You’ll Never Want to Leave This All-in-One Bed Full of Gadgets & Storage

07 Sep

[ By SA Rogers in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Blow-up dolls and boyfriend-shaped body pillows may make you feel a little less lonely, but they can’t give you a massage – unlike this multifunctional bed that performs so many functions, you half-expect it to cook you breakfast in the morning. Sold by a variety of Asian retailers for roughly $ 600 USD, including SG Shop and English TaoBao, this slightly bonkers piece of furniture incorporates virtually everything you can imagine (reasonably) wanting to be built right into your bed, from USB chargers, speakers, power outlets and a pop-out laptop table to an actual built-in massage chair with multiple settings.

Lift up the mattress to find plenty of storage underneath for extra bedding and ubiquitous pillows. There’s also hidden storage in the bench at the foot of the bed, and shelves all along both sides. Optional features include leather upholstery instead of the default fabric, which comes in a multitude of colors, and even a freaking safe to hold your valuables.

If there’s one glaringly obvious feature this bed doesn’t have to offer, it’s a mattress long enough for the average American. The small size measures just 4’11” while the large size adds a foot. So if you’re larger of stature, this bed might not be for you – at least, not to sleep in. It would still make a pretty cool living room lounger. If you were designing your own all-in-one dream bed, what would you add? A mini fridge? A built-in coffee maker?

How to Be Invisible: 15 Anti-Surveillance Gadgets & Wearables

29 Nov

[ By SA Rogers in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

anti-surveillance-prosthetic-mask-2

We don’t have to wait for a dystopian future in which our faces are scanned as we walk down the sidewalk and our every movement is logged – we willingly carry personally identifiable tracking devices in our pockets everywhere we go, and cameras are everywhere. What’s the average law-abiding citizen concerned with privacy to do, let alone activists and protesters seeking to exercise their constitutional rights? These wearable counter-surveillance designs, including drone-evading cloaks, signal-blocking phone cases and fingerprint spoofers aim to provide us with privacy-preserving tools in the age of Big Brother.

Edward Snowden’s ‘Snitch’ iPhone Case & The Tunnel Case

anti-surveillance-phone-case-edward-snowden

anti-surveillance-phone-case

Designed by the infamous whistleblower Edward Snowden himself, who knows a thing or two about the NSA, this modified iPhone 6 case features a screen that monitors when an iPhone is transmitting, covers the rear camera and triggers alerts when the phone is transiting data via radio signals that can make a user detectable.

“If you have a phone in your pocket that’s turned on, a long-lived record of your movements has been created,” Snowden explained while presenting the case at MIT’s Media Lab via video connection from Russia. “As a result of the way the cell network functions your device is constantly shouting into the air by means of radio signals a unique identity that validates you to the phone company. And this unique identity is not only saved by that phone company, but it can also be observed as it travels over the air by independent, even more dangerous third parties.”

A lower tech option with similar albeit less robust features, called the Tunnel case, provides similar benefits and is available now, unlike Snowden’s concept. It’s a signal-jamming copper-lined sleeve that blocks all electromagnetic frequencies within ten seconds, making you untraceable.

URME Anti-Surveillance Prosthetic Mask

anti-surveillance-prosthetic-mask

anti-surveillance-prosthetic-mask-2

There’s no denying that this 3D-printed resin prosthetic mask is creepy looking – especially the way the wearer’s eyes tend not to line up correctly with the eye holes. But wearing another man’s face can help you slip past biometric scanners without revealing your true identity. Artist Leo Selvaggio has lent us all the use of his visage so facial detection software identifies the wearer as him. The mask is also available in a budget-friendly, printable paper version.

“Our world is becoming increasingly surveilled,” reads the URME website offering the mask. “For example, Chicago has over 25,000 cameras networked to a single facial recognition hub. We don’t believe you should be tracked just because you want to walk outside and you shouldn’t have to hide either. Instead, use one of our products to present an alternative identity when in public.”

Fingerprint-Spoofing Strips

anti-surveillance-fingerprint-spoofing

The IDENTITY kit by Mian Wei is a ‘fingerprint substitute’ you apply to the tips of your fingers like band-aids. Since fingerprints are biological identifiers that we can’t change, they can be used against us, and the rise of consumer devices requiring a fingerprint passcode can put this crucial piece of identity verification at risk. The black prosthetics are made of a mixture of conductive silicone and fibers so you can assign ‘false fingerprints’ to your iPhone and other devices, and so your ‘fingerprint’ can’t be molded and used as a key to your life.

