Meizu Pro 7 Plus comes with dual-cam and dual-screens

Chinese manufacturer Meizu has released its latest flagship smartphone and the Pro 7 Plus is quite a remarkable device in a number of ways. Like most recent high-end devices it comes with a dual-camera on the back. However it also offers a secondary AMOLED display on the back as a standout-feature. It can be used for music playback, date and weather-related information, or as viewfinder when taking selfies with the rear cameras.

In addition the Pro 7 Plus is also the first device to be powered by MediaTek’s new Helio X30 10nm chipset with 10 cores in three clusters. There are also 6GB of RAM, 64GB and 128GB storage options a 3500mAh battery and a 16MP front camera. Images can be viewed on a large 5.7″ QHD AMOLED display.

In the dual-camera the Meizu uses a very similar configuration to the Motorola Moto Z2 Force Edition that was announced two days ago. Two 12MP 1/2.9″ Sony IMX368 sensors with 1.25 µm pixel size, one RGB and one monochrome, are combined for depth-effects and improved image quality. The lenses come with F2.0 apertures and phase detection AF is on board as well.

If you think the Pro 7 Plus might be too large for your liking, there is also the standard Pro 7 with a smaller 5.2″Full HD panel and less powerful MediaTek Helio P25 chipset. The camera setup is the same as on the Pro model though. No information on pricing and availability has been provided yet.

Motorola Moto Z2 Force Edition comes with dual-cam and depth mode

Motorola has unveiled its 2017 flagship smartphone, the Moto Z2. Unsurprisingly the design is quite similar to the original Moto Z and comes with electronic contacts on the back, allowing for the attachment of Motorola’s Moto Mod accessory modules, such as the Hasselblad TrueZoom camera module.

At 6.1mm the device is very thin and comes with a full-metal shell that features a water-repellent nano-coating. In addition, the 2560×1440 Super AMOLED display is shatterproof, making the Z2 more rugged than most of its competitors in the premium segment of the market.

Android 7.1.1 is powered by Qualcomm’s current top-end chipset Snapdragon 835 but at 2730mAh is smaller than on many other high-end phones, which is probably owed to the thinness of the device.

The Moto Z2 is Motorola’s first smartphone to feature a dual-camera setup. Similar to the concept used in Huawei’s recent top-end phones the Moto combines a Sony IMX 1/2.9″ RGB sensor with a monochrome imager and uses image-fusion technology to optimize detail, noise levels, dynamic range and other aspects of image quality.

A depth-mode for simulating a shallow depth-of-field is on board as well and, compared to previous high-end Moto models, Motorola has significantly improved the panorama mode which can now produce much larger image output and fewer ghosting artifacts on moving subjects.

In video mode the Moto Z2 camera is capable of recording 4K footage and 720p slow-motion video at 240 fps or 1080p clips at 120 fps. The front camera offers a 5MP resolution and comes with a wide-selfie mode. A Pro mode provides manual control over shutter speed and other camera parameters and the DNG Raw format is supported with third-party camera apps.

With the dual-cam, improved panorama and slow-motion modes and new features, the Moto Z2 looks like a very promising update to the original Z2, especially in the camera department. You will be able to pre-order the Moto Z2 Force Edition from tomorrow. The device will be available from August 10 launch at a base price of $ 720.

OPPO R11 Plus comes with 2x tele dual-cam

Back at the Mobile World Congress in February Chinese Manufacturer OPPO was demonstrating a smartphone camera module with a 5x optical zoom that was developed in cooperation with the Israeli company CorePhotonics. This technology still has not made it into a production device but today the company has launched the R11 Plus which features a dual-cam with 2x zoom factor and all around impressive camera specifications.

The main lens is coupled with a 16MP Sony IMX398 1/2.8″ sensor and a fast f/1.7 aperture. The telephoto module features a 20MP Sony IMX350 sensor with f/2.6 aperture. The Qualcomm image signal processor applies image fusion algorithms and offers a background-blurring portrait mode, similar to what we’ve seen on the iPhone 7 Plus or the Xiaomi Mi6. 4K video recording is possible with both cameras. The front camera has a 20MP sensor and F2.0 aperture.

Other specifications include a 6″ 1080p AMOLED display, 6GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset and a 4,000mAh battery, all wrapped up in a metal unibody. No information on launch data and pricing has been revealed yet.

