Epson announces new and improved 13″ SureColor P700, 17″ P900 photo printers

Epson has announced a pair of new SureColor photo printers, the SureColor P700 and the SureColor P900. These printers print up to 13″ and 17″ wide respectively and are replacing the SureColor P600 and P800 printers in Epson’s lineup.

The P700 and P900 introduce a variety of new features, some of which were introduced in the large format SureColor P7570 and P9570 printers Epson announced last October. Like these larger printers, the P700 and P900 include a new internal light for checking on your prints as they’re being made and a 4.3″ touch screen control panel. While the P700 and P900 do not have the 12 channel print head of their larger siblings, they do include a new 10 channel MicroPiezo AMC Print Head which features dedicated channels for Matte Black and Photo Black ink. This is a big deal for Epson printers as previous generations of printers required time-consuming (and ink-consuming) black ink switching when moving from glossy to matte photo paper.

The SureColor P700 and P900 printers include a new set of Epson UltraChrome PRO10 inks. Epson states that the new inks deliver up to a 6 percent wider color gamut than the P600 and P800 printers. Further, they include a new violet ink channel, which will improve the appearance of blues, violets and purples in your prints. Epson is known for their industry-leading print permanence, and the new ink set continues this trend, promising longevity up to 200 years for color prints and 400 years for black and white prints.

Speaking of black and white prints, the Epson P700 and P900 include a new Carbon Black printing mode, which increases the DMAX by up to 11 percent versus the SureColor P800. The special driver mode is optimized for glossy and metallic glossy media and produces what Epson calls a “rich, ‘wet’ looking black.” This mode uses the existing Light Gray ink channel and does not require a dedicated ink channel, such as Canon’s Chroma Optimizer.

Considering the printers themselves, let’s look at the new 4.3″ touchscreen user interface. This new control panel is user customizable, including in terms of color and the information displayed. The panel can also show a live preview of the image you are printing. Settings shown on the touchscreen panel include the internal light option, network settings, errors and warnings, print job status and remaining time, media type and loading options, ink levels and more. Regarding network settings, the SureColor P700 and P900 printers include new 2.4 and 5 GHz wireless functionality.

The SureColor P700 and P900 printers are also much more compact than their predecessors. They are up to 30 percent smaller than the printers they are replacing. In fact, the new SureColor P900, despite printing up to 17″ wide rather than 13″ wide, is the same size as the outgoing SureColor P600. Specifically, the P700 is 20″ wide and the P900 is 24″ wide. They have respective minimum depths of 20.8″ and 23.1″.

As mentioned, the SureColor P700 supports 13″ wide media. Core media up to 2″ is supported. The P700 includes an include rear roll media feed, allowing for roll printing up to 10 ft. long. When loading sheet media from the top, the P700 can hold between 10 and 30 sheets at a time. There is also no need for a second Fine Art tray anymore; you can load all accepted paper via the single top load tray. The printer can accept media up to 1.5mm thick.

The SureColor P900 accepts 17″ wide media and supports both 2″ and 3″ cored roll media via an optional enclosed roll media adapter. Like the P700, there is a single top lead sheet tray now, which can accept between 10 and 30 sheets of paper and papers up to 1.5mm thick. In the case of both the P700 and P900, there is no built-in cutter.

To summarize, the key features of the new Epson SureColor P700 and P900 printers are as follows:

  • UltraChrome PRO10 10-color ink technology with up to a 6 percent wider color gamut than the SureColor P600 and P800 printers.
  • New MicroPiezo AMC print head with dedicated channels for photo black and matte black. This means no more black ink switching when changing paper types.
  • Carbon Black Overcoat technology results in improved black density on glossy media.
  • Dramatically smaller physical size compared to the P600 and P800 printers.
  • New 4.3″ touchscreen control panel.
  • Improved media feeding options.

The Epson SureColor P700 and P900 printers are now available to order with shipment expected to begin in early May. The estimated MSRP for the new P700 and P900 printers are $ 799 and $ 1,195 respectively.

Review: What it’s like to scan film on the Epson Perfection V600

Film continues to be a popular medium among photographers today, and whether you’re an active or former analog user, the easiest way to share your treasured moments is by digitizing your film through scanning.

