DIY: Geometric Wall Décor

31 Oct

Extra photos for bloggers: 1, 2, 3

What do the Pythagorean Theorum, protractors and high school students scratching their heads all have in common? Geometry!

Geometry isn’t always fun, but when you combine (or add) it with photos, the results are just fantastic.

Hang your photos in triangles for to create totally fun geometric wall décor that’ll really (math) class up your walls.

Even those of us who are less than stellar at geometry, need not fear. This project is easy as 3.14.

Create Your Own Geometric Wall Décor

Why It’s Cool

Traditional wall hangings can be really square.

That’s why we love the idea of hanging our photos in triangles.

Even if you’re not so handy with a protractor, they’re easy to make.

And, they make really great gifts. Who doesn’t love a good hexagon?

Ingredients:

  • Photos
  • Scissors
  • Surface to Cut on
  • Pen
  • Glue
  • Utility Knife
  • Mat Board (cardboard will work too)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Twine (fishing line or yarn will do too)
  • T-Square or Ruler

STEP 1: Cut the Board

before

On the cutting surface use your T-square and utility knife to cut strips of mat board (they’ll be the 3 sides of your triangles).

Remember to press firmly on the T-square and watch your fingers when cutting the board. Sometimes it takes a couple of slices with the utility knife to cut the board.

You can choose the size of your strips depending on how big you want your triangles to be.

We made 1 inch x 4 inch strips.

STEP 2: Let’s Get Triangular

before

Place one strip of mat board on your cutting surface and put hot glue on both ends.

Smoosh two more pieces of mat board into the hot glue to form a triangle.

Put a small stripe of hot glue on the top of the triangle to fasten it tight.

Let the glue dry for a couple of minutes.

STEP 3: Tracing Time

before

Place your (now dry) triangle on top of a photo and trace around the outside of the triangle.

STEP 4: Cut the Triangle

before

Cut out the triangle you just traced.

STEP 5: Fasten the Photo

before

Place a light layer of glue (non-hot kind) along the edges of your photo triangle.

Press your mat board triangle onto the glued photograph and let it sit for about 30 minutes to make sure it’s firmly attached.

STEP 6: Make a Hexagon

before

Using your hot glue gun, glue the sides of your triangles and join them together to form a hexagon.

STEP 7: Hang it High

before

Cut a strip of twine and glue it on to the back of your hexagon to make it hangable.

Then hang it. It looks so good up there on your wall!

Taking It Further

  • Make different sized triangles to create super large hexagons or really small hexagons to use as little ornaments.
  • Paint the mat board or cardboard with a color of your liking.
  • Experiment with different shapes to create a new polygon. Layer different sized shapes on top of one another to create a multidimensional piece.

3D Printed Home Decor Main

3D printing has enabled designers to take the manufacturing process into their own hands for the creation of one-of-a-kind objects, many of which you can buy to liven up your home decor. The computer-generated designs are printed in three dimensions in materials like plastic, ceramic and metal, and are often based on mathematical algorithms. Here are 14 lamps, light switches, tea cups and more that are available for purchase.

Jellyfish Lamp Shade

3D Printed Home Decor Jellyfish Lamp

This intricate two-piece Jellyfish lampshade was designed using fractal techniques and 3D computer-aided design methods, inspired by a modified Mandelbulb fractal. The dangling ‘tentacles’ are chains that billow around in the wind. It works with a standard IKEA bulb kit.

Aqueduct Mini Planter Set

3D Printed Home Decor Aqueduct Planter

This 10-pack of Aqueduct Mini Planters hooks together into a modular system that shares water from one unit to the next. The water flows from the top planters into the bottom. Made up of 3 double-channel planters and 7 single-channel planters, it can be assembled in all sorts of configurations and hooked up with additional sets to create window-sized screens of plants.

Switch-a-Lope

3D Printed Home Decor Switch-a-Lope

This fun light switch plate adds both visual interest and extra functionality: the antlers can be used as hooks for keys or to hold your cell phone.

Star Lamp

3D Printed Home Decor Star Lamp

You can get this cool star lamp customized to a specific place, date and time in history to reproduce the sky of a special moment, like when you were born. Printed in sandstone and fitted with a battery-operated light, it makes for a cool accent lamp or night light.

1st Floor Mug

3D Printed Home Decor 1st Floor Mug

Says the designer of this unusual 3D-printed mug, “In the grand manner of the very best salons of old, this mug is raised up on an arcade so that it may occupy the airy summit of its own ‘Piano Nobile’. Elevated above the common detritus of your breakfast table, this dining item elegantly maintains the dignified sanctity of your morning brew.”

