Raw video output for Panasonic Lumix DC-S1H now available

Panasonic has announced firmware version 2.1 for the Lumix DC-S1H. Originally slated for a May launch, this firmware adds support for Raw video output to Atomos Ninja V external recorders, which in turn can save the footage as ProRes Raw. The maximum output resolutions are 5.9K/29.97p from the full sensor region and 4K/59.94p from a Super 35 crop. A LUT will be made available for the Ninja V to match V-Log and V-Gamut on the S1H and other Panasonic video cameras.

In addition to Raw export, the firmware update also gives the S1H the ability to capture 3.5K anamorphic from a Super 35 4:3 region.

The update is available free of charge and can be downloaded from Panasonic’s website.

Panasonic announces 5.9K ProRes Raw video for Lumix DC-S1H

Panasonic has announced firmware V2.0 for the Lumix S1H that, alongside the usual bug fixes, adds the ability to output 5.9K or 4K Raw video data that can be captured as ProRes Raw when connected to an Atomos Ninja V recorder.

Raw video provides editors with more post processing flexibility than Log-encoded footage, including Panasonic’s own V-Log, and provides similar capabilities to Raw photo editing, such as the ability to set a new white balance after footage is shot.

Apple recently released a version 1.0 beta of ProRes Raw for Windows that added support to Adobe apps running on the Windows platform, including Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Availability on both Apple and Windows systems should make it easier for video shooters to adopt the codec.

Firmware V2.0 for the Panasonic S1H adds ProRes Raw video capture capability when paired with an Atomos Ninja V recorder.

The firmware, which doesn’t require a paid upgrade, adds 5.9K 16:9 capture from the full width of the sensor at up to 30p or 4K 17:9 capture from a Super 35 region at up to 60p. There’s also a 4:3 option for anamorphic Super 35 shooting. All modes are based on 12-bit output.

Unlike ProRes Raw capture on Nikon’s Z6, the Panasonic does not pixel skip to produce its Raw video data stream. Its viewfinder also continues to function when Raw data is being output, which is likely to be a benefit for anyone shooting hand-held footage.

A full suite of exposure support tools, including Wave Form Monitor, Vector Scope, Luminance Spot Meter, Zebra Pattern remains available.

Alongside Raw video options, a series of minor UI and handling improvements have been added, and a series of minor bugs fixed. The firmware will be available from May 25th.

2) Enhanced video functions / improved performance

  • Downconverted output over HDMI during [6K]/[5.9K]/[5.4K] video recording is available.
  • In Creative Video mode, it is possible to disable the operation of starting/stopping video recording by pressing a shutter button.
  • In Creative Video mode, it is possible to set [Rec Quality(My List)] from the control panel.
  • The value of noise reduction in [V-Log] in Photo Style has been expanded to [-1]. It suppresses afterimages previously occurred in some situations.
  • It is possible to prevent the enlarged view window of MF Assist to be output over HDMI.
  • There were cases where color banding appeared in 4:2:0/10-bit video recording in some situations. This bug has been minimized.
  • There were cases where the REC RUN time code did not count up when the video was not recorded on an SD Memory Card but was recorded on an external device over HDMI. This bug has been fixed.

3) Other added functions / improvements

  • It is possible to set [AF+MF] in AFC mode.
  • It is possible to assign functions to the lens’ Fn buttons when the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200) is mounted.
  • It is possible to assign function to the Fn buttons of Sigma L-Mount interchangeable lenses.
  • When attaching a lens using the Sigma MC-21 mount converter and [Image Stabilizer] > [Lens] is set to ON , Body I.S.(Image Stabilizer) suppresses roll movement.
  • [Backlight Illumination Period] has been added to the menu of Status LCD. [ON1] prevents the LCD backlight to be turned off.
  • It is possible to select the card slot to save the JPEG images developed by in-camera RAW processing.
  • [0.5 SEC] has been added for an option of [Duration Time (photo)] in [Auto Review].
  • [Off (Disable Press and Hold)] can be assigned to the Fn button. It disables operation when the button is long-pressed.
  • Fn button can be used for checking aperture effect while the button is pressed.
  • To prevent improper operation, touch-control is disabled for [Delete All] operation in playback mode. Only cursor buttons can be used for [Delete All] operation.
  • There were rare cases where the camera froze during [Segmented File Recording] or during recording at 400 Mbps under a particular set of conditions including the type of SD Card used. This phenomenon has been improved.
  • Aperture and shutter speed can be controlled using front/rear dials when the rear monitor is set to OFF.
  • There were cases where F value control failed depending on the maximum F value when non-Panasonic L-Mount lens is mounted. This bug has been fixed.

