June 2021 CIPA data: Steady shipments despite chip shortages and COVID-19 resurgences

The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) has released the production and shipment data of digital cameras and lenses for June 2021.

So far, in 2021, global camera shipments peaked in March, with 830,006 units. Since then, it’s been a steady decline, with June continuing that trend. That said, global camera shipments are still higher than last year for both volume and value. In June 2021 676,803 units valued at 39 billion yen shipped compared to 511,517 units worth 24.5 billion yen in June 2020, increases of 32.3 percent and 60.1 percent, respectively.

If we ignore compact camera sales and look only at interchangeable lens cameras, the numbers are fairly similar. June 2021 saw 442,679 units worth 33 billion yen shipped in June 2021 compared to 326,094 units worth 19.3 billion yen in June 2020, increases of 35.8 percent and 71.2 percent, respectively.

This data continues the trend we’ve seen over the past year or two wherein fewer units are being shipped (and eventually sold) than previous years, but the value of those units is higher, meaning the loss in volume for camera manufacturers is at least somewhat being made up for with an increase in revenue per unit. This trend is even more noticeable in the interchangeable lens camera market, where mirrorless cameras showed a 104 percent YoY increase in the value of units shipped in June 2021, despite volume only increasing 58 percent.

For comparison, June 2021 saw 191,560 DSLR units worth 7.1 billion yen shipped. Those are YoY increases of 14.6 percent and 7.8 percent respectively. What this shows is that despite more DSLR camera units being shipped globally, the value of those units is steadily decreasing. There could be a few reasons for this discrepancy, but the two most obvious ones are that camera companies are discounting their more expensive DSLR cameras to get rid of inventory ahead of the ongoing transition to mirrorless; the second is that those still buying DSLR cameras are more consumer-oriented customers who are getting entry-level DSLR cameras that retail for much less than prosumer and pro-grade DSLR cameras.

Another facet to take into account is the ongoing chip shortage. Camera and lens manufacturers have come out time and time again to announce delays due to the inability to source the required components, but it’s difficult to judge just how much this is affecting the production and shipment data at this time.

As for regional data, it’s a little more difficult to judge how shipment and production data is affecting the industry as a whole. There are geographical areas where COVID-19 and its variants are causing increases in cases and travel restrictions, while other areas have seen life more or less return to ‘normal,’ as obscure as that definition may be.

Whatever the case is, June 2021 continues the trends we’ve seen as of late and once again backs up the statements we’ve seen from various camera and lens manufacturers who’ve state that 2021 will be a year of equilibrium that will very much shape the state of the industry going forward.

Texas report details the harsh realities, risks of being a wedding photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic

A recent report of out South Texas reveals the harsh reality of being a wedding photographer in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. In an article titled ‘Texas Wedding Photographers Have Seen Some $ #!+’ shared by Texas Monthly, reporter Emily McCullar tells the story of a wedding photographer who was diagnosed with COVID-19 after it was revealed the groom of the party had tested positive for COVID-19 and didn’t inform the wedding photographer.

The photographer, who remains unnamed throughout the article, was informed of the groom’s positive diagnosis by a bridesmaid in the party. But not before the photographer had spent ‘an hour or two inside the unmasked wedding party’ taking photographs. The photographer said ‘[the bridesmaid] was looking for me to be like, “Oh, that’s crazy,” like I was going to agree with her that it was fine.’

That wasn’t the case though. The photographer suffers from asthma, a serious comorbidity factor that can increase the risks of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. Additionally, the photographer has three kids and a husband at home that she didn’t want to infect, should she end up COVID-19 positive.

After discovering the groom’s secret, the photographer and her assistant left. Texas Monthly notes ‘her exit was tense.’ ‘The wedding planner said it was the most unprofessional thing she’d ever seen […] Bridesmaids accused her of heartlessly ruining an innocent woman’s wedding day.’ The photographer even recollected a bridesmaid telling her ‘I’m a teacher, I have fourteen students. If I’m willing to risk it, why aren’t you?’

After leaving, the photographer ‘canceled her Thanksgiving plans with family, sent her kids to relatives’ houses so they wouldn’t get sick, and informed the brides of her upcoming weddings that she’d be subcontracting to other shooters,’ says Texas Monthly. Sure enough, a few days after the wedding, the photographer started feeling symptoms and eventually tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The photographer said the couple whose wedding she was photographing ‘didn’t care’ about the diagnosis and ‘didn’t offer to compensate her for the test, nor did they apologize for getting her sick.’

