Google’s ex-lead of computational photography Marc Levoy to build new imaging experiences at Adobe

Marc Levoy1, Google’s former computational photography lead and arguably one of the founding figures of computational approaches to imaging, has joined Adobe as Vice President and Fellow, reporting directly to Chief Technology Officer Abhay Parasnis. At Adobe, Marc will ‘spearhead company-wide technology initiatives focused on computational photography and emerging products, centered on the concept of a universal camera app.’ He will also work closely with Photoshop Camera, Adobe Research, and the machine-learning focused Sensei and Digital Imaging teams.

The imaging sphere was taken by surprise a few months back when Marc left Google where he helped spearhead a revolution in mobile imaging with the excellent success of Pixel phones and their stills and video capabilities. Marc and his colleagues at Google developed HDR+, which uses burst photography alongside clever exposure and merging techniques to increase dynamic range of capture and reduce noise. His work, in conjunction with Peyman Milanfar, also helped Pixel cameras yield visible photos in the dark using Night Sight, and even capture super-resolution data that captured far more detail in ‘zoomed-in’ shots than competitors, despite limited hardware. Google’s burst mode techniques even allowed its cameras to forego traditional demosaicing processes, yielding more detailed images than even competitive cameras with similar sensor sizes.2

Marc also championed the use of machine learning to tackle challenges in image capture and processing, leading to better portrait modes, more accurate colors via learning-based white balance, and synthetic re-lighting of faces. Marc helped push the boundaries of what is possible with limited hardware by focusing heavily on the software.

At its core, Adobe is a software company, and so Marc’s expertise is at once relevant. At Adobe, Marc will continue to explore the application of computational photography to Adobe’s imaging and photography products, with one of his focuses being the development of a ‘universal camera app’ that could function across multiple platforms and devices. This should allow Marc to continue his passion for delivering unique and innovative imaging experiences to the masses.

Marc Levoy has a long history of pioneering computational approaches to images, video and computer vision, spanning both industry and academia. He taught at Stanford University, where he remains Professor, Emeritus, and is often credited as popularizing the term ‘computational photography’ through his courses. Before he joined Google he worked as visiting faculty at Google X on the camera for the Explorer Edition of Google Glass. His work early on at Stanford with Google was the basis for Street View in Google Maps. Marc also helped popularize light field photography with his work at Stanford with Mark Horowitz and Pat Hanrahan, advising students like Ren Ng who went on to found Lytro.

Marc also developed his own smartphone apps early on to utilize the potential of burst photography for enhanced image quality with apps like SynthCam. The essential idea – which underpins all multi-imaging techniques today employed by smartphones – is to capture many images to synthesize together into a final image. This technique overcomes the major shortcomings of smartphone cameras: their sensors have such small surface areas and their lenses have such small apertures that the amount of light captured is relatively low. Given that most of the noise in digital images is due to a lack of captured photons (read our primer on the dominant source of noise: shot noise), modern smartphones employ many clever techniques to capture more total light, and in intelligent ways as well to retain both highlight and shadow information while dealing with subject movement from shot to shot. Much of Marc’s early work, as seen in SynthCam, became the basis for the multi-shot noise averaging and bokeh techniques used in Pixel smartphones.

Marc is also passionate about the potential for collaborative efforts and helped develop the ‘Frankencamera’ as an open source platform for experimenting with computational photography. We look forward to the innovation he’ll bring to Adobe, and hope that much of it will be available across platforms and devices to the benefit of photographers at large.

Video: How photography impacts mood, experiences and more

WIRED has published a video exploring the topic of photography’s impact on humans, particularly selfies and the impact photographing moments can have on one’s experience and memories. The video touches on topics ranging from anxiety over one’s appearance caused by distortion in selfies to ways photographing scenes both improves and impairs memories of the moment.

WIRED senior editor Peter Rubin talked with multiple professionals as part of the video, including facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Boris Paskhover, who explained that over the last few years, a number of patients have expressed concerns with the size of their nose based on how it appears in selfies. Dr. Paskhover previously published a study analyzing the selfie distortion effect.

In addition to the potential insecurity caused by selfies, the video also looked at the effect photographing scenes, such as a meal or concert, may have on the photographer. As part of this, Rubin talked with Alixandra Barasch, a marketing professor at NYU, who highlighted potential positives and negatives associated with taking pictures, a topic about which she’d previously published a study.

