New Sony a1 firmware update (version 1.10) addresses EVF and IBIS issues some users were experiencing

Sony has released a firmware update for its a1 camera that addresses, amongst other things, in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and electronic viewfinder (EVF) blackout issues some users have been experiencing.

Before getting to the new details of the version 1.10 firmware update for the Sony a1, let’s look at what led to the EVF and IBIS issue being discovered.

Last month, photographer and DPReview forum member Jamieson Dean (f1point4andbethere) shared in a post on our Sony E-mount forum that he was having issues with the IBIS in his then-new Sony a1. In the video demonstration (embedded below) he shared in the post, Dean shows how his Sony a1 unit would delay the activation of the IBIS mechanism with both Sony and third-party lenses.

In replies to Dean’s original forum post, other photographers chimed in and said they too had been experiencing IBIS issues with their respective a1 units, while others also noted there was an issue with the EVF of their a1 units blacking out at times. Eventually, Dean was able to get in contact with Sony to replace his a1, but the new unit had the same IBIS problem. In fact, as visible in the below comparison video, the problem was even more pronounced in the replacement a1.

‘I don’t believe my usage of the camera is outlandish,’ said Dean in a follow-up post. ‘I have had this issue with both my original A1 as well as the replacement that Sony gave me […] It occurs with all non-stabilized lenses, and happens roughly 50% of the time for me during normal use.’

Now, over a month later, it seems Sony has addressed EVF and IBIS issues, even if it hasn’t specifically addressed the latter in its firmware update changelog:

  • Improves overall AF performance and stability
  • Improves operability when using the Remote Camera Tool app Note: Make sure you have updated the Remote Camera Tool app to the most recent version
  • Improves eye sensor detection performance with strong light sources, such as sunlight [this is believed to be the issue behind the EVF blackout problem]
  • Improves operational stability when using the Imaging Edge Mobile apps
  • Improves operational stability when using the SEL100400GM, SEL200600G, or SEL600F40GM lens
  • Improves the overall stability of the camera

As visible in a new video from Dean, the 1.10 firmware update fixes the lag previously seen in both of Dean’s a1 camera units. Dean says ‘the ibis is flawless now’ and notes ‘it’s working at least on par with [his] a7 III now’ in new forum posts made today.

Regardless of whether or not you were experiencing any of these issues, firmware version 1.10 for the Sony a1 appears to be substantial from a reliability and usability standpoint, so be sure to download it using the link below.

Canon’s EOS R5 gets C-Log 3, 120 fps Full HD shooting with 1.3.0 firmware update

Canon has released firmware updates for its EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS 1D X Mark III camera systems, bringing new features and improvements, especially for its EOS R5 mirrorless camera.

EOS R5

Firmware version 1.3.0 for the Canon EOS R5 brings Canon Log 3 shooting to Canon’s current flagship mirrorless camera. Canon Log 3, commonly shortened to C-Log 3, is available in Canon’s Cinema EOS Series cameras and is a ‘logarithmic gamma curve designed to achieve very wide dynamic ranges and be compatible with cinema production workflows.’ This addition not only adds more flexibility to footage captured with the EOS R5 as a standalone camera, but should also make it easier to color match EOS R5 footage when used in conjunction with Canon’s Cinema EOS Series cameras.

Canon has also added Full HD recording at up to 120 frames per second (fps) as well as a new Low Bitrate recording option, which Canon says allows ‘users to shoot smaller file size footage with lower image details.’

Other updates in the updated include electronic full-time manual focus, a new LCD backlight off option, an FTP transfer status display, protected image transfer, save/load settings on card and a few bug fixes.

EOS R6

Firmware version 1.3.0 for the Canon EOS R6 isn’t quite as dramatic as it is for Canon’s EOS R5, but it still adds the low bitrate recording option, electronic full-time manual focus, the FTP transfer status display and bug fixes.

EOS-1D X Mark III

Firmware version 1.4.0 for Canon’s latest flagship DSLR adds the same low bitrate recording mode found in the EOS R5 and EOS R6 firmware updates, as well as the FTP transfer status display. Canon has also improved the connection reliability when using FTP and USB simultaneously.