The article goes on to point out that this incident is far from an isolated one. As you browse through the hashtag ‘#TexasWedding’ on Instagram, there are a handful of images that show groups of friends and family celebrating matrimony with what appears to be little regard for protocols suggested for mitigating the spread of COVID-19, a disease that’s confirmed to have killed over 302,000 individuals in the United States alone.

The report details statements from other photographers, who share their experiences trying to shoot weddings throughout the pandemic. A reoccurring theme is a lack of masks, proper social distancing and little means of sanitation options, such as hand sanitizer.

As for the original wedding photographer, she recalled a heartbreaking conversation she had with a bridesmaid at the wedding:

‘I have children,’ she told a bridesmaid, ‘What if my children die?’ The bridesmaid responded, ‘I understand, but this is her wedding day.’

The report notes that not all wedding anecdotes it came across from photographers were as reckless as the featured one, but even in the anecdotes that featured more responsible weddings, nearly half of the guests were unmasked, including those who had high risk factors. While Texas reduced the size of wedding gatherings — from 500 to 250 individuals — there’s still plenty of risk in having that many individuals together at a single venue.

Vaccines are being distributed around the globe, but according to experts on the matter, it will still be a while before anything gets back to ‘normal,’ whatever that may look like. And until then, this unfortunate reality is what many wedding photographers (and other professions) will have to face as the death toll continues to rise, particularly in the United States.

CIPA’s October report shows camera market has mostly recovered from its COVID-19 downturn

It’s been a rather tumultuous year for camera sales atop a market already in decline, but the latest report from Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) shows the market is back in business and nearly recovered from the COVID-19 downturn.

CIPA, an industry association that aggregates shipment and sales information from the leading camera manufacturers, has shared its October numbers, which show the September recovery of shipments wasn’t a fluke. According to the October report, total digital camera sales – which include both fixed-lens cameras and interchangeable lens cameras – saw a total of 1.13 million units shipped. That’s still 22.8% fewer units shipped compared to October 2019, but that’s a far better shipment rate than the past six months, which have seen shipments hover around 50% of what they were in 2019 in the same months.

And the numbers look even better for interchangeable lens cameras. CIPA’s report says a total of 754K units were shipped, a decrease of just 13.6% compared to October 2019. Despite shipping fewer units, the monetary value of those shipments is up half a percentage point year-over-year (YoY) as well, showing the cameras being sold are more expensive models.

Interestingly, the increase in value from those shipments can be attributed only to mirrorless cameras. Globally, the monetary value of DSLR sales is down 22% YoY for October, aligned with overall unit shipments, while the monetary value of mirrorless shipments is up 11.9% YoY for October. In other words, the average revenue from global DSLR sales has more or less stayed the same while increasing for mirrorless camera sales. This backs up statements from multiple manufacturers – most notably Canon and Nikon in their investor reports – that higher-end, full-frame mirrorless models are selling better and will be the focus of their product lines.

The October report also confirms DSLR camera sales are on a far faster decline than mirrorless cameras, at least in most regions. Global DSLR shipments were at 338K units, down 21% YoY for October, while mirrorless camera shipments were 416K units, down just 6.4% YoY for October.

Where it gets interesting is when you look at shipments by region. The increase in monetary value of mirrorless camera shipments comes almost entirely down to China, which saw a 53.8% increase in value YoY for October. Also, Europe stands as an outlier in the DSLR market; according to CIPA’s report, while DSLR sales are down in volume and value to the United States, they’re only slightly down in volume and up substantially (30.5% YoY for October) in Europe. This could simply be due to the stock being sent to the respective regions (budget DSLRs vs higher-end DSLRs), but it’s an interesting discrepancy nonetheless.

The ratio between DSLR and mirrorless shipments to different region varies quite a bit as well. In Europe, DSLR and mirrorless shipments in terms of volume are roughly even, but in terms of value, mirrorless is nearly double. The United States, on the other hand, saw roughly 35K more DSLRs shipped to its shores compared to mirrorless cameras, but mirrorless still has double the value of those DSLRs.

It remains to be seen if volume and value return to their 2019 numbers over the holiday seasons, but things are looking up for an industry that’s seen a devastating decline.

