The Tamron 35-150mm F2.8-4 is being marketed as a dedicated portrait lens, offering focal lengths appropriate for both traditional long lens portraiture as well as wider-angle environmental portraits and lifestyle shots.

Tamron announces new 35-150mm F2.8-4 lens for Canon, Nikon cameras

Tamron has announced the 35-150mm F2.8-4 Di VC OSD lens for Canon EF and Nikon F mounts.

The lens, which Tamron says is a ‘dedicated portrait lens,’ is constructed of 19 elements in 14 groups including three Low Dispersion elements (LD), three hybrid aspherical elements and a features Tamron’s Broad-Band Anti-Reflection (BBAR) coating throughout the lens to reduce ghosting and flares. Its maximum aperture range is F2.8 through F4 while its minimum aperture range is F16 through F22, depending on what focal length the lens is set to, and it features a nine blade aperture diaphragm.

Autofocus on the lens is powered by Tamron’s Optimized Silent Drive (OSD) DC motor and the image stabilization is done with Tamron’s Vibration Compensation (VC) technology, which is CIPA-rated for up to five additional stops of stability.

The lens features a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7in) across the entire zoom range, a 77mm filter thread and a fluorine coating on the front lens element to protect against water and oil. The lens measures in at 124.4mm (4.9in) long and weighs 790g (27.9oz) for the Nikon F mount version, and measures 126.8mm (5in) long and 796g (28.1oz) for the Canon EF version. Tamron’s TAP-in ConsoleTM can be used with this lens to update the lens’ firmware and make fine adjustments to the autofocus and vibration compensation motors inside.

The Tamron 35-150mm F2.8-4 is currently available for pre-order at B&H for $ 799 (Canon EF, Nikon F).

Tamron SP 35mm F1.4, 35-150mm F2.8-4 and E-mount 17-28mm F2.8 III arriving mid-2019

Tamron has announced three new full-frame lenses slated to launch in the middle of 2019: an SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD and 35-150mm F2.8-4 Di VC OSD for DSLRs, as well as an ultra-wide 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD for Sony E-mount cameras.

The SP 35mm F1.4 become’s the company’s fastest current lens, joining the existing 35mm F1.8 in Tamron’s high-end SP line. Calling it “the embodiment of all optical technology and manufacturing knowhow Tamron has developed to date,” the company isn’t revealing much more detail – only that it will offer fast, high-precision autofocus.

The Tamron 35-150mm F2.8-4 is designed as a compact, do-it-all zoom and is equipped with stabilization. The lens offers a minimum subject distance of 45cm / 17.7in across the entire zoom range, and low dispersion glass elements aim to keep optical aberration under control.

For Sony a7-series shooters, Tamron offers a 17-28mm F2.8 with a notably small diameter and 67mm filter size. It’s equipped with a stepping motor (denoted as RXD or Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) to boost its appeal to video as well as stills shooters.

Pricing isn’t available at this time; Tamron plans to launch all three lenses in mid-2019.

Tamron announces the development of three lenses—two for full-frame DSLRs and one for full-frame mirrorless cameras

February 20, 2019, Saitama, Japan – Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Ajisaka), a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the development of two new lenses for full-frame DSLR cameras—the 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043) zoom lens and the SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045) fixed focal lens; and a new high-speed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras—the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046).

Tamron will display these new lenses at CP+ 2019, the World Premiere show for camera and photo imaging, beginning February 28 through March 3, 2019 at Pacifico Yokohama and at the Wedding and Portrait Professionals International (WPPI), February 27 through March 3, 2019 in Las Vegas.

The lenses are expected to launch in the middle of 2019.

Fast compact Portrait Zoom breaks new ground: 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043)

The new compact Model A043 is designed for fast handling and easy transport and features a zoom that extends from 35mm to 150mm, incorporating the 85mm focal length (often regarded as optimum for portrait shooting). It offers a fast F/2.8 aperture at the wide-angle end while maintaining a bright F/4 at the telephoto end. For close-focusing, the MOD (Minimum Object Distance) is 17.7 in across the entire zoom range. The Tamron 17-35mm F2.8-4 Di OSD is a compact and light-weight lens for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLRs. This wide angle zoom features a nearly-silent AF motor and coatings to repel water and grime. We took it on a grand tour of Seattle’s best tourists destinations and found it makes a pleasant, albeit wide, walking around lens.