Many photo labs offer scanning as part of their services, often using large scanners able to process a full roll of 35mm film in a few minutes. But, just like developing at a lab, having a lab scan your film costs money, which is why many people like the idea of scanning negatives themselves. There are a lot of options when it comes to digitizing film yourself (including simply using a digital camera), but some of these methods require complex setups, some have huge equipment costs, and some just aren’t very good. Others, meanwhile, are actually pretty good and affordable. Meet the Epson Perfection V600.

The Epson V600 retails for $ 229.99, although there were several deals around the web for under $ 200 at the time of writing this article. In the box you get the scanner, two plastic film holder inserts, a power cable, a data cable and an Epson software CD.

Outside of the film holders, this is a really straightforward out-of-the-box experience.

Before I get too deep into breaking down what using this scanner is like I want to give some context. First, while the Epson V600 can be used for a variety of scanning applications, I’ll only be talking about using it to scan film. Second, I’ve been scanning my own film for several years using all sorts of various film scanners, and let me tell you there is a steep learning curve. Everything can be done right, but it just takes time to piece together each element and make sure you’re processing things in a way that works for you.

There are, of course, many different approaches to getting a desirable image from scanning film; the opinions in this article are just based off of my experiences. Film negatives are a lot like Raw files; how you process them can make a big difference to how they end up looking (particularly in the case of color negative and black and white films).

Getting the V600 set up

The V600 can scan normal documents as well as negatives. To scan film, remove the white cushioning bit from the top of the scanner bed and set it aside. Now you’re ready to load up the supplied film holders. You can scan either 12 35mm or 4 medium format images at once.

Once unboxed and set up, using this scanner is pretty straightforward: you lay your film in one of the supplied plastic holders, snap it shut and place it in the scanner so that your negatives are centered on the scanner bed. You’ll be able to scan up to twelve 35mm photos or four medium format photos at once. The scanner also comes with an additional film holder for mounted slide film.

I wish the plastic holders were made of something higher quality. I’ve used other scanners that have magnetic strips for their holders and I prefer those by a long shot.

Once your negatives are in place, it’s time to get scanning via the included software, ‘Epson Scan’. Depending on which scan mode you choose (more on that below), you simply set your desired scan quality, make a preview scan and select your scan area with a marquee tool (except in Full Auto mode). Then you commit to the final scan, which can take a long while or a short while depending on your quality settings. Sound simple? Not necessarily…

On my Windows 10 desktop the scanning software was completely unstable

When I initially set up the V600, I had it connected to my Windows 10 desktop and quickly found the software to be unstable, crashing frequently during the preview scan. Eventually I couldn’t even get my computer to recognize that the scanner was on and connected. This is apparently not an uncommon problem either (I tried all the fixes in the link to no avail). I ended up following a bunch of tutorials online to fix the problem and still wasn’t able to get it to work reliably.

So, I switched over to my Apple Macbook which, though generally slower than my PC, had no issues at all running the software. Once I finally got it up and running, I actually found it fairly user-friendly. The design looks dated, but the operation is straightforward.

Scanning modes

The software has four modes, the specific options of which you can see in the images below (I’ve omitted the “Office Mode” because I’m not covering document scanning in this review).

Full Auto Mode

Full auto mode is the easiest of the modes to use, but will be too dumbed-down for most users.

Home Mode

Home mode is the mode I’d recommend as it offers just enough options without being overwhelming.

Professional Mode

Pro mode offers the most options but it can be overwhelming, with so many scanning quality windows that unless you really know what you’re doing, you’ll likely feel claustrophobic.

If you’re using the Professional Mode, the desktop can get crowded real fast with the different modules. There’s actually an additional Color Palette module in Professional Mode that you can use to alter the hues of colors in your photos that isn’t pictured above because I couldn’t fit it alongside all the other windows. If you’re up for it, the Professional Mode offers a ton of control, but I think Home mode will likely suit most users just fine.

‘Home’ vs. ‘Pro’ mode

Home Mode offers just enough control to get a good scan so that you can then make the rest of the adjustments to image quality in whatever photo editing software you prefer. You’ve got DPI, Brightness scale, and a handful of intelligent options like Color Restoration. The V600 also includes Epson’s ‘Digital ICE technology’ – available in all scanning modes – which automatically removes dust and small scratches (though I still advise dusting with canned air or a rocket blower before each scan).

