Tamron announces a compact $549 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 for Sony E mount cameras

Tamron has announced the release of the 70–300mm F4.5–6.3 Di III RXD, a lens deemed as ‘the world’s smallest and lightest telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.’

The lens is constructed of 15 elements in 10 groups, including a low dispersion element for minimizing aberrations. Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s Rapid Extra-Silent Stepping Drive (RXD) motor technology.

Other specifications include an aperture range of F4.5 (at 70mm) to F32 (at 300mm), a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and a minimum focusing distance of 80cm (31.5”) on the wide end and 150cm (59.1”) on the tele end. Tamron says the lens is moisture-resistant thanks to an array of seals in ‘critical locations’ and its compact design measures in at just 14.7cm (5.8”) long, 77mm (3”) diameter and weighs only 545g (19.2oz).

The lens is expected to retail go on sale starting October 29 for $ 549, but Tamron notes the complexities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic could change that date.

3. The RXD stepping motor unit is exceptionally quiet?

Tamron has announced the development of what it claims is the ‘smallest and lightest’ telephoto zoom for Sony E-mount: the 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 Di III RXD.

This focal range isn’t new to Tamron, but this is the first 70-300 developed for full-frame mirrorless bodies. The lens is weather-sealed and its focus group is driven by an ‘RXD’ stepping motor. The diameter of the lens is 77mm (3″) while it weighs in at 544g (19.2oz).

The 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 Di III RXD is expected to ship this fall.

Sony APS-C shooters received some good news this summer in the form of two new E-mount lenses: the 16-55mm F2.8 and 70-350mm F4.5-6.3. Covering a 105-525mm equiv. range, the latter offers powerful reach for crop-sensor Sony cameras. We took to the high seas (okay, we rode a public ferry) to test it out on the mainland and beyond.

Hands-on with the Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 and 70-350mm F4.5-6.3

Meet the Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G

It’s been a long time since Sony released new lenses for its APS-C bodies, and the new 16-55 F2.8 G is a pleasant surprise. The lens’ zoom range is equivalent to 24-82mm on a full-frame body and fills in a gap in Sony’s lineup which, up until now, has been mostly comprised of slow kit zooms. The one exception is the Sony/Zeiss 16-70mm F4, which has a more versatile range, but is a stop slower than the new 16-55.

Given its spec, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the 16-55mm F2.8 is on the pricey side, with an MSRP of $ 1399 US. The lenses most similar to this one are the Canon EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 ($ 829 US, but not as wide) and Fujifilm 16-55mm F2.8 ($ 1199 US).

Meet the Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G

The 16-55mm F2.8 G has a total of 17 elements, including two aspherical, two advanced aspherical and three ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses. It has 9 rounded aperture blades, which Sony (naturally) says produces beautiful bokeh. Sony uses a Nano AR coating to reduce ghosting and flare, and the front element has a fluorine coating to repel oil and water. Speaking of water, the 16-55 F2.8 is dust and moisture resistant.

Sony uses an ‘XD’ linear motor to drive the focusing group, which is the same type of motor found its more expensive G Master lenses. The lens can focus down to 0.33m (1.1ft), with a maximum magnification of 0.66x. The manual focus ring has a linear response, which videographers will appreciate.

Meet the Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G

As you can see from the above photo, the 16-55mm is remarkably compact for a fast zoom, even one for crop-sensor cameras. At wide-angle, the lens is 10cm (3.9″) long and it does’t extend that much farther at full telephoto (Sony does not publish the actual length). It weighs in at 494g (1.1lbs), which is more than 100 grams lighter than the Canon EF-S 17-55mm F2.8.

Just under the ‘G’ is the focus hold button – its function can be customized on the camera. Over to the right is the AF/MF switch.

Going long: the Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS

Sony also announced a lens for the wildlife photographers out there, in the form of the 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS. The lens has an equivalent focal length of 105-525mm when mounted on an APS-C body, which is an incredibly versatile range, though its slow maximum aperture range makes this lens best suited for shooting outdoors. For those wondering if they can stretch the focal length out even further using a teleconverter, the answer is ‘no’.

The 70-350 has a total of 19 elements, which include 1 aspherical and 3 ED lenses. As with the 16-55, the 70-350 uses an XD linear motor to quietly drive the focusing group. There are 7 circular aperture blades on the 70-350.

Image stabilization is a must on lenses like these, and the 70-350 has it, though Sony doesn’t publish any estimates on how many stops of shake reduction the lens offers.

Going long: the Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS

Despite its focal length, the 70-350 is remarkably compact. When collapsed it’s 142mm (5.6″) long, and is of reasonable length even at full telephoto. It weighs in at just 625g (1.4lbs). The lens is resistant to dust and moisture.

As with the 16-55, the 70-350 has a customizable focus hold button and an AF/MF switch. There’s also a switch for turning OSS (Sony-speak for image stabilization) on and off, and a zoom lock switch that’s not visible in this photo.

