We’re counting down our top 10 most popular sample galleries of 2017. At #7 we have the Olympus Tough TG-5. And here we thought the compact camera market was dead!

All joking aside, this is a lovely little camera. Read why we called it ‘best rugged compact you can buy right now.’ It features a 25-100mm equiv zoom lens and has a hermetically sealed body making it waterproof down to 15m/50ft, drop proof from 2.1m/7ft, crush proof up to 100kg/220lb and freezeproof to -10C/+14F.

And for more on the TG-5 here’s another full gallery we shot with it on a trip to the Washington Coast:

We’re counting down our top 10 most popular sample galleries of 2017. At the #8 spot we have the Nikon D7500, which launched in the spring of this year.

This enthusiast DSLR is very well suited for all forms of still photography – read how it won one of our editors over – thanks to excellent subject tracking, a fast burst rate, deep buffer, good image quality, and solid ergonomics. It sits right below the APS-C flagship Nikon D500 (read how the two stack up) and borrows a few key components from it and the Nikon D5.

We gave it a silver award in our review – it also scored a bit higher than its closest Canon competitor, the EOS 80D (read how the two compare). So take a peek around our gallery and see why we think this camera rocks.

Top 10 sample galleries of the year: #9 is the Fujifilm GFX 50S

We’re counting down our top 10 most popular sample galleries of 2017. Images in each of these galleries have been viewed more than 1 million times – and it’s no coincidence that the products featured are also some of our favorite pieces of gear released this year.

Sliding in at our #9 spot is the Fujifilm GFX 50S medium-format camera. We first got our paws on this digital beast while at the CP+ 2017 tradeshow in Japan (check out the other cool products we saw there). In fact, much of the above sample gallery was shot in the streets of both Yokohama and Tokyo, Japan. You can read all about that experience right here.

The GFX 50S is truly a fascinating camera – it represents Fujifilm’s entrance into the digital medium format market, while maintaining the ethos of APS-C X-series cameras. Find out why we gave it a gold award in our review.

Underground Art: 11 Subterranean Galleries & Installations Delve Deep

10 Aug

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

Often mysterious, somber and a little otherworldly, subterranean spaces add a sense of depth (no pun intended) to the art installations and performances held within them. Abandoned subway platforms, tunnels beneath old psychiatric hospitals, cisterns, ice wells, bunkers and even manholes invite us to descend beneath the surface of the earth to experience art on another level.

The Water at The Cisterns by Hiroshi Sambuichi

Damp and dreary yet monumental, with the proportions of a cathedral, this former underground water reservoir in Copenhagen was once an unknown beauty beneath the city, but now functions as ’The Cisterns,’ an unusual art venue. Japanese architect Hiroshi Sambuichi delicately transforms the space while paying respect to all of these qualities with ‘The Water,’ a subterranean landscape installation taking viewers on “a journey through an underground sea of light and darkness.” Natural light, moss and an icy glass cube play with the humidity and moisture levels of the space, making it feel a bit like a secret underground forest.

JFK Figurine Hidden in a Desert Bunker

You’re hiking through the unforgiving plains of the California desert when you come upon a mysterious black hatch. Against your better judgment, you open it and climb down the ladder into a huge metal pipe that appears to be part of some kind of bunker. Inside, what you find is more bizarre than pretty much anything you could have imagined: a statue of John F. Kennedy perched on a stool, casually crossing his legs. Artist Will Boone based his sculpture on a figure from a hobby kit, scaling it up to life-size. To him, the installation “speaks not just to all those things that have been driven underground since the extinguished optimism of the sixties but to those same fears – nuclear attack and the invasion of the other – that have been so vividly resurrected in recent times.”

Secret Sculptural Installations Beneath Paris

Artist Radouan Zeghidour descended into the many subterranean spaces beneath Paris to illegally install secret art installations, each one often requiring many hours of investigative preparation both to access the space, avoid getting caught and keep the art undisturbed for as long as possible, though he’s gone to jail once or twice. The installations themselves often feel like reverent tributes to the people who occupy liminal spaces in society, evoking camps where homeless people and refugees often live.

