Firmware update: Olympus E-M1X gets bird AF along with Raw video

Olympus has announced a firmware update that will enhance the capabilities of its flagship E-M1X sports camera. Some of the features will be cascaded down to the E-M1 III, E-M1 II and E-M5 III.

Exclusive to the E-M1X is ‘Bird detection AF’, which expands the camera’s AI-trained subject recognition system. Bird AF will focus on the eyes of birds, or their bodies if the eye isn’t visible. This subject-aware AF can be used in conjunction with the camera’s Pro Capture pre-buffering mode, to increase your chances of getting the perfect birding shot.

Both the E-M1X and E-M1 III will gain the ability to output Raw video data streams that can be encoded as ProRes RAW if the cameras are connected to an Atomos Ninja V external recorder. The output is 12-bit with Olympus saying it allows ‘exposure adjustment,’ which we’re hoping means the resulting ProRes RAW footage will be compatible with a full range of post-shot adjustments.

These two cameras will also gain a ‘Focus Indicator Display’ mode that provides a focus guide, based on phase-detection distance information, when manually focusing.

In addition, the E-M1X, E-M1 III, E-M1 II and E-M5 III will all receive an update to improve the image stabilization performance while shooting video. The company explicitly mentions panning, which suggests it will be better at distinguishing between accidental and intentional camera movement. Finally, the firmware will provide all four cameras with the ability to use focus-stacking mode with the new 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO lens.

OM-D E-M1X Firmware Version 2.0 with Bird Detection

Bird detection has been added to Intelligent Subject Detection Autofocus, and can recognize a variety of birds of all sizes. When using this version of firmware, the camera focuses primarily on the bird’s eye and switches to detect and track the bird’s head or body if its eye is not detected. This feature performs well even in birds’ natural habitats, where trees, plants and other obstructions tend to come between photographer and subject, allowing the photographer to concentrate on framing. This functionality can be used in conjunction with Pro Capture, which is also a popular feature for photographing birds. Pro Capture mode virtually eliminates shutter lag and reaction time by recording sequential frames before the shutter release is pressed fully, and ensures the camera never misses decisive moments, as when a bird takes flight or captures its prey. Birds are detected across the entire AF coverage area when shooting with all M.Zuiko® Digital lenses, inclusive of super telephoto zoom lenses. The functionality works even at the periphery of the screen, offering a greater level of freedom for framing.

RAW Video Data Output to the Atomos Ninja V HDR Monitor Recorder

4K 30P/25P/24P and Cinema 4K 24P video recorded on the OM-D E-M1X can be output as 12-bit RAW data and recorded in ProRes RAW format on the Atomos Ninja V HDR monitor recorder, enabling advanced professional video production post-processing tasks, such as adjusting exposure and color grading of recorded footage. Focus Stacking Support for the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO Lens

With this firmware, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO supports in-camera Focus Stacking, bringing the total to 11[i] compatible lenses.

Improved Video Image Stabilization Performance

The video image stabilization algorithm has been updated for natural recording with minimal shake, even when panning.

Supports Focus Indicator Display

This feature makes it possible to quickly check the focusing direction and approximate focus position during manual focusing.

Atomos, Olympus working to bring ProRes RAW to E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III by end of year

Atomos and Olympus have teamed up to announce the duo is co-developing firmware updates that will enable ProRes RAW footage to be captured on the OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras when paired with the Atomos Ninja V over HDMI.

This partnership is the latest in many that have seen numerous cameras gain ProRes RAW output over HDMI when recording to an Atomos Ninja V recorder, including the Sigma fp, Fujifilm GFX100 and many others. The announcement doesn’t lay out the video specifications that will be able to be captured, nor a date we can expect the firmware updates to go live, but the press release says we can expect them before the end of 2020.

We’ll be sure to share an update article when the firmware updates go live later this year.

Atomos announces ProRes RAW support for Olympus OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras

September 15, Melbourne, Australia: Atomos is excited to announce co-development with Olympus of RAW recording over HDMI with the OM-D E-M1X and Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras. Together these powerful Olympus cameras and the Atomos Ninja V will record Apple ProRes RAW directly from the camera’s sensor.

