Plane plunged 4400 feet after pilot’s camera became wedged against controls

17 Aug
Re-creation by UK Military Aviation Authority

A military pilot in the UK is reportedly facing a court martial after his camera became wedged against a military transport plane’s controls, causing it to plunge 4400ft/1.3km before the captain regained control. The Ministry of Defense is being sued over the matter, which took place in February 2014, by nine soldiers and one civil servant who were in the plane during the incident.

Per the government’s investigation of the matter, the cause was determined to be the pilot’s Nikon D5300 camera, which at some point during the flight became positioned against the plane’s steering control. When the pilot readjusted his seat position, the seat pressed the camera against the control, causing the plan to drop at a rate up to 260ft/80m per second.

According to The Times, the lawyer representing these ten individuals says they suffer PTSD as a result of the plane’s sudden descent; a total of 198 people were onboard at the time of the incident. The pilot has reportedly been charged with negligently performing a duty, perjury, and making a false record.

Gold Medal Street Art: World Record Mural in Rio Stretches 600 Feet

world record mural rio 1

Athletes aren’t the only people trying to set world records in Rio de Janeiro right now, and one artist might have nabbed the gold this week for the world’s largest mural created by a single person. Eduardo Kobra debuted ‘Etnias’ (translation “ethnicities”) along the heavily trafficked ’Olympic boulevard’, stretching an incredible 623 feet in vivid color across 32,000 square feet of a brick wall belonging to a formerly abandoned warehouse. mural portrays the faces of five indigenous men and women from five continents, including the Mursi of Ethiopia, the Kayin of Thailand, the Supi of Europe, the Tapajos from the Americas and the Huli of Papua New Guinea.

Rendered in the artist’s signature quiltwork style, with geometric shapes connecting and layered over each portrait, ‘Etnias’ is an extension of Kobra’s series ‘Peace Outlooks,’ which also includes paintings of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. Past projects in a similar tone have seen the faces of Biggie Smallz, Tupac and Bob Dylan splashed across giant surfaces in urban areas around the world.

“The five characters represent the five continents – the concept was based on the five Olympic Rings,” says Kobra in an interview with the official Rio Olympics website. “These are the indigenous people of the world. The idea behind it is that we are all one. This is the first time I have worked with ethnic people. We’ve all got the same origins so we have to get along, not only during the Olympic Games but always. We should always stand for world peace.”

“We’re living through a very confusing time with a lot of conflict. I wanted to show that everyone is united, we are all connected.”

Kobra is hoping to shatter the previous Guinness World Record held by Mexican artist Ernesto Rocha, whose Mazatlan mural completed in 2009 is just over half the size of ‘Etnias.’ Check out more photos of the mural and Kobra’s other work on his Instagram.

christo island view

Known for his work on large-scale art projects, including the world’s biggest interior art installation, artist’s latest piece features over 1,000,000 square feet (100,000 square meters) of shimmering yellow fabric, wrapped around floating docks that span for miles up to and across Lake Iseo in Italy.

Undulating with the waves, the Floating Piers project lets visitors walk between Sulzano, Monte Isola and to the island of San Paolo; the floating platforms are visible from surrounding mountains as well.

Christo conceived of the idea with his Jeanne-Claude as far back as the 1970s, exploring different potential venues for its installation. While Jeanne-Claude passed away in 2009, Christo has carried on the idea, and finally found a place for the temporary work in Northern Italy.

Many works by this long-standing pair of ambitious artists were self-funded, in part through the sales of concept drawings and models in advance.

“like all of our projects,” says Christo, “The Floating Piers absolutely free and accessible 24 hours a day, weather permitting. There are no tickets, no openings, no reservations and no owners. The Floating Piers are an extension of the street and belong to everyone.” The project opened this weekend and will run for just 16 days. Images by Wolfgang Volz.

Origami Footwear: Lightweight Lace-Free Shoes Wrap & Fit Any Feet

flexible origami shoe sole

A Japanese designer and Italian shoemaker have taken a fresh approach to athletic footwear, adapting the minimalist art of cloth wrapping to form the basis of a flexible shoe that fits any foot shape.

wrapping shoes japanese design

Masaya Hashimoto worked with Vibram, the makers of foot-shaped FiveFingers shoes (with articulated toes), to create the Furoshiki series of shoes with wrapping soles that fold around feet without needing laces (a simple hook and and loop system).

lace free sport shoes

A specially-engineered gripping system keeps the shoes in place and make it possible for the shoe to perform like ordinary footwear but with less weight and material.

The system has a number of advantages, including more flexible sizing than traditional shoes, easier packing for travel and the ability to skip socks comfortably.

From Vibram: “The concept for this type of footwear was derived from the Japanese custom of packaging items by wrapping them in cloth fabric. Furoshiki is the only sole on the market that wraps around the entire foot. Because the upper is constructed with stretch fabric, it will anatomically fit nicely on any foot type and the hook and loop closure system allows for a quick, easy fit.”

Sky Slide: L.A. Tower Adds Exterior Glass Chute 1,000 Feet Up

07 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

This undated artist's rendering provided by Overseas Union Enterprise Limited shows a glass slide 1,000 feet above the ground off the side of the U.S. Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles. The 45-foot-long attraction is part of a $ 50 million renovation that will also put a bar and open-air observation deck on the top floors of the 72-story building. (Michael Ludvik/OUE Ltd. via AP)

A new amusement offering on the 70th floor of the highest skyscraper on the West Coast is stepping up the game, going beyond glass viewing platforms, swimming pools and bridges to boast a fully-transparent outdoor slide for bold adventurers, all at a lofty 1,000-foot elevation.

