Video: Billie Eilish parody music video ‘Gear Guy’ is made for filmmakers and photographers

Dave Maze, the host of YouTube channel Kinotika, is the star of a newly published parody of Billie Eilish’s ‘Bad Guy’ music video. Called ‘Gear Guy,’ this song is made for the photographers and filmmakers who are obsessed with collecting new gear.

Maze is also behind the ‘Old Towne Road’ parody video published back in September. In addition to the music video above, the parody is also available to listen to on Soundcloud. The video also stars Jake Bernal, Zach Mayfield, and Laura Altizer.

Moment launches anamorphic lens and other gear for smartphone filmmakers

Many photographers consider Moment lenses to be the best quality smartphone accessory lenses out there. Now the company returns to crowdfunding platform Kickstarter with a new product line, this time for video shooters and filmmakers rather than stills photographers.

The headline product is an anamorphic add-on lens which allows you to achieve the same super-wide look and lens flare we are used to from Hollywood movies. The lens alters the field of view of the built-in camera on your iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel device and locks onto a specific lens case.

The lens currently works with a range of video-specific apps, including Filmic Pro, but Moment still has to update its own app in order to achieve an undistorted live preview of the footage captured with the lens.

The lens is not the only new accessory for filmmakers, however. There is also a battery case for the iPhone X which can charge via the Lighting port or Qi wireless charging and comes with a dedicated camera button. Of course it’s designed to attach Moment lenses as well.

Finally, Moment also debuted a counterweight for gimbals like the DJO Osmo Mobile 2, and a lens filter mount that can be used to attach ND and other filters to any of Moment’s lenses.

All the new items can be ‘pre-ordered’ on Kickstarter, where the campaign has quickly reached astronomical levels of funding—with 21 days to go, Moment has raised over $ 800,000 against a goal of just $ 50,000. All this funding despite each item being pretty low-cost: the filter holder is yours for a $ 29 pledge, the battery case will set you back $ 79, and the lens is priced at $ 119. Shipping is scheduled for June.

Nikon looks to be positioning its D850 as a serious video rig with today’s announcement of a D850 Filmmaker’s Kit. The kit includes the camera body, three AF-S Nikkor lenses (20mm F1.8G ED, 35mm F1.8G ED, 85mm F1.8G), an Atomos Ninja Flame external recorder, ME-1 shotgun and ME-W1 wireless mics and an extra EN-EL15A battery.

Purchased separately, these items cost nearly $ 6300, so the kit’s MSRP of $ 5499 is a nice discount. The Filmmaker’s Kit will be available for purchase in late March.

Filmmaking can be expensive, so it’s fairly common to rent some of the equipment you need instead of buying it. Thanks to today’s sharing economy, that often means renting your equipment from other filmmakers instead of established rental houses.

Canon introduces Compact-Servo 70-200mm T4.4 lens for aspiring filmmakers

Canon has announced the Compact-Servo 70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S, a lens designed for small-scale filmmakers. Targeted at a similar ’emerging production’ market to Fujifilm’s recently announced MK-series cine lenses, it will offer a middle ground between the company’s photographic lenses and its high-end CN-E cinema lenses.

Unlike traditional cinema lenses it offers autofocus, auto iris and image stabilization (when used with certain Cinema EOS models), but is designed to Canon’s standards for 4K video capture. It comes with a servo unit for driving focus, iris and zoom.

The lens is scheduled for availability later in 2017; no price was given at the time of announcement.

The new COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Telephoto Zoom Lens is a 4K lens and features autofocus and optical image stabilization (with compatible camera models*), resulting in high-resolution imagery, with the ability to assist filmmakers in capturing the shot they envisioned. Compatible with EF-mount Super 35mm large-format cameras, the lens maintains brightness across the entire focal range at T4.4 (equal to f/4.0). The lens is also compatible with both the Canon EF 1.4x III (expanded focal range of 98-280mm) and EF 2x III (expanded focal range of 140mm-400mm) external extenders, expanding the focal range of the lens for additional versatility when the shooting situation calls for it.

For added convenience, cinematographers can control many of the features of the lens in a variety of ways through the EF-mount communication, including Dual Pixel CMOS AF, push auto iris, record start and stop and remote lens control via the camera with an optional remote control, compensation for chromatic aberration** and peripheral illumination, metadata acquisition, and selection of T-number display**.