Olympus users who love the OM-D family for its portability and in-body 5-axis image stabilization will get all the benefits of a ProRes RAW workflow – creative control to adjust the color and look of the video in post-production while extending brightness and shadow detail.

The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the image in HDR quality with a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing users to perfect their shot setup. The Ninja V then records the ProRes RAW data onto a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. When shooting is complete the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate offload and editing.

ProRes RAW the new standard:

ProRes RAW is now firmly established as the new standard for RAW video capture, with Olympus being the eighth brand to support the format with the OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras. ProRes RAW combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. Both ProRes RAW, and the higher bandwidth, less compressed ProRes RAW HQ are supported. Manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. ProRes RAW is fully supported in Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight and Grass Valley Edius.

Understanding Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X High Res Shot modes

Olympus has introduced several groundbreaking technologies in its cameras over the years, including high-performance multi-axis stabilization, and high-resolution shot modes, which combined multiple exposures to create a single, much larger final image.

The technology is complex, but the idea behind the classic tripod high res shot mode (introduced in the OM-D E-M5 Mark II) is simple: the camera’s sensor is shifted in minute increments across multiple exposures, so that the scene is ‘covered’ by more pixels. Those images are then combined in-camera to create a single, higher resolution photograph.

The Olympus E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X offer two high-res shot modes, ‘Tripod’ and ‘Handheld’

Today’s flagship OM-D E-M1X and E-M1 Mark III include the latest iteration of this feature, alongside a new mode: ‘Handheld high Res Shot’. Handheld High Res Shot mode enables ultra high-resolution images to be captured without the need for a tripod.

In Handheld High Res Shot mode, blur from camera shake is avoided thanks to a powerful in-camera stabilization system, which compensates for any accidental camera movement during this process.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X feature a powerful inbuilt stabilization system. This system is also used in the cameras High Res Shot modes.

Choosing the right High Res Shot mode

The E-M1 Mark III’s high-res shot modes are available for those times when you want more than the camera’s normal resolution of 20MP. Which of the two modes you choose will depend on the kind of subject you want to capture.

With both the OM-D E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X, the maximum output resolution of 80MP is available in ‘Tripod’ mode, while in ‘Handheld’ it is possible to capture images of up to 50MP.


Tripod mode (max 80MP)

This is a great mode for architecture, interiors and still life or reproduction work – basically, any scene where nothing in your subject is moving. With your camera steady on a tripod, and a stationary scene, you’ll be able to get the maximum resolution out of the system.

In ‘Tripod’ High Res Shot mode, the E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X’s sensor is shifted in tiny increments across multiple exposures. These exposures are automatically combined in-camera to create an 80MP file.

In this mode, your camera shifts the sensor eight times, in increments of one micron, capturing one exposure per adjustment. These images are then combined automatically to create a single 80MP photograph in either JPEG and / or Raw file format.

Use for:

  • Architecture
  • Landscape (on a still day)
  • Interiors
  • Still life
  • Macro
  • Night sky

Handheld mode (max 50MP)

  • Download Handheld High res shot mode (50MP) sample
  • Download conventional (20MP) sample

Handheld mode is great for situations where you want more resolution, but you either don’t have a tripod handy, or you want to shoot something where slight movement in your image is unavoidable, like a posed portrait, or landscapes.

In ‘Handheld’ High Res Shot mode, the E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X capture 16 images in quick succession, and combine them to create a 50MP file. The cameras’ powerful inbuilt stabilization system is employed to reduce the risk of shake.

In this mode, the E-M1 Mark III captures 16 exposures very rapidly, totaling 320MP of data, and combines them to create a single 50MP image. The sensor-based stabilization system does double-duty, turning on and off throughout the sequence of exposures, helping to prevent excessive movement due to motion blur, and analyzing the amount of camera movement that occurs during the sequence. The camera uses this information to automatically align the images for the final image and clone out any blurred areas.

If too much motion is detected, the camera will flash a warning to let you know.