Sony a7S III gets S-Cinetone color profile with new 2.00 firmware update

Earlier this week, Sony Nordic accidentally sent out a newsletter with details of the next firmware update for its a7S III mirrorless camera. Now, firmware version 2.00 for the a7S III is live and ready to download for all.

As mentioned in our initial coverage, firmware version 2.00 now includes Sony’s S-Cinetone color profile, first seen in its F6X Cinema Line camera and ‘inspired by the color science used in Sony’s flagship VENICE cinema camera.’

The color profile, which Sony says ‘delivers natural mid-tones, plus soft colors and gorgeous highlights’ can be used for monitoring only or as a ‘baked-in’ look so the footage is graded for less work in post-production. The update also improves Active Mode with 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization.

You can download firmware version 2.00 for the Sony a7S III on Sony’s support website. Sony notes macOS Big Sur is not supported at this time.

Fujifilm adds a 400MP capture mode to its GFX 100 camera with 3.00 firmware update

Fujifilm has announced a firmware update for its GFX 100 camera that adds Pixel Shift and Multi-Shot functions to its flagship camera, which work alongside Fujifilm’s new Pixel Shift Combiner software to stitch together up to 16 Raw photographs into a single 400MP Raw image.

The new 400MP image capture mode in firmware version 3.00 combines the capabilities of the GFX 100’s 102MP sensor, its in-body image stabilization and the X Processor 4 inside. To achieve this level of resolution, the GFX 100 will first capture a the base shot, before shifting the sensor one pixel left, right and down for a total of four images. The camera will then repeat this process with each of these four images for a total of 16 Raw photographs.

This method ensures each pixel records image data in red, green and blue, which helps to increase color reproduction accuracy with minimal false color. To get the final result, users will need to rely on Fujifilm’s new Pixel Shift Combiner software, which will automatically stitch all 16 Raw images together to create a single 400MP Raw image (DNG), which can then be edited in the program of your choosing.

The high color accuracy and resolution make this an obvious choice for digital archiving and art preservation, but also for commercial photographers who need resolution and accuracy, as showcased with this image of the one-off Koenigsegg Agera RS ‘Draken’ from Dan Kang:

Firmware version 3.00 for the Fujifilm GFX 100 also addresses a few smaller changes. Now, when rating images captured in the [JPEG + Raw] mode, both the JPEG and Raw file will keep the rating. Fujifilm has also fixed an issue that caused its EF-X500 to incorrectly fire other flash groups when using it as a commander in multi-flash scenarios. Eye AF performance has also been improved and a number of smaller bugs have been addressed as well.

Canon releases mostly minor firmware updates for five cameras and its RF 50mm F1.2 lens

Canon has released a barrage of firmware updates for a number of its mirrorless cameras and a single RF lens, bringing new and improved features, as well as the usual bug fixes. None of the updates offer major improvements in autofocus or other areas, but they all take care of a few ‘phenomena’ and offer support for newer Canon lenses.

Canon RF 50mm F1.2 L USM

We’ll go ahead and get the most minor firmware update out of the way first. The Canon RF 50mm F1.2 L USM lens has received a version 1.0.5 firmware update that ‘Reduces image noise when performing high sensitivity shooting with the RF50mm F1.2 L USM lens attached to the EOS C70 camera.’ How exactly a firmware update for a lens addresses noise issues is a bit intriguing, but it never hurts to have the latest update anyway. You can download firmware version 1.0.5 for the Canon RF 50mm F1.2 L USM lens on Canon’s website.

Canon EOS R and RP

We’ve grouped these two updates together, because they offer the exact same changes, according to Canon’s changelog. Firmware version 1.6.0 for the EOS RP and firmware version 1.8.0 for the EOS R improves color balance when shooting with the Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM lens and adds support for Canon’s newer RF 70–200mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF 100–500mm F4.5–7.1 L IS USM lenses. You can download firmware version 1.6.0 for the EOS RP and firmware version 1.8.0 for the EOS R on Canon’s respective product pages.

