Pixelated Masterpieces: 3 Classic Paintings in LEGO Form

Classic Paintings Legos 1

Chances are, you recognize these images, even though they’re simply arrangements of a few dozen colored LEGO bricks. Squint your eyes, and three of the world’s most famous masterpieces come into hazy pixelated focus, your memory filling in the details that can’t be rendered in this form.

Classic Paintings Legos 2

Italian designer Marco Soldano interpreted two works by Leonardo da Vinci and one by Johannes Vermeer using official LEGO blocks. “All the children are authentic artists with LEGO,” he says.

The works, of course, are (from top to bottom) the Mona Lisa, The Girl with a Pearl Earring and Lady with an Ermine. Subtle variations in tone suggest the highlights and shadows, the folds of fabric, the mountain landscape, even the subtle twist of the third subject’s posture.

LEGO bricks continue to be a favorite medium for designers, who have used them to recreate everything from a 500,000-piece working water-powered hot rod to the entire borough of Brooklyn. See 20 more works of LEGO art (including another LEGO Mona Lisa.)

Sandcastle Suburbs: Beach Buildings Form Fragile Sprawl

19 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

sand castle suburb

If castles of sand are ordinarily creative (if childish) works of artistic expression, then these are their opposite – boring and relentless repetition of identical houses inspired by postwar suburbia and deployed on an incongruous grid.

sand house installation art

This piece of Master Plan is (or rather: was) the first small and temporary installation of an ongoing series by Chad Wright (photography by Lynn Kloythanomsup of Architectural Black). The project is intended as a personal reflection on his own history as well as commentary on the American Dream in light of recent history, particularly the housing crisis. Much like market shocks (metaphorically) or the passage of time (literally), each incoming wave cracks and erodes the constituent buildings in a relentless yet unpredictable fashion.

About the artist and how his history is intertwined with this work: “I was raised in Orange County—a sprawling suburb of Southern California built by disciples of Levittown. We lived in a tract house, a symbol of the American Dream, just like our neighbors. Dad, a realtor, and mom, a preschool teacher, met while working at JCPenneys in 1970. We spent our summers in Breezy Point, New York, at the yellow beach bungalow that my grandma Stella bought with war bonds, unknown to grandpa who was stationed in Iwo Jima soon after they eloped. As children, my big brother Christopher and I would build cities in the sand, beneath the bungalow’s slatted porch floorboards. Phase One [of Master Plan] focuses on the mass-produced tract house, re-examining it as symbol for the model American Dream.

Origami Kayak: Packs Flat, Folds Up to Form its Own Case

25 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

kayak flat pack

Portaging in the wild is one thing, but try walking your canoe or kayak down the street (let alone through an airport) and you may smack someone right in the head – hence this city-friendly creation (25 pounds, 25 inches wide, and 12 feet long when deployed!).

kayak portable folding design

Compact, portable and light-weight, the Oru kayak folds in on itself to form a shoulder-ready carrying case containing, well, itself. It then unfolds and assembles in just five minutes – perfect for those living in crowded urban environments with little storage space.

From its creators: “Stash it in a trunk. Check it on a plane. Stow it on a sailboat. Hike it in to remote waters. No garage, SUV or roof racks necessary. The Oru Kayak makes boating simple, easy, and accessible— so you can spend more time on the water.”

But it is not just about mobility and transit – how the Oru works as a water vehicle matters as well: “The Oru Kayak is fast, stable, and handles incredibly well. Its light weight makes it fast and easy to paddle. The hard chines offer excellent tracking. And the 25″ width makes balancing easy, even for beginners. Check our blog for upcoming demos near you!” The catch? You may need to find the perfect flat-pack paddle to match!

5 Room-in-a-Box Designs Form 100% Modular Home Interior

modular interior collection

For the space-saving fanatic who hates to leave even one square inch unused, or the minimalist who wants everything to work smoothly and simply, this collection may be the ultimate(albeit ambitious and not-inexpensive) all-in-one solution.

modular space furniture collection

Rolands Landsbergs designed the Boxetti Collection to address every major type of living space, “driven by three basic design principles – functionality, advanced technologies and contemporary aesthetics of minimalism. Each of Boxetti modules is designed to achieve maximum efficiency of particular demands for functionality and suitability.”

modular kitchen office units

Five boxes form the basis of the system: a bedroom box with a bed, closet and more; a living room box with couch and tables; a media center with television, music player and stereo speakers; an office with seating and work surfaces and a kitchen with storage, cooking and food preparation surfaces and spaces. Each one uses the same language of angular geometries, glossy white exteriors and warm orange interiors.

From the designer: “The capability of the modules to be transformed into compactly solid blocks is essential for the design concept in order to obtain an unobstructed and comfortable space – free of uselessness. The Boxetti Collection is a handmade product – the quality of materials as well as structural and technological solutions endues the collection to the extent of exclusiveness.”

Face Books: 4 Written Portraits form 3D Autobiographies

16 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Guerilla Ads & Marketing. ]

Move over, Facebook. A hybrid celebration of the written word, printed page, physical sculpture and possibilities of cutting-edge technologies, these conceptual creations breath new life into old volumes.

Featured in full three-dimensional form, with internal text conforming to exterior shape, are Anne Frank, Vincent van Gosh, Louis van Gaal and Kader Abdolah, designed to promote regional literature in the Netherlands.

Each page is only a little different from the last, but as those changes propagate, a shape is revealed – while only concepts illustrated to celebrate reading, one has to wonder what it would be like to pick one up and flip through the pages.

From Van Wanten Etcetera in Amsterdam (with artwork by Souverein): “Each year CPNB (Collective Promotion [of] Dutch Literature) organizzes the Dutch Book Week to promote Dutch literature. And every year a specific genre is being profiled. This year the (auto) biography is featured. This is translated in the theme ‘Geschreven Portretten’, which translates in ‘Written Portraits’. “
