Photographer finds 1200 rolls of unprocessed film from 1950s

One of the 66 bundles of undeveloped film, which total an estimated 1,200 rolls, all shot by a single photographer in the 1950s. Far too much for Levi Bettwieser to develop himself.  

Levi Bettwieser is the founder and film technician for The Rescued Film Project – an archive of images from ‘lost and forgotten’ rolls of film, sourced from all over the word. Last year, Bettwieser acquired 66 packages of undeveloped film from the 1950s, totaling an estimated 1,200 rolls.

Each package is made up of several rolls of undeveloped film, meticulously wrapped in aluminum foil, newspaper and athletic tape and as Bettwieser explains, ‘this is way more film than I can process myself.’ The single roll that he has developed shows some degradation but has yielded usable images. 

Blue Moon Camera in Portland has agreed to take on the task of developing the rest of the unprocessed film, but even with a discount, processing so many rolls is going to cost a lot of money. Bettwieser has launched a funding campaign on Indiegogo.com, and at time of writing, his team has raised roughly a third of the total funding goal of $ 15,000.

Study finds that yes, you can take photos and enjoy an experience too

As smartphone picture-taking has become ubiquitous, so has criticism of it. It’s become a common refrain to hear that taking pictures detracts from fully enjoying and experiencing an event, whwther that’s a concert or a papal visit. To be truly in the moment, you shouldn’t be taking photos.

Depressing stuff, but a new study presents a different view, one that photographers would probably agree with: taking photos enhances enjoyment of experiences, rather than detracting from enjoyment.

A previous and much-cited study looked at the effect of photo-taking on memory, and found that people taking photos of objects at a museum were more likely to forget what they’d seen than people who hadn’t taken photos. This new research focuses rather on enjoyment rather than recall. 

According to lead author Kristin Diehl, ‘unlike checking your email or texting, […]  photo-taking actually directs you towards the experience’.

The research mostly focuses on use of a simple camera for taking snapshots, both in real-life situations like a city bus tour, and simulated scenarios. Again and again, participants in the study who were directed to take photos reported higher enjoyment of the experience than those who could not take pictures.

Roger Cicala finds innovation sealed inside the Sony 35mm F1.4 ZA

We’ve already looked at Roger Cicala’s teardown of the Canon EF 35mm F1.4L II, where he showed it to be a heavy duty design with extensive adjustability to bring it back to spec after a period of abuse. LensRental’s look inside the Sony FE 35mm F1.4 turned up a lens designed with a radically different approach. It’s easy to over-interpret the differences and start trying to picture the different use-cases they’ve been designed for, but even if you don’t want to extrapolate so far, it’s fascinating to see how unconventional Sony’s approach is.

Taking a more linear route

The most fundamental difference Cicala highlights between the two designs is how the focus elements are moved. The Canon uses a traditional helicoid design – rotating the focus element along a helical track, in much the same way as manual focus lenses would. The Sony design instead uses a piezoelectric drive to push and pull the lens element along a rail, meaning that there’s no rotational movement occurring at all. Instead it can be shuffled back and forth in very fine increments.

Sony calls this design ‘Direct Drive SSM’ (with SSM standing for Supersonic motor), and it’s based on technology used for in-body image stabilization in Sony A-mount cameras, hinting at the speed and precision that such systems can provide. It’s distinctly different from the linear motor technology used in the FE 55mm F1.8, which you can see in operation here.

The Piezoelectric drive mechanism is fascinating, and we saw it embedded in a cut-in-half FE 35mm at CP+ last year. It involves a drive element that can be expanded or contracted by applying an electric current. Expanding it slowly moves the lens out along its mounting rail, but the connection to the rail is designed to slide in response to rapid movement, so rapidly contracting the drive element leaves the lens in the more distant position but with the drive element retracted. Repeating this pattern of slow extension and rapid contraction progressively nudges the lens away from the drive element. Pulling the lens back again involves reversing the process: rapidly expanding the drive element so that it slips through the clamp, then slowing drawing the lens back in, one step at a time.

Why do it this way? Well, it’d certainly be quiet and it allows very fast movement, giving the lens possibly the fastest focusing we’ve ever seen in this class: when paired with the a7R II’s phase-detect AF system, autofocus is quick and precise. A single element able to move quickly back and forth in tiny steps lends itself well both to contrast detection focus in video as well as being able to reverse directions when subjects erratically switch between approaching and receding.

Adding a snap to aperture-by-wire

Another interesting design detail is the switch for engaging and disengaging the stepped, clicking aperture. A weather-sealed switch pushes a small, sprung ball bearing against a series of tiny teeth, to give tactile feedback as you rotate the aperture ring. However, no other mechanical connection is engaged: the aperture is entirely controlled by-wire, with a sensor detecting movement of the aperture ring and relaying it to the aperture motor.

Locked on place

The other major difference between the Canon and the Sony is the philosophy behind lens alignment. Where the Canon had a series of shims and adjustment screws to allow the different elements to be re-aligned, and re-centered, the Sony has most of its elements glued together in one giant module. This whole module then has three shims offering only a small degree of adjustment. LensRentals’ testing of its copies suggests this adjustment isn’t sufficient to give the consistency you might hope for.

Individual replacement parts are not available for after-market repair: the only option is to slot a whole new module in, with limited adjustment to ensure its alignment within the lens barrel. This approach means Sony has a good level of control over the alignment within each module but means the lens is harder and more expensive to service if it goes out of alignment or if the front element gets scratched.