Pencil Icosahedron

3D Printed Decor Pencil Icosahedron

Build your own three-dimensional Icosahedron out of 30 pencils using a simple kit of 3D-printed plastic joints. The resulting object can be used as a functional lampshade, a toy or decor. You can even adjust the size by using shorter or longer pencils.

Birds Nest Egg Cup

3D Printed Home Decor Bird Egg Cup

Put a bird (back) on your egg with these cute little 3D-printed egg cups, which will hold medium eggs or flex to accommodate larger-sized eggs.

Spectral Studio: 20 Sq M Space Uses Light & Dark as Decor

illuminated apartment

In an Paris apartment with just over 200 square feet, it is almost impossible to imagine anything but the more bare essentials resulting a boring space. But that is where illumination enters the equation, flooding in to add depth and complexity to this abode. This, then, is a short story of light.

illumination study axon existing

The architects, Betillon | Dorval?Bory, examined the limited space available architecturally, but also scientifically, testing the type and quality of the natural light to be found (and then suggesting what should be carefully introduced) across the existing interior zones.

illuminate room two tone

A single wall was introduced, dividing the main bedroom area from daytime activity spaces like the kitchen, but not just (nor even primarily) as a visual barrier – it was intentionally and most-importantly designed to be a backdrop for two types of light.

illuminated night sleeping area

On the ‘night’ side: a diffused orange streetlamp glow of the after-hours city that we associate with evening, which washes the walls in a more monochromatic direction (suited for sleeping and showering). On the ‘day’ side, a pure all-purpose white of the kind found in active spaces like offices – one which allows us to see things in black and color as well (suited for cooking and gathering).

illuminated flat natural daylight

Notably, the ‘night’ side lights can also be turned off (or overpowered by daylight), allowing the entire place to ‘open’ into a single space. If there is a lesson to be learned here, it is that physical objects are not the only things that form (or inform) the nature of space. Spatial variety can come via intangible elements like illumination, which in turn can serve equally powerful functions in fleshing out a space – particularly a small place with little room for solid decor.

Self-Defense Decor: 3 Furshings Fend Off Home Invaders

Clubs, axes and bats are anything but typical furniture, and may be off-putting to ordinary people visiting your house. Hence these hybrid designs, in which weapons are built right into nightstands, coat racks and coffee tables.

First, a classic: the James McAdam bat-and-shield bedside-table set that started out as a concept design, but through a cycle of positive viral feedback has not made it into production and is available for purchase.

From its creator: “Here it is the [safest bedside table] you can buy. Made from Birch [plywood] Maple and Leather this table is priced at $ 245. It has been developed [since being] exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art NY and now being made in the UK for sale worldwide.”

Next, a spiked club from The Principals.  “Crossing a classic piece of sports equipment with an everyday household piece of furniture, the Bat Rack uses iconographic items to create a unique piece that functions both passively and actively, to serve and protect.

“As a weapon of self defense and a place to hang your belongings, the Bat Rack can be installed on any wall by swinging, spike-end first, or used to stop any burglar in their tracks. Constructed from solid Carolinian maple and hand-turned stainless steel, the Bat Rack is inspired by the supple curves of Danish mid-century masters and the crack of a bat heard from neighborhood sandlots.”

Finally, from designer Chris Duffy, the less-practical but quite-beautiful axe table. “Walnut veneer or light Oak veneer from Stewardship Council managed forests and other controlled sources, the solid hickory axe handles are specially imported from the USA. Resin composite axe heads.”

Transforming Decor Reveals Secrets via Spills, Wear & Tear

25 Aug

Kristine Bjaadal creates objects with hidden stories to tell – everyday objects with secret tales shown only under strange circumstances, such as tabletop spills or time-worn seating.

A small change making a big impact on the future is known as the butterfly effect. In this case, the accidental tipping of a glass reveals a flock of butterflies lying invisible but in wait right on your tablecloth, titled Underfull.

Or consider the inevitability of fabric wearing thin on your favorite upholstered chair – what if that almost-invariably negative process were turned into something positive, via, say, a pattern that emerges as the surface material layer gets slowly stripped away, named Underskog.

Along similar lines, but requiring less time (but perhaps some until you or your guest notices it), are these so-called Undertone dishes with out-of-sight rings of color below their raised edges. It is only when picked up – or better yet: spotted in reflection on the top of a table – that these tones become clearly visible.