Makeup That Thwarts Facial Detection

anti-surveillance-makeup-1

anti-surveillance-makeup-2

anti-surveillance-makeup-3

For now, facial detection software still isn’t quite advanced enough to recognize human faces that significantly depart from the usual symmetric arrangement of features. That’s where the ‘anti-face’ comes in, a way of altering your appearance via hairstyles and cosmetics to fool computers into thinking they’re looking at something other than a face. The CVDazzle project explores this idea with a series of six style tips for reclaiming privacy, explaining how to foil detection via makeup, obscuring the nose bridge and eyes as well as the elliptical shape of your face, modifying contrast and avoiding symmetry.

Totally Transparent: 14 See-Through Homes, Cars, Gadgets & Tech

06 Oct

[ By SA Rogers in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

transparent-kayak-3

If all walls and opaque surfaces were to disappear, leaving only see-through materials, what effect would that have on how we perceive the world around us? Designers present transparency in all sorts of objects, from washing machines and kayaks to entire houses, as a way to get a clearer picture of how we interact with and connect to our environments and each other.

PurePods: Clear Vacation Homes in New Zealand

transparent-pure-pods-3

Tiny vacation homes in the countryside of New Zealand, these ‘PurePods’ have all-glass floors, walls and ceilings to give guests uninterrupted views of their beautiful surroundings in every room – even the shower.

Clear Acrylic Car

transparent-car-1

transparent-car-2

All of the inner workings of a full-sized functional car are on display through a transparent acrylic body on this clear car by TWR Automotive, a company that manufactures auto parts. The car may not actually be road-ready, intended for exhibitions only, but it looks pretty cool and it’s fun to imagine watching the parts in motion.

Glass House Series by Santambrogiomilano

Designed to completely immerse occupants in nature in any location around the world, the glass houses by Santambrogiomilano consist of structural glass on every surface except the ground floor. Different versions are adapted for different climactic conditions, with ‘Snow House’ able to withstand heavy snow loads, for example. Want privacy in one particular room? Sliding curtains make it possible, but the houses are intended for places where peeping toms are not a concern.

Infinity Kitchen

transparent-kitchen-1

Better hope your kitchen cleaning habits are on point – the ‘Infinity Kitchen’ by Dutch firm MVRDV won’t be forgiving with crumbs and streaks, as it displays everything from your stored food to your flatware and even features a clear cooktop and sink. “I see this as part of a wider dream, this kitchen,” says designer Winy Maas. “Imagine if not only our kitchens were transparent, but the walls through to the neighbor and the next neighbor even. This would create infinite perspectives in our cities. It would make within our claustrophobic environments possibly a view into the direction of the mountains or the sea.”

Transparent Kayaks

Crystal-clear kayaks are actually catching on, with models like the Molokini, Crystal Explorer Kayak and See Through Canoe offering users views of the aquatic life beneath them as they float. Made of Lexan for durability, these transparent vessels start at around $ 1,000 each.

Drone Design: 14 Autonomous Gadgets Taking Tech to New Heights

20 Sep

[ By SA Rogers in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

drone-design-millennium-falcon-2

Their efficiency in the real world is yet to be established, but if these drone concepts and fully-realized creations are any indication, some of us could be looking at losing our jobs to robots in a range of industries over the net couple decades. From emergency responders to face-recognizing cameras, many of these autonomous flying gadgets take over tasks currently completed by pilots, construction workers, delivery drivers and videographers – but sometimes, they’re just for selfies.

Mercedes-Benz Electric Vision Van with Rooftop Drones

drone-design-mercedes-1

drone-design-ercedes-2

Designed for last-mile delivery in urban and suburban contexts, the all-electric ‘Vision Van’ by Mercedes-Benz is the first of its kind to feature built-in aerial drones that enable multiple package deliveries in a single neighborhood at the same time. This theoretically reduces the number of vehicles in any given residential area and makes the delivery process totally emissions-free. The van also features blue LED lighting on the lower body and slide-out shelving units. It certainly takes windowless vans to another level.

ROAM-e Mini Selfie Drone

drone-design-roam-e

drone-design-roam-e-2

What would have been seen as undeniably dystopian in previous decades is now packaged as a selfie assistance tool. The ROAM-e drone can be programmed with facial recognition technology so it follows you around like a puppy, snapping your photo or streaming live video all the while. Admittedly, the video function could be helpful, standing in for a camera operator in all sorts of settings and going where they can’t go (unless they’re secretly superheroes). The drone can be collapsed and folded to the side of a water bottle an two hours of swappable charging keeps the drone in the air for up to 20 minutes (for longer videos, switch out the battery.)

