Built in the 1860s and now on sale for half a million pounds (under $ 1,000,000) , it is hard to beat what this sea fort offers by way of views, a prestigious address (No 1 Thames) and amazing location (a short commute by speedboat from London).

The massive fortified structure (featuring 15-foot-thick walls) can be accessed by boat or walked to when the tide is low, albeit a long and muddy way to go. A BBC interview (screenshots above and below) shows both the problems and potential of this amazing piece of real estate – there are precedents, too, for converting old British army and sea forts as well as harbor bases.

The current owner purchased the property from the Crown Estate, which is to say he approach the “Lord High Admiral for Her Most Excellency Majesty Queen Elizabeth”, made an offer and had it accepted.

However, the buyer-turned-seller, himself a London resident, never found the time or funds to refurbish the place, so it remains in a state of partial decay – a would-be purchaser should expect a significant outlay for renovating the building’s exterior and interior alike.

Still, for someone with a fortune as well as a vision, it is hard to imagine a neater place to escape from city life. The firm WT Architecture has already taken a stab at conceptual designs for rehabilitating to structure (renderings shown above and below). As their drawings illustrate, there is a rich variety in terms of materials, shapes and spaces to work with, including a cavernous central stone circle with a tall wood-and-concrete watchtower and an adjacent rectangular brick structure (that could be used for guests).

As BldgBlog notes, “At first glance, it’s an amazing offshore castle, a fairy tale artificial island of 19th-century military Romanticism roughly an hour’s boat ride east of London. But don’t jump in too quickly, lest you overlook the ruinous state of the place: it needs almost literally everything, from plumbing to electricity, glass windows to the most thorough cleaning you could imagine, having been open to the oceanic elements for decades”

Sea Fort Retreat: Island Hotel in 1860s British Harbor Base

converted sea fort

Known for its naval power, England has a great many leftover army and sea forts. Some have been turned into private islands, radio station or micronations, but this one has been made into a museum and luxury resort.

converted sea base hotel

The Spitbank Fort was the result of an 1859 Royal Commission and is located in the Solent, near Portsmouth, England. Though its purpose and wares shifted somewhat over time, it was aimed at protect British shores from both sea and (eventually) air attacks.

The structure remained an operational military island for a full century before being decommissioned in the late 1900s as obsolete.

converted hotel room interiors

Five million dollars worth of renovations later, the structure is now a hybrid of its original architecture and engineering and added luxuries including (but not limited to) hotel rooms, bars, restaurants, libraries, saunas, sun decks and swimming pools.

Day and overnight guests alike can enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner in the cozy brick interior or with a 360-degree exterior vista above.

South Platte River at Fort Lupton – Northern Colorado Paddling

12 Mar
Subaru Outback and JKK Supernova kayak>
I haven’t paddled my JKK Supernova kayak since 2012 Missouri River 340 race. I decided that to rinse some Missouri mud off.

paddling South Platte River

About 2 miles upstream of Fort Lupton. The river was shallow, fast, twisty, stinky … Near perfect! I had a great workout.

Back to Fort Lupton.

I have paddled JKK Supernova starting at Fort Lupton several times this winter. It seems that my driving time from Fort Collins is about 45 minutes and is not longer than driving to Kersey below Greeley. I didn’t try to paddle my SUP since some spots were too shallow for a fin.

This is a diversion dam just below Fort Lupton. I’ve paddled the river between Fort Lupton and the confluence wit St Vrain Creek. There are 7 dams in this short section. Maybe, it’s a time to run it just for documentary purposes, certainly, not for recreation. It feels like a packrafting project.

Winter Walk Along the Poudre River in Fort Collins

11 Jan

All my local paddling waters are covered by ice. Even the Horsetooth Reservoir is partially frozen as seen in this recent picture of the Inlet Bay. So, it’s time for more hiking, biking and inline skating or driving to the South Platte River which is open and flowing.

Here is a little gallery of pictures shot during winter time along the Cache la Poudre River in Fort Collins. They came from favorite natural areas, Arapaho Bend and Riverbend Ponds or just from the Poudre biking trail.

These images are available for licensing as royalty free digital downloads starting with $ 2 directly from my stock photography portfolio. Recently, I started to sort my Colorado portfolio into several galleries. It should not be surprising that three of them are related to water:

Horsetooth Reservoir and Horsetooth Mountain Open Space near Fort Colorado – a great area for water sports, hiking, climbing, trail running, and mountain biking. It is my favorite local destination for kayak, canoe and SUP paddling.

Water issues mostly in Colorado – river diversion, irrigation, ditches, water pollution. Many pictures in this gallery are shot from a kayaker perspective.
