09 Jun

DSC_2676

Just got the 2 head kit, looks like a great piece of gear.  Full review forthcoming as soon as I get a couple of shoots down with it.  Initial impressions are *wow*  It puts out an amazing amount of *quality* light for such a tiny package.

the solution to the elinchrom quadra umbrella mount

08 Jun

When I was looking at reviews of the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra, one of the most common complaints people seemed to have was the fact that they couldn’t mount standard umbrellas on it (Elinchrom uses a 7mm umbrella shaft, while most others in the US use an 8mm shaft).

Now this seemed kind of silly to me – first off, the Quadra head is extremely small and lightweight – hanging anything larger than a *tiny* umbrella off it just seems like a recipe for disaster.   Secondly I thought to myself “I mount umbrellas on speedlights all the time and they have no umbrella holder whatsoever – why is the quadra any different?”  The solution:

The plain ol’ vanilla Umbrella Swivel.  Beloved of “Strobists” everywhere, it provides a secure slot/mount for the umbrella, placing the weight & torque on itself rather than the strobe head.  Screw in a post on top, plop the Quadra head on that and good to go.  You can even still use the angle of the quadra head itself to hit the sweet spot of the umbrella.

Personally this is just fine for me.  works great for my umbrellas, Apollo softboxes and Softliters…but let’s say you need the light more “on axis” with the umbrella shaft (maybe to fit the hole in one of the new PLM diffusion screens for instance…)  I found the easiest thing is to simply take a second swivel, and use it to “hang” the head off the umbrella shaft itself.  The head is light enough that it doesn’t put undue strain on the shaft (or the swivel).

Kinda kludgy but it works.  Personally I don’t bother – mounting it on the swivel itself is quick, easy and gets the job done with hardware that I’m already carrying anyway for my speedlights.

So there you have it:  Mounting umbrellas on the Quadra made easy!

Elinchrom launches new Rotagrid accessory for its signature Rotalux softbox line

25 Oct

Elinchrom has unveiled Rotagrids, a new lineup of add-on grids designed specifically for the company’s Rotalux softboxes. As is the case for most every grid modifier, the Rotagrid accessories create a more direct light for greater control while also minimizing light spill.

The Rotagrid attachments offer 30-degree beam angle grids and are made from what Elinchrom describes as a lightweight but durable fabric that will hold its shape over time. The grid uses hook and loop fasteners to attach to the front of Rotalux softboxes and can be stored in a pouch when not in use.

Elinchrom is offering the Rotagrid modifiers in every shape and size for the Rotalux softbox line, including the Octa, Square, Strip and other shapes. Prices vary based on the model; the smaller 35 x 100cm (14 x 35in) Rotagrid Strip, for example, is priced at $ 79 / €69, whereas the large Rotagrid Octa 135cm (69in) is priced at $ 249 / €199.

Elinchrom will skip Photokina this year, other brands may follow suit

10 Apr
High-end lighting brand Profoto is also rumored to be dropping out of Photokina 2018, but Elinchrom is the first to officially announce it will be sitting this one out. Credit: Photokina

Swiss lighting company Elinchrom has officially decided to “take a breather” from Photokina 2018. The flash maker cited two reasons: the fact that the photo industry is “going through major changes”, and Photokina’s decision to reposition itself as an annual trade show in order to better reflect the “fast-paced and briefer innovation cycles” of digital technology.

“After close to 30 successive participations we feel this is a transitional year for photokina,” writes CEO Simon Whittle in a statement on the Elinchrom website. “This break will help Elinchrom to analyze and refocus on what is really important for our customers in the coming years.”

The decision makes sense—this year’s show will only be four days long instead of six, there’s less exhibition space, and Photokina 2019 will take place just eight months after Photokina 2018—but it still comes as a surprise that a major lighting brand would sit out one of the largest photo industry trade shows in the world. Even more surprising, rumors have been circulating that Elinchrom will not be the only brand to skip this year’s exhibition.

According to DIY Photography, rumors that major brands like Profoto and maybe even Canon could drop out of Photokina 2018 first surfaced during The Photography Show in the UK last month.