The 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS will set you back $ 1000, which isn’t a bad deal considering that the FE 70-300 F4.5-5.6 G OSS lens sells for just under $ 1200.

Wrap up

After a long drought, it’s nice to see Sony releasing APS-C lenses again, especially given the rate at which they still release a6000-series bodies. While everyone likes a relatively compact superzoom lens, it’s great that Sony finally released a fast lens that can serve as a nice replacement to the slow, plasticky kit lenses that often come bundled.

Sony releases two new APS-C E-mount lenses: 16-55mm F2.8 and 70-350mm F4.5-6.3

Sony has unveiled two new APS-C lenses at an event in New York today: the E 16-55mm F2.8 G and E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS. Both lenses offer dust and weather sealing, and use XD linear motors – a first for Sony’s APS-C lens lineup.

The 16-55mm offers a 24-82.5mm equiv. range, with an overall compact design – it weighs 17.5oz / 494g and measures 100mm in length. It provides a minimum focus distance of 0.33m / 1ft, and will go on sale in October for $ 1400.

The E 70-350mm provides a 105-525mm equiv. view, with stabilization built in. It’s also relatively compact for a lens of its telezoom class – it measures 142mm and weighs 22oz/625g. It will ship in November for $ 1000.

Sigma issues product advisory for its 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 and 70-200mm F2.8 Sports lenses

Sigma has issued a lens product advisory for its 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM and 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM lenses.

According to the advisory, posted below in its entirety, Sigma has ‘found a phenomenon whereby when pressing the shutter button on the camera body, it may occasionally stop operating and not respond to the reoperation.’

Due to this ‘phenomenon’ (someone’s been looking at Canon’s product advisories), Sigma says it will offer free lens firmware updates free of charge to customers with affected products within the following serial number ranges:

Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Sports for Sigma, Canon EF and Nikon F Mount

Serial No.53824160 or earlier

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Sports for Sigma, Canon EF and Nikon F Mount

Serial No.53846990 or earlier

Sigma notes its USB Dock can’t be used for this firmware update ‘as it requires an adjustment to optimize each lens individually.’ So, if you’re noticing your lens having this issue and it falls within the serial numbers, Sigma requests you contact an authorized Sigma subsidiary/distributor who will then direct you to take the proper steps to get the issue fixed. You can find a full list on Sigma’s World Network webpage.

We spoke with a technician at Sigma America who said lenses that aren’t experiencing the issue don’t need to be sent in at the time and in the event a lens still under warranty does have the issue occur down the road, Sigma will still provide the firmware update free of charge.

Sigma has also noted that some products within the serial number ranges provided have already had their firmware updated. As shown in the above graphic, units with a black dot sticker above the barcode of the box have already been updated.

The 28mm F1.4 DG and 40mm F1.4 DG are both part of the company’s premium ‘Art’ range that prioritize image quality over price and weight. These two lenses will also be available for the Sony E mount. The new lenses help round-out the series, which now includes a range of prime lenses extending from the 14mm F1.8 DG HSM up to the 135mm F1.8 DG.

The 28mm F1.4 DG adds a semi-wide option to Sigma’s impressive range of ‘Art’ prime lenses.
The 28mm F1.4 DG | Art has a 77mm filter thread, matching that of the 24mm F1.4.
The 40mm F1.4 DG | Art is a near perfect ‘normal’ lens: a close match for the diagonal length of a full frame sensor. It’s been a historically popular focal length, so we’re pleased to see its return.
The Sigma 40mm F1.4 DG | Art has an 82mm filter thread.

In addition, Sigma has introduced a redesigned, stabilized 70-200mm F2.8. The 70-200mm F2.8 DG OIS is, as you’d expect, part of the company’s Sport range of optics and is likely to offer a less-expensive alternative to OEM 70-200s. We will, of course, be testing its performance as soon as one becomes available.

Finally, Sigma has announced the 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OIS, a monster telephoto lens, also part of its Sport range. Despite the sport designation, we suspect the lens will be used more for birding and airshow shooting.

The Sigma 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG | Sport is a substantial beast, even at its 60mm setting.
But that’s nothing compared to seeing it at full stretch. It certainly lives up to the ‘Bigma’ nickname of its predecessor.

As you’d expect, it features a focus limiter, OIS control switch. In addition, there’s a ‘Custom mode switch’ that can be used in conjunction with the Sigma USB Dock to access customized adjustments of the lens’s focus and stabilizer behavior.

It features water- and oil-repellent coating on the front lens element and its overall dust- and splash-proof structure ensures excellent performance even in the most challenging shooting conditions. Sigma 40mm F1.4 DG HSM Art
The 40mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is Sigma’s first lens developed originally to live up to the sought-after angle of view and performance standard for a benchmark cine lens. This lens effectively arranges three FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements to correct axial chromatic aberration and magnification chromatic aberration.