According to Barasch, photography can have a negative impact on the photographer’s memory of primarily non-visual aspects of the moment, such as sound and taste, but provide a more engaged, immersive feeling in primarily observational experiences. Barasch recommended sharing images after the experience was over, however, to avoid growing distracted and anxious by the social platform.

Finally, Rubin conducted an experiment with professional photographer Chris Burkard, who joined Rubin in wearing eye-tracking glasses to compare what he looked at versus a non-professional. The results, though deviating from the topic of photography’s impact on the people taking pictures, were interesting nonetheless.

Sigma Mount Converter MC-11 experiences focus bug when used with Sony a9

Sigma has warned that the use of its Mount Converter MC-11 and certain Sigma zoom lenses with the Sony a9 may result in missed focus. According to a notice recently published by Sigma, the issue may arise ‘occasionally’ when using AF-S mode and while shooting ‘in the telephoto range.’

The phenomenon, according to Sigma, affects both the EF-E and SA-E versions of the MC-11. The company says it is investigating the issue and that it will publish an update ‘shortly,’ presumably with a software fix in the pipeline.

CP+ 2017 – Sony interview: ‘We need to offer new imaging experiences’

Earlier this year, we traveled to the CP+ trade show in Yokohama, Japan. At the show, we met with senior executives from several major manufacturers, including Yasuyuki Nagata of Sony. During our interview we discussed the future of the a7-series, Sony’s strategy for growing the 1-inch camera segment, and the new a99II.

Please note that this interview has been edited slightly for clarity and flow.


Nikon recently canceled the DL series, which would have competed with the RX100-series. Is this good or bad for Sony?

It’s both good and bad. If Nikon had achieved a high-quality wide lens camera with a 1 inch sensor, that would have been a very competitive product. So in that sense, it’s good for us. But actually, from the perspective of driving the 1 inch sensor market, we want to stimulate this market and that means multiple manufacturers.

What is your general strategy for FE lenses in the future?

We’re launching products based on customer feedback – especially professionals. When we started the Alpha a7 series we only had three full-frame mirrorless (FE) lenses, but after we launched the a7R II, a lot of professionals started to use it. So their voices [became more important]. For example they wanted a 24-70mm F2.8, which is why we prioritized that model. So basically our strategy is to listen to our customers.

The GM 24-70mm F2.8 was a lens that Sony’s professional full-frame users wanted the company to make, according to Mr Nagata. 

In the past, we’ve heard that Sony wants to create some longer sports optics. is that something that is being planned in the future?

If a lot of professional photographers [want those lenses] we will have to create them. But for now, our main professional user base is portraits and landscape photographers.

Do you aspire to having a base of professional sports photographers in future?

Maybe. Of course it’s not just the lens, it’s the body as well.

The Olympics in Tokyo is three years away – would you like to see Sony lenses in the arenas alongside Canon and Nikon?

Of course, that’s our dream. And we won’t give up on that. But it’s hard to make a specific comment on future products.

How long will it be before mirrorless products represent the majority of cameras at large sporting events?

I don’t know! Historically, I believe it took Canon 7-10 years to become the dominant brand at professional sports events. It’s not easy. But a lot of professional photographers have already switched from DSLR to mirrorless. Maybe in some cases, we are already satisfying the needs of some sports photographers.

The Sony a7R II is a capable stills camera, but fits equally as easily into a professional 4K video workflow. 

Speaking about the a7-series lineup, how does your customer base divide up in terms of stills photographers versus videographers?

We don’t divide our customers in this way. Most of our customers shoot both video and stills, currently. Until a few years ago, video and stills shooters were totally different, but recently, portrait and wedding photographers have started shooting video too.

We always consider both kinds of users at every stage of development.

Moving on to the RX series, there are a lot of products now, and you’re leaving older models in the lineup – what is your aim with this strategy?

It depends on the region. By adding RX100 models 1-5, we expanded the 1 inch sensor market, and in most regions we enjoy #1 market share. The 1 inch sensor market was developed by Sony, and then other competitors started joining us.