CES is going all-digital for 2021 due to COVID-19 health concerns

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the organizer behind the annual Consumer Entertainment Show (CES), has announced its 2021 show is going all-digital, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CES usually takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States every January. But ‘with the growing global health concerns about the spread of COVID-19, it is not possible to safely convene tens of thousands of people,’ says CTA in its announcement post (embedded below). In place of the in-person event, which typically hosts over 180,000 attendees, CES 2021 will offer a ‘unique’ online experience.

Specifically, the CTA says there will be media events where ‘the world’s leading brands [will host] exclusive digital press events,’ product showcases where live demos and product showcases will show off new tech, as well as livestreamed keynotes and conferences for the latest announcements from technology companies from around the world.

While CES 2021 isn’t the first trade show affected by the COVID-19, it is one of the largest and longest-running, and is the first trade show, to our knowledge, of 2021 that’s been altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to photography accessories, camera makers have been known to show off prototypes and offer hands-on at CES events in the past. Time will tell what photo companies have a presence at the all-digital event in 2021.

World Press Photo Managing Director, Lars Boering, steps down suddenly as the foundation pivots due to COVID-19

The head of the World Press Photo Foundation has stepped down after five years in the role. Dutchman Lars Boering joined the foundation in 2015 but left without much explanation from either him or the WPP. In an official statement, Boering said ‘It was a tough decision to leave this beautiful organization, especially given the timing’ but doesn’t go on to give his reasons other than to say ‘it is time for me to pursue other opportunities’.

The organization only says ‘Today, the World Press Photo Foundation announces that Managing Director Lars Boering will be leaving the organization’ and goes on to say it is ‘appreciative of Lars’ leadership over the past five years. In this time, major talent programs and grants were developed, digital reach saw substantial growth, and a new format was established to announce contest nominees and winners, to further spotlight the stories that matter.’

Since the announcement, DPReview has spoken with Boering, independently, who said he left the foundation because so much of what he had planned for the future has changed since the coronavirus pandemic:

‘Some of the programs and some of the activities are on hold or will never come back in the same way. I believe we will not see many festivals or events return in the near future, and its doubtful whether many of our ideas will get funding to make them happen. COVID has changed everything and so I have brought my departure forward. My strength is in growth and re-imagining things. It is very clear to me and the Supervisory board that World Press Photo foundation will be better off with a Director that can steer it through, in a calm and steady way, the challenging landscape that Covid19 has unveiled.’

The organization says it is heading towards a ‘new phase’ that will help it to ‘future-proof the business model and ways of working’ as it explores ‘new digital avenues and establishing a new International Advisory Board’.

Boering adds a slightly clearer dimension to the part of the statement that mentions future-proofing the foundation, saying:

‘Over the next two years World Press Photo will be working carefully and steady to keep going, and we now know 2020 and 2021 will be okay for the foundation. I never intended to stay much longer than 7 or so years, and with the changing times now is the right moment to hand it over. WPP now reaches an audience of 300 million when we announce the winners and our reach on social media is growing ever faster. The challenge now is to monetize this value in the right way, in a way that is fits with the values of WPP and visual journalism. That has a great future and will be a wonderful challenge for my successor.’

Boerings departure leaves the foundation looking for a new head while an interim business director, Arnoud van Dommele, steps in for the time being. The organization will also establish an international advisory board by the end of this year, which will ‘provide strategic advice to the Supervisory Board and Executive Board of WPPF.’

Boering tells DPReview that he’s enjoyed his time at WPP and is proud of what he has achieved in his five and a half years:

‘I have steered the foundation toward becoming an organization devoted to progressive values and ethics, and one with a set of advocacy agendas. Programs like the African Photojournalism Database, the 6×6 talent program and various global workshops, are initiatives by WPP to provide more opportunities to photographers of different backgrounds. I’m taking some time off for a small sabbatical and will choose my new path carefully. Many offers and initiatives are already coming my way, and to continue my work in the creative industries will be a pleasure.’

‘The future of visual storytelling is very bright and more money is available than ever before,’ he promises.

As a result, the Supervisory Board will start the search for a new Executive Director. The collateral damage is huge, and the World Press Photo Foundation has also been impacted, which depends partially on a model that organizes physical exhibitions all over the world.

A new phase for World Press Photo begins. A phase that builds on a strong foundation, and also leads to opportunities to future-proof the business model and ways of working. This includes exploring new digital avenues and establishing a new International Advisory Board. Press freedom, freedom of expression and the support of visual journalism are more important than ever, and as a leading organization that plays a crucial role for visual storytellers, the World Press Photo Foundation, with the great support of its people and partners, will keep on innovating to deliver on that promise.”