Use for:

  • Landscapes
  • Portraits (static)
  • General photography at wide / medium focal lengths
  • Any situation where a tripod isn’t practical / allowed

Tips for using High Res Shot modes

  • With the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X it is possible to hand-hold exposures down to four seconds*. Used in combination with Handheld High Res Shot mode, this makes it possible to capture long exposure nighttime photographs.
  • For best results with Handheld High Res Shot mode, shoot at wide and medium focal lengths, where the image stabilization system of the OM-D E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X is most effective.
  • Because it combines 16 exposures, Handheld High Res Shot mode also cancels out a lot of noise. Try switching to handheld High Res mode in low light situations for better image quality at high ISO settings.
  • When shooting in High Res Shot mode, avoid shooting at very wide apertures, especially for scenes with out of focus objects in the foreground. You’ll get best results at smaller apertures, where more of your scene is in focus.

Interview: Award-Winnng Wildlife Photographer Buddy Eleazer on why he chose the Olympus OM-D E-M1X

Recently, we spoke to award-winning photographer and Olympus shooter Buddy Eleazer about his work, what inspires him, and what he needs from his camera gear when shooting wildlife on African safaris.


How long have you been a working photographer?

I was an active hobby photographer in the 70’s, but got back into photography seriously in 2003 with the advent of digital cameras.

What camera equipment do you currently shoot with?

Right now I’m shooting with two OM-D E-M1X bodies, an M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm F4 IS PRO, both the M.Zuiko MC-20 1.4x and M.Zuiko MC-20 2.0x teleconverters, and my workhorse lens which is the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO, with some other ‘PRO’ series lenses. Especially the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 PRO and the M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm F2.8 PRO.

When I’m close to the wildlife, the 40-150mm is perfect. When I’m further away I use the 300mm.

What drew you to the OM-D system?

I’m a fairly recent convert to Olympus – I used to be a ‘full frame guy’. I still love that gear, but there are some definite advantages to the OM-D system. Shooting full frame cameras with prime and zoom telephoto lenses created two problems: a) getting my gear onto flights to and within Africa – especially the smaller planes we fly into the lodges such as the Bombardier Dash 8 and Cessna 203 Caravan prop planes, and b) after a few weeks on safari, my right elbow and both shoulders took weeks to lose the soreness from lifting those big lenses.

I’ve been shooting with Olympus since early 2018. That doesn’t sound like a long time, but with nature photography and leading trips to Africa, that’s over 59,000 images ago.

This was a special moment. You never know what’s going to happen on safari, and when things do happen, they can happen very quickly. We were looking at Wildebeest walking left to right, near a water crossing. Suddenly, for no reason that was apparent to me they started running – right to left.

I’d been shooting some panning photographs of them walking so I had the E-M1X set perfectly at 1/30sec with the 40-150mm F2.8 and suddenly they turned and started coming almost right for me. I was clicking away, and as the wildebeest cleared and I could see what was happening, right there in the middle of them was a leopard. The attack had happened right in front of my eyes but there were so many wildebeest in the way I didn’t see it.


How would you describe your style of photography?

I describe myself now as a nature photographer. I love both landscape and wildlife, but in recent years have focused primarily on wildlife with emphasis on African wildlife and North American birds.

I came from landscape photography originally, and I still really enjoy including the landscape in my wildlife photography. I also really like tight details of animals, too. What I teach people in the field is get the safe shot first, but don’t shoot 100 versions of that. Let’s get a tight shot, let’s look for details, the trunk, the feet or tail or something. And then let’s get creative – maybe a panning shot, or something high key. There are lot of those kinds of pictures in my portfolio: what you might call ‘sense of place’ shots, tight shots, panning and so on.

What’s your major priority when selecting camera equipment?

As a wildlife photographer, I have a few key requirements. These include:

  • My lenses must be fast to focus
  • The lenses should be tack sharp when in focus
  • I need my camera to be able to track accurately, especially for birds in flight
  • The camera needs to be able to focus and deliver acceptable images in very early morning and very late afternoon light – when wildlife is often on the move.

A closer look at the Olympus OM-D E-M1X

Buddy shoots with the E-M1X, Olympus’ flagship camera, designed for professional and enthusiast photographers in the sports and wildlife fields. Using powerful processors and ‘deep learning’ AF technology, the E-M1X is blazingly fast and offers the most advanced autofocus system of any OM-D camera. It’s also among the toughest cameras of its type, rated for use in extreme conditions with IPX1-certified weather-sealed construction.