PowerEgg Drone

drone-design-power-egg

drone-design-power-egg-2

A small egg-shaped device sprouts propellers and turns into a personal camera drone at the push of a button. The PowerEgg by PowerVision is clean, simple and easy to transport, featuring a 360-degree panoramic 4K HD camera, advanced sensors for indoor navigation and real-time, long-range video transmission. You can snag one yourself for $ 1,288.

Drone Ambulance by Argodesign

drone-design-ambulance

drone-design-ambulance-2

Could this Drone Ambulance concept by Argodesign save lives by enabling more flying responders to hit the ground faster than a single helicopter? It’s about the size of a compact car and can land in much smaller areas, and a single pilot can manage an entire fleet of them remotely.

Trident Underwater Drone

drone-design-trident

drone-design-trident-2

Explore bodies of water without ever getting wet thanks to the Trident drone by Berkeley robotics company Openrov. No scuba gear and training is required when you send this portable machine down into the water in your place, and it can dive to a depth of 100 meters, sending live HD video to the surface via a thin buoyant tether. It can be controlled from the surface by a laptop or mobile device. The Trident is set to hit the market in November.

TIME names Kodak and Polaroid cameras two of the ‘most influential gadgets’ in history

07 May

TIME Magazine has published its list of ‘the 50 most influential gadgets of all time,’ and included among them is the Kodak Brownie Camera (#8) and the Polaroid Camera (#27). According to the publication, the list is ordered by each gadget’s influence on subsequent technologies and devices, such as the Brownie camera that helped bring photography ‘into everyday use.’

The Kodak Brownie Camera, launched in February 1900, was priced at $ 1 and used inexpensive film, making it possible for anyone to capture snapshots of daily life. The low price and subsequent ease by which anyone could get into photography boosted film sales for Kodak, but that was only a small part of the Brownie’s role in our history and its influence on our future. Says TIME, the Brownie camera ‘helped capture countless moments and shape civilization’s relationship to images.’

Arriving later on (and further down the list) is Polaroid and its OneStep Land instant camera launched in 1977. This model holds the distinction of having been the first affordable and easy to use camera of its kind, says TIME, going on to become so popular that the influence of its ‘square-framed, often off-color snaps’ lives on today in apps like Instagram.

Are the Brownie and Polaroid cameras deserving of their spots on the list? Let us know what you think in the comments.

dPS Writer’s Favorite Photography Gadgets

08 Nov

We sure do love our photography gadgets, so I thought it would be fun to see what things our dPS writers like to have in their bags. Things that are super handy to have – above and beyond the obvious camera and a lens.

Eddy 1

By Eddy 1

This is what they a few of them had to say (in alphabetical order by last name, just so there are no favorites):

Helen Bradley

  • Memory Card Carrying Case – Black / Wallet / Holder / Organizer / Bag – Storage for SD SDHC CF xD Camera Memory Cards With (5) Clear SD Jewel Cases & Everything But Stromboli Lanyard

James Brandon

  • Opteka RC-3 Wireless Remote Control for Sony Alpha line) – A little $ 7 remote that works for the Sony Alpha line. Great alternative to the expensive Sony option, and it hasn’t let me down yet. Great for long exposures whether it’s 30 seconds or 30 minutes.
  • Mindshift Filter Hive – An extremely well-made filter pouch from the makers of the Rotation 180 backpack. Fits all of my filters with room to spare and can easily be hung over my tripod while out shooting, for quick and easy access.Filter Nest by Mindshift Gear review
  • Coast HP14 High Performance Focusing 629 Lumen LED Flashlight – The best flashlight you’ll find for light painting. Puts out a clean, daylight balanced, light source at 339 lumens and runs on AA batteries. Push/pull focus mode let’s you easily focus the beam, or scatter it, and has two brightness modes (full power and low at 56 lumens).

Meredith Clark

  • Professor Kobre’s Lightscoop Standard Version Bounce Flash Device – Universal Model – When I first started and only had a Rebel XS and a kit lens, the Lightscoop was amazing for taking photos inside our house. It was a big improvement over the camera’s flash, and the $ 30 price tag felt do-able even when we were broke newlyweds.

