Lensrentals’ most popular gear: Canon once again dominates with Sony, Nikon far behind

01 Jan

It’s the end of the year and that means Lensrentals has once again rounded up a list of the most popular camera bodies, lenses and accessories rented from Lensrentals and LensProToGo customers in 2020. Although this year has been, shall we say, different than most, the macro-level look at the most popular rental gear hasn’t changed much. That said, there are a few interesting trends emerging based on the 2020 data.

As it has been since 2017, the Canon 24–70mm F2.8L II lens takes the top spot of the most popular item to fly off Lensrentals’ shelves. Following it is the Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 70–200mm F2.8L IS II, Sony a7 III and Canon 70–200mm F2.8L IS III. It isn’t until sixth place that we see a change of places. Instead of the Ronin-S, Canon’s 35mm F1.4L II lens snatches up sixth place.

As has been the case for a number of years now, Canon absolutely dominates the list of most-rented gear. Canon holds 7 of the top 10 (70%) items and 13 of the top 20 (65%). Lensrentals also note Canon easily took the top spot for new releases in 2020, suggesting people seem more comfortable renting newer Canon gear compared to new offerings from other brands. To that end, Lensrentals’ data also shows that RF mount lenses rent at eight times the rate of Nikon Z mount lenses—a rather staggering statistic considering the new mirrorless mounts were released at the same time and have roughly the same number of lenses available for both mounts.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but there’s been significant growth in mirrorless camera and lens rentals. This backs up essentially all other data showing the migration away from DSLRs is undoubtedly happening. Another interesting trend is third-party lenses, such as those offered by Sigma and Tamron, are on the rise.

All in all, across the board, the top five rental brands are Canon, Sony, Nikon, Sigma and Blackmagic, respectively. The only change in the top five compared to 2019 is Blackmagic, which overtook Panasonic for the final spot.

Nikon dominates World Press Photo 2018 camera breakdown

17 Apr

Last week, the prestigious photojournalism contest World Press Photo announced its 2018 winning photos, and most of those winners included information about the gear used to capture their images. Taking advantage of this fact, Spanish photography website Photolari pulled that public data and created a series of graphs breaking down the equipment used by participating photojournalists.

Of the 129 winning images, 97 included gear details; though the graphs don’t represent the models were used by all participants, they do cover the majority. And the short version of the results goes something like this: Nikon dominated the brands, and the DSLR continues to dominate over mirrorless.

According to the breakdown, the Nikon D5, Nikon D810, and Canon EOS 5D Mark III tied for first place, with 11 winning photos each. Coming in second is the Nikon D800E and Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with seven units each. Finally, both the Nikon D4S and Nikon D700 tied for third place with six units each.

Nikon is the overall winner among gear use, representing a total of 51.5% versus Canon’s second place 29.9%. Other makers represented far smaller pieces of the pie, with Fujifilm taking 6.2%, Sony taking 5.1%, and both Pentax and DJI taking 2.1% each. Not represented in the percentage graph are three Leica models, two of them the M10 and the other a Leica SL.

Further revealing the type of gear used is another category: types of cameras. That breakdown reveals DSLRs comprised the majority of participants’ gear at 83.5%, with mirrorless taking second place at 11.3%, and other unspecified types representing a total of 5.2%.

This isn’t Photolari’s first breakdown of World Press Photo winner gear. Last year, the site found that Canon took the top three slots, with the 5D Mark III in first place, while the 5D Mark II and Mark IV models took second and third, respectively. Nikon wasn’t even represented until 7th place on last year’s breakdown. Photolari’s graphs also reveal an uptick in mirrorless popularity. In 2017, DSLRs claimed 88.8% of the “types” category, a figure that dropped to 83.5% in 2018. Mirrorless only claimed 5.55% in 2017, increasing to 11.3% this year.

That said, it’s important to note that Photolari’s 2017 graphs are based on only 36 out of 45 awarded photos. So while it’s nice to compare 2017 to 2018 and draw grand conclusions about the camera market, this is probably more an exercise in bragging rights than an accurate representation of camera company health.

2018 Japan BCN camera rankings: Canon dominates DSLRs, tops Sony in mirrorless

18 Jan

The 2018 Japan BCN camera rankings are in, and they show that (surprise, surprise) Canon is still veritably dominating the DSLR space with 61.1% marketshare, only a slight drop from its previous 63.3% share. More impressive is Canon’s performance in the mirrorless category where Canon took the number 2 position, hitting 21.3% versus Sony’s 20.2%. Olympus beat both to take top slot in mirrorless at 27.7%, though, a small increase over its previous 26.8% marketshare.

According to BCN, Canon also topped the “digital camera with integrated lens” category, holding 27.9% of marketshare over Nikon’s 25.5% and Casio’s 17.2%. The BCN rankings also look at action cameras, which saw GoPro take top slot with 67.2% marketshare (not that this has helped the company’s outlook lately…), as well as digital video cameras, which has Panasonic on top with a 42% marketshare.

When looking at previous figures, the rankings show Nikon growing in DSLR sales while Canon and Ricoh both saw decreases. Olympus, Canon, and Sony all experienced growth in the mirrorless category, while Canon and Nikon both experienced growth in the integrated lens digital camera market.

Notably, Canon continues to show strong growth in Japan’s mirrorless market despite Sony’s recovery from the disruption caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.

That earthquake had impacted Sony’s nearby image sensors facility, which supplied sensors for both Nikon and Olympus, among others. In its early 2017 fiscal quarterly results, Olympus had noted that the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake had a negative impact on its Imaging Business sales. Likewise, Nikon had revealed its own Imaging Products Business impact during the same time, resulting in downwardly revised forecasts.

However, despite Sony’s facility restoring operations in the many months since the earthquake, Canon is still outpacing Sony in the mirrorless segment.

Though Nikon saw DSLR marketshare growth in 2017, whereas Canon saw a slight decrease, the latter company still trounces its closest competitor at 61.1% versus Nikon’s 34.4%. Whether Canon’s biggest competitors will see any significant 2018 gains on the company in their respective categories is anyone’s guess.
