Kamerar ZOOM is a lens attachment for the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera

26 Dec

With the 28 and 56mm equivalent lenses of its dual-camera, the iPhone 7 Plus offers more flexibility in terms of focal length than most smartphones. If that’s still not enough, the Kamerar ZOOM is now the first lens attachment designed for the iPhone’s dual-camera.

The system includes two lens attachments that slide into a special case and over the iPhone’s built-in camera lenses. One combines a fisheye lens for the iPhone’s wide-angle camera with a tele-converter for the 56mm lens. The other improves the macro capabilities of both lenses.

In the product images the tiny lenses and the attachment don’t have the same premium look as some of the high-end smartphone lenses, for example from Moment or Zeiss. However, at only $ 45 plus import duties the Kamerar Zoom could be an inexpensive way of widening the creative potential of the iPhone 7 Plus even further. It can now be ordered on the Kamerar website.

Qualcomm launches Clear Sight dual-camera system for smartphones

18 Sep

Chipset-maker Qualcomm has today announced its new Clear Sight dual-camera system. Clear Sight is not designed for optical zooming, like the dual-cameras in the LG G5 or iPhone 7 Plus, but instead adopts a similar concept as the Leica-branded dual-camera setup in the Huawei P9.

Both lenses have the same focal length but one captures image data on a color sensor, the other on a monochrome imager. The sensors are technically identical but the monochrome variant does not use a color filter. This means it cannot record any color information but in turn can capture three times as much light as the color sensor. As a result the black and white images have better contrast, lower noise levels and increased sharpness. By merging the image information from both sensors, color is added to the final output image.

This task is handled by Qualcomm’s Spectra ISP which is featured in the company’s Snapdragon 820 and 821 mobile chipsets. Clear Sight consists of a hardware module with two cameras, plus the corresponding computational algorithms that enable the Spectra ISPs to capture both images at exactly the same time and merge them. Qualcomm has not yet provided any detailed specifications, nor do we know what upcoming devices will feature Clear Sight. It certainly looks like dual-cameras are here to stay, though.

Primax Electronics to manufacture dual-camera in iPhone 7, reports say

24 Aug

According to a report on the Chinese-language publication Economic Daily News that has been quoted by Digitimes, Taiwanese company Primax Electronics will be the manufacturer of at least some of the dual-camera modules in the upcoming iPhone 7.

Primax recently increased its production capacity for camera modules by 10 percent and can now supply approximately 12 million units per month. Apparently about 70 percent of the manufactured modules come with a 13MP resolution which could be an indication for where the iPhone is going in terms of camera resolution. That said, Apple is not Primax’s only customer.

After an abundance of camera-related iPhone 7 rumors over the past few months it now seems pretty well established that the smaller 4.7″ model will feature a conventional camera with optical image stabilization and the larger ‘Plus’ model will come with a dual-camera setup. There is no information yet on how the latter will be used but the dual cam could offer optical zoom, as on the LG G5, improve image detail and reduce noise, like on the Huawei P9, or simulate a narrow depth-of-field, like on the HTC One M8 and a number of other dual-camera phones.

Huawei launches Honor V8 with 12MP dual-camera module

11 May

Huawei has announced the V8, the new flagship in the Chinese manufacturer’s Honor series of devices. Consumers can choose from different display and processor options but the camera module is the same on all variants. The Honor V8 features a dual-camera setup that looks very similar in terms of specifications to the one found on the Huawei P9, but has to make do without the P9’s Leica branding.

Both 12MP sensors come with a 1.76-micron pixel-size and are coupled with a 6-element lens with F2.2 aperture. There is also a dual-LED flash and the AF-system is laser-assisted. As on the P9, the front camera offers an 8MP sensor and F2.4 aperture.

In terms of display resolution customers get to choose from Full-HD or Quad-HD but all displays measure 5.7-inches and come with 2.5HD curved glass. The Android 6.0 operating system with Huawei EMUI 4.1 skin is powered by an octa-Core Kirin 950 or 955 chipset. RAM is 4GB on all models but the model with the higher-resolution screen comes with 64GB of storage while the Full-HD variant has to make do with 32GB.

Energy on all models is provided by a 3,500mAh battery that is charged via a USB Type-C connector. In China the Full-HD base model will retail for approximately $ 350 while to the top-end version with QHD-screen and 64GB storage will set you back approximately $ 439.

Apple patent describes dual-camera design

Looking at a new Apple patent that has recently surfaced, it appears we might see a dual-camera setup in future iPhone generations. The design uses two camera modules, one with a wide-angle lens and another with a longer focal length. Throw some Apple software wizardry into the mix and you get yourself a smartphone zoom lens that should get close in quality to fully optical zooms and much better than existing digital zooms.
