Moment Pro Camera for Android discontinued over platform difficulties

03 Mar

Moment has revealed it’s discontinued the Android version of its Pro Camera mobile app. The reason, according to a statement shared on Moment’s help website, is the difficulty involved in supporting a wide variety of Android devices from different manufacturers, otherwise referred to as fragmentation.

A number of issues compelled Moment to discontinue Pro Camera for Android, the company said in a statement. ‘The short is that phone makers like to create their own flavor of Android, each with different amounts of access to select camera features,’ Moment said. ‘The result has been a random compatibility list where each phone has different features in the app by phone model.’

Moment explains that it repeatedly asked phone manufacturers to make their camera features available to the developer and to share the list of the changes they made to the devices. On top of that, each new Android update released by these companies ‘breaks these custom modifications,’ making things more difficult for developers.

Ultimately, Moment says that it does not have ‘the engineering bandwidth’ to continue supporting this app, but that it will continue to make it available in the Google Play Store, where it is sold for $ 4. The app currently has a low rating of 2.4 out of 5 stars, with users complaining about bugs and missing features.

Nikon Japan officially lists the D5500 and D7200 as discontinued

20 Dec

The Nikon D5500 and D7200 DSLRs have officially been discontinued, according to the Nikon Japan website.

It’s been rumored for some time now, but as reported by Nikon Rumors, Nikon Japan has confirmed both APS-C cameras are discontinued on its website.

The D5500 and D7200 were launched in January and March 2015 and were superseded by the D5600 and D7500, respectively. Another fun bit of trivia is the D5500 was the first Nikon DSLR to feature a touchscreen when launched.

As Nikon’s APS-C lineup dwindles, it’ll be interesting to see how much Nikon invests into its crop sensor DSLRs going forward. Nikon Rumors also notes there hasn’t been much hearsay in the rumor mill regarding any potential APS-C mirrorless systems.

It’s also worth noting that while listed as discontinued by Nikon Japan, the D5500 is still available for purchase at Adorama and currently listed as back-ordered on B&H, while the D7200 is still in stock at both Adorama and B&H.

Nikon KeyMission action cameras listed as discontinued on maker’s websites

19 Jul

Nikon now lists its KeyMission action cameras as discontinued on its UK and Japan websites, a change first spotted by Nikon Rumors. The maker’s UK website lists the KeyMission 80 as “discontinued,” though neither the KeyMission 170 or 360 models show the same notice. The Nikon Japan website lists the KeyMission 360 as an “old product,” but doesn’t include the KeyMission 80 or 170 models under its discontinued action camera page.

The Nikon USA website does not currently list any of the KeyMission cameras as discontinued and is still selling all three models. The Nikon UK website is still selling the KeyMission 360 model, but lists the 170 as out of stock and the 80 as discontinued. Existing inventory is still available to purchase through online retailers like B&H Photo.

We have reached out to Nikon for an official statement.

Nikon Inc confirms the Nikon 1 system is officially discontinued

12 Jul

Almost a year after we first heard whispers of its demise, Nikon has quietly killed off its Nikon 1 series cameras, lenses and accessories.

First noted on Nikon Japan’s http://www.nikon-image.com/products/acil/discontinue_lineup/, Nikon Inc. has since confirmed in an email to DPReview that ‘The Nikon 1 series cameras, lenses and accessories are no longer in production.’

Nikon Inc. also confirmed via email that ‘The Nikon 1 J5 and other Nikon 1 products are [still] available at select retailers in some regions.’ As of publication of this article, Nikon still has the Nikon 1 J5, Nikon 1 V3 and Nikon 1 AW1 listed on its website and available for purchase. As for other retailers, B&H has all Nikon 1 J5 listings ‘currently unavailable’ and Adorama has both the Nikon 1 J5 and Nikon 1 V3 available for purchase, with the former being listed as a ‘closeout.’

The move to kill off the Nikon 1 line shouldn’t come as a surprise. The newest camera in the lineup was launched more than three years ago

The Nikon 1 series came to life on September 21, 2011, with the release of the Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 V1 cameras. Since then, there have been 11 different cameras and 12 different lenses released for the Nikon 1 system, as well as a collection of accessories including flashes, cases, GPS units and more.