Owners of the U.S Bank Tower are adding this extreme sightseeing measure to thrill (or terrify) visitors who wish to simulate the experience of jumping out of a skyscraper. The 36-foot Skyslide will take guests from the 70th down to the 69th floor.

The so-called Skyslide is part of a new observation deck expansion that will charge $ 25 per ticket, or another $ 8 to ride the side of the scraper via a trap door.

Attached by minimal metal supports, the clear glass will give stunning views of the surrounding city, at least for those brave enough to keep their eyes open on the way down. Meanwhile, on the East Coast, visitors can experience a similar thrill in slightly less overtly-dangerous environs, touring 50 years of history in 1 WTC elevator ride.

World’s Littlest Skyscraper Scam: Con Man Used Inches, Not Feet

23 Aug

[ By WebUrbanist in Culture & History & Travel. ]

world smallest high rise

Perhaps the greatest cons of all time are those that manage to hold up in court, like the case of the world’s smallest skyscraper, a building sold to investors at 480 inches tall on a blueprint that did not convert those units back into feet.

worlds smallest skyscraper texas

Built during an oil boom in Wichita Falls, Texas, the Newby-McMahon Building measures just 40 feet tall, 18 feet deep and 10 feet wide, initially featuring neither stairs nor elevators, forcing occupants to climb ladders to access upper floors. Completed in 1919, the structure was the brainchild of J.D. McMahon, petroleum landman and structural engineer, who collected $ 200,000 of investments (over $ 2 million in today’s dollars) to build a skyscraper in an area of rapid regional growth in great need of highrise office space.

plaque smallest skyscraper

The subtle genius that won his defense in the ensuing lawsuit: his floor plans, sections and elevations were all drawn to scale and clearly labeled in inches rather than feet, resulting in a building that was precisely one twelfth what its investors were expecting on all sides. McMahon began construction and before long the other stakeholders realized they were being swindled but found they had no recourse, having explicitly signed off on the drawings. The company responsible for installing an elevator backed out when they realized they were part of the scam, leaving the building without any means of transit between floors as well.

worlds littlest skyscraper con

Despite it being a folly in the eyes of its investors and being boarded up for years during the Great Depression, the structure was saved time and time again from demolition by local activists and has since housed a series of businesses within its modest-sized walls. Today it remains a historic landmark, though due to its size it does not meet classification criteria as even a highrise, let alone an atual skyscraper. Weekly Photography Challenge – Feet

08 Aug

Feet are an important part of our human body. They take us where we want to go. They hold us upright. They can be all different sizes and styles, decorated or plain, even covered in fur (think pets). But they are often overlooked in photographs or even cropped off.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Feet

This week we challenge you to go out and photograph only feet and crop off the body! They could be your own feet (foot selfie?), a friend’s, your cat’s, or a total stranger’s feet. It’s about looking at things differently and seeing something you may otherwise miss or pass over.

28 Curious Images of Feet

07 Aug

This week for an image collection I bring to you – FEET!

What can you tell about the person, their life, and their emotions by looking at their feet? What do these feet tell you?

If the eyes are the windows to the soul – what do the feet tell us?

Griddy Cities: Aerial Cyberpunk Cityscapes Shot from 7,500 Feet

23 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

aerial new york city

Flying over New York City, San Francisco and Las Vegas, this photographer has managed to both capture the essence of each city he shoots from the night sky above while also turning these places into surrealistic, faux-futuristic versions of themselves.

aerial new york

aerial vegas tilt shift

Using a full-body harness to hang out of helicopters, adventurous artist Vincent Laforet went to great lengths and high altitudes (in some cases nearly 10,000 feet) to take pictures of each setting (NYC and LV shown above, SF shown with making-of video below).

aerial downtown sf city

Special permission needed to be obtained to use flight paths normally reserved for passing planes. Tilt-shift techniques make the scale more comprehensible and help highlight areas of focus in each shot. What is truly remarkable, though, is how each set both reflects the photographer’s personal style but also very much embodies the character of each distinct location.

Park & Slide: 100,000 Sign Up to Slip 300 Feet Down a Street

urban slide go now

For one day only, residents of Bristol were offered just 360 ‘tickets to slide’ (out of nearly 100,000 applicants) down a main city street at over 10 miles an hour, surrounded by thousands of jealous onlookers.

urban installation art design

Inspired by the previous year’s heat wave and created by Luke Jerram, this participatory crowdfunded project was an inclusive, all-ages community endeavor, with sliders ranging from 5 to 73 years old.

urban slide go detail

The slide was installed on Park Street in Bristol as part of Make Sunday Special and the Bristol Art Weekender, drawing a mix of participants from within and beyond the city.

Plastic sheets over padded mats were shaped and held in place by hay bales – this simple canyon was then supplied with continuous water to ensure a smooth ride from top to bottom.

While he has no plan to tour his own creation, Luke is going to make the plans freely available for other people who want to follow suit, making public water slides in their own towns or cities around the world.
