for the best. With propellers being the end all and be all of aviation, it made sense to just keep adding more. The Ekranoplan is a seaplane designed to lift off close to the surface of the water. It has a radical design and was actually used in the Russian navy for some years before being discontinued.

The future of aviation takes many forms. Take the Sky Tug for example, a futuristic blimp model that was designed for the Navy and will be entering active service, mainly for use in carrying cargo across difficult terrain, on behalf of commercial interests. The name of the crazy looking plane is Claire, and its design is an effort to create a sustainable aircraft for future air travel. Another current concept was commissioned by NASA and also hopes to accurately reflect the shape of new planes. This blue airship is able to use the helium in its stores to land and lift off effortlessly, at least, that’s the idea. Whether this plan comes to fruition is anyone’s guess.

(Images via internetdebris, psipunk, listsoplenty)

Even after seeing visions of the future of flight that are crazy by today’s standards, it’s still easy to laugh at attempts of futurism in the past. Judging by old magazines, we should all be in flying cars by now. Designer Leong Huang Zi came up with this design for the Aerial Rescue Chopper that actually looks like something that could work (though it would be mighty expensive). Lastly, a vision from the past of an actually working flying car called the ConvAir Car, that was meant to bring the power of flight home. Unfortunately, the idea never got off the ground.

(Images via electriccabinet, aviastar, io9)

Personal transport for the military and police officers have always been of interest to forward-thinkers, but it’s as yet unattainable on an inexpensive and effective basis. The De Lackner DH-4 “Aerocycle” was a prototype meant to revolutionize combat transportation, but it was deemed too impractical. Oddly enough, the final image depicts a vision of the future deemed quite practical (in the future).

(Images via warrenellis, plan59, darkroastedblend, darkroastedblend, scifilists)

This vintage craft was envisioned by Matsujir? Murakami, while the much more intimidating craft is a 1946 vision created by artist George Shepherd. The large gray ship is more watercraft than airplane, but it holds the same slick design as many of the other visions. Some craft were designed to fly, and land on water, while others were meant to “soar across the seas.” A gigantic ekranoplan, meant to be a mix between water and aircraft, is a Russian concept from 1965. Lastly, a plane that can lift off and land vertically. For obvious reasons, this is not the best way to tackle this problem…

Gone to Seed: 9 Green Plant-Sprouting Product Designs

17 Oct

[ By Delana in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

Once a product’s primary function has been served, most of us choose to either throw away or recycle whatever is left. An increasing number of products, though, are meant to be reincarnated as beautiful, growing plants. When their first lives are over, these products can be placed into the ground to be reborn.

(images via: Democratech)

A group of MIT design students wondered what would happen if, instead of throwing away their pencil stubs, they could do something constructive with them. Thus the Sprout pencil was born – a pencil that can be used just like any other, but when it becomes too little to use it can be planted in a bit of soil. A small capsule on the end contains a seed that will sprout and grow, providing enjoyment far beyond the initial usefulness of the pencil itself.

(images via: Yanko Design)

The To Be Nature chopstick is a similar concept that contains a seed in a starch capsule at one end. When your meal is over, you can plant the chopstick in soil and water it to activate the seed. The new plant will use the stick as a support as it grows up tall and strong. As intriguing as the concept is, however, it seems like an odd design oversight to place the seed capsule on the end of the chopstick that comes into contact with food.

(images via: Lifebox)

A revolution in packaging, the Life Box turns a serious environmental offender – the cardboard box – into a positive for the environment. After it has carried its cargo to its destination, the box can be torn up and soaked to activate the many seeds embedded in the cardboard. Each Life Box contains enough tree seeds to grow an entire forest ecosystem, with all of the species contained in the boxes approved as non-invasive in the United States.

Nearly everyone gives out business cards, so it makes sense to make them memorable and relevant to your line of work. Designer Jamie Wieck came up with this brilliant idea for a sprouting business card. The card is actually an envelope containing alfalfa or watercress seeds. When moistened per the instructions it develops into a lush miniature garden that, as an added humorous touch, doubles as a head of green hair for the face printed on the front of the card.

(images via: BLDGBLOG)

Landscape architects Tur & Partner certainly got plenty of business by handing out these miniature landscape business cards. At first the image on the front looks like simple plans for an outdoor garden, but once you introduce water and sunlight the seeds embedded in the card’s paper begin to sprout, creating a surreal little garden right on the card’s surface.

(images via: Struck)

Advertising creative firm Struck took a slightly different tactic with their business card for lawn company Lush; this business card is actually a tiny envelope containing a handful of grass seeds. There is no need to destroy the business card to grow the grass, which is probably best for long-term exposure. The recipient is encouraged to spread the seeds and then contact the lawn care company in order to care for the brand new ground cover plants.

(images via: RecycledIdeas)

Etsy seller RecycledIdeas has come up with something new and brilliant in the arena of wedding favors: plantable skeleton keys that blossom into beautiful, colorful wildflowers. The keys act as novel decorations and weights for table markers during the reception. After the wedding is over, the seed-impregnated keys go home with guests and into the soil – with some sun and some water, the joy of the wedding day can go on long after the reception is over in the form of cheerful blooms.

(images via: Yanko Design)

Designer Joon Kim thinks that it’s really a shame to throw away disposable cups after the coffee that came in them is all gone. The Y in Cup concept would give the cup a new purpose once your latte has been drained. The bottom of the cup contains a small seed packet along with growing instructions. When you fill the cup with soil and plant the seeds inside, the cup becomes a desktop flower pot. The design would be much more effective if the cup were biodegradable so that it could be simply placed into the soil outside once the plant gets big enough, but as this is only a concept at this point and not an actual product, there is still time for improvements to the idea.

(images via: Bloomin)

Bloomin was a pioneer in the seed paper market, being the first company to introduce a commercial printable, biodegradable, seed-impregnated paper that will actually grow plants when placed into soil and cared for. Their product line includes everything from greeting cards and journals to calendars, coasters, wine glass tags and gift wrap – all with tiny seeds embedded in the paper, just waiting to grow into herbs, vegetables or flowers.

On Assignment: Gone in 86 Seconds

17 Oct

Two of my favorite admonitions from The Princess Bride are: "Never enter into a land war in southeast Asia," and, "Never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line."

To that I can now add, "Never try to schedule a bunch of CEOs for photo shoots in August."

Because that's exactly what I was doing this past August. Which, in turn, led to this portrait being done in a grand total of 86 seconds. Read more »