Leanne Cole

Carl Berger

By Carl Berger

  • Holga Lens for Nikon – Red – The only gadget thing I can think of is the plastic hoya lens I bought which I have some fun with from time to time.
  • I also have some apps on my phone I use a lot for photography, Star Walk 2, Sunrise Sunset, Phases of the Moon, and TPE.

Ben Evans

  • Neewer 43-inch / 110cm 5-in-1 Collapsible Multi-Disc Light Reflector with Bag – Translucent, Silver, Gold, White and Black – a reflector is just incredibly useful.
  • Leatherman 831426 Wingman Multi-Tool – a multi tool has proven itself invaluable over the years for all sorts of tasks.
  • Extreme Pegs Stainless Steel Clothespins – 20 pack – Lifetime Guarantee – proper pegs: they’re not only great for pinning clothes but also hanging backgrounds, reflectors etc.

IMG_2208Tim Gilbreath

  • Canon Remote Switch RS60 E3
  • Nitz custom handmade camera strap – look for a review of this on dPS soon (see right)!

Ivo Guimarães

  • Manfrotto 5001B 74-Inch Nano Stand – Black – I use these mainly for off-camera flash support and I really like their portability and lightweight.
  • X-Rite MSCCPP ColorChecker Passport – Color Checker Passport – I use it mainly for portrait photography, it’s a great help to correct skin tones.
  • Gary Fong Collapsible Speed Mount Light Sphere (White) – I use it for on camera flash diffusion and avoid harsh shadows.

    Keith Williamson

    By Keith Williamson

Jim Hamel

  • Alpine Innovations Spudz Classic Microfiber Cloth, Screen Cleaner and Lens Cleaner – Somebody else mentioned micro-fiber clothes, but I like the clip-on ones because you can attach them to your camera strap so you never have to hunt through your bag to find it.
  • B+W 77mm ND 3.0-1,000X with Single Coating (110) – 10 stop ND filter: Whenver there is water in the scene, it is a safe bet I have this filter on my camera to smooth it out. Even when there is not water, it creates movement in the skies.

Lea Hawkins

  • Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control – Well, I’m not really into gear or gadgets. The only gadget I have is a remote shutter release, or “The Clicky Thingy” as we refer to it in the studio. Mainly used to avoid camera shake on long exposures, and occasionally to amuse/relax portrait subjects by telling them I am so confident in them as a portrait subject that I don’t even need to look as I click over my shoulder, with my back to them and the camera.
  • Other than that, I’d say any small flash light for light painting and my mobile phone camera with different apps. The latter being the most useful of the three, I use it on almost every shoot.

Darlene Hildebrandt (that’s me)

  • Promaster 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter – I don’t use a lot of gadgets or filters but I always have this one in my bag. I use it to shoot waterfalls, or to get a larger aperture in bright sunlight.
  • Promaster Go! Universal Digital Battery Charger – this thing is a life saver! It is a battery charger on steroids because it has an internal battery itself. Plug it in and charge it up, and you can then charge about 4-5 batteries on the road, while driving, or away from electricity. Great for travellers or back country hikers.
  • Pacsafe Carrysafe 200, Black, One Size – Another travel must have item, especially if you visit third world countries where your camera is equal to a year’s salary for some people. This strap is slash proof, and locks so they can’t just slide it off without your knowledge. Keeps your camera safe – I have a purse made by the same guys too!
  • A headlamp! I always have one in my bag for night shooting so I can use it to see, or do light painting.
Joe Loong

By Joe Loong

Daniel Korzeniewski

  • Peak Design CapturePRO Camera Clip – Great for quick access to the camera on the go. I can attach it to the strap of my shoulder bag, a belt, or to the straps of a backpack. It can be easily attached to almost anything and your camera is always handy.
  • MagGrip – One the most clever ways to attach diffusers to any flash without being cumbersome, and they are always ready. I particular use the grids, the color gels and… MagBounce
  • NEEWER® 160 LED CN-160 Dimmable Ultra High Power Panel LED Light – This is a little but powerful LED light. I use it mainly as fill for portraits when shooting outdoors, I like the fact that is easy to see the effect right on your subject.

Lynsey Mattingly

  • Dum Dum Pops 85.5 oz, 500-Count – Never did I think I would be known as The Lollipop Lady more than a photographer, but the promise of one of these gets me a lot of street creed in the 3-8 year old group.
  • Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Film Camera (White)I still have a love affair with Polaroids, so I bring this for me when I see something and want it NOW, plus kids LOVE this if I can’t win them over with lollipops.
  • Kleenex® 3-Ply Pocket Packs Facial Tissues (8 packs of 10 tissues) – I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable when the goal is for them to be comfortable, and offering someone a Kleenex seems a lot nicer than saying, “Hey, you totally have something in your nose!”