The E-M1X is among the first cameras on the market with AF modes trained to identify specific subjects. Specifically, aircraft, locomotives, and wheeled vehicles (commonly referred to as planes, trains, and automobiles).

The E-M1X features a 121-point all-cross-type on-chip Phase Detection plus Contrast Detection AF system. The on-chip Phase Detection AF allows for high-precision AF even when shooting with high speed lenses.

These modes are smart enough to not only track the outline of say, someone riding a motorcycle, but actually focus on the rider’s helmet, or the cockpit of the plane. For scenes with multiple planes or motorcycles, the camera will settle for the largest in the frame. However, if you’d like the option to toggle between subjects, you can leave the camera in Single Point and manually place your point over the further subject – the camera will then prioritize tracking them instead.

How does your style of photography inform your gear choices?

I switched to Olympus because the size and weight allowed me to travel easier and hand-hold up to the equivalent of 600mm.

I’ve always loved panning shots but they’re really hard to do with big cameras and lenses. With these light, small lenses, there’s so little effort, comparatively, to stabilize them as you move. There’s in-body stabilization which is good to begin with but with a fast moving animal you need to stay with it in order to get a sharp shot, and the heavier the gear the harder it is to do that. With this OM-D gear it’s literally just like turning your head.

The weight of a system for wildlife photography isn’t in the camera body, it’s in the lenses

I came from full-frame professional DSLRs, and those things are bricks. They wear your body out. The E-M1X is similar in weight to something like a midrange full-frame DSLR, and fits my hand very comfortably.

The weight of a system for wildlife photography isn’t actually in the camera body, it’s in the lenses. The camera is close to your body, but the weight is in the lenses, which extend forward, outwards from you. The weight of the glass in a big full-frame lens is considerable. Shooting the E-M1X with the 300mm F4, which is 600mm equivalent, is like shooting a DSLR with something like a 70-200mm attached. It’s very comfortable.

The PRO Capture mode on the E-M1X has also been a game changer for capturing birds and other animals at the precise moment when the action occurs.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as a photographer?

Really there are a few key pieces of advice that have guided me. First, find your own voice with your images. It’s okay to shoot iconic locations, but be creative and put your own spin on the subjects. Second, always seek to simplify the composition. Less is more. Third, know the rules of composition. They should only be guidelines, but if you know them, then you know why you give them respect and know exactly what you are trying to achieve when you are breaking those rules.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to make it as a photographer today?

If you want to be a commercial photographer, listen to your client. Make sure you know what they want before you get too carried away with the assignment. And know your gear. To be successful, you have to be looking through the camera at the subject. You must be able to adjust aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation while still looking through that viewfinder.

What draws you to Africa?

I go about 6-8 times a year. Primarily I focus on Southern Africa, although about once a year I’ll go to Eastern Africa, to Botswana. Every second year I’ll go to Namibia, but mostly I’m focused on South Africa and Botswana. I like the reserves there, and I know the guides.

What I really like about Southern Africa is how close you can get to the animals. The lodges I focus on have off-road tracking, so you can position a vehicle perfectly for the lighting. You can get off-road and into position. Also because the reserves have been there for some time, the animals are habituated, they don’t get stressed if they see people or vehicles.

In Botswana I love shooting near the water. I really love low-angle shots. Obviously if you’re in a vehicle you have to aim for things up on a hill, to really get low, but if you’re in a hide or you’re on the water, you can get really low, down on the gunnels of the boat and shoot right at water level. Bird life, elephants crossing, buffalo drinking or whatever happens to be there. It’s really cool.

Firmware upgrade brings features from Olympus’s E-M1X to the E-M1 Mark II

Olympus has released a major firmware update for its nearly three-year-old OM-D E-M1 Mark II. Many of the additions come straight from the company’s flagship E-M1X, so now you can have a camera that shares many of the same features but in a much smaller package.