Lars Boering will hand over his work to Arnoud van Dommele, who has served as interim business director since March, while the Supervisory Board starts the search for a new Executive Director.

The International Advisory Board will consist of approximately 12 global experts and will be established before the end of 2020. The International Advisory Board will provide strategic advice to the Supervisory Board and Executive Board of WPPF.

Interview: Celebrity photoshoots in the era of COVID-19 – Jesse Dittmar shares his experience

Jesse Dittmar was recently hired by The Washington Post to photograph 16-year-old TikTok star Charli D’Amelio in her parent’s backyard.

Jesse Dittmar has been photographing high-profile celebrities since late 2013. He’s used to photographing the big names on short notice with a limited time-frame for publications like The Washington Post and The New York Times, but when COVID-19 hit, his typically busy shooting schedule dried up quickly.

Ordinarily, celebrity photoshoots require travel and large teams working together in extremely close quarters. In the month’s since COVID-19 has swept through the world, we’ve seen magazine’s like Essence and GQ asking stars to photograph themselves for features in the publications. Luckily for photographers like Dittmar, the celebrity selfie doesn’t seem like it will become the new normal in the photo world.

Dittmar photographs big names on short notice for publications like the Washington Post and the New York Times

The Washington Post recently commissioned Dittmar to photograph Charli D’Amelio – a 16-year old from Norwalk, Connecticut with over 60 million TikTok followers. She is one of the rulers of the social media platform, which she uses to share short-form videos of herself dancing in her home, lip-syncing to her family’s dogs and more recently using her influencer status to urge teenagers to stay at home during the global pandemic.

We caught up with Dittmar to learn more about his photoshoot with D’Amelio, his experience shooting in the era of COVID-19 and what he thinks celebrity shoots will be like moving forward.


This was your first shoot since COVID-19 hit the states, how did the opportunity come about?

The first shoot of the COVID-era happened earlier than I was expecting, to be honest. I thought it would be well into the summer before I was going to get that first call, but I got an email out of the blue, like I normally do. The photo editor was very understanding in the email, everybody has different levels of risk tolerance in this new era – it depends on your personal health and your family situation – a whole variety of factors. The shoot made sense for me and I was itching to make some art, because I hadn’t in so long, so it was a no-brainer to say yes.

The editor really encouraged me not to bring an assistant, keep it small, and that’s what I did

The Washington Post was very explicit about how they wanted to keep it safe. Typically for a shoot like this I’m taking at least one assistant if not two, possibly a makeup artist and a stylist. The crew for a shoot like this could easily be 4-5 people. But sometimes a shoot can even be up to 10 people. It was clear that wasn’t going to happen. The editor really encouraged me not to bring an assistant, keep it small, and that’s what I did.

What was the experience like of working without an assistant, I imagine it’s been a number of years since you’ve worked in such a stripped down way?

It reminded me of when I was first starting out doing photo shoots, early on, when I was my own everything. It wasn’t completely foreign to me, but it was a big flashback. I have not worked in that way – especially with famous people – in a long time. Typically when I know I’m photographing someone who is accomplished and whose time is short, it’s important I bring all the people. We have to execute a level of professionalism and deliver a quality product in a very quick amount of time. The way to do that is to make sure you have the support you need.

What other precautions did you take to make sure that the shoot would be safe?

Part of the deal was we were going to photograph in Charli’s parent’s backyard. We were outdoors the entire time, staying socially-distant and keeping six feet away from each other. I met her parents before the shoot, they came out to the back deck and we had a little chat. It was very low key, there was no one around. The only people that I saw were her family and the dogs.

It ended up being very intimate, just us in the backyard, I haven’t done a shoot like that in so long. There were no distractions

She self-styled and we went through two outfit changes. With someone like Charli, she does her own makeup. I knew what her vibe was going to be like, I liked that vibe, and I wanted the photos to capture that. We also didn’t want to make her feel older than she is. She’s a teenager, she has a clear strong visual aesthetic and a sensibility that I wanted to embrace. It ended up being very intimate, just us in the backyard, I haven’t done a shoot like that in so long. There were no distractions.

How did your technical setup change without having an assistant with you?

Because I was the one doing all the heavy lifting I was cognizant of not bringing anything that I wouldn’t use. I’m not 23 years old anymore, so carrying hundreds of pounds of equipment isn’t as appealing as it once was. I made sure to pack light. Ironically, the first thing I rented was sandbags.

