Google Images launches ‘Licensable’ badge, making it easier for users to identify creators and license images

In collaboration with Shutterstock, Google has announced the launch of licensable images on Google Images. This feature entered beta testing earlier this year and is now fully launched and integrated into Google Images, hopefully benefiting photographers. With the new ‘Licensable’ badge on Google Image search results, viewers can immediately identify which images can be licensed for varying uses and better understand the usage rights of individual images.

Shutterstock worked closely with Google to ensure the licensable images feature works effectively. Of the new features, Shutterstock’s VP of Content Operations, Paul Brennan, says:

‘Google Images’ new features help both image creators and image consumers by bringing visibility to how creators’ content can be licensed properly. We are pleased to have worked closely with Google on this feature, by advocating for protections that result in fair compensation for our global community of over 1 million contributors. In developing this feature, Google has clearly demonstrated its commitment to supporting the content creation ecosystem.’

When an image has specified license information on a website, the image can be displayed with the Licensable badge on image thumbnails in Google Images. This badge indicates to viewers that license information is available for the image and then provides a link directly to the license in the image viewer. From here, someone can learn how the image can be licensed and used.

For Google to be able to discover and index images on a website, the images must be accessible without an account or by logging in. You must also follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and Google Images Best Practices. In addition to these existing steps, the new Licensable badge requires structured data or IPTC photo metadata to follow Google’s new guidelines. You can learn more about these requirements here.

With the introduction of the Licensable badge, search results in Google Images can now be filtered to only display images that include licensing. Further, the dropdown Usage Rights filter has been streamlined, such that it now includes only options for ‘All’, ‘Creative Commons licenses’ and ‘Commercial & other licenses’.

It has long been far too easy for people to search for images on Google and use them without a license or permissions. Today’s changes to Google Images will hopefully reduce image misuse. At the very least, assuming a photographer has taken the steps to ensure their images are properly badged and filtered on Google Images, it will now be much easier for Google Images users to view creator information and licensing requirements.

Photoshop ‘Infinite Jokes’ plugin keeps creators amused while they’re working

A free new Photoshop plugin from Infinite Tools adds an endless stream of jokes and puns to your workflow. Called ‘Infinite Jokes,’ the plugin was inspired by a recent request for jokes from viewers made by image retoucher Pratik Naik of Infinite Tools, he explained in his unveiling of the new plugin. The tool is a bit more sophisticated than merely showing jokes; it also enables users to rate the quality of the puns and to submit their own.

Infinite Jokes is, according to Infinite Tools, ‘A sassy panel that tells you the best PS jokes and openly judges you as you work!’ One example of a joke presented by the panel is:

Plastic surgery is like retouching. When it’s bad, it’s really bad. When it’s good, you won’t even know.

The jokes were submitted by the photo-editing community, which can continue to contribute jokes for inclusion in the plugin. Infinite Tools says users are able to choose whether the jokes are presented in the voice of a man or woman, as well as the accent used.

Every joke is presented alongside credit to the person who submitted it. In addition to rating the joke, users are also able to view the top jokes rated by users from around the world via the Infinite Tools website.

Because everyone has their own limitations and sensibilities, the company has also enabled plugin users to decide what type of jokes they want to hear — whether they want the jokes to be restricted only to ones that are funny, or to skew more toward the ‘mean’ end of the mood spectrum.

Users can also choose how often new jokes are spoken by the Infinite Jokes panel, with options ranging from every 15 seconds to twice an hour.

The plugin only works in Photoshop CC 2019 or newer and it requires an online connection to work. The Infinite Jokes plugin is free to download from the Infinite Tools website here.

Nikon announces new Z50 ‘Creator’s Kit’ with a slew of accessories at a discount

Nikon has announced a new ‘Creator’s Kit’ for its Nikon Z50 camera system that’s designed to create an all-in-one solution to get shooting, streaming and recording right out of the box at a price less than the sum of its parts.

The Nikon Z50 Creator’s Kit includes the Z50 camera body, the Nikkor Z DX 16–50mm F3.5–6.3 VR lens, a SmallRig Vlogging Mounting Plate, a Joby GorillaPod 3K and a Rode VideoMicro microphone, all of which comes in a Nikon-branded travel bag. Along with the hardware, Nikon includes free access to its ‘Creator’s Mindset: Creating Video Content with the Z 50’ online class.

If all of the items were purchased individually (not including the bag or course), the total would add up to roughly $ 1,400, give or take for taxes and other additional costs. The Nikon Z50 Creator’s Kit costs $ 1,149.95 and is currently available to pre-order on Nikon’s store, with an estimated shipping date of Thursday, May 21.

JOBY launches new lineup of accessories for mobile content creators

JOBY has launched a new line of accessories for mobile content creators, including products for the latest Pixel and iPhone smartphones. The lineup features six new products, including variants for different mobile phone models, with prices ranging from $ 40 to $ 200.

The most notable of the new products is the GorillaPod Mobile Vlogging Kit, a bundle that includes three products: the Beamo Mini LED with Bluetooth control, GorillaPod Mobile Rig and Wavo Mobile microphone. The kit includes a GripTight PRO 2 smartphone mount for shooting in portrait and landscape modes. The bundle is available now for $ 200.

The Beamo Mini LED, a compact and portable 1,000 lumens LED light, is available as a standalone accessory for $ 69.95; it includes double cold shoe mounts, plus it is rugged and waterproof. Joining this is the Beamo LED, which is brighter with 1,500 lumens and more expensive at $ 89.95.

