Apple upgrades its 27″ iMac with 10-gen Intel CPUs, new AMD GPUs and doubles RAM capacity

Apple announced at its all-virtual WWDC event this year that we would see another round of Intel-based computers before we start to see computers powered by its in-house chipsets. And now it’s here. Apple has announced an update for its 27” iMac, which may very well be the last Intel-based iMac for the foreseeable future. The update adds improved base-level storage options, more powerful CPU/GPU options, upgraded RAM capacity and improvements to the 5K Retina display.

The updated iMac shares the same external design as previous iMacs, with only one exception. In addition to the glossy glass screen that’s been standard on iMacs for the past decade, you can now choose a nano-texture matte glass option, a technology Apple first showed off in its Pro Display XDR. As its name suggests, this option reduces glare on the screen and should result in a better image in brighter environments. In addition to the matte glass, the display now features Apple’s True Tone technology for adapting the color balance based on the ambient lighting.

Moving inside the computer, Apple is now using 6-core and 8-core 10th-gen Intel CPUs across the entire lineup, with the option to upgrade to a 10-core option — the first time a 10-core CPU has been available inside an iMac. Apple has also increased the amount of memory the new iMacs can support. If you don’t mind paying the price, you can now max out your iMac with up to 128GB of RAM.

Apple has also updated the graphics capabilities of its new 27” iMac with AMD’s Radeon Pro 5000 series GPU. The base model starts with 6GB of GDDR6 of memory and has upgrade options going up to 16GB of GPU memory.

SSDs are now standard across the board, with the base model starting at 256GB of flash storage and the option to max out with an 8TB SSD. Apple has also added its higher-bandwidth T2 security chip, bringing it in line with the rest of Apple’s computer lineup.

Other improvements include an updated 1080p FaceTime camera, an improved ‘studio quality’ microphone system and better speakers. Apple is also making SSD storage standard across its 21.5” iMac lineup and the iMac Pro will come standard with the 10-core Intel Xeon processor that’s offered as an upgrade option in the new 27” iMac.

The base 27” iMac starts at $ 1,800 for a 3.1GHz 6-core 10th-gen Intel i5 processor, 8GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD storage and a Radeon Pro 5300 GPU with 6GB of memory. The nano-texture glass is available for an additional $ 500 and further CPU, GPU, RAM and storage upgrades can be made at various price increases.

Craft brewery partners with Kodak to create a beer that doubles as film developer

Delaware craft brewery Dogfish Head has teamed up with Kodak to create SuperEIGHT, an analog-inspired Super Gose beer designed specifically to develop film.

Sam Calagione, founder and CEO of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, was recording an episode of The Kodakery, a podcast created by Kodak, when he learned that with the right levels of acidity and vitamin C, it would be possible to create a beer capable of developing film. Coincidentally enough, the research and development team at Dogfish was already working on a beer with properties that would align perfectly with those needed for developing film, and so SuperEIGHT was born.

After further developing the ‘super-refreshing, sessionable Super Gose,’ the Dogfish Head team sent a few batches over to Kodak for testing and sure enough, it worked. The resulting footage, seen in sample footage above, isn’t nearly as impressive as dedicated developers, but for a beer we’d say it’s pretty darn impressive. Kodak and Dogfish Head even shared a recipe for the development, which can be downloaded and printed off.

As for the beer itself, SuperEIGHT has an alcohol content of 5.3% and ‘is made with eight heroic ingredients including prickly pear, mango, boysenberry, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, kiwi juices and a touch of quinoa, along with an ample addition of Hawaiian sea salt.’

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery will start shipping six packs of 355ml (12 fl oz) cans in April 2019.

Aurora Aperture doubles up on its new PowerXND Mark II VND filters

Back in 2016, Aurora Aperture took its first foray into the photography filter world with the launch of its PowerXND 2000 variable neutral density (ND) filter. Now, it’s back at it again on Kickstarter with the launch of a pair of updated PowerXND Mark II filters.

Unlike its first filter, the PowerXND Mark II comes in two varieties: the PowerXND-II 128, which covers one to seven stops of light, and the PowerXND-II 2000, which covers from five to eleven stops of light.

By splitting the coverage into two filters, you now have the entire range from one stop of light reduction, all the way up to eleven stops, with a bit of overlap in-between.

At the request of users, Aurora Aperture has added more aggressive knurling to the rings, direct reading scales and hard stops to its PowerXND Mark II filters, both of which should help dial in the proper exposure every time. Despite the changes in design, the PowerXND Mark II filters still measure in at just 6mm deep.

The filters are constructed of Schott B270 glass and a polarization film from Nitto Denko, which are combined with a proprietary polishing process. Aurora Aperture also adds ‘multilayer nano coatings’ on the elements to protect the elements from debris and reduce color shifting. The frames are CNC-milled from ‘aerospace grade aluminum’ and anodized black for corrosion protection.

Filters can be purchased for the following filter thread sizes: 37mm, 39mm, 40.5mm, 43mm, 46mm, 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm, 86mm, 95mm, 105mm and 150mm.

The Kickstarter has already surpassed its $ 15,000 goal. Pledges start at $ 45, which will get you one small (37-46mm) 128 or 2000 filter and go up incrementally from there depending on the size and quantity of filters you need. Aurora Aperture expects the first filters to ship by September 2018.

This rare 14 karat gold ring doubles as a spy camera

If you love unusual cameras and happen to have $ 20,000 burning a hole in your pocket, you’ll definitely want to pop over to eBay and check out this fascinating gold ring/spy camera. That’s right. The ornate 14-karat solid gold ring you see above is actually a camera in disguise.