The Profoto rumor we might believe, but the idea that Canon would skip even a pared-down Photokina seems far-fetched. With all rumors and teasers and coy interview answers pointing towards the release of full-frame mirrorless cameras from both Canon and Nikon sometime this year, we’d be very surprised indeed if one or both of the big two dropped out. Still, we might be in for a much quieter Photokina this September.

You can read Elinchrom’s full statement below:

Elinchrom Take a Breather From Photokina.

It goes without saying that the photo industry is going through major changes; photographer’s habits and expectations are evolving so rapidly.

In order to respond to this new environment, the photokina international exhibition has repositioned itself as an annual event to be held over 4 days in September this year, and then annually each May from 2019.

“After close to 30 successive participations we feel this is a transitional year for photokina and this break will help Elinchrom to analyse and refocus on what is really important for our customers in the coming years.” said Simon Whittle, CEO of Elinchrom.

The launch of the ground-breaking ELB 1200 location stills and video light and the ELB 500 TTL is proof of Elinchrom’s commitment to their customers.

Full information on the complete Elinchrom range remains accessible on-line and locally from Elinchrom’s Distributor and Retail network, throughout the year.

Godox to introduce Elinchrom mount version of AD600 TTL studio flash

08 Nov

Chinese flash manufacturer Godox has posted an instruction manual on its website that suggests it is about to introduce a version of its Witstro AD600 TTL battery-powered studio flash head with an Elinchrom mount. According to the manual, the AD600E head is exactly the same as its existing AD600/A600B other than the Godox or Bowen’s mount has been switched so the head will accept Elinchrom mount accessories.

There is nothing to suggest that the company plans to introduce a manual version of the Elinchrom-mount head, so all control will be TTL via the Godox wireless radio system.
No release date is given on the manufacturer’s website, but we should expect the head to cost around $ 750 like the existing models.

Elinchrom ELB 1200 portable flash system to launch this summer

02 Mar

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_9219200983″,”galleryId”:”9219200983″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Elinchrom has introduced its new ELB 1200 portable lighting system for photographers, a model that builds upon the company’s existing ELB 400 system introduced in 2015. The new system features three new flash heads, the Action, Hi-Sync, and Pro, as well as a TSA-approved ‘Air’ lithium-ion battery capable of powering 215 full-power flashes and 80 minutes of continuous LED use.

In addition to the TSA-approved ‘Air’ version of the battery, Elinchrom also has an ‘HD’ version with a higher capacity that can power 400 full-power flashes and 120 minutes of continuous light. The batteries are also capable of powering accessories via a 5v USB outlet, and they can both be switched into a ‘shipping mode’ for long distance travel.

The three aforementioned flash heads feature a daylight-balanced and dimmable LED CRI 92 lamp, which Elinchrom says is equivalent to a 250w Halogen lamp. The Hi-Sync flash head supports shutter speeds as fast as 1/8000s. The company expects the ELB 1200 to be available in the ‘middle of 2017,’ with pricing information being provided at a later date.

Check out Elinchrom’s product video below to see the kit in action.

Elinchrom extends Skyport radio transmitter compatibility to Panasonic Lumix cameras

24 Nov

Flash manufacturer Elinchrom has released new firmware for its EL-Skyport Transmitter Plus HS for Olympus so that the device will be able to work with Panasonic Lumix cameras as well as Olympus OM-D models. The transmitter, which is already compatible with all OM-D and Pen models, as well as the E-5 and E-410, will now work with Lumix models as far back as the G7, including the LX100 compact and the FZ1000 bridge camera.

Compatibility with the system means that the listed cameras can be used with a Skyport transmitter to trigger and control the output of a host of Elinchrom flash heads. Elinchrom products that can be used range from portable battery-powered heads to units designed for studio use. Photographers can use the Skyport transmitter to control four groups of heads via 40 channels, and a high speed sync mode allows shutter speeds as short as 1/8000sec. Elinchrom says that the system has an operating range of 200m, and that the 2.4GHz radio communication signals can pass through walls.

The Skyport transmitter costs $ 249/€249/£199. For more information visit the Elinchrom website.