Canon EOS R5 and R6

As with the EOS RP and R firmware updates, the latest updates for Canon’s EOS R5 and R6 cameras are identical to one another based on the changelogs. Firmware version 1.2.0 for both cameras addresses the following changes and improvements:

  • When using high-speed or low-speed continuous shooting modes, in Drive Mode with [High Speed Display: OFF], the visibility of the subject within the frame has been improved when shooting moving objects.*
    *During continuous shooting black frames will be inserted between frames in the viewfinder and live view. This will improve the visibility of moving subjects in live view and in the viewfinder.
  • Adds the [Auto] setting to the [Viewfinder brightness] menu that will brighten and dim based on ambient light conditions.
  • Enables 2nd curtain shooting sync during radio transmission wireless flash shooting when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.
  • Enables manual flash output (excluding high-speed sync and optical transmission wireless flash shooting) to be selected and set up to 1/8192 from the camera menu screen when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.
  • Improves compatibility of HEIF images recorded in the camera with MIAF (Multi-Image Application Format) standards.
  • Adds support for AF and release during zoom operations for some RF and EF lenses.

Canon 1D X Mark III

Lastly, Canon has updated its flagship DSLR, the EOS 1D X Mark III. Firmware version 1.3.0 addresses the following changes and improvements:

  • Enables 2nd curtain shooting sync during radio transmission wireless flash shooting when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.
  • Enables manual flash output (excluding high-speed sync and optical transmission wireless flash shooting) to be selected and set up to 1/8192 from the camera menu screen when the Speedlite EL-1 flash is attached to the camera.
  • Improves compatibility of HEIF images recorded in the camera with MIAF (Multi-Image Application Format) standards.
  • Fixes the phenomenon that may result in the occurrence of time-out under certain conditions during FTP transfer.

Firmware update: Olympus E-M1X gets bird AF along with Raw video

Olympus has announced a firmware update that will enhance the capabilities of its flagship E-M1X sports camera. Some of the features will be cascaded down to the E-M1 III, E-M1 II and E-M5 III.

Exclusive to the E-M1X is ‘Bird detection AF’, which expands the camera’s AI-trained subject recognition system. Bird AF will focus on the eyes of birds, or their bodies if the eye isn’t visible. This subject-aware AF can be used in conjunction with the camera’s Pro Capture pre-buffering mode, to increase your chances of getting the perfect birding shot.

Both the E-M1X and E-M1 III will gain the ability to output Raw video data streams that can be encoded as ProRes RAW if the cameras are connected to an Atomos Ninja V external recorder. The output is 12-bit with Olympus saying it allows ‘exposure adjustment,’ which we’re hoping means the resulting ProRes RAW footage will be compatible with a full range of post-shot adjustments.

These two cameras will also gain a ‘Focus Indicator Display’ mode that provides a focus guide, based on phase-detection distance information, when manually focusing.

In addition, the E-M1X, E-M1 III, E-M1 II and E-M5 III will all receive an update to improve the image stabilization performance while shooting video. The company explicitly mentions panning, which suggests it will be better at distinguishing between accidental and intentional camera movement. Finally, the firmware will provide all four cameras with the ability to use focus-stacking mode with the new 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO lens.

Introducing Bird Detection for Intelligent Subject Detection Autofocus

OM-D E-M1X Firmware Version 2.0 with Bird Detection

Bird detection has been added to Intelligent Subject Detection Autofocus, and can recognize a variety of birds of all sizes. When using this version of firmware, the camera focuses primarily on the bird’s eye and switches to detect and track the bird’s head or body if its eye is not detected. This feature performs well even in birds’ natural habitats, where trees, plants and other obstructions tend to come between photographer and subject, allowing the photographer to concentrate on framing. This functionality can be used in conjunction with Pro Capture, which is also a popular feature for photographing birds. Pro Capture mode virtually eliminates shutter lag and reaction time by recording sequential frames before the shutter release is pressed fully, and ensures the camera never misses decisive moments, as when a bird takes flight or captures its prey. Birds are detected across the entire AF coverage area when shooting with all M.Zuiko® Digital lenses, inclusive of super telephoto zoom lenses. The functionality works even at the periphery of the screen, offering a greater level of freedom for framing.