The most significant features include:

  • Autofocus
    • Autofocus algorithms from the E-M1X improves performance tracking moving subjects and makes S-AF more accurate
    • Group 25-point AF mode added; Center priority mode sticks to center focus point and will use surrounding points if subject moves ‘vigorously’
    • ‘Active use’ of PDAF improves performance when shooting video
    • Camera can now focus down to -6EV when using an F1.2 lens
  • Image quality
    • A new ‘Detail Priority’ mode reduces noise (at the expense of burst speed) at low ISOs in JPEGs
    • High ISO performance has been improved by 1/3-stop, according to Olympus
    • ISO 100 (Low) added
    • Anti-flicker mode added
  • Other
    • OM-Log400 added for more flexibility for color grading in video

Finally, Olympus has updated its Workspace software to version 1.1. The big new feature is the ability to edit Raw images over USB, with the camera doing the processing. Other updates include Focus Stacking from images taken in Focus Bracketing mode and the ability to create Live Composite images.

Version 3.0 for the OM-D® E-M1 Mark II, Version 1.1 for the OM-D E-M1X and Version 1.1 for Olympus® Workspace

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., June 19, 2019 – Olympus is pleased to announce availability of the latest firmware upgrade for two interchangeable lens cameras, Version 3.0 for the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and Version 1.1 for the Olympus OM-D E-M1X. Additionally, Firmware Version 1.1 is now available for Olympus Workspace. OM-D E-M1 Mark II firmware Version 3.0 adds high-precision autofocus (AF) performance and the high image quality currently available on Olympus’ newest OM-D, the E-M1X. Specifically designed for the professional models in the OM-D series, the OM-D E-M1 Mark II and OM-D E-M1X, this new firmware provides feature enhancements for photographers who require portability and smooth operation of the camera when shooting.

OM-D E-M1 Mark II Firmware Version 3.0: Main Features

Advanced AF Performance

This upgrade utilizes the OM-D E-M1X algorithm, which was developed based on the shooting needs of the professional photographer. With the goal of achieving performance that responds to demanding shooting conditions, such as fast movement in sports, etc., C-AF Center Priority delivers high-precision tracking of moving subjects and sudden subject movement. AF precision for still subjects when using S-AF is improved for various subjects compared to OM-D E-M1 Mark II firmware Version 2.3. Active use of information from the On-chip Phase Detection AF sensor also improves AF performance while shooting video.

Newest AutoFocus Features

Group 25-point has been added to AF Target, and is effective for photographing birds and other small subjects. C-AF Center Priority is now available, and repeatedly autofocuses with priority on the center point in Group 5-point, Group 9-point, and Group 25-point. If AF is not possible in the center point, the peripheral points in the group area assists, which is effective for subjects that move around quickly. In addition, C-AF+MF1 is included which allows users to instantly switch to MF by turning the focus ring while in C-AF for fine tuning the focus.

Low Light Limit Update

The AF low light limit when an f/1.2 lens is attached is -6.0 EV (ISO 100 equivalent for S-AF), enabling high precision focusing in both dark scenes and for low-contrast subjects.

Improved Image Quality

Low ISO Processing (Detail Priority) has been added for higher resolution when shooting at low ISO sensitivity[1], making it possible to reduce noise while shooting with low ISO settings. Compared with OM-D E-M1 Mark II firmware Version 2.3, noise that occurs when shooting at high ISO sensitivity is improved approximately 1/3 of a step.

USB RAW Data Edit[2] is now supported for much faster RAW processing in Olympus Workspace by connecting the camera to a computer to use the power of the OM-D E-M1 Mark II TruePic™ VIII image processor.

Is the Olympus E-M1X right for you?

Our comprehensive Olympus E-M1X review is live if you’d like to dive deep into the camera’s image quality, handling and autofocus performance. But for a more straightforward take on the E-M1X, here’s how well-suited it is for a few popular photographic use cases:

Sports and wildlife

Fast burst shooting, reliable autofocus and controls that don’t require you to take your eye from the finder – these are just some of the things you’ll want from a camera if capturing peak action is your aim. The E-M1X is advertised as a professional-grade sports and wildlife camera and it mostly lives up to this billing. Plus it’s got an enormous family of telephoto lenses to complement its aspirations.