One of the best parts of working with an assistant is you’ve got a fully automated human brain running around with you and can make sure that stuff isn’t falling over. If you want to move a light fast and you are outdoors and you know you are only going to do that shot for 30-60 seconds, you just have an assistant make sure that light is not going to fall over.

I also rented a much longer lens than I would normally use. I’m usually shooting much closer, but for this I rented a 70-200. That and the sandbags were the big two rentals. I wanted to be as simple as possible because I didn’t have any help. I went into the shoot with the idea that I was going to use natural light if possible. I didn’t want to break out a bunch of lights and modifiers if I could help it (I still brought a light as a backup). The more stuff that you have out the more stuff that can fall over and the more stuff that can go wrong.

I also brought an 8 x 8ft frame, clamps, stands and bleached muslin cloth; this is a system that I use a lot when I’m photographing people against white, outdoors. The cloth interacts really well with the sun, it really absorbs the light, but also has the reflection. When I scouted out her backyard I found a spot where I knew by the time she came out, the sun was going to be coming through the trees and I could use the muslin as a projector. I thought that was a really nice effect.

When I’m shooting in a scenario like this, I’m typically trying to put my background in a shaded area which has a lot of blue sky. That provides a really nice broad luminous light source. It’s usually soft and bright, and that’s what this is, but with the added effect of the sun coming through the tree behind the backdrop.

Typically your time with celebrities is very limited, 15 or 20 minutes max, was that the case for this shoot as well?

Her publicist was treating this like it was a normal shoot, from a timing perspective. They only wanted me to photograph her for about 20 minutes, which is pretty typical. I didn’t push back while we were setting up the shoot and I was prepared for that, but I knew in the back of my head we’d likely get more time, which is what happened. All in all, I probably spent about an hour with her. I was on site for pretty much the whole afternoon to set up. I took my time with that.

Do you think your experience shooting with Charli is representative of what photoshoots will be like moving forward?

I’m expecting more photoshoots to come back later this summer and into the fall and I’m expecting shoots to be a lot more like this. Photoshoots of people are inherently risky because you are meeting people that are not in your COVID circle. I think that everyone is going to be very aware of being safe. But I think portrait sessions will happen. I don’t think all portraits will happen, but portraits like this, of personalities and newsworthy figures that are doing things that people want to read about, will. And the process in which they will be made will be very similar to my experience.

I see photoshoots up and down the spectrum of budget and production, all to be smaller

Photographers will be taking every precaution that they can and utilizing the smallest footprint and crew. I think they will be a lot more self-styling. Hair and makeup may become remote or the hair and makeup people will be super masked-up. I also think the timing of these shoots will continue to be quick. But in general I see everything happening at a more intimate, small scale, and I see photoshoots up and down the spectrum of budget and production, all to be smaller.

I think folks like myself who are used to working like this will have an easier time. I think photographers that are used to leaning on the production value heavily are going to have to make big changes in the way that their work looks and the way they physically operate, or they might be left behind.

Fujifilm donates Instax cameras, film to hospitals in Europe to help staff connect with patients amid COVID-19

Fujifilm UK has announced it’s donated Instax instant cameras to 31 National Health Service (NHS) hospitals across the United Kingdom and 19 other hospitals across seven other countries to help hospital staff ‘share a smile’ with patients while still wearing their personal protective equipment (PPE).

With doctors, nurses and other hospital staff having to wear an extraordinary amount of PPE due to the COVID-19 pandemic, patients within the hospital are unable to have the more face-to-face interaction they’re more familiar with in less-chaotic times.

‘Those working on the frontline in hospitals must put on gloves, gown, face mask, visor or air hoods before entering a hospital unit or caring for a patient – creating a full suit covering almost every feature,’ says Fujifilm in its press release announcing the initiative. It goes on to say:

‘This can make it difficult to reassure a patient, who cannot see a smile or a friendly face. PPE removes an important element of the personal connection that is usually so important between a clinician and patient. It can also heighten an already worrying and intimidating situation and make patients in ICU wards feel even more isolated.’

So, in its search to figure out how it can help NHS staff and patients alike throughout the COVId-19 pandemic, Fujifilm found a clever way to keep interactions a little more personal and friendly than otherwise possible while wrapped up in PPE. Through its donated Instax cameras, the staff is able to snap a photo of themselves and attach it to their gowns.

Fujifilm says roughly 120 Instax cameras and 7,500 Instax prints have been sent to hospitals in the U.K., Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Russia, France and Denmark, with more expected to be shipped out to interested parties.

