5 Reasons to Get Photoshop Express on Your Phone

02 Sep

The post 5 Reasons to Get Photoshop Express on Your Phone appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Ana Mireles.

Adobe has developed many Photoshop apps, but none are as popular as the desktop version (Photoshop CC). That said, maybe it’s time for this to change, at least for one of Adobe’s apps: Photoshop Express.

In this article, I’ll tell you five reasons why I recommend you give Photoshop Express a try.

Download Photoshop Express

Adobe decided to introduce three different apps to cover the full range of editing that Photoshop can offer: Photoshop Fix, Photoshop Mix, and Photoshop Express. In this article, I’m going to talk about Photoshop Express, and why I believe it’s worth downloading.

1. It’s free

Unlike the desktop version of Photoshop, you don’t need a Creative Cloud subscription in order to use Photoshop Express.

You can download the app for free, and you’ll get access to all the features and updates.

You do have to create an Adobe account, though (one that also allows you to use a limited version of Lightroom Mobile).

Photoshop Express New Features

2. It’s social

A very important thing for a photo editing app is the social aspect. You want to snap and share photos with ease.

Adobe took this into account when designing the cropping tool. With Photoshop Express, you can crop your images using the array of predetermined sizes for Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Etsy, and most other major social networks.

For example: When cropping for Facebook, you can choose from the Page Cover, the Event Cover, the Profile Cover, the Profile, or the Ad.

Photoshop Express Social Media Crop Sizes

Of course, you can then share your photo directly from the app. From there, you can also add a watermark, send the image to Creative Cloud if you are a subscriber, send the image to a printer, and more.

3. You control size and compression

Unlike many other editing apps, Photoshop Express lets you choose the size and quality of your file before saving or sharing it.

You can set a default JPEG Quality and a default Image Size in the Preferences of the app. To set this up, tap on the menu (in the top-left corner). Then go to Preferences and then Save Options.

Saving Size and Quality

You can also change size and quality in the final stage of your saving or sharing process. Before you choose the destination of your image, click on the settings below the thumbnail (so you can modify them).

4. You can work with RAW files

A RAW file is like a digital negative. It saves the information from the shot prior to processing; that way, you have much more to work with when you’re editing, and the quality will be superior.

Of course, this means that the file size will be bigger, so keep an eye on your storage space. If you have a camera, you probably know that each brand has its own RAW files. For example, Canon uses CRW/CR2/CR3, while Nikon uses NEF/NRW. A standard and open-source RAW format is a DNG file, which is what you get if you shoot using Lightroom Mobile.

Post processing RAW Files in Photoshop Express
On the left, you can see how a RAW file is clearly marked in the gallery. That one was shot using the camera from Lightroom Mobile. On the right, you see the post-processed version of that file (edited using Photoshop Express).

5. You can do all your post-processing

Last but not least, the editing capabilities of Photoshop Express are top-notch. After all, the app was created by a company that has been leading the post-processing market for decades.

That said, Photoshop Express won’t reach the level of editing that you can do with the desktop version of Photoshop. That’s why there are three apps.

However, if you consider that Photoshop Express is free and won’t take up all your phone storage space, it’s actually very good.

Photoshop Express post production
Snapshot made with a Redmi Note 8, later post-processed in Photoshop Express.

Also, Photoshop Express includes many presets for looks, effects, stickers, frames, etc. That way, you can do some serious post-processing, or you can just create fun posts for your social media feed.

Conclusion

With so many editing apps on the market, it’s difficult to make a choice; sometimes you end up downloading a different app for each purpose.

However, Photoshop Express has proven to be an all-purpose and well-rounded app.

And if you have an iPhone, you’ll get some additional features.

Share in the comments if you decide to try Photoshop Express, and let me know what you think.

SD Express 8.0 announced, promising speeds up 4GB/s and improved performance

21 May

The SD Association (SDA) has announced the SD Express 8.0 (SD8.0) specification, promising up to transfer speed of up to 4GB/s (2GB/s per lane up to two lanes). The SD8.0 spec is built on the PCIe 4.0 standard and uses NVM Express (NVMe) technology.

It builds on the previous 7.0 specification that used PCIe 3.0, which powers the rival CFexpress format. The newest format can either deliver up to 2GB/s transfers with the PCIe 4.0 standard over a single lane using the familiar SD card format with two rows of pins (a combination denoted as PCIe G4L1 in the diagram below), or using PCIe 3.0 across two lanes (PCIe G3L2) which will add a third row of connection pins. The 4GB/s transfer speeds will be delivered by PCIe G4L2 cards using PCIe 4.0 transfer across two lanes (and three rows of pins).

SD Express speed comparison chart. Click to enlarge. Image credit: SD Association

The SDA, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, believes the new SD Express standard will create additional variety in the market and allows manufacturers to make the most of the increased speeds of SD Express to produce more storage choices for consumers. Additionally, the SDA states that SD 8.0 ‘may open even more opportunities for extra high-performance solutions using removable memory cards.’ Importantly, as with all SDA advancements, the SD 8.0 specification maintains backward compatibility across previous generations.

SD8.0 is arriving nearly two years after the SD 7.0 (SD7.0) spec was released in July 2018. The SD7.0 specification introduced PCIe 3.1 and NVMe architecture to SD cards. In February 2019, the SDA introduced the microSD Express 7.1 specification.