Home Mode offers just enough control to get a good scan

Professional Mode, on the other hand, offers a full slew of adjustments and filters including Grain Reduction and additional dust removal alongside exposure and color adjusting tools like histograms, curves, white balance sliders, and so on. One other really nice feature is that you can change the bit-depth of your scans, with the option of 8- or 16-bit Grayscale and 24- or 48-bit Color. The DPI setting goes all the way up to 12800, so if you’re planning on making big prints this will set you up right for that.

Home Mode Professional Mode

Above you can see a comparison of the same shot scanned in Home Mode (left) and Professional Mode (right). The Home Mode scan has noticeably less dust and hairs while the Professional Mode (with dust removal turned off) has more dust but is a bit closer to how I think the photo should look after some slight white balance, tint, and contrast corrections. Photo was shot on Portra 400VC with a Hasselblad 80mm F2.8 and a Proxar macro filter.

Quality compared to photo lab scans

More important than how this scanner stacks up against itself is how it stacks up against scans done by professionals in a photo lab. Below is a gallery comparing photos scanned on the Epson V600 to ones scanned by the professionals at Panda Lab here in Seattle, WA.

The Epson scans were all done in ‘Home’ mode at 4800 DPI (for 6400 DPI scanning you’ll need to switch to ‘Pro’ mode) and saved as Tiffs. This resulted in files ~6600 x 4400 pixels. For the sake of comparison we’ve downsized them to match the Panda Lab scans and saved them as JPEGs. Other than that, no additional adjustments were made to either scan.

When viewed at 100% or on a large monitor, the lab scans show more detail and significantly finer grain than the Epson scans. They also do a much better job reflecting the tonality of the Fujifilm Pro 400H film they were shot on. With the Epson scans, the color is OK, but there’s a need for color-correction.

The corrected Epson scans are certainly good-enough for social media sharing or small printing

The image below and to the right is an Epson scan edited in Lightroom to match the tonality of the Professional scan. With a little fussing, you can get the colors close, but the professional scan still looks sharper, more detailed and less noisy than the Epson. But depending on your intended viewing size, that may not matter; the corrected Epson scans certainly look good enough to me for social media sharing or small printing.

Of course, the lab scans cost money (~$ 10) and the Epson scans cost you time, after initial investment. It took about 3 minutes to scan each 35mm frame, which means if you’re shooting rolls of 36 exposures, that’s 108 minutes of scanning. So if you purchase the Epson for the retail price of $ 229.99, you’d theoretically have to scan 23 rolls before saving money versus the cost of lab scans, which would take more than 41 hours.

Medium format hiccups

Note the slightly darker band in the highlights in the upper left quadrant of this photo (120 HP5+ Pushed two Stops and scanned with the Epson V600). This appears in several of my images.

Sure, the V600 can scan at high resolutions and high color depth, but unfortunately some slight banding can be an issue when working with medium format film – I didn’t notice this issue with 35mm. Banding is not an uncommon issue for flatbeds, but it is something to be aware of.

For those who don’t know, banding looks like what it sounds like: a portion of your photo will have a straight band of a slightly different exposure along the line of the scan. This is something that can sort of be corrected using Photoshop but depending on the complexity of your image it can become a huge pain to deal with.

Below you can see a full gallery of that same roll of HP5+ all scanned using the Epson V600 and edited to taste in Lightroom.

The wrap

The Epson V600 has some flaws, like flimsy film trays and dated-looking software. But assuming you can get everything set up successfully (sorry Windows 10 users), it’s relatively easy and straightforward to get decent-looking scans using Home mode, especially if you’re only looking to scan 35mm. However, for the highest quality scans, you’re going to spend a lot of time waiting around for the V600 to do its thing.

Ultimately I think this product is a good option for amateurs and enthusiasts looking for a decent way to scan their current work, or for those looking to bring new life to old negatives. But for those desiring both high quality files and painless turnaround, your local lab is still your best bet – if you have one nearby.

Epson reveals SureColor P7570, P9570 wide-format printers that offer ‘museum quality’ prints

Epson has expanded its SureCore P-Series line of printers with the new wide-format SureColor P7570 and SureColor P9570 models offering 24in and 44in print sizes, UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink, and PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead tech. Epson’s Reed Hecht calls the P7570 and P9570 its ‘most advanced printers to date.’

