Panasonic 4K Photo reaches to grab stills-from-video dream

12 Jun

Using a video feed to capture stills isn’t a new idea – Nikon’s first electronic camera, the QV-1000C, did it in the late 1980s – but the resolution of 4K makes it more useful. Panasonic has recognized this way of working and has introduced 4K Photo mode to its 4K cameras, to make things easier for the user. We took the feature for a test drive. Read more

Dream Rooms: 14 Unreal-Feeling Art Gallery Transformations

27 Jan

[ By Steph in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

surreal art flat side 1

You might have to pinch yourself to ensure that you’re still awake as you walk into surreal dreamscapes of billowing clouds, seemingly endless fields of stars and rooms that appear to bend and shift in physically impossible ways. These installations completely transform gallery spaces into strange new environments that feel disconnected from the waking world. See 15 more surreal art spaces.

Cloudscape Made of Soap Bubbles

surreal art cloudscape 1

Eight pumps around the room in a Japanese gallery continuously alter a surreal cloudscape entitled ‘Foam.’ The installation, by artist Kohei Nawa, is made up of a pliable combination of glycerin, detergent and water that holds its shape and isn’t affected by gravity. The mixture billows gently, making it seem as if visitors are really in the sky.

Spatial Confusion by Sarah Oppenheimer

Doorways bend, walls lift up their corners to provide glimpses into adjacent rooms and skewed apertures make it seem as if people walking in nearby spaces are upside-down. Sarah Oppenheimer’s work seems to distort physical spaces, changing the gallery itself to create confusion.

The Flat Side of the Knife by Samara Goldstein

Do you ever dream about spaces that make no physical sense, with platforms seeming to hover in midair and staircases leading to apparently endless new rooms? With ‘Flat Side of the Knife,’ artist Samara Golden manages to capture that feeling in physical form with a combination of objects made of reflective foam insulation and live video projection. The installation spanned the entire floor-to-ceiling space of MoMA PS1’s first-floor duplex gallery, the various levels representing ‘layers of consciousness.’

Crawling from the Wreckage by Simon Birch

Student visitors pose from inside an installation titled "Crawling from the Wreckage" as part of Simon Birch's solo art exhibition in Hong Kong

You’ll feel like you stepped inside a 1980s video game with Simon Birch’s ‘Crawling from the Wreckage,’ a highly convincing three-dimensional replication of a computer-generated model. The effect is achieved using glow-in-the-dark paint on gridded furniture within a gridded ‘cell.’

Dream Boats: 15 Insanely Luxurious Super-Yacht Designs

12 Jun

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

Fantasy Yachts Main

If you have a few hundred million in the bank (or just like to fantasize about it,) you’ll want to peruse this selection of superyachts decked out with retractible swimming pools, underwater karaoke suites, personal submarines and even supercars included as a ‘free gift.’ Or perhaps a massive yacht that doubles as a private artificial island complete with a water desalination system is more your speed.

ORSOS Island Yacht
Fantasy Yachts Orsos

If you’ve got $ 6.5 million to spare, you can have your very own floating artificial island that can be anchored anywhere in the world. The ORSOS is a superyacht with 1,000 square meters of living space, including room to sleep 12, an underwater karaoke suite, a jacuzzi, sun loungers, a dining room and an aquarium. While it has two small diesel engines for cruising short distances, it has to be towed for long journeys.

Superyacht that Comes with a Free Supercar
Fantasy Yachts Free Supercar

When you’re paying $ 25 million for a state-of-the-art superyacht powered by twin Rolls Royce engines, maybe it’s not so crazy to expect a free handcrafted supercar as a bonus. The Strand Craft 122 by Gray Design features an Art Deco interior, four double rooms, four large staterooms, a reception area and crew cabins and can go up to 50 knots, while the unnamed supercar achieves a top speed of 230 mph.

Submarine Yacht
Fantasy Yachts Undersea
Fantasy Yachts Undersea 2

The U-101 Undersea Yacht is a submarine for pleasure cruising, with two levels of sun decks and an enormous interior, not to mention both a single-person jet ski and a smaller submarine for underwater exploration.