[As such] we started with 100% market share, but even now we enjoy 60-70% market share in most regions. And our high-technology models like the RX100V drives some of that, but for the cost of one Mark V, you can buy three of the original RX100. So the cost factor is also important. With both entry-level and high-end RX models, we hope to be able to drive the 1 inch sensor market and remain at number 1.

The Cyber-shot RX100 V packs a lot of features into its pocketable form-factor, but Mr Nagata insists that older RX models still have their place in the market. 

We understand some of the comments we get from dealers, that because of this strategy they have to carry all five models, which might not be efficient for them, but realistically, those dealers ‘cherry pick’ the models they want to carry. Maybe in an area like the US it doesn’t make sense to [sell] all five models, but in developing countries, the Mark I and Mark II are crucial.

The earthquake last May caused a good deal of disruption – what was the effect on the camera division?

From a supply point of view, we had a month or so’s worth of product in stock. So the effect on our supply chain didn’t really kick in until the June, July timeframe, depending on the model. One inch sensors are easier to make than full-frame sensors, which require at least 2 months to manufacture, so the effect was more profound on full-frame sensors than one-inch. But it was all back up and running by the end of 2016.

What kind of feedback do you get from professionals that have switched from DSLRs to mirrorless?

Some professional photographers have said that G Master lenses were a trigger for switching, and also the [new] STF 100mm lens. Thanks to the short flange-back distance, a lot of E mount customers can use their own lenses with a7 cameras. That’s a benefit of the system. And after they’ve switched to an a7 body, people tend to switch over completely and buy Sony lenses.

Smaller body size is a big factor, and silent shooting is important too.

Is the lens attachment rate different from an a6500 to an a7-series camera?

It’s totally different. Even from the a7 to the a7R II, the attachment rate [with the a7R II] is almost double. From the a6000 to the a6500, again it’s completely different.

What are your plans for developing your pro support network?

We’ve started pro support, but we’re still learning. Professional photographers travel all over the world, so how to provide consistent support not just in their home country, but globally is very important for us.

Sony has ambitions to expand and improve its PRO Support network for professional alpha users. 

Was the choice of a smaller, lower-endurance battery in the a7 series made deliberately to keep the camera size small?

We are fully aware of this feedback. Right now, we’re not getting any negative commentary about the size of our a6000-series and a7-series cameras, so there’s probably no need to make them any smaller. There’s a balance between the size of the body and lens, too. So just making the body smaller doesn’t make much sense. And I’m afraid I can’t comment on how we will tackle this issue without commenting on future products, so I can’t say anything more.

Is Sony interested in joining the 360 imaging market?

We already have an action camera lineup, and it’s a similar category. The market itself is kind of shrinking, so instead of having one camera for 360, we’d probably prefer to support professional users, making 360 imaging using our a7-series and a rig. Rather than chasing after the consumer segment.

Do you see more growth in the high-end of the market in general?

I believe so. Which is why pro support is getting more important for us. But of course it cascades down to lower-end models too, and we don’t deny the important of the entry-level segment.

What’s the most important thing that Sony has to do to maintain its position in the next few years?

We need to offer new imaging experiences. We made the NEX series – APS-C mirrorless. That was a new experience. The RX100, the full-frame a7-series, G Master lenses – STF, too. It’s a new imaging experience. Sony is by far the number 1 sensor manufacturer, and the advantage of this is that is allows us to work together with sensor engineers to create the best image sensor for a specific model we are developing. so we’re aware of the sensor development schedule for the next two or three years. So we know what kind of future is coming, in terms of sensors, so we can plan ahead – what kind of bodies will be required, and what kind of lenses will required. We can take advantage of that.

When it comes to core technologies, we’re making lenses sensors, we’re making imaging sensors, we’re making LSIs and we have a software division. Some of our customers couldn’t believe we made an autofocus STF lens. It’s not easy. But we know light travels through lenses, and we know how light is detected on the sensor. So the total combination [of these technologies] means we can make that product.

 

The recently-announced a99 II is proof that the A-mount is still a going concern. According to Mr Nagata, Sony needs to maintain the A mount alongside the E mount. 

In the SLT lineup, development is slower than the a7-series. Where will that line go in the future?

Having options is really important, especially for high-end amateurs and professionals. If we just had the same cameras and lenses [as our competitors] the results would be the same. Some people want A-mount, some want E-mount, and depending on the situation, some customers might want both. Having that variety of bodies and lenses is key.

