Nikon D5300 and D5500 firmware 1.01 adds support for AF-P DX 18-55mm F3.5-56 lenses

28 Jan

Nikon has released firmware version 1.01 for its D5300 and D5500 cameras. Both updates add support for the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm F3.5–5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm F3.5–5.6G lenses, Nikon’s first DX lenses to offer stepping motors, as well as an a5 Manual focus ring in AF mode option for the D5500. Both updates also bring several bug fixes correcting issues affecting each model, such as camera freezing.

Nikon D5300 Firmware version 1.01:

  • AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G lenses are now supported. Vibration reduction can be enabled or disabled using the new Optical VR option in the photo SHOOTING MENU, which is displayed when an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR lens is attached.
  • The following issues have been addressed:
  • Choosing negative values for Exposure compensation in the RETOUCH MENU > NEF (RAW) processing display did not have the desired effect.
  • Continued scrolling of the menus for some languages would cause the camera to freeze.

Nikon D5500 Firmware version 1.01:

  • AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G lenses are now supported. Vibration reduction can be enabled or disabled using the new Optical VR option in the photo SHOOTING MENU, which is displayed when an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR lens is attached. The CUSTOM SETTING MENU now contains an a5 Manual focus ring in AF mode option that can be enabled or disabled when an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR or AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G is attached.
  • The following issues have been addressed:
  • Noise would occur at four-second intervals in audio output to external recorders connected via HDMI in movie live view.
  • Choosing negative values for Exposure compensation in the RETOUCH MENU >  NEF (RAW) processing display did not have the desired effect.
  • Selecting ON for Exposure smoothing during interval timer photography would result in all shots after the first being overexposed.

The Nikon D5300 firmware update and D550 firmware update are both available from Nikon’s website.

Nikon D5300 review: Approachable, yet serious

13 Feb

d5300.jpg

The Nikon D5300 presents an entry-level photographer with some serious specifications, starting with a 24 megapixel APS-C sensor. It shapes up to be quite the formidable DX-format camera with 1080/60p HD video recording, built-in Wi-Fi/GPS, a 39-point AF system and a flip-out LCD. It’s not short on features, but do its handling and image quality match the tall specs list? Read our full review

Nikon D5300 adds pixels, Wi-Fi, and GPS while leaving AA filter behind

17 Oct

Nikon has announced its new D5300 midrange DSLR which, as you might have gathered, is the follow-up to the D5200. New features include the omission of an AA filter from its 24MP CMOS sensor, a larger 3.2in articulated LCD and also a slightly larger optical viewfinder, 1080/60p video, and built-in Wi-Fi and GPS. Nikon claims that the D5300’s Expeed 4 processor improves performance (allowing for 5 fps burst shooting) and photo quality, while reducing power consumption. You’ll be able to pick up the D5300 this month, in your choice of black, red, or gray. Click through for more details.

Movin’ on up: Nikon D5300 first impressions review

17 Oct

d5300thumb.png

Nikon’s latest consumer DSLR, the D5300, evolves the design of its predecessor but raises the feature bar, bringing it closer to the D7100. In fact, it’s likely that the 24MP D5300 even uses the sensor of its big brother since it also lacks an AA filter. The D5300’s larger LCD and viewfinder serve to further close the gap, while built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, and 1080/60p video recording go beyond what the D7100 offers. We’ve had some time with a pre-production D5300, and you can click through to read our first impressions review.