Honor 8 Pro combines big screen with dual-cam and large battery

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has today released its latest flagship – the Honor 8 Pro, which plays on a very similar level as the main brand’s Mate 9 and P10 high-end models. The 8 Pro features the same Kirin 960 chipset as the Huawei handsets and combines it with a generous 6GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage that can be expanded via a microSD-slot. Despite a large 4,000 mAh battery the device is very slim and the front is covered by a 5.7″ Quad-HD display. 

With a dual 12MP-camera setup the camera specification is on paper identical to the standard Honor 8 but the new Kirin chipset’s more powerful Image Signal Processor should slightly improve image quality compared to its slightly older cousin. As on all Huawei dual-cam a monochrome and a RGB sensor are combined to optimize image detail, noise levels and dynamic range as well as produce a simulated shallow depth-of-field effect. Both lenses come with F2.2 apertures and the camera is capable of recording 4K video. There is no optical image stabilization, though. The front camera uses an 8MP module with F2.0 aperture. 

The Honor 8 Pro has, at least at this point, been officially announced for European markets only and will cost you £475/590 in the UK which makes it an interesting alternative for those who want high-end looks and specs at an affordable price point. It will go up for pre-order today on the Honor vMall store and will be available in regular stores from April 20.

OPPO announces dual-cam 5x optical zoom technology for smartphones

OPPO is not showing any new smartphone models at the Mobile World Congress but, as teased last week, the Chinese company has announced 5x Dual Camera Zoom system for smartphones. The system uses a periscope-style design and fits into a module that is only 5.7mm tall. Light is diverted through a prism and into the dual-camera’s telephoto lens which is arranged at  a 90-degree angle to the accompanying wide-angle. By shifting the path of the entering light Oppo is able to achieve a 3x optical zoom which is combined with a proprietary image fusion technology for digital zoom. The end results is a total 5x lossless zoom factor. 

At longer focal lengths camera shake becomes more of a limiting factor which is why OPPO has also integrated optical image stabilization into the system. Both the prism and tele lens can sense vibrations and compensate for them in real time. The mechanism dynamically adjusts its angle at increments of 0.0025 degree and OPPO promises 40 percent better performance than previous OIS generations for stable shots even at the 5x zoom setting. 

OPPO has not provided any information on sensor sizes and apertures, which would be critical to the image quality of the system, but nonetheless the technology looks like a very innovative approach to zooming on smartphones and we are looking forward to seeing it implemented in a device.

LG G6 comes with dual-cam and 18:9 FullVision display

LG has today announced its latest flagship smartphone, the LG G6 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. For the new model LG has abandoned the G5’s modular concept and focused on usability and durability instead. The G6 comes with an elegant looking metal frame with chamfered edges and a brushed metal back plate. The body is now also water and dust proof. On the front you’ll find a 5.7″ QHD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio that LG calls FullVision.

The unusual format allows for a device design that offers a large display but can still easily be held in one hand. It also makes the phone ideal for split-screen applications and movie-watching in cinematic formats. In the new camera UI it allows you to see a previously captured image in square format while already framing the next one. LG says that many apps are currently being optimized for the new format and streaming video providers are offering more and more content in 18:9 aspect ratio. The G6 is also the first mobile device to support Dolby Labs’ Dolby Vision high dynamic range video technology.  The display is framed by very thin bezels and LG says it is easier to view in bright sunlight than previous versions.

Due to the waterproofing the battery is now non-removable but comes with an increased 3300 mAh capacity. Unlike some of its competitors the G6 still offers a 3.5mm headphone jack as well. Android 7.0 is powered by last year’s top-end chipset Snapdragon 821 and 4GB of RAM. 32 or 64GB of internal storage are expandable via a microSD slot.

In the camera department LG sticks with the G5’s dual-camera concept but both sensors now offer the same 13MP resolution. The wideangle lens comes with a 71 degree angle of view and F1.8 aperture while the super-wideangle offers 125 degrees and a slower F2.4 aperture. Only the wideangle is OIS-equipped. In the camera app you can switch lenses at the press of a button and LG says it has improved the transition when zooming between the two. 4K video capture with stereo sound recording and a laser-assisted AF system are on board as well. The front camera comes with a 5MP resolution.

With improved camera specs, the interesting new display format and the attractive and waterproof body, the LG G6 looks like an appealing option for mobile photographers in 2017. We are hoping to get our hands on a review unit soon. No information on pricing and availability has been released yet.

Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom features dual-cam with 2.3x zoom

Last year’s Asus Zenfone Zoom was one of very few smartphones to feature a conventional style 3x zoom lens. The downside to that was a slightly thicker than usual device and at F4.8 a very slow aperture at the tele end, for smartphone standards. 

On the new Zenfone 3 Zoom, just announced at CES in Las Vegas, Asus has changed strategies and opted for an iPhone 7 Plus style dual-cam. The Zenfone 3 Zoom offers the usual ‘bokeh-effect,’ and similar to the Apple device comes with a ‘tele’ lens that offers a 59mm equivalent focal length next to a 25mm wide angle. Both modules come with a 12MP image resolution. On the wide angle image data is captured on a 1/2.55″ Sony IMX362 sensor with 1.4 µm pixel size, F1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization. The longer lens has an F2.8 aperture but sensor specifications have not been revealed yet. It’s fair to assume the chip will be smaller than the one in the wide angle module, though. 

The camera also comes with phase detection and laser assistance in the AF system, a dual-LED flash and 4K video recording. Other specifications include a 5.5″ inch 1080p display with Gorilla Glass 5, a Snapdragon 625 chipset and a huge 5,000 mAh battery. At 7.83mm the Zenfone 3 Zoom is considerably thinner than its predecessor and could be the first real Android alternative to the iPhone 7 Plus. It will become available in February at which point Asus will hopefully also reveal complete camera specifications.

Rendered images show upcoming LG G6 with dual-cam

It seems dual-camera technology is quickly establishing itself as standard on high-end smartphones. LG is expected to launch the G6 at or around the Mobile World Congress at the the end of February 2017 and today a series of rendered images confirms that, like its predecessor G5 and the V20, the new model will feature a dual-camera. However, the G6 will not come with the G5’s modular construction, which means users of the device will probably have to make do without the camera grip extension that was available for the G5.

Given the visual differences between the two camera lenses, it is fair to assume the G6 dual-cam will offer two different focal lengths, like the G5, rather than adopt an image merging approach to improve image quality like some Huawei devices. Display size remains at 5.3″ and there is also a fingerprint reader, headphone-jack and USB Type-C connector. 

The images also show a more modern and elegant unibody design, which hopefully will make the G6 more of a commercial success than its predecessor. We quite liked the performance of the LG G5 dual-camera in our full review, but overall the device only received lukewarm reviews and could not meet expectations in the marketplace. As usual, this kind of leaked information should be taken with a pinch of salt, but the source tends to be very reliable. We should find out more in about three months time.

Apple rumored to work on 5-inch iPhone with vertical dual-cam

According to the Japanese blog Mac Okatara, Apple might introduce a new smartphone model in 2017 with a 5″ display to slot in between the existing 4.7″ and 5.5″ variants. The report, which originates from a Taiwanese supplier, also says the new mid-size iPhone would use an iPhone 7 Plus-like dual-camera, albeit with a vertical lens alignment rather than a horizontal one.

This rumor is in line with multiple other reports which have stated that in 2017 Apple will launch three rather than two new iPhone models. Alongside updated versions of the current models with 4.7″ and 5.5″ LCD displays, a new premium model with OLED display technology is expected. This device could also feature Apple’s dual-camera technology. 

As always, this kind of rumor is best taken with a pinch of salt but we were quite impressed with the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera in our full review and would love to see the technology integrated into a smaller form factor. We should know more by September 2017.

Camera+ updated for dual-cam compatibility and Raw

Camera+, one of the most popular camera apps for Apple’s iPhone, has received a major overhaul and version 9 now supports some of the new features that were introduced with the latest iPhone 7 generation and iOS 10. With Camera+  9 you can now use the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera, and Camera+ will let you choose how the system behaves in low light. You can either force it to use the longer lens with its slower F2.8 aperture, or operate in the same way as Apple’s stock camera app and digitally zoom the wide-angle lens when light levels go below a certain threshold. 

Raw support is another new addition. If you are using Camera+ on an iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, or 7 Plus, you can now save your images in the DNG Raw format. Those files can then be converted to JPEG using the new RAW Lab suite of editing tools. 

Finally, some of the control elements, for example the control wheels, now provide haptic feedback. As far as we know, this makes Camera+ the only camera app to offer this feature. If this update sounds appealing, you can download the app now from the App Store for $ 2.99.