RAW Video Data Output to the Atomos Ninja V HDR Monitor Recorder

4K 30P/25P/24P and Cinema 4K 24P video recorded on the OM-D E-M1X can be output as 12-bit RAW data and recorded in ProRes RAW format on the Atomos Ninja V HDR monitor recorder, enabling advanced professional video production post-processing tasks, such as adjusting exposure and color grading of recorded footage. New DJI Mavic Air 2 firmware update includes remote control compatibility with Mini 2

Recently, DJI announced the Mini 2 drone. While it improves greatly upon its predecessor, the Mavic Mini, it won’t exactly replace the Mavic Air 2. To ensure that they can charge roughly $ 300 USD more, DJI has continued to improve upon the drone that falls below its Mavic 2 Pro and is a step above the Mini 2.

With firmware version v01.00.0460, DJI has added support so that the Mavic Air 2’s remote controller can also be used with the Mini 2. It is recommended that DJI’s Fly app v1.2.0, or higher, is installed on your smartphone. Another important update, especially for those flying near buildings or other tall structures, is the default Return to Home (RTH) altitude has increased to 100 meters (400 ft.).

This update also optimizes the downward vision positioning system by increasing the altitude limit to 30 meters (100 ft.). Users can also expect a quieter start-up after powering on their drone.

One question remains: since the Mini 2 also includes OccuSync 2.0 transmission technology, will it eventually be compatible with DJI’s Smart Controller? Time will tell. Firmware v1.1.1 makes the Canon R6’s video much more usable

Alongside DPReviewTV’s re-assessment of the Canon EOS R6, we conducted some simple side-by-side testing of the latest firmware, in comparison to the original version. Our original tests showed that the R6 would deliver the promised amount of recording time in fairly challenging conditions, but that it would then struggle to recover.

Over the following weeks, diligent testing by users revealed Canon was factoring-in the initial temperature of the camera when determining how long to let it record for, but then was calculating recovery times without much consideration of internal or ambient temperature. This meant that the camera would take a long time to recover its recording capability and there was nothing you could do to speed up the process.

This could all be side-stepped if your shooting allows the use of an external recorder, but this somewhat undermines the convenience of the R6 as a stills-and-video tool.

At the time of release, Canon’s description of this firmware update was:

  • Temperature detection and shooting time control in video shooting have been improved. In addition, the total shooting time when the short-time recording and power-on/off are performed repeatedly at room temperature is improved.

Our more recent testing supports this claim. A camera running firmware v1.1.1 was able to record for longer and, most critically, recover recording time faster than the example running firmware v1.0.

This makes the R6 a much more usable camera for stop/start video capture.

Of course the downside of the camera taking ambient and internal temperature into account to a greater degree is that its behavior is now more temperature sensitive and hence less predictable. However, this is much more consistent with how most other cameras work.

Testing two R6’s side-by-side, one with the previous firmware, one with the latest.

The original firmware was very dependable: you’d tend to get 40 minutes of 4K/24, 25 or 30p, as promised, but with dependably long recovery times. This meant that you were much more likely to hit that 40 minute limit than with other cameras that, on paper, promised less recording time (because they’d do a better job of recovering between clips).

With the latest firmware, in moderate and room-temperature shooting at least, the R6 is much better at recovering, which means you hit the temperature limit much less readily, particularly if you shoot clips of video and have some time between each one.

The R6 is generally a more usable camera for anyone shooting sequences of multi-minute clips

However, given we’re experiencing an early cold snap in Seattle, we can’t comment on how the camera will do when the summer comes.

Of course none of this is much help for, say, wedding photographers, for whom it may not be possible to turn a camera off for several minutes between clips, but it means the R6 is a much more usable camera for anyone shooting sequences of multi-minute clips.

Panasonic firmware shares more features across S1, S1R, S1H and S5

Panasonic has announced an extensive series of feature-enhancing firmware updates for its S1, S1R, S1H and S5 full-frame mirrorless cameras, along with the G100 Micro Four Thirds model. All five updates will become available on November 24, 2020.

The updates vary between models, often adding features and improvements from the other cameras. For example, the boost in AF performance for the S1H, S1R and S1 brings them inline with the performance of the S5. Meanwhile, the S1R, S1 and S5 gain the ability to specify shutter speed and gain (rather than shutter speed and ISO), an option originally reserved for the S1H.

