Sea Monsters: Massive Crocheted Sea Urchins Float Over Singapore

14 Jun

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

Mutant sea urchins seem to have evolved into monstrous, buoyant creatures capable of rising above the surface of the sea, glowing softly against the skyline in Singapore. Made from crocheted lace, these three oversized urchin installations by Choi + Shine invite passersby to pause within them and take in the city through their patterned shells.

Created for this year’s i Light Marina Bay Festival, which focuses on sustainability, The Urchins are hand-crafted and interactive, each one hanging high enough to dwarf even the tallest visitors. Made from UV- and weather-resistant polyester cord stretched on an aluminum frame, the urchins hang from ultra thin cables.

“At night, the mysteriously hovering and glowing large Urchins create a sense of magic as if time has stopped,” says Choi + Shine. “When viewers enter into the Urchins, they will be surrounded by a single layer of glowing, lacy surface, where they can enjoy the detail and texture of the Urchins and see the city, water and the sky through this visual filter.”

“When other viewers see the occupants in the Urchins, the occupants will glow within the lacy room, creating an illusion of ethereal levitation of the occupants, while the occupants become a part of the artwork.”

Air Bonsai: Magnetic Levitation Kit Lets You Float Little Trees

21 Feb

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

floating air bonsai plant

Taking bonsai approaches to the next level, a Japanese company based out of Kyushu has raised over half a million dollars so far for its levitating (and rotating) tree system.

The fauna in question span quite a range, from flowering plants to pine trees to mosses. The magnetic levitation tech supports up to 250 grams of whatever species you prefer (up to a few inches in width), powered via a simple AC adapter.

Of course, you can further decorate your little floating worlds however you like, with ceramic figures, lava rocks or other scene-setting touches.

The system comes as a DIY kit priced starting at around $ 200, depending on whether you wish to get both the mechanical system and a starter plant or just the technology portion. There are also both modern and traditional-looking, hand-crafted bases, depending on your aesthetic preferences.

Invisible Tree: Trunk Wrapped & Camouflaged to Float on Air

invisible tree painting process

A simple illusion with so much potential – wrap an object, paint the wrapping plastic and presto, a central section appears to disappear before your eyes.

invisble tree floating effect

In the the case of this collaboration between street artists Daniel Siering and Mario Shu, it would seem the trick only works from one perspective. Still, in a consistent landscape, the effect could work in potentially all directions.

The only problem one might worry about in the case of this roadside attraction is the impact on surprised drivers doing a double-take as they pass by.

Working in a similar vein, another artistic duo (Joakim Kaminsky and Maria Poll) installed Clear Cut in the Medelpad, Sweden.

They circled trees with mirrored material to create a less-consistent but still-impressive and (in this instance) fully-circular effect.

Unified Color Technologies introduces HDR Expose 3 and 32 Float v3

24 Jul

Unified Color Technologies has announced HDR Expose 3 and 32 Float 3 – the latest versions of its HDR software. HDR Expose is the company’s stand-alone software, which works in the company’s ‘Beyond RGB’ 32-bit color space and attempts to manipulate chroma and luminance data separately, while 32 Float is a Photoshop plugin built on the same principles. The latest versions gain improved tone mapping tools that attempt to retain local contrast while increasing the overall range of tones included in the final image, along with upgraded alignement and de-ghosting.

Amphibious Architecture: Foundations Float Above Floods

11 May

floating homes

Floodwaters rise, drench homes, then recede, leaving disaster in their wake – a temporary change renders many structures permanently uninhabitable. But what if houses could ride out the storms, rising with the tides, then settling back down to the ground when the water is gone?

floating adaptive aquatic architecture

Based on the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Morphosis (along with Brad Pitt’s Make it Right Foundation) has designs for new adaptive architecture, while the Bouyant Foundation Project proposes a system for retrofitting existing homes. Each approach would allow structures to do lift off the ground in an emergency and uses regional shotgun-style dwellings as their baseline typology.

floating flood disaster design

BFP outlines a process that involves attaching buoyancy blocks below the home, connecting them to the sub-frame, and installing four corner guideposts to keep the building in place along horizontal axes while allowing it to lift (and settle) vertically on demand.

Connections to utilities (gas, water, power and so forth) would be either severable or extendable, so they could detach and reattach or simply expand and contract as needed. In plan, nothing changes – in elevation, predictable but periodic disasters are accommodated.

Retro Hover Cars: Editing Photos to Float Vintage Rides

19 Feb

hover car

One of the most common concepts for the future has long been the wheel-free automobile, even before it was popularized in Back to the Future – but always, these looked almost shockingly familiar to our everyday rides.

hover floating retro cars

Renaud Marion is well established in the realm of realistic photo editing, splicing everything from architecture to wild animals into ordinary city street scenes and letting the strange juxtapositions speak for themselves.

hover vintage car photoshop

In this new series, he simply (albeit carefully) edits out all trace of wheels from various vintage vehicles, resulting in surreal portraits of apparently-flying cars. Even the dingiest rusting old 70′s-era auto seems somehow wonderfully otherworldly after he is done.