We need both A mount and E mount. Some people thought that Sony was only developing the E mount, until we introduced the a99 II. You’ve seen it, it’s a serious camera. There is a huge number of lenses for A mount, from Sony and Minolta, and we want to maintain a good relationship with those customers by providing great A mount bodies with no compromises compared to the E mount system. But we can start capturing new customers with the E mount. We we need both.

In the long term, do you want those A mount customers to come over to E mount?

That depends on them.

Will we see more A mount lenses, specifically designed to get the most out of the A99 II’s autofocus technology?

We have to prioritize. It’s not easy developing new lenses. Our customers’ expectations are very high, especially after we launched the G Master series. So we can probably only launch a few lenses a year!


Editors’ note:

It was interesting to speak to Mr Nagata in February. This month he is celebrating his 31st year with Sony, and during the course of three decades he has worked in various divisions, from robotics to Handycams. Clearly, he is not afraid of something that Sony has often been criticized for – having ‘too many’ products in the market. Every product has its place, from the high-end a99 II to the old, but still current, CyberShot RX100 Mark I, and Sony appears intent on introducing even more ‘new imaging experiences’ in the future.

Although understandably cautious about giving anything away, it is possible to glean some insights from Mr Nagata’s responses to certain questions. Firstly, it doesn’t look like the Alpha mount is going anywhere for now, although we would expect the relatively slow pace of development to be a continuing feature of that range, compared to the company’s mirrorless ILCs.

Secondly, reading between the lines, we’re optimistic that bigger batteries are coming to the next generation of Sony’s alpha range of mirrorless cameras. As Mr Nagata pointed out (although not in so many words), there’s not much point making a camera really small if you intend it to be used with large, high-quality lenses. And for videographers especially, the limited endurance of the a7R II and a7S II in some conditions is a real frustration – one that Sony is clearly very aware of. 

Sony is also aware that it needs to get better at catering to the needs of professionals in a more general sense – not only when it comes to the spec sheet of their cameras. Post-sales support for professionals is something that Canon and Nikon have perfected over decades, and is one of the main reasons why major news outlets and picture agencies still generally stick with one or the other. It’s early days for Sony’s PRO Support network, but we’d expect the company to put a lot of energy into improving and expanding it on the run-up to the 2020 Olympics – when all eyes will be on Tokyo, and Sony will be hoping for some professional representation on the world’s biggest stage.

Purple Reign: Photographer Brian Ach shares his experiences of working with Prince

Celebrity and concert photographer Brian Ach was Prince’s European tour photographer during the artist’s 2011 “Welcome 2” tour through North America, Europe and Australia. Brian shared some of his tour stories with us in his closing talk at PIX 2015, and this morning he chatted again with us about his experience photographing and working with Prince, following the musician’s death this week, aged 57.

You were hired to photograph the European leg of Prince’s tour in 2011. As a huge fan of his music, and knowing his reputation for hard work and high expectations, how did you approach this job?

I didn’t get a chance to meet Prince before the first show in Paris. Since I didn’t have any direction from him about how or what I should shoot, I decided that I was going to be true to myself and shoot the show the way I thought it should be shot. I decided to go for broke and shoot it in an artistic way, to make it worthy of his art and his performance.

When I was ready to deliver the edits to Prince after the show, I opted not to show them to him in chronological order. Instead, I picked what I considered to be the most interesting 6 or 7 shots and put those first. Prince entered the room and said, “You have something to show me,” so I pulled the first picture up on the screen. He stared at it for 15 seconds in complete silence and then got up and walked out of the room. I assumed I was going to get fired after a single shot, but a minute later Prince walked back in with his whole band. He pointed at the screen and said, “Look at that,” and then stood back with a smile on his face. He asked his manager, “Where did you find this guy?” and I answered, “Queens.” He laughed, and from that moment we had an understanding. He expected the best, so as long as I did my best work, we’d work well together.

You have a lot of experience photographing musicians, from U2 to Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Bruce Springsteen. Was it different to photograph Prince?

The advantage of shooting for an artist is that you get to shoot the whole show rather than just the first 30 seconds of the first few songs. This gives you time to be more creative as long as you get the basic shots out of the way, and it gives you access to areas of the stage that you wouldn’t normally have.

