Canon wins lawsuit against eBay sellers accused of peddling counterfeit batteries

18 Jan

Canon USA has announced a successful lawsuit against two eBay sellers who were allegedly peddling counterfeit ‘Canon’ batteries. The camera company had filed a complaint against the defendants in October 2019, claiming the sellers were using its trademarks and that doing so could ‘mislead the public as to the source and authenticity’ of the products, potentially to their peril.

The legal victory took place on December 12, 2019, in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. According to Canon, the defendants in the case were barred from ‘infringing and counterfeiting the valuable Canon trademarks.’ The sellers will also be required to pay Canon a ‘significant amount of money,’ according to the camera company.

Below is a copy of the court documents, obtained by PetaPixel:

Counterfeit batteries put both the operator and their camera at risk, Canon explains on its website. These products may be poorly made and prone to overheating; they may also offer lackluster performance when compared to the real thing, resulting in frequent recharging and shorter lifetimes. Signs of a counterfeit battery include lack of an anti-hologram sticker on the bottom, modifications to the company’s logo and an inability to communicate with the camera.

Rare, original Marilyn Monroe contact sheet by Bert Stern appears on eBay for $195K

23 Jan

A new eBay listing is offering a 76 x 99.7cm / 30 x 39.25in contact sheet created by commercial photographer Bert Stern that features a dozen images of Norma Jeane Mortenson, more widely known as Marilyn Monroe. The mounted photo worksheet, which is described as being in excellent condition, was acquired by the New York-based seller rarepics914 from ‘an artist friend.’

The rare contact sheet features images captured during Stern’s ‘The Last Sitting’ portrait series, which was notably Monroe’s last photo shoot before she passed away due to a barbiturate overdose. Though the contact sheet shows some marks and minor wear from handling, it was kept safe for more than four decades in a storage facility, according to the seller, where it was protected from fading and damage.

The contact sheet is currently listed for sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $ 195,000 USD. Interested potential buyers can also make an offer and request to arrange a private viewing with the seller. Seller rarepics914 has a 100% rating with 633 confirmed reviews.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F4 D II ED lens with rare grey color appears on eBay

20 Dec

A new eBay listing details a rare grey Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm F4 D II ED lens in ‘very good’ condition with included case and accessories. According to the auction listing, the lens is fully functional with only ‘minimal to moderate’ signs of use on the barrel. ‘The glass is clean,’ according to the seller midwestphotoexchange, an authorized Nikon seller with a 99.8% positive rating with more than a thousand transactions. ‘The aperture blades are oil and corrosion free, and their action and control are snappy.’

The lens features the Nikon F mount and is compatible with all of the company’s SLR and DSLR models, though the seller warns it won’t meter on camera bodies made before 1977. The telephoto lens was manufactured in Japan at an unknown date and notably features a grey body overlaid with a prominent, bright red Nikon logo.

The lens is offered with a CT-502 hard case, HK-28 lens hood, both the front cover and rear cap, lens and case straps, and an extra drop-in filter holder. The seller, who will ship the item from Columbus, Ohio, is offering the lens bundle on eBay with the Buy it Now price of $ 3,995 USD, though the listing also allows interested buyers to make an offer on the item.

1959 Canon 45-200mm F2.8 (C35) ‘rarest’ prototype lens appears in eBay auction

22 Nov

An eBay listing is offering what the seller calls the ‘rarest prototype lens on Earth,’ a Canon 45-200mm F2.8 (C35) prototype lens. According to the listing, the lens was produced in Japan in 1959 and only “four or five” units were given to professionals for testing. Canon ultimately decided not to launch the lens commercially, possibly due to its heavy weight (approx. 3kg / 6.6lbs) and expensive price.

The seller goes on to claim that there are only two or ‘maybe three’ people in possession of these lenses globally. This particular unit, which is offered via auction with a starting price of $ 29,999 USD, is described as being in ‘Excellent+++’ condition for its age.

‘The lens was recently serviced, optics are cleaned,’ the campaign reads, ‘and [the] rear optic has minor sign on the coating in the corner, as it was properly cleaned from fungus and is missing [a] little coating.’ The product is said to be mechanically ‘perfect.’

The campaign references a 1959 Canon press release for the lens, but doesn’t provide a copy of it. Canon’s Lens Museum website doesn’t include any listing for this prototype, leaving only the seller’s claims. The seller has a 100% rating on more than 380 sales, but that doesn’t necessarily mean this listing is accurate.

