Eye-Fi releases Mac software to extend SD card functionality past End of Life date

11 Aug

Eye-Fi was on the receiving end of some serious backlash after announcing the September 15, 2016 End of Life (EOL) date for its X2 and earlier generation SD cards. The company cited security concerns for cards released before March 2015, advising owners that it was very important they ‘cease using these products no later than’ the EOL date. Customers weren’t happy about this, and many vowed to avoid Eye-Fi products altogether in the future, prompting a new announcement from Eye-Fi: it has developed a new software utility that will keep the cards operational past the EOL date.

The new software utility is called ‘Eye-Fi X2 Utility,’ and customers can download a Mac version of it now. The company hasn’t committed to creating a Windows version of the utility, but states that it is ‘exploring the feasibility’ of doing so. Though the utility allows images to be transferred to a desktop computer, it doesn’t have all the features of Eye-Fi Center and Eye-Fi View, and requires all Eye-Fi software to be uninstalled from the computer before the new utility can be installed.

Furthermore, Eye-Fi warns that it doesn’t offer any warranties or help desk support for the utility, and that the new software is  ‘a one-time release.’

In a post today, Eye-Fi listed the following utility features:

X2 Utility Highlights

  • Support for Pro X2 and all earlier generation products with the “Eye-Fi” branding as well as 3rd party branded cards from SanDisk and Visioneer
  • Activation and set-up of cards to transfer images to a PC or Mac via an infrastructure or direct network connection
  • Transferred images will be saved to a directory of users choosing but will be organized in a date based chronological order
  • Eye-Fi Center software must be un-installed from the PC or Mac prior to installation of the X2U
  • X2U will NOT integrate with Eye-Fi View nor Eyefi Cloud service: it will be limited to desktop transfer only

The company also issued the following advisory:

Today we are releasing the X2U on the Mac (OS X) platform. We will provide an updated notice if and when the X2U becomes available on Windows, and cannot guarantee such availability before the end of August and prior to the shutdown of Eye-Fi Center and Eye-Fi View.

The Mac version of the X2 Utility can be downloaded here.

Useful Billboards? Advertisements Extend Into Urban Space

08 Jun

smart ideas for smarter cities awning billboard

At its best, advertising is entertaining, even useful. At its worst, it is invasive, abrasive, and perhaps even offensive. IBM’s new campaign from Ogilvy France skirts the line, featuring public objects that are useful but which somewhat invade the urban space.

The Smart Ideas for Smarter Cities campaign includes three billboards that extend out from city walls and into the urban environment. One is an awning of sorts, providing a dry space for residents to get out of the rain or a bit of shade to get out of the sun.

Another is a small bench which gives weary pedestrians the chance to sit down for a moment. The last is a ramp that covers a portion of a small staircase, letting cyclists or luggage-wheeling residents take an easier route.

The campaign is meant to inspire viewers to think differently about their cities and how some elements could be tweaked to be more useful for residents. It’s something of a risk, however, since this invasion of the urban environment may not be welcomed by residents who think that advertising is already too ubiquitous on city streets.

Subterranean Quarry Hotel to Extend 328 Feet Underground

19 Feb

[ By Steph in Boutique & Art Hotels & Global. ]

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 1

Construction has begun on an incredible 19-story, 5-star hotel that will be located deep within a 100-meter (328-foot) abandoned quarry near the base of Tianmashan Mountain in the Songjiang District of Shanghai. The 380-room Shimao Intercontinental Hotel seemed almost too wild to be true, and though its initial estimated opening date of May 2009 has long past, photos show progress at the quarry.

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 2
Designed by British engineering firm Atkins Global, the Shimao Hotel mimics a waterfall with a glass atrium that extends from the ground-level roof all the way down into the quarry. Three of the floors will be above-ground, with the rest extending into the pit. Instead of pumping the water out of the flooded quarry, the designers aim to turn it into a man-made lake.

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 3

Activities will take advantage of the unique landscape, including rock climbing, bungee jumping and water-based sports, and the hotel will also have its own cafes, restaurants, swimming pools, shopping and sporting facilities. Several of the public areas will be underwater, with others facing a 10-meter-deep aquarium.

Songjiang Quarry Hotel Construction 4

Songjiang Intercontinental Hotel will be powered with geothermal energy, and above-ground structures will have green roofs for insulation and to help them blend in with the surrounding scenery. Rooms are expected to start at $ 320 per night, and the hotel is scheduled to open in late 2014 to early 2015.
