Nikon Coolpix P950 mega-zoom gains 4K video, Raw support, improved EVF

The Nikon Coolpix P950 has arrived, retaining the outrageous 24-2000mm equiv. zoom range of its P900 predecessor, while adding modern refinements like 4K video and a higher-resolution EVF.

In addition to its large zoom range, the P950 offers UHD 4K video capture, 7 fps burst shooting and Wi-Fi + Bluetooth. Raw image capture is a welcome addition for more advanced photographers, and anyone will be able to appreciate its higher-res 2.4M-dot viewfinder. The P950 boasts 5.5 stops of stabilization and an accessory shoe to support Nikon’s DF-M1 dot sight – a useful aid for bird and airplane photography.

The Nikon Coolpix P950 will arrive in February with an MSRP of $ 800.

Adobe Photoshop CC gains new MacBook Pro Touch Bar support

Adobe has announced that Photoshop CC now supports the Touch Bar found on certain models of the new Apple MacBook Pro. Three categories of Touch Bar functions are currently supported, including brush selection, customized favorite actions and layer properties. The update that brings this new support is available to download now. 

When using the Layer Properties section with the Touch Bar, Photoshop CC users can access various tools and options related to layers, including Select & Mask, switching between blend modes, placing a Smart Object, clipping layers and scrolling through the layer history. The Brushes section is similar, lending access to brush settings like opacity and flow, size, color, and hardness.

Finally, the Touch Bar also provides access to Favorites, of which users can create their own favorite actions. Says Adobe, users can gain quick access to, for example, Flip Horizontal/Vertical, Full screen mode and the macOS share menu. Additionally, users can set up actions involving the Brushes and Layer Properties categories.

Sony posts significant imaging division income gains in 2015 financial year-end report

There’s plenty of bad news going around the camera industry lately. Companies once flush with cash from compact camera sales are now struggling to keep sales even. But despite the downward trend on a lot of camera manufacturers’ books, Sony is coming through with some positive numbers. In its latest year-end financial report, the company boasts a 30.4 billion yen increase in operating income for its imaging products division, despite a 1.7% year-on-year decrease in sales.

It’s a familiar story – Sony attributes the gain in income to a more favorable mix of high-value products, no doubt including its full-frame mirrorless line and premium RX-series compacts. Cost-reduction measures are also cited as contributing to the income gains. And though the upward trend is no doubt good for Sony, those numbers aren’t quite as impressive as they seem at first glance. The imaging division’s 2014 figures were hit by significant restructuring charges, bringing down the bottom line by 7.3 billion yen by the end of the year.

Even taking into account last year’s mark-down, Sony has put up some very strong numbers for its imaging products in 2015’s financial year.

Phase One buys Mamiya, gains ownership of camera and lens production

Digital medium format brand Phase One has bought the whole of the Mamiya Digital Imaging Company and has taken over Mamiya’s Saku factory for its Japanese HQ. The Danish company has had a long-standing relationship with the Japanese camera and lens manufacturer, and since 2009 has owned 45% of the company’s shares. Phase One sold customised Mamiya bodies and redesigned lenses under its own brand name, with the 645DF+ being a very close relation to the Mamiya 645AFD III – cameras the two companies launched simultaneously in 2012. 

For Phase One the move will almost certainly be about acquiring a closer control over the manufacturing side of its business so the company can enjoy a freer reign over what happens in the factory. What Phase One has been able to do in terms of the bodies it offers has so far been dependent on what Mamiya could or was prepared to do, and with no products of its own Mamiya may not have been able to invest sufficiently to develop significantly different new cameras. 

The new president of Phase One Japan, Makoto Honda, hinted that optical design and lens upgrading would also be a major focus in comments in the press release: ‘Phase One Japan is committed to developing new and custom designed masterpiece leaf shutter optics in close partnership with top photographers, imaging companies and long term design partner Schneider Kreuznach.’ 

At the moment lenses branded ‘Phase One’ are made by Mamiya and require in-body focal plane shutters. All the compatible leaf-shutter lenses are made with help from Schneider in Germany. That may not change, of course, but the buyout gives Phase One more control of what can and can’t be done. What the deal will mean for the future products of the company we’ll have to wait and see. 

Mamiya was started by camera designer Seiichi Mamiya in 1940, and produced the wonderful Mamiya Six rangefinder series and then the equally fabulous Mamiyaflex TLRs in its first ten years. Having started in medium format the company went on to produce rangefinder and SLR cameras for 135 film, as well as slim pocket compacts for the miniature ‘spy’ 16mm format film. The modern 6×4.5cm format cameras were introduced in 1975, and it was these that went on to become the basis of the current Phase One digital bodies. Perhaps some of the best loved and revered models the company made were the RB and RZ 6x7cm studio cameras, which were big and heavy but lovely to use. 

The company struggled on its own in the digital market and its 2004 ZD integrated digital camera, and the ZD back for Mamiya film bodies didn’t achieve great success. Phase One bought a large stake in the company in 2009, and in 2012 formed the Mamiya Leaf medium format brand. 

The original company was also a producer of fishing rods and reels until 2000.

Sony a7 II gains faster focus for adapted lenses and uncompressed Raw

Sony’s a7 II will receive a firmware update that will boost its AF performance with adapted lenses as well as adding support for uncompressed Raw. The update adds a menu option that pushes the camera to either use phase detection (for speed) or contrast detection (for accuracy) when using non-native lenses. Read more

Leica T (Typ 701) gains updated firmware version 1.1

Leica has updated the firmware for its T (Typ 701) mirrorless camera to Version 1.1. In one of the stranger descriptions we’ve seen, Leica hasn’t given any specific details of what’s changed, saying instead that “you will get the complete scope of functions and performance as described in the manual of your camera”. Canon EOS 70D review gains test scene samples

We’re working towards completing our review of the Canon EOS 70D and have been shooting our test scene with a production camera. We’ve published the test shots, including downloadable Raw files of both the daylight and low light scene. Steady on! Casio Exilim EX-ZR800 18x zoom gains five-axis stabilization

Casio Europe has announced the Exilim EX-ZR800 – a Raw-shooting compact with five-axis image stabilization. The 16MP BSI-CMOS camera shares many features with the existing EX-ZR700, including the 18x, 25-400mm equivalent lens and ability to capture DNG files. The ZR800 gains the ability to shoot time-lapse sequences, along with a stabilization system that can be used for both stills and movies, on top of the usual multi-shot and high speed modes that Casio has developed over recent years.