Prince was an epic performer, so photographing his show meant going for the epic shots. I shot a lot of wide angles from behind the stage to bring people right into the performance, and I had the luxury to swap out different lenses to try different things. Normally I would never shoot a concert with a 50mm F1.4, but I used it during a few quieter moments to really capture the feeling of the moment. I had time to experiment, to catch a strobe, get him backlit, drag my shutter. Prince was an artist, so he was going to “get” it if I took some chances to be more creative. However it was still a huge risk if he didn’t like what I shot!

Prince owned his public image. He was one of the first artists to start buying out photographers and his music, to refuse to have his interviews recorded. He made sure there was nothing out there that he felt cheapened his image or his music. He had strong opinions about what he wanted, and over time I was able to learn what he was looking for. Sometimes I argued with him about shots that he rejected and sometimes he conceded. Because even though he knew what he wanted, he was also collaborative. His entire career was one risk after another, so he appreciated and respected when I took risks and challenged him.

When I took this shot [above], I thought, “Yes!  I got it!”  I showed it to Prince and he said no, we weren’t going to use it. It was a great shot of him walking on stage singing with the crowd bursting into applause, but it wasn’t going to work. I asked what was wrong with it and Prince said, “There are empty seats behind me.  It can’t look like there were empty seats at my show.” Those seats had to be empty because they were behind the stage, but even though there was a good reason, it told the wrong story. I agreed with Prince and that photo wasn’t used.

Prince didn’t play a concert; he put on a show, and it wasn’t the same show every night. His band had to know at least 300 songs and they had to be ready to play any of them, as they would often see the set list for the first time when they walked on stage. Nothing was choreographed, so it kept you on your toes thinking, “Man, he’s never done that before.”

One time, Prince did a guitar solo, ripped off the guitar, and threw it into the audience. When I saw him after the show he smiled that little smile he’s famous for. “Did you get that guitar in the air?” “You know what?  I did.”  “Right on.”

Do you have a favorite photo you took of Prince?

Prince was an amazingly energetic performer, but this photo [above] was taken during a very calm, peaceful moment. He was completely in the zone, and it was rare to catch him like this. At the same time, even as he committed himself to this moment, he still knew what he needed to do. Before the shot, he saw me there so he pulled his guitar from behind the mic stand. He knew I was going to get the shot and that it would be good. It’s that kind of awareness that you don’t see in many musicians. So confident in his ability that he didn’t have to think about performing; it just came naturally.

I once commented that his guitar playing seemed so effortless for him. He told me, “Yeah, that’s from practicing so long that my fingers bled. I’d play 8 hours a day when I was growing up. That’s called putting in the work. You’ve gotta put in the work.” He said that a lot, that you have to “put in the work”. I’ve found that to be true for my own work as well. I can’t be free to be creative if I’m thinking about the settings on my camera. A violinist plays scales for hours until they can play music without thinking about the notes. You’ve got to put in the work if you want to be good at something, and Prince put in the work.

What is your favorite memory from working with Prince?

Before the last show I photographed, I left a handwritten note for Prince on the table in his dressing room. I told him how I’d never have believed that the kid in Ohio watching Prince perform ‘Purple Rain’ at the 1985 American Music Awards on TV would some day be living his dream photographing Prince on tour. I thanked him for the opportunity.

Prince didn’t say anything to me before the show or after the show, so I was worried that he didn’t get the note. But at 4am as the night was winding down, he put his arm around me and said, “Thanks for your note; that put me right to go on stage tonight. You make art. These aren’t photos; it’s art.” That was the one of the best things anyone has ever said to me. As a photographer I don’t get feedback or validation very often, so to hear that from one of my heroes was huge for me.

Prince never shared most of the photos I took of him during this tour. By the third show, he said that he wanted to keep the photos for himself rather than send them out on Wire Image. At the end of the tour he told me that the photos were art and needed to be shared, so he picked a few from each show to send to Wire Image. By then the tour was already over so the photos weren’t seen by many people, and Prince kept the rest in his personal collection.

A number of news agencies have called me asking if I have unpublished photos of Prince. I do – I have tens of thousands of them.  But they aren’t mine to share.