Repurposed Oil Tanks at the Tate Modern in London

Repurposed by the firm Herzog & de Meuron, the enormous underground oil tanks of a former power station now act as a dramatic backdrop for performances, interactive art and video installations at London’s Tate Modern. “No longer generating electricity, the Tanks generate ideas, creative energy and new possibilities for artists and audiences,” says the museum. “These raw, industrial, subterranean spaces, each measuring over thirty meters across and seven meters high are the world’s first museum galleries permanently dedicated to exhibiting live art, performance, installation and film.” [Middle photo by Ray Tung/Rex Features.]

D.C.’s Dupont Underground Arts Space

The 75,000-square-foot east platform of Washington D.C.’s subterranean trolley station Dupont Underground is now a visual art and performance space hosting revolving exhibitions as well as performances, permanent murals and other programming. Lying beneath the city’s Dupont Circle about a mile from the White House, this underground space was closed off in 1962 when the city’s streetcar system shut down, and remained empty until the new arts space opened in 2015. Among the installations it has hosted is ‘Whimsical Invasion’ by Hyuntek Yoon and Youngeun Kwun, consisting of over 650,000 plastic balls in nylon netting.

Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM galleries: Roller derby and daylight base ISO samples

14 Oct

Our friend James McDaniel recently put Sony’s premium stabilized telezoom to the test, first in low light shooting roller derby WFTDA Playoff action and later in daylight, shooting at base ISO. This lens features built-in image stabilization and uses a linear motor to acquire focus quickly and silently, which could be real benefits to all kinds of photographers. We’ll be adding to the base ISO gallery as soon as we catch a break from the rainy Seattle weather. Until then, enjoy the two galleries below:

Looking Beyond Land: 12 Floating Galleries, Schools & Cemeteries

22 Jun

[ By SA Rogers in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

Even without the threat of rising sea levels, we’ve got land scarcity issues in nearly every major city, prompting engineers and architects to look towards the rivers and seas as settings for floating structures that could support not just housing and restaurants but also farms, movie theaters, schools and even cemeteries.

Floating Movie Theater: Pavilion of Reflections

Assembled on Lake Zurich for the contemporary art biennial Manifesta 11, ‘Pavilion of Reflections’ is an open-air floating cinema with an integrated swimming pool that dips right into the lake. In the daytime, it functions as an urban island, while at night , the LED screen lights up and spectators take their seats to watch a series of documentaries.

Floating Hawker Center: Solar Orchid for Singapore

Singapore’s traditional hawker culture of food and retail street carts extends out onto the water with the Solar Orchid by SPARK Architects. The self-contained, solar-powered pods encourage interaction with the harbor while reinterpreting the nation’s traditional pastime. Each individual pod accommodates cooking stalls with built-in exhaust, water, electrical, gas, waste collection and water recycling services as well as places for diners to sit.

Floating Eternity Cemetery for Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a bit of a corpse burial problem, as they run out of land space even for their efficient hillside cemeteries and skyscraper vaults. Could a floating cemetery island that’s able to move from one port to the next throughout the region offer a solution? It’s certainly a novel idea. The Floating Eternity Cemetery by BREAD Studio leaves the land for the living with an exterior looping wall housing urns and central space for ceremonies. Families can come aboard at certain times of year to honor their dead, making it a special, shared experience, before the offshore cemetery moves along again.

Floating Swimming Pool: Baltic Sea Park

When you run out of land for parks, build them on the water. This way of thinking is spreading across the world, from New York City to Estonia, envisioned as the home of this ‘Baltic Sea Park’ by kilometrezero. The circular pavilion honors thousands of years of history and cultural exchange on the Baltic Sea, and connects buildings on land to a floating structures that acts as a dock for a changing series of floating pavilions. In the summer, the protected circle of water within it becomes a giant swimming pool.