John McIntire

  • Wil C. Fry

    By Wil C. Fry

Extension tubes – Non-mechanical Extension Tubes: They can be a bit finicky since you’re stuck with your lens’ widest aperture and only manual focus but they’re really cheap and so much fun to use.

  • Huion® L4S Tracing Light Box USB Powered with Adjustable Light Intensity – Light Box: Good as a light source that you can put your subject directly onto. Also, unlike my ipad, I’m willing to put food and liquid on it.
  • Index Cards: Always in my camera bag. Taped or rubber banded to a flashgun that’s pointed straight up, they can diffuse the light just as well as any of the much more expensive plastic diffusers on the market.

Alex Morrison

  • A flash diffuser for macro shooting, made from a plastic milk jug (a possible future dPS DIY article)

Gina Milicia

  • Knee pads ($ 10) can’t shoot without them.
  • Gaffer tape
  • 5-in-one reflector diffuser

Suzi Pratt

  • Think Tank Photo Credential Holder V2.0 Short
  • Xlear Spry Power Peppermint Mints, 240-Count
  • Anker 2nd Generation Astro mini 3350mAh Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger External Battery Power Bank with PowerIQ Technology for iPhone, Samsung, GoPro and More (Black)

Simon Ringsmuth

  • AmazonBasics Wireless Remote Control for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras – I’m normally not a big fan of off-brand stuff, but Amazon Basics is almost always really good quality. So far this remote is no exception.

Danielle Werner

Ariane Colenbrander

By Ariane Colenbrander

  • BlackRapid RS2SW-1AS Women’s Camera Strap (Black) – This camera strap is a life saver. It keeps your camera secure to your hip, easy to bring up to your face without getting tangled, and you can drop it and it slides right down by your side. It keeps the camera out of your way when not using it, plus your neck will be happy that it’s not sore from shooting and traveling all day long
  • Zeiss lens wipes – They are so necessary when shooting all around the world. You never know what could get on those lenses when traveling. These wipes are great for all parts of the camera too.
  • Camera backpacks – This is ideal when you never know where you are going to be and when! Camera is always safe and secure. Plus it’s out of the way and always with you.

Bruce Wonderlich

  • Hood Loupe – It can be hard to see the LED screen to check your focus, but with the HoodLoupe it is easy to see
  • Extra Large Microfiber Cleaning Cloths – 5 Pack – 8 x 8 inch (Black, Grey, Green, Blue, Yellow)

Scott Wyden Kivowitz

  • X-Rite MSCCPP ColorChecker Passport – Being a colorblind photographer I find this tool, and its Lightroom software counterpart, essential to my everyday photography workflow. It helps me achieve the most accurate color.

    Jerry Liu

    By Jerry Liu

  • Trigger Trap – I always carry my TriggerTrap with me because it enables me to do much more than what is possible with a standard cable release. I can trigger by motion, sound and much more.
  • AquaTech Tripod Leg Pad – Set of 2, Soft Feel, High Abrasion Resistance – I didn’t want a permanent leg wrap for my tripod, and when I found these I was pleasantly surprised by their comfort and easy of adjustment.

What are your go-to photography gadgets, or non-photography related ones? Please share in the comments below – we all might need a shopping list when we’re done!

Wired Wood: 13 Handmade Versions of Electronic Gadgets

14 Apr

[ By Steph in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

wood gadgets record 1

Anyone who longs for the days of simpler, longer-lasting gadgets will love these lo-fi wooden versions of modern tech, including a pixel display made of blocks, laser-cut wood records, an orb-shaped computer mouse and even an all-wood version of a classic arcade game system.

Lo-Fi Pixel Display
wood gadgets pixel display 2

wood gadgets pixel display

Wooden blocks measuring 1.5 inches across stand in for digital pixels in this analog version of a display screen created by Han Lee. The 64 blocks were laser-cut and connected to an Arduino Uno, which controls the imagery.

Laser-Cut Records
wood record

Designer Amanda Ghassaei programmed a laser cutter to turn round slices of wood into playable records. Audio data is ripped from a WAV file and then turned into a PDF of a vector graphic containing all of the little bumps and grooves needed to reproduce the music on a record player.

