Nikon develops 1″-type square CMOS sensor that can capture HDR video at 1,000 fps

Nikon Japan has announced (machine-translated) it’s developed a 17.84-megapixel 1”-type multi-layer CMOS image sensor that can capture high dynamic range video at up to 1,000 frames per second.

Nikon is known to use Sony sensors in a number of its imaging products, but it also develops its own sensor technology. Case in point is this new 1”-type backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor, which offers high-speed capture with impressive dynamic range in a square capture format.

The stacked sensor uses 17.84 million 2.7?m pixels (4224×4224 pixels) to capture video at up to 1,000 frames per second with 110dB dynamic range. If dropped to 60fps, the dynamic range jumps to 134dB.

Nikon doesn’t specify what kind of products this sensor is destined for, but based on its square format and hint at its use in ‘industrial fields such as automobiles,’ it’s unlikely we’ll see this in a consumer camera anytime soon.

NVIDIA Research develops a neural network to replace traditional video compression

NVIDIA researchers have demonstrated a new type of video compression technology that replaces the traditional video codec with a neural network to drastically reduce video bandwidth. The technology is presented as a potential solution for streaming video in situations where Internet availability is limited, such as using a webcam to chat with clients while on a slow Internet connection.

The new technology is made possible using NVIDIA Maxine, a cloud-AI video streaming platform for developers. According to the researchers, using AI-based video compression can strip video bandwidth usage down to 1/10th of the bandwidth that would otherwise be used by the common H.264 video codec. For users, this could result in what NVIDIA calls a ‘smoother’ experience that uses up less mobile data.

In a video explaining the technology, researchers demonstrate their AI-based video compression alongside H.264 compression with both videos limited to the same low bandwidth. With the traditional video compression, the resulting low-bandwidth video is very pixelated and blocky, but the AI-compressed video is smooth and relatively clear.

This is made possible by extracting the key facial points on the subject’s face, such as the position of the eyes and mouth, then sending that data to the recipient. The AI technology then reconstructs the subject’s face and animates it in real time using the keypoint data, the end result being very low bandwidth usage compared to the image quality on the receiver’s end.

There are some other advantages to using AI-based compression that exceed the capabilities of traditional video technologies, as well. One example is Free View, a feature in which the AI platform can rotate the subject so that they appear to be facing the recipient even when, in reality, their camera is positioned off to the side and they appear to be staring into the distance.

Likewise, the keypoints extracted from the subject’s face could also be used to apply their movements to other characters, including fully animated characters, expanding beyond the AI-powered filters that have become popular some video apps like Snapchat. Similar technology is already on the market in the form of Apple’s AI-based Animoji.

The use of artificial intelligence to modify videos isn’t new; most major video conferencing apps now include the option of replacing one’s real-life background with a different one, including intelligent AI-based background blurring. However, NVIDIA’s real-time AI-based video compression takes things to a new level by using AI to not only generate the subject in real time, but also modify them in convenient ways, such as aligning their face with a virtual front-facing camera.

The technology could usher in an era of clearer, more consistent video conferencing experiences, particularly for those on slow Internet connections, while using less data than current options. However, the demonstration has also raised concerns that largely mirror ones related to deepfake technologies — namely, the potential for exploiting such technologies to produce inauthentic content.

Artificial intelligence technology is advancing at a clipped rate and, in many cases, can be used to imperceptibly alter videos and images. Work is already underway to exceed those capabilities, however, by fully generating photo-realistic content using AI rather than modifying existing real-world content.

The Allen Institute for AI recently demonstrated the latest evolution in this effort by using both images and text to create a machine learning algorithm that possesses a very basic sense of abstract reasoning, for example. NVIDIA Research has also contributed extensively to this rapidly evolving technology, with past demonstrations including generating landscapes from sketches, generating photo-realistic portraits and even swapping facial expressions between animals.