Infinitas by Schöpfer Yachts
Fantasy Yachts Infinitas

With its carved-out stern, the Infinitas by luxury boat designer Schöpfer Yachts looks like a bird skull skimming along the surface of the sea. The design inspiration actually comes from the symbol for infinity, which can be seen in the two large ‘eye’ openings from above. The 300-foot yacht has a pool deck, on-board elevator, helipad and glass-floored ‘sky bridge.’

Adastra Trimaran Yacht
Fantasy Yachts Adastra
Fantasy Yachts Adastra 2

Designed for an experienced ocean voyaging billionaire couple and their family, the Adastra Yacht uses extraordinarily small amounts of fuel for a range of 4,000 miles. The three-hulled trimaran yacht reminiscent of a spaceship can be controlled remotely at the touch of an iPad and cost $ 15 million.

Dream With Patrick Brassard

27 Apr

Dream By Patrick Brassard 2014

Patrick Brassard caught my attention when he showed me the work from his Dream series created earlier this year. He is a fashion photographer based in New York City that endeavours to produce photographs unlike anything created by the photography predecessors before him. His use of light, shadow and rich, dark colors are used to transform the atmosphere of his sets of his mysterious settings and intriguing style that have become a testament to his technique. Patrick has also shot for for top modelling agencies and his passion for his photographic work has led him to Europe, South America, as well as the Caribbean Islands. I managed to catch up with Patrick to ask him more about his series, Dream and to get more a more in-depth insight into his photographic style.

Dream By Patrick Brassard 2014

When asked how did his passion for photography came about, Patrick explained that he gathered his skills early on in his journey, that  seeking opportunities and finding a unique style became a necessity for academic survival during his time in photography school, “During my summer break from photography school in Boston I realized two crucial steps would put me ahead of my classmates for the returning year. First, I’d push myself to seek out every possible photography opportunity. Second, and most importantly, I needed to develop my personal style.

During the summer of that year I reached out to shoot fashion events and was fascinated by the production that went into creating a look. In the city of Boston, where the fashion scene is relatively small, it was easy to meet and develop relationships with the designers, make-up artists, hairstylists, and models. Before I knew it they started asking me to shoot their look books and portfolios. By the end of that summer as a 20-year-old student, I had been published, found my personal style, and created a network of clients.”

Dream By Patrick Brassard 2014

I asked Patrick about his recent series, entitled dream and how this photographic story with its haunting, surreal and dream-like compositions came about, he replied that the inspiration was a combined effort by his team as well as the locations he shot in “The series Dream developed over the course of the shoot as the designer, Long Tran and I worked together. His vision and unique talent combined to produce a remarkable outcome to the shoot. His style, similar to Lady Gaga’s, inspired me to shoot without restrictions. The designs added a crucial element to the series.

I was also fortunate to work with a team consisting of many talented people. Two make-up artists,  Goran Sliskovic and Madison Mills both developed striking contours on the models’ faces to bring out the severity of the looks. Hairstylist Egypt Buck He designed wigs with long extensions that transformed the models with over the top hairstyles. Our two models were from Fenton Moon Modeling Agency NYC. I was assisted by photo assistant Nixxie Blanck. I shot the models in an outdoor location in NJ, both in the woods and on a rooftop. The locations always provide more inspiration for props and subject background.”

Dream By Patrick Brassard 2014

Fascinated by how Patrick was able to achieve the moody effects he does so well in his photos, which he describes as “The way I approach shooting is dark and mysterious. I like to play a lot with the shadows and highlights to contour my subjects.” I had to ask what photography equipment he used to achieve this, he informed me that “I shot this series with a Nikon D300. My lighting was with one strobe and a soft box. I carry a portable battery for the strobe.  My assistant was holding a light reflector to give me some fill light. Some images from this series were taken when the sun had set.”

Since my interview with Patrick, he had also been involved with another project, collaborating with world renowned photographer, Robert Farber and he would like to invite you all to visit, entitled “The Fabarge Egg Hunt in NYC.”