Likewise, creators can order the Wavo Mobile, a portable, lightweight microphone designed for use with mirrorless cameras and smartphones. This model features a cold shoe mount, Rycote shock mount and included TRS and TRRS cables. The model is available now for $ 39.95. Platypod creators return with the new Platyball Ergo and Elite tripod heads

The Platypod creators are back with another product called Platyball, a new type of tripod head that features a unique design and more modern, convenient features. The Platyball is made with a weather-sealed aluminum unibody, steel components and polymer brake pads; it supports payloads of up to 10kg (22lbs).

Rather than featuring bubble indicators, the Platyball features a built-in leveling indicator offering an accuracy level of 0.5-degrees. The pricier Elite model is identical to the cheaper Ergo model, the only exception being its electronic leveling indicator system. The Platyball is designed for single-hand and gloved-hand use, plus it can be transported using a carabiner clipped to a bag or belt.

Other features include support for use in half a dozen directions, an adjustable brightness display for nighttime use, support for user calibration, an Arca-compatible twist collar, panning lock thumb wheel, two large buttons for locking and unlocking the device and support for standard A23 alkaline batteries.

The Platyball Ergo is offered to Kickstarter backers who pledge at least $ 199; the Platyball Elite for pledges of at least $ 249. The team estimates that shipping to backers will start in March 2021 and that the eventual retail prices will be $ 249 and $ 325, respectively. PolarPro introduces ultra-lightweight filter systems with active creators in mind

Today, California-based filter manufacturer, PolarPro, known for their premium ND and polarizing filters for cameras, as well as drones, announced the launch of two toolless, ultra-lightweight filter systems – one matte box, Basecamp, and one landscape filter system called Summit – designed to catapult professional creatives to the next skill level.

A base camp is a pillar of safety, as you head out into the unknown. It’s a haven to take shelter intermittently as battle the elements and push your limits to capture the best possible footage. Camera gear is getting heavier, especially lenses as higher quality optics are implemented. PolarPro designed BaseCamp, the lightest matte box system possible at 438 grams, to alleviate the burden heavier cameras put on operators and gimbals.

Built on the foundation of PolarPro’s Quartzline series, the toolless Variable Neutral Density configuration allows photographers and filmmakers to adapt to any lighting change instantly without having to swap out filters. Its modular design, constructed out of aluminum and carbon fibers, features a removable flag and hood that allows users to customize it to suit their production requirements.

Summit Landscape Filter System

Summit is a new range filter system aimed at photographers. It allows for toolless filter swapping and, like the BaseCamp system, has been designed with a large grip handle to minimize the risk of fingerprints on the filters. Summit filters screw onto the end of your lens and were constructed, with lightweight aluminum, in a fully light-sealed system to prevent light leakage.

The BaseCamp VND Kit retails for $ 799, its Core is $ 399, Rectangular Filters are $ 299 each, while Rails Kits come out to $ 119.99 each. Pixelstick creators unveil the Colorspike: An incredibly versatile LED lighting strip

The inventors of pixelstick have launched a new Kickstarter campaign to fund their latest creation: a strip of LEDs they’re calling the ‘colorspike.’ Like the pixelstick, it can be controlled via an app to produce a range of effects; unlike the pixelstick, the colorspike panel is more about lighting and color than it is about fun effects or light painting.

At about two feet long, the colorspike consists of a strip of LED lights that the user can program to produce a massive range of different colors and pulsating lighting effects. The results, when used in concert with, say, portrait photography, can be striking:

The idea is that stills and video photographers can use these to add easily controlled color to their shoots, while videographers can also include flashing lights to emulate emergency vehicles, fire, lightning and any interrupted lighting.

The colorspike panels are controlled via a smartphone app that allows colors and effects to be selected from an existing menu or to be custom mixed for the occasion (and saved for later use). Finally, groups of color spikes can be controlled together from the app to create more complex set-ups, and users can determine brightness, color and pulsation patterns via the app or the interface on the panel itself.

For on-location shooting, a battery is supplied that the company claims will last at least 45 minutes; and for those working near a mains power supply, a DC adapter also comes included the kit.

The colorspike is being launched on Kickstarter with a price of $ 270, and kits of four can be had for the discounted price of $ 1,000. The company, Bitbanger, expects delivery to begin in March next year if the target of $ 120,000 is reached—and given they’ve already reached over half of that goal with a full 42 days left in the campaign, chances are good the colorspike will become a reality

Hoverboard Creators Patent Hovering Homes for Disaster Zones

The creators of the world’s first working hoverboard have turned their sights toward larger-scale projects, patenting a three-part hovering foundation system to defend houses in earthquake- and flood-prone areas facing threats from natural disasters. The basic idea: decouple buildings from the ground temporarily, isolating them from unwanted movement happening below and around them.

Arx Pax, based in Silicon Valley and the creators of the Hendo Hoverboard using Magnetic Field Architecture (MFA), designed this new approach to floating homes during emergencies, using a buffer medium over a construction platform. Their physical technologies will be connected to ShakeAlert, an automatic warning software developed in part by the University of California, Berkeley and the U.S. Geological Survey.

“The ShakeAlert program aligns well with our long-term vision,” said Greg Henderson, co-founder and CEO at Arx Pax. “Weaving ShakeAlert into our MFA seismic isolation solution provides a valuable new tool to architects, engineers, and developers who are looking for a better way to build in areas affected by earthquakes. Currently, many large buildings already have countermeasures to protect them from strong winds or earthquake forces, but few small structures can afford similar protections. Arx Pax hopes to make similar approaches cost-effective for individual houses and lower buildings in general, raising them up in the face of floodwaters or shaking ground.