Many sports and wildlife photographers rely on continuous autofocus and the E-M1X can shoot up to 10 fps (mechanical shutter) and 18 fps (electronic shutter) in AF-C. Continuous autofocus performance is good, but other sports cameras like the Nikon D5 and Canon 1DX II offer slightly more reliable results. Still, subject tracking is impressively sticky and the camera’s buffer depth is also solid. If you’re okay with focus being locked after the first frame it can do 15 fps (mechanical shutter) and 60 fps (e-shutter) – just be aware that using the e-shutter can result in banding under certain lighting and rolling shutter (though this is fairly well-controlled).

The camera’s ergonomics are excellent, full stop. I’s one of a handful of bodies on the market with built-in vertical controls. Whether shooting vertically or horizontally, dialing in settings can be done without removing your eye from the finder. Speaking of the finder, it’s not the highest-resolution nor does it offer the highest contrast on the market, but it does offer a fast refresh rate and only minimal resolution loss while the shutter’s pressed, making it easy to follow fast-moving subjects. The camera’s also got a tank-like build and IPX1-rated weather-sealing. The only thing truly missing from this pro-level body is a top plate info display.

Image quality is excellent for its sensor size – with lovely out-of-camera JPEGs – but it can’t match the resolution of higher-resolution cameras, limiting your ability to crop in post. Similarly, shadow noise at higher ISOs is more prevalent than on larger-sensor bodies – this also limits your ability to push the exposure in post.

Landscape photography

High resolution is normally the name of the game when it comes to landscape photography, and we’re not going to pretend the E-M1X’s Four Thirds chips can match the resolution or image quality of larger sensors… on its own. But this camera has some tricks up its sleeve, including a 50MP hand-held high-resolution mode and an 80MP tripod-based high-resolution mode. The latter combines 8 images and even has the benefit of improved noise performance over a standalone file. However you’ll want to avoid scenes with a lot of movement when using either high-res mode.

The E-M1X also has some other nifty tricks landscape photographers will appreciate: there’s a ‘live ND’ filter for long exposure simulations and various in-camera time-lapse options. Sadly, the two can’t be combined.

In terms of ergonomics, the E-M1X is a bit of a beast to carry around for long periods of time. On the other hand, it’s got excellent weather-sealing and a tough build, so it’s doubtful the camera will let you down in nasty conditions. Plus a fully-articulating screen is great for high and low shots, and battery life is solid thanks to twin batteries.

Wedding and event photography

For those already invested in Micro Four Thirds, the E-M1X could be a great addition to your wedding or event shooting kit. Vertical controls are extremely handy for shooting portraits. And the camera’s Face Detect and Eye Detect both work with good reliability if your subject fills most of the frame. Wedding ceremonies are moments when the E-M1X’s truly-silent e-shutter could be invaluable. And we doubt you’ll be able to chew through both the camera’s batteries, even with a full day of shooting.

The E-M1X is compatible with Olympus’ flash system, however as of writing, there are no Olympus flash units that can fire an AF assist beam without triggering the strobe – something wedding and event photographers often rely on for precise autofocus in very dark scenarios. Still, the camera’s high-resolution modes can be handy for detail shots of say, a dress or the bridal bouquet.

Portrait photography

As with landscape photography, resolution is also an important factor for portrait photographers. So right off the bat, the E-M1X is at a disadvantage here over its larger-sensor competition. And don’t count on the high-res modes to save the day – these are intended for static subjects, not people. Still, vertical controls are handy for shooting in the traditional portraiture orientation and the E-M1X’s Face and Eye detect both work well.

We’re also fans of Olympus’ JPEG rendition of skin tones. Plus, if you’re shooting portraits using controlled lighting, shadow noise shouldn’t be an issue. There’s also a wide range of excellent portrait-appropriate glass available for this system.

Video

The E-M1X is a sports and action-oriented camera, so why use it for video? Here are a few compelling reasons: It can shoot good-looking Cinema 4K (24p only) as well as 1080/120p slow motion footage. It offers a fully-articulating touchscreen with sticky video AF. And the camera’s Sensor+Digital image stabilization offers the smoothest in-camera, hand-held shooting we’ve experienced (it does come with a slight crop, though).

Other call-outs include headphone and microphone ports, Flat profiles and Log capture. Sadly the latter is limited to 8-bit compared to 10-bit offered by some of its peers. This means you won’t get the same video dynamic range as say, a Panasonic Lumix GH5. Still, for more-casual filmmaking, without the need for a tripod or stabilization rig, the E-M1X can be a solid option.