The seller told DPReview the lens was acquired from ‘a very old studio’ that was torn down and sold off ‘a lot of stuff in auction.’ According to the seller, ‘some old movies were shot with the lens.’ DPReview is waiting to hear back with confirmation of what movies they were.

The auction includes the original metal lens storage box, front cap, filter, hood, focus knob and lens sliding attachment.

This may be Amelia Earhart’s Leica, and you can buy it for $69,000 on eBay

16 Mar

A working-condition Leica camera that may have belonged to Amelia Earhart—the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic and an iconic historical figure—has popped up for auction on eBay.

The Leica l Model A, dating from between 1926 and 1927, is set at a ‘Buy it Now’ price of £50,000/$ 69,490, and comes with a card signed by Earhart herself; unfortunately, this is the only proof we have that the camera really did belong to her. The seller acknowledges that the connection is a little tenuous, but claims the camera was given to his grandfather by Earhart in 1933 when she decided that she preferred a more user-friendly Kodak folder.

Earhart became famous for her pioneering flying and the records that she broke during her career, receiving the US Distinguished Flying Cross for her solo Atlantic flight. In 1937, she went missing during an attempt to fly around the world, and is presumed to have crashed somewhere in the Pacific Ocean (although the uncertainty surrounding her death has led to numerous theories that she didn’t crash at all).

The camera, which is said to be in good condition, has a non-interchangeable Leitz Elmar 50mm F3.5 lens and comes with the tall vertical rangefinder paired with the camera at the time, but which was available before the camera was made. The seller is also including a pair of metal film cassettes, and a ‘rare’ Leica purse to hold the lens cap.

The seller’s family collected cameras, and a part of that collection went to auction last year in Glasgow, Scotland, but this model failed to reach its reserve of £15,000/$ 21,000 and remained unsold. The seller believed the auction house gathered the wrong audience for the camera, which is why it is now on sale for a somewhat higher price.

At the time of writing, the eBay item has 26 days to run, and if you feel the ‘Buy It Now’ price is a fraction high for a camera with questionable provenance, you can still make an offer. Examples owned by less famous people can be had on the same site for as little as $ 1,500… or a bit more from a reputable dealer.

Seller’s Description

Im selling Amelia Earharts camera which was gifted by her to a family memeber in 1933 after returning back from a trip to Chicago with her Husband.

The camera has been in my family possession since that time and has been in long term storage, the camera appears to be working correctly.

The hand signed card was personally signed by Amelia and given to my Grandfather along with the camera by Amelia Earhart back in 1933 in Rye New York

Everything is authentic, I’ve known this camera all my life the signed card is almost like new as it has been stored carefully will post world wide. I would like the camera to go to a museum if possible.

Please note I have absolutely nothing to prove that this was in fact Miss Earharts Camera and research would need to be done to confirm such, I have absolutely no idea how to do that myself. From memory, over 40 years ago my Father told me that she found it fidly to load, Miss Earhart may have studied Photography, my Grandfather had said as much and described her as a keen photographer, she preferred a Kodak folding camera as I recall being told, she was also described as very nice and down to earth.

Amelia’s camera was at Mctears Auction house in Glasgow in March 2017, it was part of a rather large collection of cameras that I sold through Mctears. Unfortunately, the auction house could not find enough interest in the UK for Amelia’s camera, and as such the camera remained unsold. I can say this as I want to be totally transparent. Auction estimate was 10- £15,000. The last picture is from Mctears Auction house, I was there on the day that picture was taken, Mctears had used a trade gazette to advertise the collection and as such I considered some items were sold at less than their true value and then re-sold on by dealers at a profit later.

I do understand that Provenance is an issue, If I had that the camera would be worth Millions, not thousands. I had Bonhams Auctions out in 2016 who said as much when they inspected the camera.

Ultra-rare Konica Rokuoh-Sha Type 89 ‘Machine Gun’ camera pops up on eBay

24 Jan
Photos: eBay

For you collectors out there, a very rare piece of photographic equipment just popped up on eBay. Officially dubbed the Rokuoh-Sha Type 89 “Machine Gun” Military Training Camera, this camera was made by Konishoruko (which later became Konica) for training Japanese airplane gunners during World War II.

According to International Military Antiques and Photo Gear-Heads, these cameras would be mounted in airplanes instead of the real thing as a way to train new gunners. When the trigger is pressed, the camera would begin snapping 18x24mm pictures on 35mm cine film loaded in 2.5m strips. The photos captured whatever the “gun” was aimed at, while an optical stopwatch (placed in the yellow tube up top) was recorded onto the photos using a prism. These images would be examined later to help improve the gunner’s accuracy.