In summary

The construction and adjustment isn’t quite as extensive as in the Canon but, as Cicala highlights: nor is it in most lenses. Instead it appears Sony has designed its lens so that it’s durable and everything is fixed in place, whereas Canon has built its lens to be tough but accepted that as a photojournalist’s workhorse, it’ll need to be beaten back into shape every now and again.

it’s clear, though, that Sony has built this lens to be tough: not only is each element individually positioned, rather than being spaced apart, relative to another, but Sony has included extensive amounts of weather sealing at every step of the design (just look at the size of the rubber gaskets, in the picture above). Cicala concludes: ‘This lens has the most rubber gaskets I’ve ever seen. The weather and dust resistance in the lens itself should be superb.’

We starting to test the camera capabilities of the brand new Samsung Galaxy S4, but the guys at iFixit.com have been tearing theirs apart. The iFixit crew cracked open the S4 to see what its inner workings tell us about the latest flagship phone from Samsung, and how easily it can be repaired. The S4 came through iFixit’s teardown with flying colors, receiving an 8 out of 10 repairability score for its replaceable battery and straightforward disassembly. Frightening Archaeological Finds: 15 Odd Human Remains

What bizarre and terrifying ‘treasures’ from long-gone ancient civilizations are still hidden in crypts, caves and deep within the earth? Most archaeologists may spend their days painstakingly brushing sand off pieces of pottery, but occasionally, they unearth evidence of the darker side of humanity – cannibalism, sacrifice, mass murder, deadly paranoia about vampires and witches, and even chemical warfare. These 15 archaeological finds of ancient human remains are among the most grisly, frightening and fascinating.

Among the corpses of medieval plague victims was one very curious find: a skull with a brick shoved so forcefully between its jaws, they were broken. The technique was used on suspected vampires in Europe during this time, especially when natural biological processes after death resulted in dark blood-like liquid streaming from the mouth. Researchers have determined that not only was this elderly woman feared a vampire after her death, she may have been accused of witchcraft before she met her end. Most people didn’t live to be her age, estimated at 60-71 years, and many medieval Europeans believed that the devil gave the elderly powers to cheat death. Older women were particularly suspect because it was assumed that they had little to live for, and were vulnerable to offers of power.

Imagine opening a sarcophagus to find a mummy that seems to be screaming for all eternity. In the past, when ‘screaming mummies‘ were discovered, archaeologists assumed that they must have been buried alive or killed in some other painful manner. Now, however, they usually agree that mummies are commonly found with their jaws open due to their heads falling back after death. The most famous screaming mummy is Unknown Man E, an Egyptian mummy found in 1886, who could be the murderous son of Ramses III. Another is even more shocking, with its hands covering its face in apparent terror; it was among the remains of the Chachapoya Indians of Peru.

Evidence of a shocking massacre was discovered when archaeologists unearthed 51 thousand-year-old skulls – along with another pit containing their headless bodies – in Weymouth, UK. Found in 2009, these young male Vikings were brutally slain sometime between 910 and 1030 CE. Analysis of their teeth confirmed that they were from Scandinavia. They were likely war captives of the Anglo-Saxons, executed by having their heads hacked off.

The bones of twelve neanderthals found in a cave in Spain were cut and snapped, indicating that they were likely ‘processed’ by fellow neanderthals as food. The possible family group, which included three adult males, three adult females, three adolescents, two children and an infant, is one of the most significant examples of cannibalism among neanderthals. “There are many different markings in many different bones in all 12 individuals, including traditional cut marks to disarticulate bones and remove muscle insertions, snapping and fracturing of long bones to extract the marrow,”researcher Carles Lalueza-Fox told LiveScience.

How and why were the bones of nearly 100 infants discarded like trash in a late Roman, early Byzantine sewer beneath a bathhouse in Israel? Found in 1988 in Ashkelon, the remains indicate that the babies died before three days of age, and show no signs of disease or skeletal malformation. While scholars hypothesized that the babies were girls, since female infanticide was common during that time, tests have since shown that many were male. The reasoning behind their death is still a mystery.

The earliest archaeological evidence of leprosy is found in a 4,000-year-old skeleton unearthed in India in 2009. Leprosy is difficult to study because the bacteria that causes it is tricky to culture for research, and scientists are still unsure of exactly when and where it originated. This skeleton was not only the oldest leper ever found, it was also the first evidence of leprosy in ancient India, supporting the idea that the disease migrated between Africa and Asia during a period of urbanization, growing population density and new trade routes.

The peat bogs of northwestern Europe have turned out to be one of the richest sources of ancient human remains in the world, preserving bodies so perfectly that they sometimes still contain blood and stomach contents. ‘Bog bodies‘ such as the Grauballe Man, pictured, date from 8,000 B.C.E. to the early medieval period. It seems that these people were not buried in the peat bogs, nor did they simply die there – they died violently. Researchers believe they were most likely sacrificed, or executed as punishment for crimes or perceived flaws.

Three human skulls found in Gough’s Cave, Somerset, England were carefully worked into the shape of bowls, indicating that they were used to drink from. At 14,700 years old, these are the oldest skull cups ever discovered, and they were surrounded by other human remains that had been snapped to get to the marrow inside, suggesting cannibalism.

iFixit Tears down iPad Mini – finds it’s not easy to repair

No-one takes gadgets apart quite like the guys at iFixit.com and they’ve just got their hands on Apple’s latest tablet, the pint-sized iPad Mini. Basically an iPad 2 in a smaller form factor, the Mini goes on sale tomorrow in the US. Thanks to a whole lot of glue holding the thing together and expensive battery replacement cost, the iPad Mini earns a low repairability score of 2 out of 10 on the iFixit scale.