White Fruit Radio

white fruit radio

Inspired by the way biological organisms organize their internal and external components, the ‘White Fruit Radio’ makes use of sycamore’s acoustic properties. There are no buttons or knobs on the outside – instead, it’s controlled by rubbing your finger across the ripples on the side.

Tiny iPhone Speakers

wood gadgets iphone speaker

Measuring less than a cubic inch each, these cute little ‘i-Dear’ speakers can hang from your keychain until you need to plug them in to your iPhone or other portable media player. Powered by built-in rechargeable batteries, they’ll play for about five hours before they need to be plugged into a USB power source again.

Retro Style Tech: 10 Modern Gadgets with a Nostalgic Look

20 Jan

[ By Steph in Technology & Vintage & Retro. ]

philco pc

If you’re nostalgic for Walkman-equipped jogs, need a desktop computer that fits into a midcentury modern design scheme or just want to gaze lovingly at cassette tapes and reminisce while you’re working, these gadgets will scratch that itch while still providing all the functions you expect from contemporary technology.

CURVED/labs Macintosh-Inspired Computer

retro tech macintosh

This computer by CURVED/LAbs features the same sleek aluminum casing seen on the latest slimline Apple computers, but takes the aesthetics in the other direction – way back to the original Macintosh released in 1984. The computer mimics the original in looks, but features a 11.6-inch touchscreen, SD card slots, speakers, microphones and all of the other modern functions and accessories you’d expect.

Rotary iPhone Dock

retro tech rotary iphone dock

Cast in resin to perfectly replicate vintage rotary phones, this iPhone dock by iRetrofone on Etsy features a spot that fits various generations of iPhones just right. It’ll charge your phone, and the handset is actually usable, so you can pretend like it’s 1985 while chatting, even as you swipe at apps on your screen.

Audio Infuser Stereo & Record Player

retro tech audio infuser 2
retro tech audio infuser 1

It may look like it could be, but designer Todd Kumpf emphasizes of the Audio Infuser 4700 that it’s “not your grandpa’s stereo.” The exterior looks just like retro stereos with its stained wood and brushed aluminum, but in addition to playing records, it’s equipped with a Linux-driven Raspberri Pi that operates as the wifi receiver so the stereo can stream music wirelessly from any mobile device, laptop or desktop computer. It can even stream music from the record player out to other wifi enabled speakers.

Vintage Camera iPhone Dock

Sometimes high-tech gadgets just don’t fit in with the aesthetics of your personal space. Anyone with a vintage flair in their interior design might like an iPhone charger that fits in with the decor on their bedside table, like the camera docks created by Etsy shop Laboratorio Altieri.

Gramaphone for iPhone

iphone gramaphone

Take it way back to the early 20th century with an iphone amplifier made to look just like an old gramophone, with a solid walnut dock. It’s available at Restoration Hardware.

Brilliant Brick Creations: 13 Amazing LEGO Gadgets & Art

15 Dec

[ By Steph in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

superawesomemicroproject-designboom00

LEGOs can form the basis of all sorts of amazing things, but would you ever have imagined they could create working prosthetics, mechanical looms, drivable hot-rods and even full-sized houses? These 13 incredible creations test the limits of the little plastic bricks, proving that there’s no reason to put them aside as ‘toys’ when we reach adulthood.

Wheelchair for a Disabled Tortoise
strange LEGO tortoise wheelchair

Poor little ‘Blade’ wasn’t managing to get around very well on his own, so his human companion brought him in to local veterinarian Carsten Plischke. Realizing the turtle had a disability that made it hard for him to carry his own weight, Plischke fashioned an adorable little wheelchair out of parts from his son’s Lego collection.

LEGO x IKEA: Furniture Animals
strange LEGO IKEA 1

strange LEGO IKEA 2

strange LEGO IKEA 3

Here’s the LEGO and Ikea mashup you never knew you needed: building block animals interwoven with inexpensive Swedish furniture. ‘Venereal Architecture’ by Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro includes a lion, deer, stingray, snake, tortoise, octopus and other creatures built around various Ikea items. “As humans we are ever adapting and manipulating our environment to cope with the elements and creatures that share our spaces. We build structures that enclose and protect us from nature. Air conditioning controls the temperature and we domesticate animals so they can live with us.”

“Our control over nature (or lack there of) is central to this body of work. Lego and Ikea furniture are very similar in a sense: they are both objects of aspiration that require assembly… both products represent destruction and re-construction, which are concerns we revisit continually within our practice.”