The wrap

The Olympus OM-D E-M1X is a sports and action camera that also happens to function quite well for a number of other photographic situation. However for most of these scenarios, unless you’re already invested in the system, there are other cameras that will likely serve you better for less money.

But back to sports and action. For way less money, the E-M1X shoots faster than even the most expensive sports cameras, like the Nikon D5 or Canon 1DX II, while offering similar ergonomics and build quality. It doesn’t quite offer the same level of autofocus reliability as these cameras, nor can it match the resolution/noise performance of their larger sensors. Still, it’s an outstanding choice for Micro Four Thirds shooters who want a no-compromise camera to point at fast-moving subjects. And if you end up also photographing portraits, landscapes, events or video, well, the camera will be able to handle that too.

Olympus E-M1X vs Nikon D5: shooting tennis

The Olympus E-M1X sits in a curious spot in the market: it’s got the speed, rugged build-quality and dual-grip design of a full-frame Nikon D5 or a Canon EOS-1D X II, but sports a smaller Four Thirds chip. The smaller sensor is reflected in a smaller price tag; at $ 3000, it’s half the price of the D5 and $ 2500 less than the 1D X II. That’s a lot of savings that could be put toward high quality glass. But the D5 and 1D X II are sports cameras with long lineages, whereas the E-M1X is Olympus’ first crack at a truly sports-oriented camera. So can it compete? To find out we pitted it against the D5 at a University of Washington tennis match.

Tennis is a sport for which a good viewfinder experience, fast/reliable autofocus and a quick burst rate with plenty of buffer depth are important for success. It’s also a sport for which I’ve found Nikon’s 3D Tracking to be particularly useful. Having had a lot of success shooting tennis with a D5, I was eager to get behind the E-M1X and see how it compared.

Burst Speed

There’s a lot of nuance to nailing a perfect tennis photo: the ideal frame is often the split second after or before the ball touches the strings of an athlete’s racket. Tennis rackets swing at between 110-140kph (70-85mph) and more frames means better odds of getting the the shot. With this in mind, the E-M1X’s 18 fps gave a noticeable advantage over the Nikon’s 12 fps rate (top bursts with AF).

And if you’re OK with focus being locked on the first frame, the E-M1X can shoot up to a whopping 60 fps. There’s a catch though: both the 18 fps and 60 fps options are using the electronic shutter, which can be susceptible to banding under artificial lights (like a gym) and rolling shutter. Fortunately these issues can be mostly avoided by using the mechanical shutter, you’ll just have to settle for 10 fps with AF. Ultimately I decided the benefits of the faster 18 fps rate outweighed my desire to avoid rolling shutter (which ended up having a minimal impact).

While the Olympus had the speed advantage, nothing for me beats the ‘kurchunk’ of the D5’s beefy shutter.

While the Olympus had the speed advantage, it was a tie for buffer depth: despite shooting Raw+JPEG on both cameras, I never hit a point where either slowed down. That said, when it came to the adrenaline rush of firing off a fast burst of images, nothing for me beats the ‘kurchunk’ of the D5’s beefy shutter mechanism.

Viewfinder experience

Electronic viewfinders on mirrorless cameras keep improving and despite the E-M1X’s somewhat modest EVF resolution (2.36M-dot compared to 5.76M-dot on the latest mirrorless cameras) and low contrast (it uses LCD instead of OLED display technology) the experience of using it to capture fast action is excellent.

Whether shooting 10 fps in mechanical or 18 fps in e-shutter, black-out times are minimal. And there’s no noticeable resolution drop or slowdown in refresh rate when AF is engaged to distract your eyes from the action. This isn’t the case for lots of other mirrorless cameras.

However, for serious sports shooters who operate with both eyes open, the D5’s large optical finder (with very short blackout times) still provides a better viewfinder experience, in my opinion. It’s possible to shoot the Olympus with both eyes open, but I found it to be rather jarring. This is because the limited brightness and contrast of the EVF means what you see in your EVF eye never quite agrees with what you see with your real-world-viewing eye.

So when it comes to the viewfinder experience, the E-M1X impresses for a mirrorless camera, but the D5 still has it beat.