Both printer models feature dedicated nozzles for Matte and Photo Black ink, which eliminates ink switching and improves overall printing speeds. According to Epson, the new 6.6cm (2.6in) PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead combined with the new 12-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink enables these models to print up to 2.4 times faster than the previous models.

Other features include a new print mode called Black Enhanced Overcoat offering improved DMAX for what Epson says is better sharpness and wider contrast ratio on glossy prints, as well as a 4.3in customizable color touchscreen, support for the optional Epson SpectroProofer, a built-in LED light for viewing prints as they’re printing, and a sealed roll media door designed to better protect against dust.

Talking about what users can expect from these two models is Wilhelm Imaging Research director of research Henry Wilhelm, who said:

Preliminary data for the Epson 12-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment inks in the new SureColor P7570 and P9570 create stunning museum-quality prints with WIR Display Permanence Ratings that will equal or exceed the ratings achieved by the current UltraChrome HDX inks of up to 200 years for color prints and up to 400 years for B&W. Prints framed with UV-absorbing acrylic – and those displayed under LED illumination – will achieve significantly higher ratings.

Epson plans to showcase its new printers from October 3 to 5 at PRINT19 in Chicago. Both models will launch in December at around $ 4,695 USD (P7570) and $ 6,595 (P9570).

Epson adds textured paper to Legacy photo inkjet lineup

A new textured paper has been introduced to the Epson Legacy range of premium inkjet media that the company claims allows dense blacks, vibrant colors and ‘outstanding’ print permanence. Epson Legacy Textured Paper promises to ‘simulate old-world handcrafted watercolor papers’ with a heavily textured surface, according to Epson, and is aimed at photographers who exhibit and sell their work as art pieces.

No optical brighteners have been used in the paper, and Epson says that it will have excellent lightfast properties. Permanence figures are not quoted, as the paper is still being evaluated by Wilhelm Imaging Research.

The matte finish paper is 100% cotton, using randomly layered fibres to prevent curling in sheets as well as in long rolls, and will weigh 310 GSM. The paper is due to ship in December this year. For more information see the Epson website.

Epson Launches New Legacy Textured Paper

New Paper Provides Textured Surface and Matte Finish in Epson’s Distinguished Legacy Paper Line

Epson today introduced Legacy Textured, the latest addition to its sophisticated Legacy Paper line, offering the ultimate in quality and longevity for artists selling their work. Legacy Textured is comprised of a mould-made paper base that lays cotton fibers down randomly to virtually eliminate curl, and a heavily textured surface that simulates old-world handcrafted watercolor papers. Epson FastFoto FF-680W, world’s fastest personal photo scanner, now available

Epson has launched its new FastFoto FF-680W High-Speed Photo and Document Scanning System, a model it claims is the fastest personal photo scanner currently available. At max speed, the FastFoto FF-680W can scan a photo every second at 300dpi (up to 36 photos per batch).

The FF-680W, which builds upon the existing FF-640 model, supports a variety of media types, including Polaroids, postcards, and panoramic photos, as well as scanning in 300dpi (“easy sharing”), 600dpi TIFF (“archiving”), and 1200dpi (“enlarging”) modes. More than one mode can be used per photo batch. The scanner also supports document scanning with OCR.

Both USB and wireless connectivity is supported. Users can directly share scanned images to Google Drive and Dropbox, capture handwritten notes on the back of an image during a single scan, and perform modest photo restoration and edits using Epson’s ScanSmart software.

The Epson FastFoto FF-680W scanner is available through the company’s website and at select retailers, including Amazon, for $ 599.99 USD.

Epson doubles print life with its SureColor P5000 17in printer

Epson claims its new 17″ printer uses ink that has double the print-life of previous models and which produces a smoother, more even gloss finish. The SureColor P5000 features a choice to two 10-cartridge inksets so photographers and artists can prioritize durability while the commercial proofing market can prioritize color gamut.

The new machine replaces the Stylus Pro 4900 and brings Epson’s latest technology to the 17″ sector. It uses the company’s PrecisionCore TFP print head and the newest UltraChrome pigment inks – HDX. These inks have blacks which are 1.5x denser than previous sets, and use orange and green inks to expand the range of colors that can be produced. Epson also says that the new print head has an ink-repellent coating that helps to prevent ink sticking to it and clogging the nozzles.