In addition to helping patients feel more connected with their caretakers, Fujifilm says it also has the added benefit of making inter-team communication easier and boosting morale, as it can be difficult to see who’s underneath all the PPE, especially considering hospitals have staff moving more frequently between floors and departments.

Filmmaker uses COVID-19 work lull to make and sell $10 3D-printed camera battery cases

A documentary film maker from Utah has designed and built a series of battery holder magazines that he says help to solve the problem of knowing which batteries are fresh and which are depleted. The 3D printed magazines hold three or four batteries from common cameras and allow the batteries to be inserted contacts up for dead batteries and down for fresh ones.

Tim Irwin, who is printing the magazines in his basement, had been meaning to come up with a solution to this problem for a while, and had tried downloaded plans for 3D printed magazines in the past, but found they always broke. ‘I originally found files on Thingiverse that worked for a bit. But all the designs I tried from there ended up breaking because of a weak point in the print’ he explains. ‘When the travel restrictions around Covid 19 hit every one of my gigs was cancelled or postponed, so it seemed like prefect time to dive into this side mission. I designed my own from scratch and refined it over a long period of time until I was happy with the product. I’m always looking for ways to make my kit more efficient, quick, and organized. The Battery Mag was born out of that.’

Tim has designed the magazine so that when fresh batteries are loaded with their contacts down they are isolated from each other and from anything else the magazine might come into contact with, so the risk of shorting is avoided. And with deads loaded with the contacts facing up it is easy to see at a glance which battery to reach for next in fast moving situations.

Tim, who owns Functional Films, makes commercial video documentaries and says he is usually on the road shooting about 140 days a year. That has all stopped due to the coronavirus out-break, so this is how he is filling his time.

The Battery Mags are available for Panasonic DMW-BLF19, Canon LP-E6/N, Pentax DLI90, Sony NP-FZ100, Sony NP-FW50 batteries and he says a unit for Panasonic S cameras is also in production. The magazines are $ 9, $ 10 and $ 14 each, respectively, and can be ordered via the Battery Mag website.

Report: B&H furloughs 20% of its staff amidst COVID-19 pandemic

According to a report from the New York Post, B&H Photo furloughed ‘about 400’ of its 2,000 employees last Wednesday, more than a month after the iconic photo and electronics superstore was forced to shut its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The New York Post cites ‘sources close to the company’ and managed to obtain a memo sent out to employees by B&H human resources director Izzy Friedman. The New York Post writes:

In a memo to affected employees, human resources director Izzy Friedman said B&H “waited as long as possible” before making the cuts, and noted the company had been paying and providing benefits for affected workers “through the Passover holiday break, and beyond to make this easier.”

B&H was likewise waiting to “evaluate the various stimulus benefits available,” but was forced in the end to furlough workers because the “crisis has continued with no clear end in sight,” Friedman added.

The New York Post also spoke with a B&H employee, who said the company’s call center is ‘busy as hell [filling orders for] computers, movie cameras and accessories for setting up a home office’ amidst the global stay-at-home directives in place around the globe. As it stands, customers can still place orders online and pick up orders pick up products curbside, but the inside remains closed at this time.

Nikon, Olympus postpone upcoming financial results, citing COVID-19 challenges

Both Nikon and Olympus have announced the companies will be postponing the announcements of their most recent financial results, both of which were originally scheduled to be announced in mid-May.

In a press release on its website, Nikon explains the rationale for postponing the results of its fiscal year ending at the close of March 2020, which were set to be released on May 12, 2020. Nikon says the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent stay-at-home orders have made it difficult to follow the accounting procedures within the company, which includes auditing the numbers to ensure accurate reporting. As a result, Nikon has pushed back the financial results release date to May 28, 2020.

Olympus, too, has announced it will be postponing its financial results for its fiscal year ending at the close of March 2020. Like Nikon, Olympus says the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the timeliness of the results, saying ‘it is difficult to proceed with the scheduled accounting procedures implemented by the Company and its domestic and overseas affiliates as scheduled.’ Instead of an early May release, Olympus says it will release the latest results on May 29, 2020, just one day after Nikon.

We could theorize other reasons the companies may be pushing back the results, but the truth of the matter is auditing the financials of a multi-national operation is an intensive task; one made very difficult when non-essential employees are being ordered to work from home to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus. That said, it’s unlikely to be good news if Canon’s most recent financial report is anything to go by.