Spotted on eBay by The Phoblographer, the ring is believed to be one of only two in existence, and stands out for the fact that it’s made of solid gold. The other known model, which was sold by Christie’s auctions in 1991 to a jewelry collector for $ 25,000, was merely gold-plated.

According to the seller, the previous owner of this subminiature spy camera was a gentleman who goes by the name Mr. Shibata—a Japanese camera collector. As for who actually made the ring, no one seems to know. Its origins remain a mystery. Here’s a closer look at this extremely unusual ring:

The ring weighs approximately 44 grams and has a ‘585’ stamp on the inside, certifying it as a solid gold piece. The ornate hand-engraved details appear impressively sharp for its age and, aside from a few scuffs, it looks to be in good condition.

As for the camera tucked away inside, the seller notes that it still functions. It features a variable aperture, a guillotine shutter, clean optics, and uses 8mm film wrapped around a custom film holder as its medium. The ring includes the film holder and a matching 14-karat solid gold cover to help it blend in—although you’ll have to source your own film.

Considering the gold-plated version of this ring sold for roughly $ 5,000 more than this version is priced at, it could be considered a bargain. That said, the lack of history on who created it and where it came from might hurt its resale value if you were considering “flipping” it for a profit through an official auction house.

Rotolight unveils the Neo 2: A portable LED HSS flash that doubles as a modeling light

Rotolight has announced the launch of Neo 2, an “industry first” high speed sync-capable LED flash that doubles as a continuous light source and boasts no recycle time.

The company says it designed the Neo 2 specifically for videographers and portrait photographers, and that it collaborated with Elinchrom to build its Skyport 2.4GHz HSS wireless flash receiver into the model. That Skyport receiver, in conjunction with the Rotolight HSS transmitter, enables photographers to wirelessly control up to four groups of 10 lights at ranges up to 656ft / 200m.

The Neo 2 light itself is powered by AA batteries and is capable of 85,000 full-power flashes on a single charge. This model’s shutter sync can be set at fast as 1/8000th of a second, and it offers 500% flash output.

Compared to the original model, the Neo 2 is 85% brighter when used as a continuous light, and there’s a built-in kelvin display for adjusting both flash and continuous light color temperature. Rotolight used its AccuColour LED tech with the Neo 2, the result being “perfect color rendering,” according to the company.

The Neo 2 is available now in a £250 (~$ 325 USD) bundle that includes a single light, the power supply, an accessory shoe, belt pouch, and a 4-piece filter pack. Rotolight is also offering a £1,125.00 (~$ 1,465 USD) bundle that features three lights, stands, balls heads, and a hard flight case.

New York Times reportedly more than doubles photographers’ pay rate

The New York Times has more than doubled its photographers’ pay, according to a new report, increasing its day rate from $ 200 to $ 450. The report’s sources also claim that the publication’s pay rate for photographers working less than a day is now $ 300, though it isn’t clear what the previous rate was. This follows a report the company published in January stating, among other things, that it ‘need[s] to expand the number of visual experts who work at The Times and also expand the number who are in leadership roles.’

The Times discussed its ‘strategy and aspirations’ in its 2020 report published in January 2017. Chief among the details about many changes the publication needs to make is discussion of photography and its role in modern journalism. ‘Too much of our daily report remains dominated by long strings of text,’ the report explains, detailing ways it could improve articles using visual elements.

In addition to enabling reporters and others to improve their visual storytelling capabilities, The Times says, ‘We also need to become more comfortable with our photographers, videographers and graphics editors playing the primary role covering some stories, rather than a secondary role.’

Epson doubles print life with its SureColor P5000 17in printer

Epson claims its new 17″ printer uses ink that has double the print-life of previous models and which produces a smoother, more even gloss finish. The SureColor P5000 features a choice to two 10-cartridge inksets so photographers and artists can prioritize durability while the commercial proofing market can prioritize color gamut.

The new machine replaces the Stylus Pro 4900 and brings Epson’s latest technology to the 17″ sector. It uses the company’s PrecisionCore TFP print head and the newest UltraChrome pigment inks – HDX. These inks have blacks which are 1.5x denser than previous sets, and use orange and green inks to expand the range of colors that can be produced. Epson also says that the new print head has an ink-repellent coating that helps to prevent ink sticking to it and clogging the nozzles.

The P5000 will accept sheet and roll media at the same time, and can be front-loaded with art board up to 1.5mm thick. A built-in rotary cutter automatically slices roll-fed images and Epson says that the printer can produce prints of up to 100 feet in length.

The difference between the Standard Edition for photographers and the Commercial Edition for proof printers is that the Light Light Black ink that delivers the extended permanence in the Standard Edition is replaced by a violet ink that Epson claims delivers ‘an industry-best 99 percent PANTONE® PLUS FORMULA GUIDE solid-coated color matching’. Both formulations cost the same $ 1995.

Kickstarter-born leather goods company Temporary Forevers has launched a campaign to fund production of its new 48Hr Switch camera bag. Like the 48Hr Classic it introduced earlier this year, the Switch is a convertible backpack/briefcase/messenger bag with padded dividers suitable for camera gear storage. The handcrafted leather bag offers room for other items like a laptop, accessories, and clothing thanks to its expandable design. In addition to the 48Hr Switch, T.Forevers also plans to launch a non-expandable 24Hr Switch model.

The bag’s camera and lens dividers are detachable, enabling owners to rearrange or remove them as necessary for storing camera bodies and lenses. In addition to those dividers, the 48Hr Switch features a padded laptop pocket, dedicated document sleeve, pockets for a phone, pens and other small items, and a 3.9in / 10cm depth expandable to 6.5in / 16.5cm.