Notable improvements include the S1R gaining 10-bit HLG capture and 4:2:2 10-bit output of 50p and 60p 4K footage over HDMI.

The S5 gains a series of DCI ‘cinema 4K’ (4096 x 2160) shooting modes. The S5 also gains the ability to stream Raw footage, which can be encoded as ProRes RAW using an Atomos external recorder. The S5 also gets Master Pedestal (black level) control and a Vector Scope display mode.

S1 users, in addition to the promise of firmware v1.6 in November, will gain a series of 12-bit Raw video output options, in a v2.0 update promised for 2021. This will also add the ability to explicitly control the Dual ISO behavior, along with a host of 10-bit internal capture modes which were previously only available on the S1H. This will include V-Log options for users who have bought the SFU2 Log upgrade.

Panasonic is also pleased to announce the future firmware update exclusively for
S1(Ver.2.0) to further enhance the functions and performance in the first half of 2021.

  1. Firmware Update Programs to be released on 24 November 2020

    • Improved AF performance S1H S1R S1
      LUMIX’s state-of-the-art AF technology and performance of the new LUMIX S5 will also be available on the S1R, S1H and S1. The upgraded AF notably excels in detection of human and its movement. In addition to the eye, face, body the head is also separately recognized by real-time detection technology to provide even more precise focusing. The camera keeps tracking the subject person even if he/she moves quickly, turns his/her back to the camera, tilts his/her head or moves far away from the camera. In addition, improvements to the DFD technology has enhanced AFC, which also enables users to keep tracking small or fast-moving subjects to capture them in crisp focus. Users can take these advantages in both still and video recording.
    • Human/Animal recognition can be set ON or OFF when the AF mode is set to [1-Area] or [1-Area+]. S1H S1R S1 S5

    DC-G100 Firmware Version 1.1

    • The camera will be compatible with LUMIX Webcam Software (Beta).

  2. Firmware Update Program to be released in the first half of 2021 DC-S1 Firmware Version 2.0
    To meet the demands of users, the LUMIX S1 will continue to evolve. [5.9K] / [4K] /
    [Anamorphic (4:3) 3.5K] 12-bit RAW video data can be output over HDMI, thus, the RAW video data can be recorded on Atomos Ninja V*1 *2 . Also, 5.9K/C4K internal video recording, 4K60p/50p 4:2:0 10bit recording as well as Anamorphic mode and Timecode will also be available*2 . The firmware itself enables manual setting of Dual Native ISO.

*2 To activate functions related to MOV and V-Log video recording, a Software Upgrade Key DMW-SFU2 (sold separately) is required. Users who already have DMW-SFU2 do not need to purchase extra DMW-SFU2.

Panasonic further addresses technology development and its achievement shall be applied not only to the new products but also to those already released via firmware update.

Hasselblad firmware update adds Distance Meter, improved Interval Timer features to its X1D II 50C, 907X 50C cameras

Hasselblad has released a pair of firmware updates for its X1D II 50C and 907X 50C medium format cameras that adds, amongst other improvements, an on-screen distance scale for measuring focus and improved intervalometer features.

Firmware version 1.4.0 for both the X1D II 50C and 907X 50C adds a new Distance Scale feature that effectively recreates the distance scale that’s traditionally on the lens and overlays it on the liveview display. It can be set to metric or imperial units and will work with any XCD lens updated to the latest firmware.

Hasselblad has also improved the Interval Timer feature, adding the option to capture up to 1,000 frames (previously, the limit was 99 frames or ‘No Limit.’ When shooting between 2 and 25 frames you can select any number; from 25–100 you can select intervals of five; and from 100–1,000 you can select intervals of 50. The ‘No Limit’ option also remains.

Hasselblad has also added the ability to meter the exposure for every shot. Previously, the first image captured served as the baseline by which all subsequent images’ exposure settings were shot at. Now, the cameras will be able to meter for each individual frame, which should help when capturing timelapses in varying lighting conditions.

The firmware updated also improves compataibility with Hasselblad’s Phocus Mobile 2 app, improving live view quality and addressing a bug that prevented the camera from changing its white balance settings when changed inside the app. Other changes include an array of unspecified bug fixes.