The P5000 will accept sheet and roll media at the same time, and can be front-loaded with art board up to 1.5mm thick. A built-in rotary cutter automatically slices roll-fed images and Epson says that the printer can produce prints of up to 100 feet in length.

The difference between the Standard Edition for photographers and the Commercial Edition for proof printers is that the Light Light Black ink that delivers the extended permanence in the Standard Edition is replaced by a violet ink that Epson claims delivers ‘an industry-best 99 percent PANTONE® PLUS FORMULA GUIDE solid-coated color matching’. Both formulations cost the same $ 1995.

The SureColor P5000 leverages 200 mL UltraChrome HDX 10-color ink cartridges2 utilizing newly developed core pigments, including new Orange and Green inks, as well as Black inks that are 1.5 times denser than the previous generation, delivering a wider contrast ratio and improved resin encapsulation technology for superior gloss uniformity and optically clearer, sharper images. Touting a refined design, the SureColor P5000 supports a 10-channel PrecisionCore TFP printhead that includes a new ink-repellant surface coating, along with improved dust and static control for reduced nozzle clogging and maintenance, and supports printless nozzle checks for time, production and resource efficiency.

The SureColor P5000 can support two different ink configurations. The SureColor P5000 Standard and Designer editions leverage Light Light Black ink for twice the overall print permanence, smooth and neutral tonal transitions and support of the Epson Advanced Black and White print mode, ideal for photography, fine art and graphic design applications. The Commercial Edition includes Violet ink, in place of Light Light Black, for an expanded color gamut, to deliver an industry-best 99 percent PANTONE® PLUS FORMULA GUIDE solid-coated color matching3, ideal for commercial and flexographic proofing applications.

The SureColor P5000 offers versatile media handling capabilities with auto-switching between the high-capacity front paper cassette and roll media feeder. It includes a power-driven roll media spindle, ideal for producing panoramas and roll printing up to 100-feet, and an internal high-speed single pass rotary cutter. The high-capacity cassette can hold up to 100 sheets of premium paper for high productivity printing on sheets from 8”x10” up to 17”x22”. In addition, the SureColor P5000 features a front feed straight path for delicate fine art sheet media, including poster board, up to 1.5mm thick. Auto-switching between roll and cassette sheet feeding allow both sources to be loaded at the same time.

Epson announces mass production of 4.41m dot LCD likely used in Leica SL

Epson has announced its latest electronic viewfinder panel: a 4.41m dot SXGA+ display, a spec that may sound familiar to anyone who’s been reading about Leica’s SL full-frame mirrorless camera. Epson had shown a mockup of the panel at CP+ back in February 2015, and says the unit is now in mass production.

The 4.41m dot unit offers an SXGA+ display: 1,400 x 1,050 pixels. This equates to 1.87x as many pixels as the existing XGA viewfinders used in most high-end mirrorless cameras: a 36% increase in linear resolution. Everyone who’s used it at DPReview has been very impressed by the level of detail shown by the SL’s 4.41m dot viewfinder.

Leica has previously offered Epson-based EVFs as accessory finders for its X1 and X2 models, but these were likely to have been brought in from Olympus, given the similar styling and cross-compatibility with Olympus units. Considering the dot count and panel size (0.66″), it seems very probable that this is the LCD panel in the SL.

At present, most high-end EVFs we’ve seen are XGA 2.36m dot displays, using either LCD or OLED technologies. Olympus used LCD panels in its earlier OM-D cameras but has shifted towards OLED in its latest generation. Likewise, Fujfilm used LCDs in its X-Pro1 and X100 series models, only to embrace OLED across the rest of its range. Despite this shift, we’d be surprised if we didn’t start seeing this LCD panel in some of the higher-end mirrorless cameras over the coming year or so, especially given the greater longevity of LCD panels that Leica mentioned as its reason for choosing the technology.

That said, the 0.66″ panel size could limit its usage, since this is considerably larger than the 0.48″ LCD and 0.5″ OLEDs currently in use.

Epson introduces EcoTank printer range with two years of ink and low-cost refill bottles

That inkjet printer ink costs more than champagne is the frequent moan of anyone who has to replace their cartridges. Take heart though, as Epson has launched a range of printers called EcoTank that it claims will help users save 70% on home printing. The five new machines come with what Epson says is enough ink to last two years, and once empty the tanks can be refilled from a bottle instead of being replaced. Read more