Panasonic Lumix DC-S1H 4K sample reel

As part of our upcoming review, here’s our 4K sample reel, shot using the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1H at Seattle’s Emerald City Soul Club.

All footage is DCI 4K, 23.98p in the 400Mbps mode, with the exception of a short 60p clip, marked in the video. The camera’s Cinelike D2 color profile was used throughout, with minimal color grading subsequently applied.

Interview footage was all shot from a tripod, using the Panasonic 24-70mm F2.8 lens. The bulk of the in-club footage was shot using an L-mount Sigma 24mm F1.8 Art, and mounted on a DJI Ronin-S gimbal unless otherwise noted. All clips were manually focused due to the extreme low-light nature of the club.

The Panasonic S1H is a full-frame mirrorless camera designed specifically with videographers in mind. It includes advanced video features such as 6K resolution, 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording, V-Log gamma, video scopes, anamorphic support and numerous small details a videographer would love. As a bonus, it’s also a very competent 24MP stills camera.

Panasonic has long been at the vanguard of mirrorless cameras aimed at videographers, and its popular GH-series of Micro Four Thirds cameras has consistently led the way with class-leading video performance. Panasonic’s upcoming Lumix DC-S1H cinema camera can capture 6K video

Panasonic has announced the development of its video-focused, full-frame Lumix DC-S1H mirrorless camera, which will be available in the third quarter of 2019 for $ 4000.

The S1H will be able to capture 6K/24p video from the 3:2 region of its sensor and 5.9K from the 16:9 area. The camera will also be capable of 10-bit 4K/60p recording. In addition, it will support multi-aspect recording, such as anamorphic 4:3. Regardless of what video setting you’re using, the S1H will be able to keep recording until the battery dies or your card fills up.

The S1H has been designed to produce video virtually identical to that of Panasonic’s pro-level VariCam cinema camera, through the use of V-Log and V-Gamut. The company claims that the S1H will match the VariCam in terms of both dynamic range (14+ stops) and color reproduction.

Panasonic Lumix S1R, S1H and S1

Panasonic says it plans to have ten L-mount lenses by the end of 2020 and, via EF and PL adapters, S1H users will be have access to more than 50 cinema lenses from its L-mount partners Sigma and Leica.

And that’s all we know about the S1H at this point. A prototype will be shown at the CineGear expo this weekend, and we have no doubt that Panasonic will drip out more information in the months to come.

Panasonic Announces the New LUMIX S1H Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

With Cinema-Quality Video and the World’s First 6K/24p*1 Recording Capability

Newark, NJ (May 31, 2019) – Panasonic Corporation is proud to announce the newest addition to the LUMIX S series, the LUMIX S1H, a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera equipped with a full-frame image sensor. As the world’s first camera capable of video recording at 6K/24p *1 (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K.*2 *3, it combines the video quality of a professional camera and the high mobility of a mirrorless camera. The LUMIX S1H will be released to world markets in fall 2019.

The main features of the new LUMIX S1H are as follows:

  1. High resolution up to 6K for multiple formats.

Maximizing the use of the pixels in the full-frame image sensor, the LUMIX S1H, as a digital camera, has achieved 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio) or 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio) video recording for the first time in the world.*1 It is also the world’s first full-frame digital interchangeable lens system camera*1 to enable 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K *2*3 video recording. It accommodates a variety of recording formats like 4:3 Anamorphic mode, to meet professional needs. Its high-resolution data can also be used to create 4K videos with higher image quality or to crop images in 4K.

  1. Rich gradation and a wide color space virtually equal to those of cinema cameras.

The LUMIX S1H features V-Log/V-Gamut with a wide dynamic range of 14+ stops, which are virtually the same as those of the Panasonic Cinema VariCam, allowing it to precisely capture everything from dark to bright areas. So much so, that the color and even the texture of human skin are faithfully reproduced. Designed under consistent color management, the S1H’s recorded footage is compatible with V-Log footage recorded by VariCam or the LUMIX GH5/GH5S.

In every S1H recording mode, video can be recorded non-stop under the certified operating temperature so the user can concentrate on shooting.