The move to kill off the Nikon 1 line shouldn’t come as a surprise. In addition to the rumors flying around, the newest camera in the lineup was launched more than three years ago on April 2, 2015.

Add to that last year’s statement from Tetsuro Goto, Director of Laboratory Research and Development at Nikon Japan, who told Chinese website Xitek, ‘full frame is the trend […] if Nikon will go mirrorless it must be full frame,’ the writing has been on the wall for some time.

Cosina has discontinued the Zeiss SLR Classic series of lenses

15 Dec

Cosina Japan has officially discontinued the Zeiss SLR Classic lens series, specifically bringing an end to the: Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm F2.8, 18mm F3.5, 25mm F2, 28mm F2, and 35 F1.4, as well as the Zeiss APO?Sonnar T* 135mm F2.

The notice simply reads (translated):

“[Production End Guide] The ZEISS SLR classic series of products (2.8/15, 3.5/18, 2/25, 2/28, 1.4/35, 2/135) has finished production.”

The announcement comes a couple years after Cosina launched a new lens series called Milvus, which is designed for digital SLR cameras and more-or-less replaced the SLR Classic series. The Milvus series more than makes up for the lenses that are currently being discontinued, already boasting 11 lenses to its name, but there’s no doubt that some true gems will be relegated to eBay auctions from this point forward.

You can still find some Zeiss SLR Classic glass new at online retailers for now, but don’t expect that to last much longer.

Nikon 1 mirrorless system discontinued

01 Aug

You would have to be quite the optimist to have expected new models in Nikon’s 1 series of 1″ sensor mirrorless system cameras being launched any time soon. Despite camera manufacturers hardly ever announcing a product line’s end-of-life the 1-series phase-out is now pretty much official.

German camera website Digitalkamera.de produces buying guides in e-book format and the production process for those guides includes research into what models are still available to order by retailers and what is being discontinued. While updating their guide for mirrorless system cameras the guys at Digitalkamera.de found that the Nikon 1 AW and 1 V3 are both not available any more. The Nikon 1 J5 is still available but only while supplies last.

So, what has been obvious for quite some time is now confirmed: the Nikon 1 system has reached its end. The question is what’s next for Nikon in terms of mirrorless cameras? Thanks to an official Nikon statement we know that the company is working on a new mirrorless system. We’d expect the new cameras to come with a larger sensor than the Nikon 1 models but at this point Nikon has not made information on specifications or features available.

Fujifilm X100T in black listed as discontinued on B&H Photo

25 Apr

Is it the beginning of the end for the Fujifilm X100T? The camera has been listed as discontinued on B&H Photo’s website. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this camera show up on an online retailer’s website as discontinued; Digital Rev showed it out of stock back in September 2016, though it currently lists one version the camera as ‘in stock.’

The B&H Photo listing shows only the black version of the X100T as discontinued, while the silver version is still available. In contrast, Digital Rev shows the black version as currently available and the silver version as unavailable. Adorama still lists both the black and silver versions available for a discounted $ 1,099.99.

Samsung NX500 shown as discontinued

09 Mar

The Samsung NX500, which launched in the U.S. early last year, is shown as discontinued on B&H Photo, which may indicate that the camera is no longer being manufactured. However, it’s still available from Samsung’s website and Amazon. If the NX500 has indeed reached the end of its life, it would mark Samsung’s latest move away from the camera market following the company’s recent discontinuation of the NX1 model in Germany and the UK.

Late last year, rumors surfaced claiming Samsung had discontinued its NX1 mirrorless camera model in Europe. Soon after, Samsung representatives confirmed the model has been discontinued in the UK and Germany, citing a ‘gradual decline in demand for standalone digital cameras.’ Adorama now shows steep discounts for the NX1 model, marking the body-only unit down $ 450 to $ 1,049 and the NX1 with 16-50mm power zoom lens a full $ 500 cheaper at $ 1,199.

We’ve reached out to Samsung for confirmation and will update this story when we hear back.

Samsung NX1 discontinued in Europe? Rumors say ‘yes’ (Updated)

12 Nov

A story on video blog EOSHD claims that Samsung has discontinued its NX1 mirrorless camera across Europe. An email that one of the site’s forum users claims to be from Samsung states that ‘in Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras’. We’re quite skeptical about this rumor and have reached out to Samsung for comment, so stay tuned. Update: rumor is almost certainly false. Read more