Tamron introduces affordable 17-35mm F2.8-4 full-frame lens for Canon and Nikon

Tamron has introduced its 17-35mm F2.8-4 Di OSD lens for full-frame Canon and Nikon bodies. This compact lens, which weighs just 460g (16.2oz), features 15 elements, including low-dispersion and glass-molded aspherical elements. Both ‘BBAR’ and fluorine coatings are employed, with the latter helping to fingerprints and moisture from adhering to this weather-sealed lens. The Optimized Silent Drive motor promises ‘excellent AF speed and drive noise reduction,’ according to Tamron.

The 17-35mm F2.8-4 Di OSD will be available in early September for Nikon FX bodies, with a Canon EF model to follow later. It will be priced at a very reasonable $ 599.

Tamron Announces the Smallest, Lightest Ultra-Wide-Angle Zoom Lens in its Class

A sophisticated balance of outstanding optics and matchless mobility

August 6, 2018, Commack, New York— Tamron announces the launch of a new ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, the 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037), for 35mm full-frame DSLR cameras. The vision behind the Model A037 is that of an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that has a separate concept from SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A012), with superb image quality and easy portability. At just 3.5 in in length and 16.2 oz. in weight, it is the smallest and lightest in its class. The focal length ranges from an ultra-wide 17mm that is suitable for professional landscape photography to a standard 35mm perfect for snapshot photography. As for F-stops, the wide-angle end is a large aperture F/2.8, and at the telephoto end is a fast F/4. The Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating help to enhance the user’s photographic experience. For those looking to try out an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for the first time, as well as having a lens that is easily portable, the A037 is the definitive choice. The lens will be available in Nikon mount on September 4, 2018 at a suggested retail price of $ 599. The launch of the Canon mount model will be announced at a later date.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

1. High-performance imaging for shooting vast landscapes in sharp detail
The optical construction (15 elements in 10 groups) uses four LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements to minimize axial chromatic aberrations that can occur with ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses. With two properly positioned GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lenses, distortion and other aberration can be satisfactorily corrected as well. Being the smallest and lightest in its class and dedicated to high quality imaging, the engineers have paid particular attention to size. The lens has also been carefully designed to allow peripheral point image reproducibility and thereby facilitate a high degree of sharpness and contrast. The Minimum Object Distance (MOD) for the entire zoom range is a short 11 in., so background blurring is still possible when opening the aperture and approaching the subject close-up with this ultra-wide-angle zoom.

2. Advanced coating technology along with proprietary ghosting analysis simulation technology enabled the high level of backlighting control
Resistance to backlighting is extremely important for wide-angle lenses as they are often subjected to strong light sources. The Model A037 has a high level optical construction that repeatedly employs comprehensive ghosting analysis simulation. The BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating is highly effective in reducing reflection, allowing ghosting and flare throughout the entire zoom range to be controlled.

3. OSD (Optimized Silent Drive) enables both excellent AF speed and drive noise reduction
The AF drive system employs an OSD (Optimized Silent Drive) to ensure quiet operation. Through the innovative optimization of the system that includes AF system speed reduction gear, Tamron could greatly reduce the drive noise in comparison to conventional AF types with built-in DC motors. AF performance and speed have also been vastly improved. Thus, even if silence is required, AF can be employed without having to worry at all about noise creation. The Model A037 can provide superlative AF precision for exact focus even when shooting moving objects, as well as outstanding trackability.

4. Circular aperture to produce a smooth-edged bokeh
A 7-blade diaphragm is configured to retain a smooth, circular-shaped aperture opening even when stopped down by two stops from the wide-open aperture. This produces a smooth-edged bokeh in background light spots and avoids rugged aperture geometry.

5. Moisture-Resistant Construction
Seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops to provide Moisture-Resistant Construction. This feature affords an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

6. Fluorine Coating
The surface of the front element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The front surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance. The coating also provides an enhanced level of durability, and will sustain its effectiveness for years.

7. Compatible with TAMRON TAP-in ConsoleTM, an optional accessory
The new A037 is compatible with the optional TAMRON TAP-in Console, an optional accessory product that provides a USB connection to a personal computer, enabling users to easily update a lens’s firmware as well as customize features including fine adjustments to the AF.

Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm F2.8-4 Yellowstone Sample Gallery

The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm F2.8-4 is a powerful – and portable – telezoom for Micro Four Thirds cameras, providing the equivalent of a 100-400mm focal length range. On paper, this compact stabilized zoom is perfect for wildlife photography, in environments where large, heavy lenses and tripods aren’t always practical.

CP+ 2018: Hands on with the Panasonic Leica 50-200mm F2.8-4 ASPH

The Panasonic Leica DG Vario 50-200mm F2.8-4 ASPH is the third and final lens in the company’s lineup of high-end variable aperture zooms, which was announced back in CES 2017. Alongside the 8-18mm F2.8-4 and 12-60mm F2.8-4, users have a total equivalent focal range of 16-400mm with this series. As expected, the 50-200mm F2.8-4 has similar styling and design cues to its siblings, and feels every bit as premium as the Leica name would imply.

Like the 12-60mm F2.8-4, the 50-200mm F2.8-4 zooms externally via a zoom ring placed closer to the camera body than the focus ring. Even on this pre-production sample, both rings are well-damped, and the all-metal body feels extremely solid.

Despite its fairly compact size, the 50-200mm F2.8-4 has a complex optical design. There are 21 elements in 15 groups, which includes two Ultra Extra-low Dispersion lenses (that’s a mouthful), two Extra-low Dispersion lenses and two aspherical lenses.

As with the rest of the range, the 50-200mm F2.8-4 is fully weather-resistant. There’s a rubber gasket around the lens mount, and the lens is designed to stand up to inclement weather but is obviously not designed to be submersible in water.

Additionally, the 50-200mm F2.8-4 is compatible with both 1.4X and 2.0X teleconverters from Panasonic, offering either a 560mm or 800mm equivalent maximum focal length, respectively.

The Panasonic Leica 50-200mm F2.8-4 comes with optical stabilization and is compatible with newer Panasonic models’ Dual I.S. mode. This means the stabilizer in this lens can work in tandem with the sensor-shift stabilization in camera bodies to further combat hand shake.

We’re excited to get a production copy of the 50-200mm F2.8-4 back to the DPReview offices for testing as soon as we can; both the 8-18mm and 12-60mm F2.8-4 lenses have impressed us with the quality of their build as well as the quality of the imagery they produce. To be sure, these are premium-priced lenses, but we also think they feel and perform like premium products should.

The Panasonic Leica DG Vario 50-200mm F2.8-4 ASPH will be available in June for an MSRP of $ 1700.

Panasonic has announced the second member of its Leica DG Vario-Elmarit F2.8-4 series of lenses: an ultra-wide 8-18mm (16-36mm equivalent) that offers fields of view ranging from as wide as 107 degrees down to 62 degrees.

The lens’s metal construction feels sturdy, with a smooth zoom action. It is dust and splash-proof, and freeze-proof down to -10?.

The optical design comprises 15 elements in 10 groups. To combat chromatic aberration and spherical distortion the lens features an aspherical extra-low dispersion element, three aspherical elements, two extra-low dispersion elements and one ultra high refractive index element.

When zooming, the front element moves back and forth, but the movement is inside the barrel. This keeps the overall length of the lens at a constant 88mm (~3.5 inches). The lens’s construction ensures ‘barycentric stability’, which means that whatever is in the center of the image at one focal length remains exactly centered as the lens is zoomed in and out. This is especially important for video work.

The focus drive can use data read out from the sensor at 240 fps, assisting the contrast detect autofocus system in Panasonic cameras in taking measurements quickly.

Here’s the lens next to the first member of the F2.8-4 lineup, the 12-60mm. Both feature a micro-step drive system in the aperture control to allow the camera to smoothly open and close the aperture. The 8-18 lacks image stabilization, so it loses the switch to turn it on and off, but otherwise the two have a very similar external appearance.

Compared to the older 7-14mm F4, the new lens is bigger, but doesn’t gain a whole lot of extra heft. Even without a built-in hood it is longer and wider, but at 315 grams (0.7lb) it only weighs in at 15 grams more than the 7-14mm.