The lens comes equipped with a Servo Drive Unit, which provides seamless switching between servo and manual modes, allowing videographers motorized control of focus, zoom, and iris settings. The Servo Drive Unit is compatible with broadcast style industry-standard lens controllers including Canon’s ZSD-300D zoom demand and FPD-400D focus demand. Like the Canon COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens, the ZSG-C10 accessory grip will be compatible with the new COMPACT-SERVO 70-200mm Telephoto Zoom lens, further enhancing ease-of-use for ENG and “run-and-gun” style shooters. The grip connects to the lens through a 20-pin cable, allowing a variety of lens functions to be controlled from the grip, including zooming via a rocker switch, one-shot AF and the starting and stopping of a recording. When the lens and grip are being used with the EOS C100 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C700 Cinema Cameras, users will also have the ability to control the zoom and iris from the camera’s grip unit.

Photojournalists and documentary filmmakers ask camera manufacturers for encryption

Over 150 photojournalists, filmmakers and media professionals have signed an open letter addressed to major camera manufacturers, asking them to add encryption to their products. While many of the storage devices and computers photographers use to store files offer encryption, the cameras themselves do not. 

The letter points out that when a photojournalist’s camera or memory card is stolen or confiscated, which happens regularly, their footage and images are left exposed and vulnerable, potentially putting the photographer and their sources in real danger. Encryption is commonplace in smartphones, messaging apps and many operating systems, but not in image capture devices or memory cards.

The letter is addressed to Canon, but the Freedom of the Press Foundation says they’ve sent similar copies to Nikon, Fujifilm, Sony and Olympus. You can see the body of the letter below; head to Freedom of the Press Foundation’s website to see the full list of signees. 

Dear Canon,

We, the undersigned documentary filmmakers and photojournalists, are writing to urge your company to build encryption features into your still photo and video camera products. These features, which are currently missing from all commercial cameras on the market, are needed to protect our safety and security, as well as that of our sources and subjects worldwide.

Without encryption capabilities, photographs and footage that we take can be examined and searched by the police, military, and border agents in countries where we operate and travel, and the consequences can be dire.

We work in some of the most dangerous parts of the world, often attempting to uncover wrongdoing in the interests of justice. On countless occasions, filmmakers and photojournalists have seen their footage seized by authoritarian governments or criminals all over the world. Because the contents of their cameras are not and cannot be encrypted, there is no way to protect any of the footage once it has been taken. This puts ourselves, our sources, and our work at risk.

Many technology companies have in recent years embraced encryption technology, often including it in their products and enabling it by default. Indeed, encryption has, in some sectors, become an industry-best practice. Apple’s iPhones encrypt all data stored on them by default, as do many phones running Google’s Android operating system; text messages and voice calls made with WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, and Signal are all protected using end-to-end encryption technology; and laptops and desktop computers running modern versions of Microsoft Windows and macOS encrypt all data stored by default too.

However, we face a critical gap between the moment we shoot our footage and the first opportunity to get that footage onto more secure devices.

As filmmakers and photojournalists who value our own safety and the safety of our sources and subjects, we would seek out and buy cameras that come with built-in encryption. Adding these data security features to your product line would give your company a significant competitive advantage over other camera manufacturers, none of whom currently offer this feature.

Beyond the commercial motivation for adding encryption features, we know your company has commendably committed to corporate social responsibility. Building encryption into your products is not just about helping the filmmakers and photojournalists who buy them, but about making the world a better place. As filmmakers and photojournalists, we use our lenses to hold powerful people to account — and ultimately to change society for the better. Encryption features will allow us to continue to tell the most important stories, from some of the most dangerous places in the world.

The filmmakers who took a stroll on Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic are facing jail time

Three of the four Canadian filmmakers who were caught roaming onto Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic hot spring have pled not guilty to charges of foot travel in a thermal area and disorderly conduct. Hamish McNab Campbell Cross was the only member of the group representing clothing brand High on Life to plead guilty to his charges. He’ll pay a fine of $ 8000 and accepts a five year unsupervised probation.

The remaining three have received court-appointed lawyers and may face a bench trial if they do not accept plea deals. The Jackson Hole News and Guide reports that the group’s previous attorney, who removed himself from the case due to a conflict of interest, mentioned that the US Attorney is considering jail time.
