Anti-Gravity Boots: London Shoe Artwork Defies Laws & Physics

anti gravity shoes street

There are many theories, but no one is quite sure where the practice of throwing shoes over raised urban infrastructure started. Some suggest bullies take shoes from other kids and toss them over power and telephone lines; other think it could be a way of marking gang or drug-dealing territories. Or perhaps people just make and lose bad bets, paying the price with sore feet.

Whatever the reason, London street artist Pejac (images by Gary Van Handley) has taken the shoe-on-a-wire concept to the next level, with individual and paired shoes seeming to hang upside-down, pulled inexplicably toward the sky. Presumably to minimize annoyance to the city (and possible damage to critical lines), the artist in this case opted to use poles rather than wires for support.

Titled Downside Up, this series of shoe art installations across East London are in part a series of street artworks but also a viral marketing campaign for an upcoming solo exhibit. Pejac is well known for both silly and thought-provoking interventions, often manipulating built environments in subtle ways by pealing paint or through small installations easily missed by less observant passersby.

Eff You: Sleek & Superior Bicycle Defies Global Racing Rules

rule breaking bike

This stunning concept bike breaks from conventions set by international racing authorities to bring riders a vastly improved cycling experience, from enhanced aerodynamics and speed assists to smartphone functionality and storage space.

specialized custom bike

Creative Director at Specialized, Robert Egger, designed  fUCI (a jab at the UCI, or: Union Cycliste Internationale) as a functional and physical critique: “The UCI really caters to a very small population, but there’s so many other people out there who couldn’t care less about the UCI,” he explains. “They don’t follow the racing and they don’t even know all the limitations that are put on bikes for the UCI riders. So, my feeling was let’s design a bike for someone who really just wants to go fast on a road bike.”

specialized iphone slot

Wheels are supposed to be the same size, but differently-sized ones in this model help riders get up to high speeds more quickly. An added motor assist works like a turbo on a sports car, something completely accepted in that vehicular realm but unusual on bikes, “so just like when you ride the turbo and you put your foot on the pedal and it lurches forward, the same thing here.”

smart bike powered wheel

“This little motor will get the flywheel up to speed so when you’re stopped at a stop sign, or when you’re starting out of your garage in the morning, this’ll be that burst of power to get the flywheel up and running.”

smart bike seat storage

The shape is dramatic and impressive, but also pragmatic; it facilitates, for example, clever seat storage space for odds and ends (like keys or wallets) or potential essentials like spare tires and tubes.

front slot

A slot in front, protected by an aerodynamic mud and wind guard, lets you put your smart device in place for navigation, too.

The goal of this project is in part to raise awareness of what bikes can be when stripped of the rules people think are common sense but are really tied to the limited and specialized world of racing. The hacks in this case enhance functionality on various fronts and, frankly, produce a much more awesome-looking ride, too.

Center of Infinity: 360-Degree House Defies Dimensionality

futuristic infinity house design

Forget floors, get over familiar geometries and start really thinking in three dimensions if you want to understand this futuristic and multifaceted home concept. Levels are secondary – the focus is movement, interior experience and exterior interaction.

futuristic floors walls ceilings

Didier Faustino (images via By Encore) took to the Solo Houses challenge with an outside-in approach, but avoided the typical mistakes of many Postmodern shape-oriented architects who aim for appearance over function.

futuristic house exterior interior

Dubbed In the Center of the Infinite, the jagged form frames a residential experience of open space, light and views, with occupiable levels filling in around human needs.

Outside, the object spikes out in all directions, clad in rusted steel and perforated by huge windows. Inside, the plan is wide open and floors bleed into walls, which in turn blend into ceilings. This effect is reinforced by a uniform use of plywood and similarly-colored materials throughout.

About the Portugese designer: “Didier Fiuza Faustino works reciprocally summons up art from architecture and architecture from art. Spaces, buildings and objects show themselves to be platforms for the intersection of the individual body and the collective body in their use. Each project represents a concept that subverts the social context, in which seeing is experimenting beyond submission to the dichotomy of the rules that normally mark out public space and private space.”

Escher + Inception: Tour a Digital World that Defies Physics

27 Jul

surreal human interface cube

This video thrives on convention – specifically: breaking with it. In the same vein as M.C. Escher, The Matrix or, more recently, Inception (or even the building flips and slides in Transformers), this surreal experience calls into question everyday architectures that surround us.

Imagine a world where urban fabric was what the latter implies: a delicate, woven-together series of structures and infrastructure forever flipped and rearranged at the whim of … whom? Perhaps you, perhaps another consciousness, or perhaps something created by a blind watchmaker, as it were, rotating city blocks like rows on a Rubik’s Cube.

Be sure to view the above realistic animated video in full size for the complete effect. Our brain recognizes patterns, then expects those things within such patterns (like trains on rails, or a waterfall) to conform to known laws of physics and thermodynamics – strip away that certainty and you start to learn something about human cognition and our relationship to world.

surreal room glowing light

From the project creator, Chris Kelly, who created this as a graduate project: “Our understanding of space is not always a direct function of the sensory input but a perceptual undertaking in the brain where we are constantly making subconscious judgements that accept or reject possibilities supplied to us from our sensory receptors,” he says. “This process can lead to illusions or manipulations of space that the brain perceives to be reality.”

surreal bionic eye reality

The thesis that goes with these videos and images:  Time and Relative Dimensions in Space: The Possibilities of Utilising Virtual[ly Impossible] Environments in Architecture. “The redirection techniques and the use of overlapping architecture allow the same physical space to hold a much larger virtual space”, giving it all kinds of applications in collaborative gaming and interactive art as well as architectural and urban design.

More on the project: “The aim of the rubix project was to develop an animation that described a conceptual tool for deploying these malleable virtual environments that could be used by their creators to shift space around us. The rubix concept stemmed from the need for an algorithmic formula for controlling the use of redirection techniques; it allows for many different spatial combinations whilst a level of control is constantly maintained. In the animation the initial Escher-esque space is a representation of our perceptual system where huge amounts of information arrive in the brain from multiple streams. The process of perception involves the brain selecting and rejecting contradicting pieces of information leading to a perception of reality that only gives us glimpses into the world we are in.”