The piece is highly prized by collectors, and there’s a nearly identical model in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, which would make this a Model 2 with (possibly) the same 75mm Hexar lens.

Photos: eBay

The version on eBay looks a bit more beat up than the Smithsonian’s camera, but still in great shape. The seller, Westborn Camera Co, claims the camera “is in overall excellent condition, especially considering it was used during war-time,” and still works as far as they can tell. In the listing, Westborn writes:

This has been tested to my best ability, and everything seems to check out good: The winder holds firm tension and releases when fired. The shutter can be heard -AND- film transport responds properly.

The camera is going for a Buy It Now price of $ 4,500, which seems a tiny bit high based on the limited research we’ve done. Then again, the price varies a great deal. Closed eBay listings from the past few years went for anywhere between $ 795 and $ 4,100, and a similar model auctioned in 2014 went for 1,600 Euro (~$ 2,100 USD by the average 2014 exchange rate).

To find out more about this crazy camera, or if you wanna go ahead and pick up a very rare piece of military and photographic memorabilia, head on over to the eBay auction. And if you have more information about this very interesting bit of kit, drop us a line in the comments.

40 kg ‘Fake Leica’ steel sculpture by Liao Yibai appears on eBay for $100,000

10 Jan

A smaller version of the stainless steel “Fake Leica” sculpture made by Chinese artist Liao Yibai (and found in the Leica Store LA) has appeared on eBay with a buy it now price of $ 99,995 USD. The auction was posted by Leica Store Lisse in the Netherlands, which is also accepting offers from potential buyers via the online auction.

Though this is a smaller version of the original, the “Fake Leica” in the auction is quite hefty at 40kg / 88lbs, resulting i $ 350 in shipping cost—then again, if you’re already spending almost $ 100K on the thing, what’s an extra $ 350 for shipping?

The sculpture measures about 44,8 x 76,2 x 48,9cm / 17 x 30 x 19.25in and is very rare, having the serial number 8/12. This sculpture, as with the original, is highly detailed.

This doesn’t appear to be the first time Leica Store Lisse has listed this particular auction. Leica Rumors reported back in early 2016 that the Netherlands store was selling a small “Fake Leica” sculpture with the serial number 8/12. In its most recent auction, the store notes that a different “Fake Leica” sculpture sold in November 2013 through Westlicht Auction for 96,000 Euro (~$ 115K USD by today’s exchange rate).

Intense underwater 8×10 camera pops up on eBay for $5,800

22 Jul
This custom underwater 8×10 large format film camera was made for underwater fine art photography, and it can be yours for $ 5,800. Photo: eBay Auction

When you think underwater photography, a few cameras probably come to mind. Maybe you think of a simple GoPro action cam, maybe a ‘rugged compact’ like the Olympus TG-5, or maybe you dream of putting your DSLR inside a serious underwater housing. Whatever you think, we can almost guarantee you’ve never seen anything like this underwater camera.

This custom-built large format 8×10 underwater camera was built to capture fine art photography underwater, and it just popped up on eBay for the not-all-that-unreasonable price of $ 5,800.

The camera was posted to eBay by swfloridagirl941 before it was spotted by The Phoblographer. Made from aircraft grade aluminum and featuring 2 strobe connection ports, you need 60lbs of dive weights to even use this thing underwater. The monstrous creation “was built around a Schneider Super-Symmar 150mm f5.6 XL Aspheric MC lens with Copal No. 1 shutter and custom No. 2 close-up lens by Century Optics” and the seller is calling it “the first successful underwater 8×10 ever made.”

Schneider Super-Symmar 150mm F5.6 XL Aspheric MC lens.

This camera is the real deal, but don’t expect “auto” mode performance if you do buy it. You have to surface and change the film between each shot like any other 8×10 field camera, and understanding the optimal focusing distance and optics of this crazy system is crucial if you don’t want to waste some very expensive film.

When it does work, though, swfloridagirl941 promises spectacular results: “I have printed a poster size print of a girl underwater at five feet and with a magnifier one can see individual hair on her arm that are tack sharp.”

Here’s a behind the scenes and sample photo from the eBay auction:

To learn more about this fascinating 8×10 camera, head over to the eBay auction by clicking here. Just be ready to plunk down $ 5,800 plus about $ 300 shipping if you’re genuinely interested.