A number of companies are working to develop counter technologies capable of detecting manipulated content by looking for markers otherwise invisible to the human eye. In 2019, Adobe Research teamed up with UC Berkeley to develop and demonstrate an AI capable of not only identifying portrait manipulations, but also automatically reversing the changes to display the original, unmodified content.

The general public doesn’t yet have access to these types of technologies, however, generally leaving them vulnerable to the manipulated media that permeates social media.

Blackrapid develops strap designed for women photographers

Accessories manufacturer Blackrapid has introduced a new version of its shoulder sling camera strap that is designed to be especially comfortable for female photographers. The Nicole Elliot by Blackrapid uses wide pad to hug the shoulder and take the pressure away from the neck and distribute weight more evenly. The company says the design is based on the way ‘women have been carrying their babies for centuries’, and promises the camera will feel virtually weightless.

Caltech research team develops lensless camera

Smartphone cameras have improved considerably over the past few years but despite innovations such as image stacking and dual cameras with image fusion technology the cameras are still limited by the laws of physics. This becomes particularly evident when looking at the ‘tele’ lenses that have cropped up on some recent high-end smartphones with dual cameras, such as the iPhone 7 Plus or Xiaomi Mi6.

Due to space constraints in the slim smartphone bodies these lenses use smaller sensors and offer considerably slower apertures than their wide angle counterparts which makes them a lot less usable in lower light conditions. However, now it looks like a research team at Caltech could have found a solution to the problem. They have developed an ‘optical phased array’ chip that uses algorithms instead of a lens to focus the incoming light beam. A time delay which can be as short as a quadrillionth of a second, is added to the light captured at different locations on the chip. This allows for modifying focus without a lens.

Professor Ali Hajimiri says the system ‘can switch from a fisheye to a telephoto lens instantaneously – with just a simple adjustment in the way the array receives light.’ The existing 2D, lensless camera array consists of an 8×8 grid with 64 sensors and is capable of capturing a low resolution image of a barcode. The current image results are a long way from current smartphone cameras but at this point the system is only a proof of concept and potential commercial applications are a few years in the future. The team’s next objective is to use larger receivers that are more sensitive and capable of capturing higher-resolution images.

Sony develops 22MP smartphone sensor with on-chip AF processing and video IS

Sony has announced a 22.5MP Exmor RS imaging sensor for smartphones. The new stacked 1/2.6″ CMOS sensor, called IMX318, is smaller than most used by current smartphones and includes on-chip processing for AF and video image stabilization. Sony has used pixels measuring 1.0µm, allowing for a smaller sensor with higher resolution to be included in likewise slimmer mobile devices. For comparison, this sensor is 20% smaller than the 1/2.3″ chip commonly used in smartphones.

Like many current smartphone sensors, the IMX318 uses phase-detection AF elements combined with contrast-detection to create ‘hybrid AF,’ and the company claims AF reporting 0.03 seconds. According to Sony, IMX318 has such an efficient data interface that pixels can be read at 30 fps from across the entire surface. This allows the company to use the whole 22.5MP resolution for video recording – although the footage is scaled to 4K – and full resolution stills to be captured during video shooting. HD movies can be recorded at up to 120 fps, and 720p footage at 240 fps.

While this sensor is most suitable for the smartphone market, the technology could soon move into larger sensors for compact, mirrorless and DSLR cameras. IMX318 will go on sale in May, according to Sony, at a price of ¥2000/$ 17.50/£12.30 per unit. Sony Announces a New Type 1/2.6 22.5 Megapixel Exmor RS™, the Industry’s First*1 Stacked CMOS Image Sensor with Built-in Hybrid Autofocus and 3-Axis Electronic Image Stabilization