Camera and card makers haven’t yet made use of the UHS-III format set out in the older SD6.0 specification

Notably, camera and card makers haven’t yet made use of the UHS-III format set out in the older SD6.0 specification. Memory card manufacturer Sandisk has already shown mockups of SD Express (SD7.0) cards, which raises the possibility that the industry will skip the UHS-III specification entirely.

An alternative memory card format, the CFexpress standard, has been increasing in adoption due to its impressive speeds and performance. CFexpress cards can utilize up to four lanes and currently can deliver 1GB/s speeds per lane. However, the current CFexpress 2.0 standard, announced in February 2019, promised comparable speeds using four PCIe 3.0 lanes to the ones that SD 8.0 will get from two v4.0 lanes

It will be interesting to see when CFExpress standards adopt a PCIe 4.0 interface, as the SDA and CFA continue to be in a memory card arms race. If history has proven anything, it’s that it will take some time before the new standards, and the accompanying performance increases, are commonplace in consumer products. However, the new SD8.0 spec lays impressive groundwork technology for faster cameras and improved workflows for photographers and videographers.

For additional information on SD8.0, the SDA has launched a ‘virtual trade show.’ You can explore it by clicking here.

Canon’s DPP Express app for iPad will soon require a monthly subscription plan

10 Sep

According to a new note on Canon Singapore’s website, Canon is making its Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Express iPad app subscription-based in the near future.

DPP Express is an iPad-only app that works hand-in-hand with the Canon Camera Connect app to process JPEG and ‘CR3’ Raw files from Canon cameras. The application is fairly standard in its feature set and functionality, with a rather standard interface designed to easily make adjustments and edits to images on the go.

A screenshot from Canon Singapore’s website showing the note that clarifies a subscription will be required starting with app version 1.2.0.

Currently, Canon DPP Express has a rating of just 1.6 stars out of 5 in the iOS App Store—and that’s before the impending update. Starting with version 1.2.0, which is due out October 2019 according to the note, the app will require a monthly subscription at a cost that’s yet to be disclosed.

It will still be possible to transfer ‘CR3’ files from compatible cameras to mobile devices via the Canon Camera Connect app, but Canon considers DPP Express to be a major component in its ‘mobile Raw workflow,’ so adding a monthly subscription cost to the workflow likely won’t go over well for those who do use the app.

We have contacted Canon for more details on pricing and whether or not there will be an annual subscription option as well and will update this article accordingly when we hear back.

Newly announced microSD Express format offers transfer speeds up to 950MBps

26 Feb

The SD Association has launched the microSD Express format, bringing extremely fast read speeds of up to 985 MBps to microSD cards — approximately 10 times faster than current high-end cards are capable of.

Like the SD Express format, microSD Express uses the NVMe 1.3 and PCIe 3.1 interfaces that are deployed in PC computers to power high-speed SSD drives. This technology is integrated into the second row of pins on the card. This means microSD Express cards will work at full speed on compatible devices but will also be backward compatible.

The new standard will not only provide much higher transfer speeds but also reduce power consumption compared to regular microSD cards, thanks to support for the low-power sub-states (L1.1 and L1.2) of PCIe v3.1.

High-speed and high-capacity microSD card could be very useful in all sorts of applications, from automotive to mobile, but in the imaging realm might provide most value to video shooters who need the capability to shoot 360-degree and/or Raw footage without being limited by storage.

That said, we are likely still some time away from manufacturers launching any microSD Express cards and compatible devices. In the meantime more information is available in the video above and the official press release on sdcard.org.

SD Express SDUC memory cards will give you 985MB/s transfer speeds and 128TB of storage

29 Jun

The SD Association has released the name and official specifications for SD Express, the latest Secure Digital (SD) memory card format, as part of its SD 7.0 specification. Created as a successor to UHS-III cards, SD Express is next-next-gen technology that will work alongside a new SDUC card to provide fast, high-capacity memory cards in a familiar package.

As the name suggests, SD Express cards are going to be fast. The SD Express format uses third-gen PCIe and NVMe transfer protocols on top of the dual-level pin layout interface to achieve a maximum transfer speed of 985MB per second—almost a gigabyte per second and roughly 1.5 times faster than UHS-III cards, which still haven’t hit the market yet.

In order to achieve the maximum transfer speed of SD Express cards, you’ll need a camera or device that supports the new format as well. If you end up sticking your brand new SD Express card inside your 5D Mark III, it’ll simply default back to the speed of UHS-I cards.

SD Express cards will be available in SDHC (High Capacity) and SDXC (Extended Capacity), as well as an all-new SDUC (Ultra Capacity) format. The new SDUC cards will have a maximum storage capacity of 128TB, a large leap from the maximum 2TB capacity of SDXC cards.

Infographic provided by the SD Association that details the various specs and classifications of different SD cards.

It also appears as though it’ll be possible for memory card manufacturers to make SDUC cards for slower SD bus interfaces. So, according to the above graphic, you could theoretically have a 128TB High Speed SD card. With a little back-of-the-napkin math, that means it would take 1,481 days to transfer all 128TB of the card based on the 25MB per second speeds of High Speed SD cards.

To find out more and read more details about the SD Express and SDUC formats, be sure to check out the SD Association’s press release. The SD Association has also released a white paper detailing the new capabilities and features found in the SD 7.0 specifications if you’re interested in really digging deep.