Autofocus

Of all the cameras in the world, the D5’s become my first choice for shooting anything moving thanks to its ridiculously reliable AF performance. And it’s no surprise that its autofocus system shone once more during the tennis match. Whether using a single point, zone or 3D Tracking, I enjoyed a 95%+ hit rate with the D5.

I used a combination of similar AF settings on the E-M1X, including a single point, zone and AF tracking – the latter impressed me with its stickiness. And ultimately, my hit rate was around 80%; this was after maxing out AF-C sensitivity early in the match.

The E-M1X’s AF system doesn’t feel quite as reliable as the D5’s or even the 1D X II’s

While these hit rates aren’t vastly different, the way in which the cameras missed shots is worth noting. With the Nikon, the very few shots it missed were usually toward the start of a burst and focus mostly corrected itself within a few frames. With the Olympus, slightly miss-focused shots seem to be sprinkled throughout otherwise in-focus bursts. This made picking my selects tricky – on more than one occasion that random missed shot coincided with my frame of choice. Sigh.

Ultimately, the E-M1X’s AF system doesn’t feel quite as reliable as the D5’s or even the 1D X II’s. The hit rate is good, but not great. So while Canon and Nikon compete in the autofocus big leagues, it seems Olympus is still working its way up through the minor leagues.

Ergonomics

While the E-M1X concedes ground to the D5 in AF, it holds its own in terms of ergonomics. Both of these cameras are large – and a little intimidating to operate at first – but offer outstanding degrees of customization and excellent comfort, even after extended use. The Nikon seems a little tougher-built, but also weighs ~1.5x the Olympus. Ultimately, I get the impression either camera could stand up to the abuse of shooting in a torrential downpour (the E-M1X is IPX1-rated), or being slammed to the ground by a runaway wide receiver along the sidelines.

Given the difference in sensor size, a difference in image quality shouldn’t be much of a surprise. The Nikon D5 has 3.84x the sensor area of the E-M1X and therefore offers substantially better noise performance and tonal quality. This means files from the D5 will stand up to image processing and being cropped-in better than E-M1X files. The latter was definitely in the back of my mind during the shoot. As someone who’s used to shooting sports for local publications, I’ve grown accustomed to leaving some wiggle room in my framing – after all, it’s better to have to crop-in than to miss a moment completely.

The JPEG profiles from both these brands are excellent.

I think this fact led me to subconsciously overcompensate during the match, because many of my shots on the E-M1X ended up slightly too zoomed in. Oops.

In addition to the above, a good sports camera should also offer good out-of-camera JPEGs. When shooting on a deadline, there’s often no time to process or transmit Raw files: what comes out-of-camera is going to have to do. Fortunately, the JPEG profiles from both these brands are excellent: case-in-point, I didn’t bother processing the Raws for this story.

Lenses

The E-M1X’s smaller sensor gives it the advantage of using smaller/lighter glass than the D5, but at the cost of slower equivalent apertures, which means noisier or less detailed images and less subject separation. That said, Olympus makes plenty of reasonably-fast, high quality telephoto lenses. The 40-150mm F2.8, one of the lenses I used during the match, offered excellent reach and a reasonably fast maximum aperture (even in equivalent terms), in a fairly small, light package – something that could be a plus if you’re trying to cut weight from your kit.

Nikon’s lenses on the other hand offer faster equiv. maximum apertures, allowing for cleaner images and more background separation. But many are heftier to lug.

All things considered, the E-M1X is a decent choice for sports, action and wildlife photographers seeking the ergonomics of the D5 in a more reasonably-priced package. While you won’t quite get the AF reliability or superior image quality of Nikon’s flagship, you will get a faster top burst speed and a lighter kit to carry.

Those seeking the D5’s level of AF reliability would likely be better served by the Nikon D500.

Ultimately, I feel like those seeking the D5’s level of AF reliability would likely be better served by the Nikon D500 than the E-M1X: it’s more than a $ 1000 cheaper than Olympus’ flagship and sports a larger APS-C sensor and 10 fps continuous shooting with an autofocus system nearly as dependable as the D5’s. Plus, you can always pick up the vertical grip attachment for it if you need that portrait-orientation layout.