Tokyo, Japan – Sony Corporation (“Sony”) is announcing the commercialization of a new Exmor RS™ image sensor for smartphones and other devices that require increasingly better cameras and thinner form factors. The IMX318 is a type 1/2.6 stacked CMOS image sensor with 22.5 effective megapixels, and it boasts a more compact size, greater image quality, and higher performance. This new image sensor not only boasts enhanced resolution, but it also matches its predecessor in image quality despite the IMX318’s smaller size and unit pixels (IMX230 predecessor model: type 1/2.4 sensor with 1.12?m unit pixel size). Hybrid AF
Hybrid AF, which merges image plane phase detection AF with contrast detection AF, has previously been realized through the combination of an image sensor and an application processor. But with the IMX318, Sony has created the industry’s first*1 stacked CMOS image sensor with hybrid AF built into the sensor’s internal signal processor. The IMX318 leverages Sony’s high-speed AF technology that has been honed over many years, boasting an AF as fast as 0.03 seconds*2 (and as fast as 0.017 seconds when shooting video at 60fps). With this power in hand, the user can capture those decisive moments reliably in focus, whether shooting stills or video.

With the IMX318, Sony has also created the industry’s first*1 stacked CMOS image sensor with image stabilization functionality built into its internal signal processor. This sensor leverages the image stabilization technology that Sony has cultivated over its years developing cameras, realizing smooth 4K*3 videos with little camera shake by making effectively use of the signal output obtained from the external 3-axis (pitch, yaw, and roll) gyro sensor*4. Sony’s unique image stabilization technology incorporated into the IMX318 corrects not only camera shake, but also lens distortion, making for more beautiful videos. Furthermore, because image stabilization is achieved by processing within the hardware of the image sensor, less power is used than when it is accomplished by software processing in the external application processor. Since it enables smooth video shooting, this image sensor is suited for incorporation into not only smartphones, but also a variety of other products that tend to generate substantial camera shake, such as aerial drones used for image capture.

3. 4K and high frame rate video recording, through high-speed communications leveraging the latest MIPI specifications

Sony elected to adopt the MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) Alliance’s latest C-PHY 1.0/D-PHY 1.2 specifications for this image sensor’s interface. With this interface, the IMX318 is able to achieve more power efficient and faster data transmission from the image sensor to the application processor. As a result, even at the high resolution of 22.5 megapixels, transmission is realized for all pixels at 30fps. This enables seamless switching between high resolution video and still image photography, realizing the best of both worlds. Since the image sensor can transmit greater-than-4K resolution images for all pixels to the application processor, the user can capture 22.5 megapixel still images even while in the middle of recording video in 4K*3 at 30fps

Sony develops sensor capable of rendering color images at 0.005 lux

Sony has introduced a new CMOS sensor, calling it the highest sensitivity sensor of its kind. Developed for automotive use, the new chip can capture color images in light conditions down to 0.005 lux. The sensor is 1/3-inch type with 1.27 effective megapixels, and supports a Wide Dynamic Range system that uses extended exposure times rather than using multiple exposures. Read more

Tamron develops full-frame 15-30 f/2.8 ultra-wide zoom with vibration correction

Tamron has announced the development of its new SP 15-30mm f/2.8 DI VC USD ultra-wide zoom lens. This full-frame lens is the first in its class to offer image stabilization according to Tamron. The lens has an ultrasonic focusing motor, ‘eBAND’ and fluorine coatings, and a 9-blade diaphragm. The lens will be available for Canon, Nikon, and Sony mounts and will be displayed at Photokina next week.

Casio develops Exilim EX-FR10 two-part action cam with wireless monitor

Casio is set to launch a new action cam in September, featuring a wireless camera unit that is detatchable from the main body. The Casio Exilim EX-FR10, which will initially be only available in the Japanese market, uses a Bluetooth connection with a range of up to 10m between the body and the camera so images can be recorded remotely and monitored on the 2-inch 230,400-dot touch screen. Read more

Tamron has announced the development of an all-in-one ‘superzoom’ lens for APS-C SLRs with a huge 18.8x range. The 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Macro will offer an unusually wide angle view for its class (24-450mm equivalent), while also allowing close-up shooting with 0.34x magnification.