With the included lens hood installed its increase in size over the 7-14mm with its built-in hood is a bit more apparent, thanks to the 8-18 gaining an extra stop of light on the wide end, and a bit more zoom range on the long end.

When mounted on a camera like the GH5, the lens feels as light and easy to use as the 7-14mm thanks to there being virtually no weight difference between the two. The black paintwork suits the GH5 nicely as well.

Leica announces price and availability of 90-280mm F2.8-4 zoom for SL camera

Leica has announced the price of its second lens for the new SL system and says it will go on sale within the next couple of weeks. The Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm F2.8-4 is set to cost £4650/$ 6395, and will join the existing Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm F2.8-4 ASPH standard zoom lens that was released with the SL body.

The 90-280mm F2.8-4 was announced at the same time the SL camera was launched, as was a Leica Summilux-SL 1:1, 4/50mm ASPH which is due for release at the end of this year – possibly around the time of the Photokina show in Germany.

This latest lens is claimed to offer very fast AF, as well as 3.5-stops of optical image stabilization. Sealed against the weather and dust, the lens features a closest focusing range of 0.6-1.4m and can manage a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4.8, so Leica says it is suitable for close-up work as well as for shooting at normal distances.

Sales of the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm F2.8-4 will begin on 24th March. For more information see the Leica website.

Leica Camera has today announced the latest addition to the Leica SL-System lens portfolio: the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4.
 
Available from 24 March 2016, this fast telephoto zoom lens offers a range of focal lengths that follows on directly from the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–90 mm f/2.8–4 ASPH., which launched with the SL camera at the end of last year. Together, these two lenses cover focal lengths spanning 24 to 280mm, providing the versatility to shoot a multitude of subjects and situations – from close-ups to travel and sports photography.
 
The Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 is characterised by its incredibly high speed and offers outstanding optical and mechanical precision. Its integrated optical image stabilisation (OIS) enables exposure times to be increased by up to 3.5 stops, and guarantees shake-free hand-held photography even at telephoto settings.
 
Furthermore, this exceptional zoom lens features an entirely new design, with dual internal focusing that ensures extremely fast and quiet autofocus, and delivers consistently impressive imaging performance at distances from infinity to its close focusing limit.
 
With a close focusing distance of 0.6 metres at 90mm and 1.4 metres at 280mm, and a reproduction ratio of 1:4.8 to 1:5, this versatile lens is particularly useful for close-up photography.
 
As with all Leica lenses, the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 was designed and developed by Leica’s optical specialists in Wetzlar, Germany, combining outstanding optical expertise, cutting-edge technology and premium materials – guaranteeing the consistently high quality that Leica photographers have come to expect. The design of the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 comprises 23 elements (in seven moving groups), seven of which are made from glass with anomalous partial dispersion, ensuring minimal chromatic aberration. The movement of the two focusing elements is provided by newly developed drive technology with linear positioning of the lenses by stepping motors.
 
This means the overall length of the lens does not change when either focusing or zooming. In addition, the lens hood supplied with the lens suppresses undesirable reflections and stray light, and prevents the risk of flare.
 
Furthermore, the Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 is sealed against dust and splash-proof, to protect it from the elements.
 
The Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 features a detachable tripod plate to connect the lens to a tripod for easier handling. Its ergonomic design makes the lens easier to carry by hand and also allows the attachment of a lens belt. A lockable rotating tripod collar ensures the lens can be fixed at any angle, and features detents every 90 degrees for rapid switching from landscape to portrait format.
 
The current Leica SL-System portfolio will be extended later this year with the addition of the Leica Summilux-SL 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. prime lens (available in Q4 2016). Furthermore, the extensive compatibility of the Leica SL-System gives photographers access to the majority of Leica lenses ever produced. For example, all Leica T lenses can be mounted on the Leica SL without an adapter, while the M-Adapter T enables the use of almost all Leica M-Lenses constructed since 1954. In addition, Leica S-Lenses can be mounted with the S-Adapter L (available in May 2016), and the forthcoming R-Adapter (available Q3 2016) will allow Leica R-System lenses to be used with the SL camera.
 
Availability and pricing
 
The APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8-4 is scheduled to be available in the UK from authorised Leica stockists from 24 March 2016, at a suggested retail price of £4,650 including VAT.
